Eddie Dear Character Analysis TW: Mental Health, Sharp objects, Mentions of war, Death of parent.
Y'all better thank me for this analysis cuz I can feel the Carpal Tunnel comin'
He's clumsy to the max - He says it himself that he ran into 3 walls (FOURTH WALL REFERENCE!?) not to mention there's a gag where sometimes He and Frank bump into each other đ. His Clumsiness has caused his Mail Contents to spill, many times: a Picture shows Frank Frankly using his Butterfly Net to help collect Eddie's dropped envelopes.
Mail Courier is a government job? - Prepare to be hit with a bold hypothesis but what if Eddie was isekai'd into Welcome Home? I feel like you can go in and out of the Puppet World so, everyone got isekai'd here? Look, I feel like some dude in / outside the puppet world is paying this dude and probably everyone that has a Job.
Nice skill set dude - Eddie solos the Arts & Crafts segment, meaning he has the best Hand Coordination and Dexterity to handle delicate paper and sharp tools. It's worth theorizing over that Eddie is always there when an obstacle requires manual labor to overcome (according to his bio). So we have a Government Employee that doubles as a Day Laborer, BUT he is also a specialist in Communications Technology - The Restoration Project News Page jokes that if Eddie Dear was with them, he might be able to help program the Website better. So an IT Technician as well? Well damn Ed, Nice Skill Set bro.
Eddie has PTSD? - Okay let's go back to the theme of Mental Health, Eddie might have undiagnosed PTSD (recognized as a mental disorder only in 1980), and possibly is suppressing his own memory, why tho? A bit of a stretch TBH, but if we can see what kind of Person he was, as in a Human Being, not just a mindless puppet he might be something else, but maybe we can guess why.
Ethnicity Analysis Time!!! - Eddie is the most Humanlike in body Proportions, the dude is built like a Marine like damn no wonder he has simps! He also has the most realistic body colors: Ruddy Orange Skin and Red Hair. kinda like the NPCs in Gerudo Valley from Breath of The Wild. For y'all who don't know, Ruddy Skin basically means that you look like ya got sunburned. Ruddy Skin and Red Hair are Traits of Orient-African Descent, or Afro-Irish Descent and y'all already know he has a Southern Accent.
Eddie's Story - Eddie Daor was born in 1942 but due to him having ruddy skin, His mother unfortunately died at birth, I have a headcanon that maybe Eddie blamed himself for his mom dying. Skipping to 1953, at 17 he enlisted into the military as a Communications tech to leave behind his memories about his mother. 2 years later, he reunited with his childhood sweetheart Frank Franklin who was working as an entomologist at a university (Analysis on them later) then in 1969 (before the show debuted) He married Frank in secret. in October 11 1969 He, Frank and some friends you know were isekai'd into the show by the Creator Ronald Dorelaine, transforming into their puppet counterpart with his real name switched out to Eddie Dear instead alongside everyone else, It was covered up as the cast being hired to puppeteer the iconic puppets. On ????? 15 1974, welcome Home abruptly ended along with the cast as the crew and the cast were found dead and an even bigger problem, Ronald Dorelaine was reported MISSING and presumed dead.
Wooooooo! Eddie had it rough tho :( but good thing when it comes to friendship he always deliver! Thank you for reading this character analysis :)!!!!

