I wouldn’t have left the house past 39 weeks if I didn’t need to, but my Grandfathers funeral wasn’t one I was willing to compromise on. We have the hospital bag in the car, but have agreed to get in the funeral car with my family to ride over to the parlour. Which I’m already uneasy about.
It’s a rough day already, but Mom is fussing over the flowers and my Grandma is worrying that family members from overseas won’t make it, my aunt, as usual is just sat there and there’s so many things to get ready.
“I’ve got that” I sigh as I go and help my Grandma with all of her things to take “it’ll be okay, you know, I know it’s not what you want to hear but he was 98 and is resting happily now” I say as I take her into my arms, rubbing her back “I’ve got you” I whisper. “You shouldn’t even be here, you’ve got enough happening.. I don’t want to rely on you to do anything” she tears up. “I want to do whatever I can” I assure her before heading off with her bag.
“Ready?” I sigh as we head out to the car. Luckily, my wife and I have a whole area on the back row and I look at her with a sigh “I don’t know why I agreed to the obituary” I say as I rub my bump in small circles. “You’ll be amazing, you always are” she smiles.
The journey is short and sweet but as we get to the roundabout, there’s a fuss from up front. “Wo-woahhh!” The driver shouts before we all get jolted back, jerking our bodies forward as the seatbelts pull us back. My heart jumps into my throat as I feel my body being tugged and thrown. “Baby!” My wife shouts as she turns to me, checking straight away on my facial expression. “I-I’m fine, I’m fine, are you?” I ask and she nods “I’m okay.. baby okay?” She asks and I rub softly feeling a little kick and I nod “baby’s fine”.
“Everyone okay?” The driver asks and everyone is fine, but when he gets out, he sees that all of the bonnet is crushed. “Okay, I need to order a taxi for all of you, on us obviously” he sighs heading off to call them and I look at my phone checking the time “we have twenty minutes”. “It’s a ten minute walk, can we just get there? Madge?” My wife asks my Nan and she nods but I feel the heaviness in my body grow. “Baby, I don’t know” I say quietly and she nods “okay, let’s see the taxi times”.
“They won’t be here for another twenty” he explains. I just get out of the car and start walking, knowing we have no choice. “Lena!” my wife, Blair calls and I look back “come on” I sigh.
The walk is quick but painful and I feel movements in places I haven’t felt them before. We get there with a few minutes spare and I find the nearest bench, sitting straight away and putting my hair up. “I like your hair down” Gran sighs and I shake my head “too hot” I mutter. “Baby, do you need water? Anything?” Blair asks and I just shake my head. “Back rubs” I say softly letting her give me some love.
“Family?” The director addresses and I look to Blair “I need a minute, you go in..” I sigh and know I have to go in. “Come on I’ve got you” she says holding her hand out. I stand up and as I do I feel my inner thighs warm up under my dress. “My waters” I mutter, grabbing the bench “My waters just broke” I whisper and they are met with so much pain in my back, I find myself bent over the bench taking long deep breaths.
“Not now baby, not now” I whisper. “Lena! Blair! Come on” Gran demands and I look to Blair pleading for help. “Right, let’s get you in there, I know you’d kill me if I let you leave” she sighs as she supports my back, guiding me in.
We are the champions by queen plays on the speakers as I walk towards the front row, passing people who notice the flushed colour of my skin and sweat droplets on my forehead. “Let me help” Blair whispers as we get to the seats and it’s a good thing she helps because I couldn’t have got down on my own.
The service is nice and luckily, the contractions are slow and I’m able to breathe quietly through them, but one hits so hard that all I feel I can do is open my legs a little and cry so I can let some frustration out, normal in a funeral I guess. “And Lena has some words to say..” the director announces. Shit.
I fumble up to the top, standing in front of the room filled with hundreds of friends, family and acquaintances of my Grandfather. Clearing my throat as I open the paper I start to talk. “My Grandfather would be over the moon with the turn out, he always said that-“ I start well but the pain comes over me like a wave. “He said that-“ I start and find my hands gripping the stand. “He-“ I mutter before I just buckle, my knees give out and I find myself being caught by the director as he lowers me to the ground.
“I’m here, sweetheart, I’m here” my wife announces as she gets to the front. The pain is making me pant uncontrollably and I’m not keeping it a secret anymore. “Do the speech” I mutter to her and she shakes her head “do it, please” I cry as I lean against a wall, panting and shaking.
She stands and delivers, better than I probably would have. Everyone is distracted anyway, by me, legs parted, sweating and panting, slightly covered by the coffin. The final music starts and I look up, seeing people leave, trying to catch a glance of what I’m doing. “I’m here, I’m here” she states as she comes to my attention. “I’ve called an ambulance” a member of staff announces and I just shake my head “there’s no time”.
