So if you think that earthworms are bugs but spiders aren't, you'd click "An above definition + land worms" and then say "insects only" in the tags.

The Web - God of Fate (she/it): im pretty happy with her design atm, shes meant to be a half spider half woman thing and i love that for her. shes probably the one ive thought the most on so far given her importance to the story. i want her to wear silks and shiny silver jewelry that just sparkles like wet spiderwebs do, not sure if im gonna keep the veil?

The Dark - God of the Dark (she/he/it): probably my weakest concept at the moment. it doesnt do the dark any justice. i mean i like the cloak idea but i want them to be very tendrilly, all consuming, shadowy, but i dont know how to properly portray them :/

The Desolation - God of Destruction and Fire (they/it): i have a neat vision for them! i want them to be made of coal and ash and smoke, to be burning and glowing on the inside, and their body is decorated with melted wax to look like clothes. not quiiiiiite sure about how their melty candle dress is now? i want it to be less constrictive

The Stranger - God of the Unknown and the Whimsical (he/she/they/it): it's meant to be this. weird wirey creature hidden behind masks and a lot of fabrics, like the framework of a poseable plush doll? i like the way the masks look but im not so sure about the body.

The Vast - God of the Above (she/he/they/it): im not so sure about his design at all im gonna be real. i want them to look like the atmosphere and be covered in clouds and have mountains for feet and an ocean cape but i feel like it might be a bit?? idk??? im just not that happy with it :/

The End - God of Death and Time (they/it): ugh i love this concept sm, making death read as less scary and more divine is so fun. theyre based on a seraphim and a sand timer,

The Buried - God of the Underneath (she/he/they/it): ANOTHER OF MY FAVORITES!!!! i love them. theyre inspired by hermit crabs!! and they have silver chains holding their shell to them. they look so endearing with their lil lopsided eyes ;; <3

The Flesh - God of the Body and Meat (she/he/they/it): i have so many ideas for the flesh y'all- im very excited to do a concept sheet for them. theyre meant to have no skin, just exposed bone and muscle, large limbs, hooves, exposed heart underneath a ribcage, teeth that close around their abdomen. white bandages that wrap around like clothes. a teeth/horn crown? i dont quite know whether to go for a more animalistic look or a more human one? like- theres so many ways to go with him idek!!!

The Hunt - God of Predators and Pride (they/it): see, i like this design but i feel like its too werewolf like? yknow? thats cool!! but itreads more monster to me than God :/

The Corruption - God of Nature, Rot, and Disease (she/they/it): i love this weird bug thing. this one i was really inspired for (mostly because. corruption aligned. so obviously im gonna think about this one alot) theyre this weird bug thing, the veil is inspired by the one from the art on the wiki! i want to maybe make them a bit more gross and weird because nature is like that sometimes, a moot on tiktok suggested that i add animal bones!! and i think thats SO smart im absolutely going too

The Spiral - God of the Incomprehensible (it/its): this weirdo is so hard to pin down istg. i imagine them as this spiral thing. body is kindof liquidy, arms are spindly and long, multiple shifting faces, overall just constantly changing and moving and like!!! how am i meant to draw that??? when my brain cant even wrap my head around what its supposed to look like yknow??? bruh jrdbhgfjdldgfh- that being said i think the main problem with the design is that it just gives me too many Michael vibes!!! is it the hair? the arms? its probably both.

The Lonely - God of Solitude and the Self (they/it): i like what this one has going so far! theyve got fog hair, fog tears, their body is meant to be splotchy like turquoise marble, i vibe with it so hard. not so sure what to do with their outfit tho :/

The Slaughter - God of War (he/they/it): another one of my more stronger designs i think! centaur with weapons sticking into them, face concealed, medieval armor and antlers- it vibes

the extinction isnt drawn because i literally have no idea what they should look like aside from color palette-

Kai is like way shorter then everyone else which is funny because he’s the most violent and the leader. He’s like an angry wet cat.

