i think what i love so much about the kouya and haruka dynamic we're seeing develop in overtake is it's something i've never seen much of before? like i don't hate the "orphan finds new parental figure" trope but it's not always my favorite thing, especially if it's done poorly and comes off as overwriting the significance of the past
so i'm really vibing with the fact that kouya doesn't really come off as a father figure or even older brother or quirky uncle to haruka, and i couldn't articulate why before but i think it's because like
what they have is just an intergenerational friendship, plain and simple, and that feels so rare to me
in sports anime specifically of course there's often the coach figure, which is similar but still different imo because even if the athletes are friends with their coach, the coach is never just a friend. they're always a coach too
but kouya isn't! like he's not taking a role as a coach or trainer or even sponsor (well he tried before discovering oh wow it takes money to sponsor an f4 team lmao) and he's not a teammate or mentor or former driver for haruka to look up to
he's literally just some guy who became haruka's friend (at this point, at least) and they just happened to meet at a time where they could change each other's life for the better
anyway tl;dr intergenerational friendships in media. would love to see more of it