“It’s okay, I’ve had 3, she’s had 2” the staff member says as she comes over. “Towels, water and scissors” she demands of the director and I look to my wife, tears in my eyes “thank you for doing that” I smile and she laughs, rubbing my belly and taking my underwear off. “Come on, let’s have a baby” she smiles.
“Shit, you’re.. like, open” she whispers as she gazes between my legs. “I know” I say as I grab my thigh, panting in and out. “Can I push?” I ask softly and she looks to the women “yes, you absolutely can” one of them laughs. “O-okay” I mumble as I scrunch my face up, taking a breath and baring down for the first time ever. “Nnnnggg” I groan quietly, feeling movement but no spreading.
“Okay, like you’re doing a poo” the woman smiles and I look to Blair grabbing her hand and squeezing “nngaahahh!” I cry out, taking some quick rounded breaths after letting it out. “Pick her leg up” one of the women demand to my wife and I shake my head “I need her” I moan and the other woman takes a leg, pushing back.
“Mmmphhh” I cry out “I can’t fucking do it” I cry and my wife smiles “You! Are Lena fucking Lovell, you can do anything” she laughs.
“Gaaaaah!” I cry, feeling myself split. “Am I tearing?” I ask and the woman between my legs shakes her head “I’m Mel” she laughs and I nod “thank you Mel” I smile before baring down again “ccccaaaaah!” I screech “that’s it, harder sweetheart, you’re doing it” she smiles and I shake my head before pulling my other leg back and giving everything I’ve got “GAAAHHH!” I cry out feeling a pop “fuck” I moan, trying to catch my breath.
“Heads here” she smiles “again” she demands and I shake my head “I need a break”. “You’re doing amazingly baby, you’re so beautiful” Blair smiles lovingly and I laugh, wiping my head. “I love you” I whisper and she smiles “I love you too”.
I find myself getting up onto my knees, leaning forward “sorry” I mumble and the woman smiles “you’re in control” she says softly.
“Fuck.. fu-UUHHH” I cry out, feeling the shoulders stretch me out “ohhhh, oh god” I moan, reading down “come on baby, come out” I whisper as I tug a little. “Come on, work with mommy” I whisper. “Baby, you catch” I instruct Blair as I hold on to the stand. “Ready?” I whisper before letting out a huge scream “aahhhhhhh!” I howl as I feel the baby leave my body and splash into my loves arms, followed by the sweetest cries.
“Oh my god..” she whispers “you did it” I hear her sob before the two women help me on to my back a little propped up. “It’s a boy” Blair grins, handing him to me “a boy” I grin, taking him into my arms “oh your great grandfather would love you” I smile. “Trevor?” My wife smiles, my grandfathers name. “Trevor?” I whisper to baby as I kiss Blair softly.

*In both Anne of Ingleside and Rainbow Valley Shirley is two years older than Rilla. But in Rilla of Ingleside, he turns eighteen few months before Rilla... it is pure chaos. Rilla was supposed to be nearly fourteen, according to the RV, in 1914, but she is nearly fifteen in RoI. So I apologize, but I had a lot of trouble here...
**The Blue Castle is the most difficult to place in time. It is set several years before it was published, and in my own opinion: before Tangled Web and Pat of Silver Bush. Why? Because of this reference: "This was before the day of bobs and was regarded as a wild, unheard-of proceeding—unless you had typhoid." (The Blue Castle). Bobs were already "in fashion" at the beginning of Pat of Silver Bush (so, in 1919, when Pat was six years old: it was said that Winnie wanted to have her hair bobbed) and in Tangled Web (which is set in 1922). Yet, the cars, motorboats and movie theaters were a rather common occurence in The Blue Castle's times. But... there might be an explanation. Valancy doesn't live on PEI, which might have been a little "behind" the rest of Canada, as far as modern technology went. It is my own personal opinion, but I think that it might be set just before the war, at the same time as the end Emily's Quest. I know that the clothes seem more "modern" in TBC, but Emily wore "a little sport suit" and dress that was described as followed "there was so little of it". Teddy and Perry both had cars, as sone of Ilse's cousins. I would say that the Blue Castle book might be set around 1912-1913. Still, the timeline is extremely elusive. Please, let me know, dear Blue Castle Book Club's members, what is your opinion? I think I have read some amazing discussion about TBC's timeline a long time ago, but if I remember correctly, everyone was certain that this novel was set post WWI (me included, until this very moment when I tried to place Pat and Tangled Web and remembered the "bob" quote). So I choose 1912 as the beginning of TBC, when Valancy was twenty-nine.