An absolutely stacked martial artist who spent lots of his time training not just for revenge but for the love of it. He is a spicy guy who has fun while being a downright dangerous man. He can get along with anyone but would rather give them heart attacks with a mere glance. He rollerblades and plays bass guitar. He's strong and agile with a domineering presence and is down right bloodthirsty (He craves confrontation and validation, nothing makes him smile like beating people to bloody pulps LMAO) He's also an asshole, don't get it twisted he's a massive dick head. Literally look at him he is a JERK.

Dragon Relationships:

Carson: His second in command who he generally trusts and his sparring partner

Brody: Someone he knows is the actual second best but also knows that competition keeps him sturdy and likes him much more than Carson. That’s his literal bestie

(He's obsessed with Kai fr tho, kinda a D rider tbh) He can act crazy and have fun but seriousness is typically required to maintain respect especially in front of the WW so that they feel inferior.

Dragon Relationships:

Kai: Literally Carson is obsessed with the man as he wants to be that revered and respected for his raw power and skill.

Carson: Someone Brody will do anything to one up and desperately wants his spot as second.

Who is a night owl:

-Athrys used to be an artisan and Eramis is obsessive, so I'd say that both of them were night owls. I like to think that they would work late into the night side-by-side on their projects as a means of enjoying each other's company, especially after they became mothers and their lives became super busy. And, because I like to headcanon that they often adopted more 'problem' children (as in, kids from the village that were special needs or too difficult/rowdy for their bioparents to keep tabs on- which is less of a cruel sentance when you remember that Eliksni rear their young communally) that were mixed indiscriminantly into their own clutches, this often ended up working out well for them bc lots of the fussy sleepers would always have at least one of their mothers already awake to tend to them. Either Athrys in her studio weaving baskets and sculpting architextural miniatures or Eramis poring over star charts, or them doing it side by side, it didn't matter- they'd always be there

Who is a morning person:

-Honestly, following that previous point I don't think either of them were morning people. Eramis likely is now bc of a combo of Drift-induced internal clock fuckery and PTSD-induced insomnia, but that's hardly by choice. And, if you got her back on a Riisian cycle, then she'd probably start reverting back to old habits

Are they cuddlers:

-Absoloutly. These crabs are SOOO snuggly. Whether they stay that way is the question: I feel like they'd be the type to start off snuggled up like cats and wake up with Athrys on her back with her limbs sprawled, and Eramis grabbing onto one of her limbs for dear life. They'll settle more if there's eggs or hatchlings between them bc the scent of either subconciously forces them to not move as much, but without that added stimulus, the nest is free real estate

Who is the big spoon and who is the little spoon:

-Common logic would dictate that Athrys would be the big spoon, given the fact that I hc her to be a big round gal, but it's actually Eramis, because she has the 'grabs and clings with all 6 limbs like she's dying' disease while sleeping, so she tends to end up the big spoon even if she starts off as the little spoon.

What is their favourite sleeping position:

-Starting off? Facing each other with Eramis curled up under Athrys's chin and Athrys curled around her as well, with their youngest hatchlings squished between them. If they're still in that position when they wake up or not is, again, entirely based on if their babies are there to activate the parental guarding instinct, but their favorite position to fall asleep together would be the facing each other grab-and-hold

Who steals all the blankets:

-Ironically given where she put her House, Eramis used to be the one who'd always complain about being too cold, so the blankets usually ended up wadded around her. This worked bc Athrys often ran on the warmer side, so she'd usually just toss them over Eramis after a mid-night wake-up anyways. Though I hc that Eramis usually ends up sleeping curled up into as tight of a circle as an Eliksni can get, so that paired with her smaller size means that 'hoarding' is kind of a misnomer

What they wear to bed:

-Honestly w/out seeing traditional Riisian garb, it's hard to say exactly how bedclothes would work, but since Riis appeared to have been a water world/much more wet or tropical climate than Earth with all the mentions of canal traversal in the Garden Way lorebook, I'd say loose robes in winter and nothing in summer. That would just mean more layers to trap humid, sticky heat, which is unbearable.

