Aside from the the twist in the Hizzie plotline, I actually thought this episode was a little weak. But, in no particular order, my thoughts:

I’m super glad that Hope turning her humanity back on was a misdirect. Not that I don’t want it back on, or that I don’t think it should be Lizzie who triggers it, just that scene itself was extremely underwhelming, and if it had been legit, would have thrown the entire “Dark Hope/Vengeful Lizzie” thing that the season has been building up in the garbage.

Lizzie realizing that “Hope” was actually Aurora? I must say. Awfully done. I’m sorry.

The scene where Josie and Finch say goodbye made me realize that Courtney is a really good crier. Idk why, but that stuck out to me.

I’m kind of convinced that Josie isn’t really gone? Ik there were announcements about Kaylee “exiting” Legacies and even posts from her and the showrunners, but the way she was written out doesn’t exactly lend itself to a semi-permanent leave. At most, I think she’ll be gone for most of the rest of the season, either coming back whenever Hope’s humanity is turned back on (since that was the reason she left) or for the season finale. I’m pretty sure she’s only gone for now bc she’s filming that movie. But, if Kaylee does end up wanting to leave the show afterwards, I think they’ll either have Josie pop up every now and then as a guest star, or they’ll have to kill her off (and then she can guest star less frequently as a ghost, as is TVDU tradition). I just don’t see how they would be able to keep up “looking for a way to save Hope” excuse for Josie’s absence past this season, unless they pull a Caroline on Josie.

I’m kind of disappointed by the relatively small role that Aurora played in this episode. I really Hope she continues to recur through Season 4B.

Legacies continues to really really blow it with the wolves. They got used as a flimsy device to keep Finch at the school. It’s not as if a pack is a hivemind like insects and literally can’t function without an alpha. Even if that were true, they act like Jed was fucking dead. Dude, his arm was just broken. Also, why was his arm in a sling afterward? Are healing potions really not able to heal a broken bone? Why do they continue to ignore using vampire blood? Ik there are rules in place about that (probably, since the writers wont give us one line about it and have left the viewers to cover their asses by making assumptions), but if the pack literally can’t function without an alpha, then wouldn’t healing the alpha be an exception?

This episode continues the trend of making me not giving one shit about Ethan outside of Methan/Mizziethan and of making me annoyed at MG.

I also can’t bring myself to care about Kaleb’s redemption arc. It’s not very well done. I mean, implying that he needs a redemption arc in itself is kind of an exaggeration. Kaleb doesn’t need to stab himself in the stomach to save a stranger. He needs to apologize to Hope for selling her body to Malivore and reexamine how his feelings for Cleo made him okay with putting the world in danger. But they’ve separated Kaleb from the Hope storyline and most of Super Squad in general, while having Cleo be the one to “forgive” him over and over.

I posted about it earlier, but damn. That broken neck. A-fucking-plus. It also makes me wonder whose blood Lizzie drank to turn. I find it hard to believe that she’d be able to get a vampire to give it to her, so I’m going to guess that it’ll have been from the werewolf cures aka Hope’s blood. Which would be really interesting if the sireline thing kicked in after Hope transitioned, making it impossible for Lizzie to kill Hope without killing herself in the process.

I’m just so glad that they really went for it with Lizzie not believing Hope would kill her and then Hope actually killing her. And they continue to cross off things on the list of “what would Hope’s emotional trigger be?” It wasn’t her friends telling her how much she meant to them, it wasn’t Dark Josie’s magic snap, it wasn’t a confession of love from Lizzie, and it wasn’t seeing her friend die. And, arguably, (sorry to Hosies), Lizzie is the closest to Hope of the rest of the cast, so if her death didn’t cut it, what will?

I guess I should have said this last episode with the Aurora reveal, but I’m a little disappointed that Triad won’t actually be playing a big role.

I wish I could enjoy the Limbo scenes more. I’m loving Landon, bc all that we’re seeing just shows us how Landon is an honestly good person who deserves so much more than he was ever given, but Matt Davis is too good as playing Alaric as a shitty guy who won’t accept that some higher power has judged him and found him lacking. This whole thing with Matt Davis and Alaric’s character seriously disappoints me. It’s pretty obvious that the writers dialed back on giving Alaric any major roles in the plotlines bc of the new stuff that came out about Matt Davis. It’s just so weird that we don’t get Alaric talking about the complicated emotions that come with Hope beating him to a pulp or having to leave his daughters or getting to see him really struggle with coming to terms with how much damage he’s done over his life. Why couldn’t Ric have been played by a decent human being? Why did they have to cast Matt Davis?

Anyway recast Alaric or kill him off for good, cowards

This new guy. Ben, I think his name is? I’m actually pretty excited to what new thing he and his past are going to bring to the show. From the promo, I’m guessing he’s a deity of some kind? Ig they were foreshadowing when Aurora-as-Hope was talking about gods. Thinking about it now, I’m really hoping he’s not like an Egyptian god like the sarcophagus and the mummy imagery with Ben’s wrappings were lowkey suggesting. We don’t need anymore whitewashing of non-European figures in the world. 

Also, I need some clarification on how old (whether actual age or physical age) Ben is supposed to be, bc Jed’s expression when he saw Ben and how Jed seems to be spending a lot of time with Ben in 4x10 is making me think they’re going down a Ben/Jed route. 

To conclude, the Hope-killing-Lizzie twist was the saving grace of this episode. Josie leaving was better written than I thought it could be, but they gave Finch the weakest reason to stay. MG, Ethan, and Kaleb’s storylines continue to disinterest me, as do the Limbo scenes. But, at least the new character shows promise and we’re getting a Heretic Lizzie.