*** the ages of characters in Tangled Web:
"They were first cousins, who were born the same day and married the same day,--Donna to her own second cousin, Barry Dark, and Virginia to Edmond Powell--two weeks before they had left for Valcartier. Edmond Powell had died of pneumonia in the training camp, but Barry Dark had his crowded hour of glorious life somewhere in France." (Tangled Web).
"Virginia Powell, whose husband had been dead eight years and who was young and tolerably beautiful" (Tangled Web).
"Valcartier, Quebec was the primary training base for the First Canadian Contingent in 1914."
- from: https://www.warmuseum.ca/firstworldwar/history/going-to-war/canada-enters-the-war/training-at-valcartier/
So, from this I assumed that Virginia's husband died in 1914 (so Tangled Web is set in 1922-23). Gay is 18 at the beginning, so she would be born in 1904. If Donna and Virginia were 18-20 when they got married, they would be 26-28 (so still "young"). at the beginning. Peter was 14 when Donna was 8, so he'd be 32-34 at the beginning of the book (same age or a bit older than Roger). Hugh was 35 at the beginning. I guess Joscelyn was a bit younger- most of LMM's heroines are at least two years younger than their love interest. I'd say she might have been 20-23 when she got married, so she'd be around 30-33 at the beginning of the book. I would say Brian is about six years old - he doesn't seem to attend school yet, but is big enough to be sent to the harbour. Margaret Penhallow was about fifty at the beginning of the book.
So sorry that this post was rather long, but it was a great fun to write (even if it took me A LOT of time). Thank you for reading. Please, let me know if you agree. Any feedback will be very welcome!

Monster Spotlight: Leanan Sidhe
Tumblr media
CR 9/MR 3
Chaotic Neutral Medium Fey
Bestiary 4, pg. 180
These powerful, influential fairies are patrons of artists of every type, acting as more malevolent Muses who can bless and inspire multiple creatures at a time with their Mythic power. Anyone visited by a Leanan Sidhe (which I've learned is pronounced 'lee-ah-nan shee') rarely realizes what their mysterious guest is, as the Fey can freely disguise themselves as any female Humanoid they wish and typically have an entourage of hired guards and devoted sycophants to lend them the air of a rich eccentric come to pay a visit. Not rebuffing their presence, though, can lead to what at first is an incredible deal... a deal that even a devil would be impressed by.
Before we get into that, let's get something out of the way: it's difficult to speak of the combat potential of a Sidhe, because they're one of the rare monsters to be completely unfit for combat in nearly every capacity. They rely on their at-will Calm Emotions followed by a 3/day Quickened Charm Person to put combats to rest and convert parties into patsies, their sole offensive spell being Crushing Despair at-will. They're even awful in melee, having a single comically pathetic dagger attack for 1d4 damage, their more dangerous attack being a touch which unavoidably shaves 1d4 Charisma from the victim. The Charisma damage will usually put down whatever's gotten in her face, but a Sidhe will likely not stick around to coup de grace a comatose victim unless they're alone.
Their protective measures are potent, having high saving throws, high AC (25), and DR 10/Cold iron and Epic at a level where that's basically invincibility, but despite these formidable defenses, a Sidhe caught in battle will always use her Mythic Improved Initiative to go first, followed by her at-will Dimension Door to swiftly vacate the premises until she can shapeshift into a nondescript woman and leave the conflict altogether.
No, if you've gotten a Sidhe into combat and have measures to bypass her DR and keep her from teleporting away, you've already won. The problem is getting there, because a Sidhe's presence is difficult to detect and even harder to justify stepping in about; whoever she's ensnared will likely defend her to their dying breath, and depending on who her patsy (or patsies) is, they may be the real boss fight. See, a single Sidhe can have up to six victims at once: three with her Skill Blessing, and three with her Spell Blessing, so that's six people fanatically devoted to her continued existence, three of which can be powerful spellcasters and three of which can be famous artists and performers.
Skill Blessing works as such: the Sidhe can freely create a cursed tool, toolkit, prop, costume, or any other such token, which can be used as a masterwork tool for a specific form of Craft or Perform check of the Sidhe's choice. In addition to the normal bonus given for being masterwork, it grants a +4 bonus to whatever check it was created to assist with. The intended recipient of this tool receives no saving throw against its allure, becoming fixated on it and using it whenever they can in whatever project they're working on, and anyone hoping to help wean the victim off the Fey's power finds that the tool always returns to its owner whenever they need it, even if it's lost, stolen, or destroyed.