Who likes seeing the other wearing their t-shirt:

-T-shirts aren't applicable here bc these are alien bugs but I'm positive that 'dress tiny partner in your clothing' is a universal constant, so Athrys always got a kick out of seeing Eramis draped in her robes bc its cute. Eramis herself was fond of this in wintertime especially bc more fabric = warmer and also it smelled like wife

Who falls asleep mid-conversation:

-Athrys. Eramis takes her monologues VERY SERIOUSLY. If she's talking to you she WILL NOT STOP UNTIL HER POINT IS MADE. Athrys, on the other hand, was always perfectly content to just drift off to the sound of Eramis rambling about one thing or the other, which used to irritate Eramis tremendously when they were kids (I like to hc them as childhood friends to lovers)

Who wakes up in the middle of the night with nightmares:

-Both of them used to be pretty solid sleepers on Riis, but now? It's Eramis. I'm sure that if Athrys is still alive she gets them too, but Eramis's PTSD is...something else entirely :')

Who accidentally punched the other in their sleep:

-Athrys has done this more than once on accident while moving to her preferred sleeping position of Sprawled On Back. Eramis just clings like a burr. Though I DO love Shadow's hc of Eramis being an extremely rowdy, terrible sleeper lmfao

Who can’t keep their hands to themself:

-ERAMIS. Doesn't matter where you're placed in the nest- if you're warm, she will find you and fucking Get You. Though if we're talking turning sleepy petting into a lil something else...then Athrys is the one for that, lmao. Usually when Eramis was ranting before bed about something or the other and she got too sleepy-distracted by how nice her wife's voice was to just ask her to go to sleep and decided to get her to make other sounds instead

For Misraaks, I'm going to do one with Aeris and one with Taniks, bc I don't really ship him with anyone but him having crazy hookups is deeply funny to me

(M + A)Who is the big spoon and who is the little spoon:

-Aeris is the little spoon. He's a long lanky killing machine, but he loves being held, and Misraaks is capable of squeezing him nice and tight so he gets that sweet, sweet pressure therapy as well. He honestly likes it almost as much as he likes the sex, bc it knocks him the FUCK out and helps him sleep better than he normally would alone

(M + T): Who accidentally punched the other in their sleep:

-TANIKS. Taniks has a reduced need for sleep thanks to all the bullshit he's gone through, but he still needs to sleep, so he has this whole elaborate setup going on where he shifts his sensors on high alert and has his limbs go through an autofidget program to make it seem like he's lost in thought when he's really just knocked out. The one time that Misraaks slept with him, he didn't realize that Taniks was actually sleeping instead of just being zoned out, and got punched for his efforts. Thankfully not hard enough to cause permanant damage, but still not something that Misraaks wants to repeat anytime soon

saw a post about tboys swamp posting for clout and stealing valor of the real swamp aficionados (silly post not an actual issue, op was drunk) and was discussing with my partner about if tillman would be a swamp posting clout chaser and the conclusion is yes. he would be doing it to follow trends and look outdoorsy and also he doesn't want people to think he's grossed out by or scared of swamps because he thinks it isnt manly. it ends up with jaylen taking him to a swamp because she wants to look for bugs and fish. she thought he would like it and he didn't want to say no to her. and hes trying to be so brave for her but he is not. being brave. he is being whiny. still at no point does he make any effort to leave he just keeps following jaylen instead

Afghhgghh I'm making myself sad with all the critters I want to take care of - craigslist posts of mice, hamsters, gerbils, and leopard geckos, not to mention our neighbor being ready to give their cohoused leopard geckos to me on a moment's notice. 😭 I reeeeeally wish I could say yes to her.

And we don't have room or money (or time/energy) for anything else right now, so that means... time to throw all of this into doing stuff for the animals I have.

I finally bought a heating set up for Spoon last night. It's still a bit early for torpor, so hoping to set that up and start bugging him a bit more to keep him eating through this month at least. He was pretty fat from bugs & wet food a month or two ago, but we fell off from offering those regularly & so he's back to being picky about kibble. Need to get that sorted!

I want to switch Ed to loose substrate, but I might wait until next year to do it, as we're trying to get the bioactive substrate for the pokeys to settle. The hedgehog viv is still getting TONS of gnats. 💀 Plus side though, the two live plants in Spoon's viv are still doing okay! Anyway, I may at least make a dig box for Ed for now so he can check it out.

