Today it is most visible in the contexts of terror, pandemic, and environmental alarm systems; traffic control; work safety; and mass incarceration. In recent decades, the color has become ubiquitous in American public life—a marker of the extreme poles of state oversight and abandonment, of capitalist excess and dereliction. Its unprecedented saturation encodes the tracking of those bodies, neighborhoods, and infrastructures judged as worthy of care—and those deemed dangerous and expendable.

It is profoundly important to Star Wars that Yoda's enjoinder to Luke, that "once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny", is wrong. Completely and totally.

Look at what happens in ESB and ROTJ. In the former, Luke becomes paralyzed by fear (one of the paths to the Dark Side) until he reaches out to his training and lets go. In the latter, Luke nearly kills Vader in a rage, and only stops when he realizes what the Emperor was doing. In fact, he came very close to falling to the Dark Side. And then even more importantly, Darth Fucking Vader turns from the Dark Side and redeems himself.

Yes, it is vitally important to beware of the Dark Side. But it is never too late for anyone to pull themselves back.