Spell Blessing is the far more dramatic and terrifying power because of the might it gives to the blessed caster. By being in physical contact with the caster for one full round, the Sidhe can bestow upon them a powerful boon: The ability to recall up to six levels worth of spells each day, refreshing their own magical energy as though they used a Pearl of Power. This allows them to regenerate one 6th level slot, two 3rd level slots, six 1st level slots, or any other such combination to give them more reach than they already had. Both of their blessings make them extremely attractive to casters and artists alike, often to the point where they'll ignore the downsides of this particular arrangement.
See, Sidhe are living creatures, and all that lives must eat. Sidhe just so happen to eat life energy, but not just ANY life energy; they prefer the life of creatives and people with powerful imaginations. Whenever a creature utilizes the blessing granted to them by a Sidhe, the Fey is instantly aware of it no matter where they are, and may Drain Life from them across any range by expending one of their three Mythic Surges for the day (allowing it to feed from the same person 3 times, or three different people once each, etc). Each use of Drain Life deals 1 point of Con drain to the victim and nourishes the artistic Fey, slowly but assuredly killing the victim over time if they have no access to powerful healing magic. Stories abound of artists who come into vast fortunes and blossom with talent, only to swiftly sicken and die, and many of these stories can be attributed to Leanan Sidhe lingering nearby.
Make no mistake, the Sidhe are not fully malevolent, but many of them them possess very twisted morals as befitting of a Fey. Some rare Sidhe may only drain someone's life when they absolutely must, or they may even seek a nobody victim to dump a magical tool upon so they can feed at leisure while they bless a specific creature with unparalleled talent with no strings attached at all! Many, however... well, look at how often a genius artist is celebrated while they're still alive. The Sidhe may believe they're doing their victims a favor by inspiring them to create wondrous things for several weeks before abruptly wasting away so their works are actually treasured.
With a +25 to Diplomacy checks and the ability to, up to 3/day, make a flat 45 Diplomacy check without needing to roll, the Sidhe will be able to convince their chosen victim of their logic, whatever it may be and whatever it may cost them. That's their true danger of a Sidhe's presence--not the Fey itself, but the tragedies they create, and the torrent of emotions that stirs in their entourage if the source of their talent is threatened. A party that even becomes aware of the Sidhe's machinations will have to compete with her other patsies, as well as whatever sycophants and hopefuls she's gathered, all of whom are hoping to be the next one she blesses regardless of the danger it presents to them. They'll also have to try convincing her victims that her blessing isn't worth it so the loss of its power doesn't utterly destroy their willingness to go on, a task that may just be harder than the combat!
You can read more about them here.

10 common filipino words
1.Mano po (ma-no po) / BlessIn some cases, you’ll notice that younger people ask for the elderly’s hand and gently press their foreheads towards the elder’s hand while the elder utters this phrase. This is a sign of respect and a way to accept the blessing from elder people.
2.Oo / Hindi (o-o / hin-di) / Yes / NoTo affirm or agree, say “Oo,” and when you disagree, it’s definitely a “No” or “Hindi.”
3.Salamat (sa-la-mat) / Thank youFilipinos are known for their warm hospitality and acts of kindness. Feel free to compliment them by saying this phrase.
4.Walang anuman(wa-lang a-noo-man) / You’re welcomeIf people thank you for your gesture or act towards them, they’ll recognize your effort and say “salamat.” In return, tell them “walang anuman.”
5.Paalam (pa-a-lam) / GoodbyeWhenever you or someone else is leaving a place or after letting them know that you’re heading home, you can bid farewell by saying this phrase.
6.Nawawala ako(na-wa-wa-la a-ko) / I’m lostTo let someone know that you’re looking for directions, let them know that you’re lost by saying this phrase and expect that you’ll get help (and clear directions) in an instant.
7.Hinahanap ko (hi-na-ha-nap ko) / I’m looking forThen, tell them politely where you’re headed to, or the person you’re looking for. Simply attach the name of a person or place after the phrase: “hinahanap ko ang” hotel or “hinahanap ko si” Ana.
8.Nasaan ang CR? (na-sa-an ang C-R) / Where’s the Comfort Room?In the Philippines, it’s uncommon to say restroom, toilet, or bathroom; rather, they call it a CR or comfort room. So, use this phrase the next time you can’t find the restroom within a mall, restaurant, or any business establishment.
9.Kaliwa/Kanan (ka-lee-wa / ka-nan) / Turn Left / Turn RightConsider yourself lucky if you find a local who’s very familiar with the place you’re heading to. However, if you think you’re more knowledgeable about it, learn to give proper directions so you’ll reach your destination quickly
10.sarap (ang sa-rap) / It’s deliciousYou’ll find yourself getting a taste of a variety of meals and local delicacies during your visit to the Philippines. To let them know how satisfied you are with the Filipino dish and how much you appreciate the chef or cook’s specialty, simply say “ang sarap.”