I have some changes planned for Charis's viv as well, and I just got a can of drylok so I can try to finish up the hide complex I built for her like....3 years ago. If that works out well, I want to build some climbing stuff for Ed as well. And I need to start working on new topper panels for the crab tank!

A Tentacool Story

So, who else is ready for this arc to be over? Well good for you, there's only one more after chapter 8.

Also, should I post on Fanfiction.net? I got around to signing up for an account, but I'm not sure if it's the best site to post on. Haven't used it since I was a widdle bug catcher using his grampy's computer.

Chapter 8: Just keep Cool

'I am absolutely fucked. I've never fought anything bigger than a trout, let alone an actual pokemon! My health is… well, I don't know how to translate injuries into game terms. My face stings a lot and I'm tired from digging so much.'

'But not fighting isn't an option anymore. This jerk was never gonna let me escape without a fight. It's looking at me like a juicy snack. Jellyfish aren't very nutrient rich, genius! We're the plastic bags of the ocean!'

-"Krabby." snip snip

'And why am I the only pokemon talking?!? Is this guy just dumb? Do dumb pokemon not know how to talk? Am I dumb for not knowing how to talk pokemon? Ah whatever, no time to think about it. Fight's on!'

The Krabby sticks out it's claws with a mighty Vicegrip, but Tentacool manages to skid to a stop just in time.

"Have a taste of this move, I've been practicing!" Stingers dug into the soft ground, Tentacool whips up a bunch of mud, flinging it directly at the opponent. The Mud slap lands dead on, blinding the target!

Flailing about, it snips left and right, dead on! Of course, even blind, it's not hard to hit an opponent that can't move easily. But at least it was only a glancing blow.

Retaliating, Tentacool thrusts a stinger at the thrashing crab. CRITICAL Poison sting lands, sending a venomous shock through it's system!

"How about that? Ready to give up yet?"

-"Krab-Krabby!"

"What did you say about my mother?!?" 'Oh hey, I guess it's not all that hard to understand these guys after all. Just gotta go with it.'

Waving to it's companions, the other fish pokemon start sliding towards the water. It doesn't take the ornery crab to catch on to their ploy. Washing out it's eyes with bubbles, it spies the others making a break for it and scuttles after the bunch!

"Hey! Coward! Where do you think you're going?" 'Damnit, come on you jelly arms, move! Move! MOVE!' slide

'Okay, now move FASTER!' Unable to keep up, Tentacool scoots along, one wet slide at a time. The Magikarp at the bank shout and splash like hell, but Krabby pays them no mind.

It's grabbed one of the escapees at the front of the pack, stopping all the others in their tracks.

'Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on.' "Come. OOOOOOOOOON!"

-"Krabby?" The Magikarp splashes one last time, somehow managing to wriggle out of the confused crab's claws. That piercing scream, Supersonic, managed to stun it!

For the second time today, it's prey escaped.

-"Kra-Kra-Kra-Kra-Kra!" It stomped it's feet, snipped it's claws, gnashed it's mandibles, and threw the mother of all tantrums! The pokemon turned it's full attention on the now exhausted Tentacool, rushing him down and delivering a killer Vicegrip. CRITICAL

Grabbing him by the tentacles, Krabby viciously unleashed a torrent of Bubble at point blank range!

The other pokemon looked on in horror, with the rain dying down, there was no chance for escape this time. He was simply too far for anyone to reach. The party had no other option than to continue to the river before the slick grass dried out…

"ABOUT DAMN TIME!" -"Krab!" A Supersonic screech rang through the crab's carapace, forcing it to let go for the third time today!

Constrict! Both of Krabby's claws were suddenly pinched closed.

"Took long enough for the rain to let up. A powered up bubble attack is no joke you know? But hey, I'm resistant!"

-"K-Krab?"

"Wondering about your claws? Yeah, they're pretty strong, but they're built for closing with a lot of force, not opening. But my tentacles, they don't need to be strong. They just have to make contact!"

-"Kra-" Poison sting continued to deal damage, easily outpacing Bubble's now reduced firepower. With both sides faltering, a surprise attack is launched from behind!

