In 2023, Myer Farm Distillers released two special edition whiskies: reserved, single-barrel versions of two existing products held for eight years of aging. Barreled in 2015, only three years into Myer Farm Distillers’ existence, the labels for these spirits needed to shine – literally.
Of the existing whiskey product line, one of the biggest issues identified in differentiating the standard John Myer Whiskey (left) line from their Single Barrel (right) counterparts was that both labels are nearly identical, with only a spacing adjustment to accommodate the addition of “New York Straight” and “Single Barrel” text lines. Otherwise, the colors and overall designs are hard to distinguish between at a quick glance:

Given that, while I still wanted to honor the existing color standards for each of the four whiskies, the Reserves needed to stand out. I inverted the colors from the off-white tan grain and text and replaced the coloration of the ‘John Myer’ bar with the associated whiskey branding colors, shifting the background from a plain field of color to a scan of antiqued paper of a similar color to the original swatch.
Thereby, the new labels retained the original color identities, but would then be easier to distinguish than their predecessors. I also made upgrades to the border—previously a simple double outline, and added small, subtle art deco elements to the corners and centers, up-playing the special, luxury element of the reserve spirit without adding gaudiness.
Since these spirits were meant to reflect the growth and progress of the distillery, I also pitched the idea to have gold foil stamp printing utilized to, as stated, let the labels truly shine. After narrowing down the design, it was decided that the border and grain logo would be printed in gold foil. I worked with the label printer, TLF Graphics (Rochester, NY) to ensure quality specifics, including adjustments to the grain logotype to display the foil print without sacrificing the visual impact of the fine-lined beards.

Finally, although the Reserve Four Grain and Reserve Wheat Whiskey were the first two to be released, there were plans in the works for eventual releases comparable to the remaining whiskey line: a Reserve Bourbon Whiskey, and a Reserve Rye Whiskey. With the final design settled, I drafted a line-up of four total labels with the color selections for the remaining whiskies to ensure the colorations worked for all of the intended spirits.

I can't do any hand sewing currently, due to my neuropathy in my fingers (it is bad right now). So, my EPP quilt is on hold for a bit, unfortunately. 🙁

So, in the meantime I am doing a rewatch of "Supernatural." I started season one and am currently watching episode eight, "Bugs." I thought my insect mug was too appropriate not to use while watching this episode. There may or may not be whiskey in that mug.

Spoiler alert: there is whiskey in my bug mug. 🥃

Working on my final blends for some colognes for a pal, and then I'm going to blend myself something for Halloween. Want to use some of my scents I don't use often. Maybe star anise or chinese magnolia

I've wanted a whiskey flight made out of a barrel stave for a while, and there's a billion of them out there, but I really kinda wanted to make it myself, make it *mine*.
I got so mad trying to drill holes through this fucking stave that I took a crowbar to it in the driveway. Then I nailed down parts I tore off. I beat the absolute SHIT out of it. Then partly out of spite I put 8+ coats of tung oil on it just to see how polished I could get it. I.. definitely made it mine, I guess.

I’m not a big whiskey drinker, and not a fan of Screwball, but this Xplorer peanut butter whiskey, introduced to me by the fine folks at Bona Fide Beer Co. in Pittsburgh, is excellent! Who knew Pennsylvania had such a booming local distilling scene?!