"Guys!" A line of Magikarp… and two Goldeen, trail from the direction of the stream. Each one seems to have pushed the one ahead just a bit closer to the action. The final attack came from one brave little fish's splash attack which seems to have launched it's companion for one final Tackle attack.

Under the weight of both poison and blunt force trauma, Krabby faints!

take 4 of this fucking post jfkds;jakfld;sa. NOTE 1: planets are big and trade is everywhere. this really just represents the most traditional food in the specific regions where the winx grew up. NOTE 2: for brevity's sake i will encourage you, the reader, to assume that when i say, like, 'bananas,' what i MEAN is 'native fruits that are contextually similar to earth bananas.' cool? cool. let's go

SOLARIA: Snakes, scorpions, lizards, oh my! The hot, dry climate means plant matter is at a premium. Small reptiles and large insects make up the caloric bulk, along with a fair amount of milk. Cacti and palms provide the only substantial fruit, which, when fermented with honey, creates Solaria's most famous beverage. Flatbread is another staple, especially when combined with UNBELIEVABLY HOT PEPPERS. Most Solarian food is either sickeningly sweet or painfully spicy by non-Solarian standards.

ANDROS: Fish, obviously. Regular fish, shellfish, lots of shrimp, octopus, some saltwater snails. Lots of grilled/kebab'd* food, and acid marinating like ceviche. Fruits are mostly small and hardy, like figs, dates, olives, and thick-skinned grapes, and herbs/leafy spices are the main source of flavor enhancement. The warmest parts of Andros produce sugarcane, but the overall climate is too mild for much capsaicin and too wet for solid salt deposits, so the flavor profiles are mainly sweet and savory with a bit of acid.

LINPHEA: Large, soft-bodied fruits first and bugs second, baby. Papaya, mangoes, bananas, aaaall that good stuff, mostly eaten raw, and also a few leaves and edible flowers. Huge beetles and wild chickens are plentiful in Linphea's jungles, and large freshwater eels are rarer but highly prized. There's a wealth of rich spices like cinnamon, cacao, and vanilla, and peppers, so Linphean food is full of strong flavors and heat, but only mild sweetness.

ZENITH: MEAT. Zenith is so cold that the only significant vegetation on most of the planet is algae, which is eaten both as a paste and smoke dried as a papery film. Other than that it's a very whale-meat-heavy diet, with roe and crab for some variety. Their extremely advanced technology means Zenith has state-of-the-art hydroponics across the whole planet though, and there's obviously interplanetary trade, so they make heavy use of those to branch out. Zenethi bitches love bread and sour candy.

MELODY: The famous floating islands necessitate heavy reliance on fowl. Melody has several domesticated bird species, and more than a hundred ways to prepare eggs. The very dry earth means most of the plants are tough and unappetizing, but roots like potatoes, carrots, ginseng, etc are staples, and fungi are both plentiful and popular. Between the salmonella and the Textures, very, very little is eaten raw, almost everything being either cooked or fermented. Melodic cuisine has a very earthy/umami flavor profile in general.

DOMINO: You'd think this would be the spicy planet, but no! Lots of grains, gourds, melons, and berries, and yes, of course they had an equivalent to pumpkin pie. Roses and their cousins (plums, peaches, apples) were favorites, with whole, candied roses being an upperclass delicacy. Meat is considered optional except for special events, largely as a product of the ceremonial significance of hunting, and just like all the best declining empires, Domic nobility were EXTREMELY adventurous with food. They made some crazy cheeses.

MAGIX: Known for its pastry! Magix' fully synthetic geography and climate make it the ideal home for several delicate grains and fruits like pawpaws, so if you want baked goods or unique pastas, there is simply no better planet. They have a booming 'designer fruit' industry (rivaled only by Zenith's) and are constantly debuting new hybrids. On an artificial planet with no native animals, meat requires animal agriculture, and starting a population of animals is just harder than bringing a bag of seeds, so Magix really doesn't prioritize meat. However, as a massive trade hub, basically everything you can think of is readily available.

"HA! You'll hear no arguments from me, sweet cheeks. And vermin should snuffed out, wouldn't you agree? I suppose I'll have to do a bit of exterminating when I take back the palace if that loud mouth Sebastian doesn't have the good sense to high tail it out of the sea for good."

“Whom do you seek?” The ageless giant’s voice rattled my bones as he towered over me from his seat upon a stone throne.

“Death!” I shouted, hoping he could hear me.

“Why?”

It was hard to stand from the force in his voice.

“He took what was mine!”

In a motion that seemed slow and deliberate he reached down and scooped me up, letting me go upon his shoulder where I gripped his robe tightly.

He stood, keeping a hand protectively around me so I would not fall. He was impossibly tall and each casual stride would have taken me a minute to run.

“All belongs to Life until it is given to Death.” No longer directed at me it was easier to withstand his voice and volume.

“Not this.”

“What was taken?”

I have to force the words out, “my dog.” Hot and wet tears begin to streak my face. “He saved me. Now I’m going to save him.”

“Boy, all things die.”

“Then I will kill Death. If all things die then so must he. And I’ll take back my dog.”

The giant hmmed.

We walked on like that. Down cavernous halls so tall I couldn’t tell if I was looking at stars or something else. The walls obscured by a fog that grew thicker as we went, swirling by his feet and rising until it seemed we were nearly swimming. Were it not for his muffled steps I might have thought we were.

I heard a mournful echo above us and watched as a whisp of a massive creature turn overhead. It’s eye seemed to focus on me before calling out again, flicking it’s powerful tail, and disappearing from sight. It looked like a whale swimming through the sky. As I tried to focus on it the fog lapped at my shoes and we moved further down into it. A crab snapped it’s claws at me and I jerked back nearly tumbling off my perch.

We were swallowed whole by the fog.

Only in its absence did I realize I no longer heard a deep churning.

The fog parted like a curtain and we stood in the barren presence of an angelic girl.

“Are you Death?” I called down.

She shook her head and bells tinkled in the silence.

“She is life.” The giant plucked me and set down in front of the girl.

“I wanted to see Death.”

“You have seen Death. In the bugs you crushed, your grandfather before he passed, the dog who’s gave his life to save yours. You rode upon his shoulder to come here.” She smiled sweetly and played with her hair, making the bells tinkle in time to her words. “Lovely. I like this form you have chosen for me.”

I nearly jump as the ageless giant man is now just a robed skeleton boy. “How…?” I trailed off.

“We are as you feel we must be. Defeating Death must have seen such a task, he could not help but be who you thought him to be. You think me innocent of in Benji’s death, I cannot help but appear as such.”

“Did you cause his death?”

“We do not cause life or death. I rule over all that lives and I do what I can to protect it but, eventually all things must leave my domain. One day, even I will cross over.”

She rose from the ground, older now. Looking less like an angel and more like my mother. She reached out a hand and Death, taller and more human, took it.

“You have come far, boy.” Death speaks with the voice of my father. Had he always?

“We cannot give you back Benji. He resides in the land of my other half and cannot return.”

“I will watch over him. Until such time as you cross over-“

“I want to cross now!”

They looked sadly at each other, looking more and more with the faces of my parents.

“We do not know the future. I cannot say it is not your time as we do not control when someone is to cross the lands. But it is not a choice to make lightly.” Death was solemn. He raised two fingers to his mouth and whistled.

From beyond the fog came a barking.

Whole and wagging bounded Benji into the light. He cocked his head and ran to me. He licked at my face and I buried my hands into his soft fur. His fur became wet with my tears as I sobbed into his neck.

“Benji willingly gave his life for yours. He knew he likely would not survive a fight with a bear but choose to defend you anyways. He wanted you to live.”

He looked at me with those big eyes and a sad smile, then ran back towards the land of the dead. I got up to follow but he turned, barked at me as though he was issuing a command I had taught him only a few years ago, stay.

He was gone.

They were gone.

I was gone.

My alarm buzzed and I pulled myself out of bed. I was still dressed in my clothing from the cave. The same ones I was wearing when I set out weeks ago. My phone said differently. Only the night had passed, although it contained the missed calls and texts from the next several weeks ahead.

My only evidence that the journey had happened at all.

We ate breakfast quietly, my parents and I. Someone always touching me, as if in disbelief that I was unharmed after what happened.

Later, we mourned Benji.