Thanks for 100 hits on Not With a Bang and 300 hits on Looking Out for Me on AO3!
Although both stories follow the same courier, they take place in different universes so to speak. LOFM inspired me to write a full length fic (NWAB) so it's the same courier but different timelines.
NWAB:
Not With a Bang (23821 words) by ilostmypensandpaper Chapters: 7/? Fandom: Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout (Video Games) Rating: Explicit Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Craig Boone/Female Courier, Craig Boone/Original Female Character, Female Courier/The King Characters: Craig Boone, Arcade Gannon, Raul Tejada, Lily Bowen, Eddie (Fallout: New Vegas), Rex (Fallout: New Vegas), The King (Fallout: New Vegas), Original Fallout Characters, Female Courier (Fallout: New Vegas), Rose of Sharon Cassidy, Manny Vargas, Benny (Fallout), Mr. House (Fallout), Carla's Mom (OC), Carla Boone Additional Tags: craig boone/female courier end game, Developing Friendships, Slow Burn, Friends to Lovers, How Do I Tag, Healing, Friends With Benefits, Canon-Typical Violence, mostly canon i think, Amnesiac Courier (Fallout), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD, Trauma, courier has abandonment issues, Smut, Banter, Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms, Freeform, Mystery solving, Blackmail, will tag as I go, people b catchin feelings, potential love triangle, but not the cliche kind (hopefully lol), Love Triangles, Emotionally Repressed, Denial of Feelings, Friendship, Suicidal Thoughts Summary: Phoenix Vida-Jones truly thought that the world would end not with a bang, but with a whimper. Then, she was shot in the head carrying a platinum chip by a tacky city-slicker. Fortunately for her, she got fixed up with just enough memories to get her by on her quest for revenge. Guess the world doesn't end with a bang. What she wasn't counting on though, is the past she barely remembers coming back to haunt her as she plans to take down Benny and resolve the conflict at the Hoover Dam. Meanwhile, her developing and probably unrequited feelings for a mourning sniper have her conflicted and looking for love in other places. Enter: the King. Boone on the otherhand has enough trouble going on just keeping up with the group's antics, let alone the old wounds opening up as Boone is forced to face the past with the sudden presence of Carla's mom.
LOFM:

They have fought together, drank together, and even shared a cigarette over loved ones lost. Their uneasy alliance blossomed into one of friendship, but now Nix is beginning to want more. When the pair settle back down in Novac for a quick break, will Nix finally make her move where it all started? * First time posting on AO3 so go easy on me lol.

This Protectron robot has a custom-coloured shell in keeping with the aesthetic of Beach City Funland. He was given the name of âMr Smileyâ (by Steven) due to the graffiti someone drew on their face (it was Amethyst). He used to work in Beach City Funland as a ticket taker and ride promoter, until he was kicked out by the current occupants of the park. He now wanders the Beach City settlement trying to ensure that everyone he meets is having a good day.
This police Potectron wanders Beach City. He randomly, but rarely, bothers the settlers of the area as he enforces old world laws which rarely apply to their current living situations. Once, someone (Amethyst,) declared him a âbuzzkillâ and graffitied a sad face upon his shell, earning him the nickname of âOfficer Frowney.â
Ronaldo Fryman: Is a half-mad, pre-war ghoul. He spends most of his days up in the top of the Beach City lighthouse, working on his grand conspiracy theory about the cause of the Great War. It may, or may not, be the only thing keeping him sane. As a ghoul, he has lost a lot of weight over the years, but is still a little more portly compared to other ghouls. He rarely comes out of the lighthouse. The surviving descendents of the Fryman family confuse him. When he is forced to think about the past, and how much time has passed between the war and the present he gets âvery upset."
Greg Universe: Was a wandering wastelander who worked as many things; courier, farmhand, caravan guard, and any other task he could be paid for. He mainly made his living sharing his music when he could. One day he ran into another wandering wastelander who went by the name of Rose Quartz. The two of them shared some adventures together before they returned to the Beach City settlement. When and how Greg lost his leg may, or may not, be related to this time. Today, Greg runs the local water well. He holds onto a building once known as the âItâs a Washâ carwash, which has pipes reaching down into a local aquifer, which provides good, clean, water to the local community. Greg is seen as a respected and fair water-trader, not above giving a tab to those who need it.
Behind the scenes info:
Gregâs discovery of a clean water supply, and his continual ownership of this valuable resource is (likely) directly linked to his close ties to the Crystal Gems. Since Steven would want him to be happy, they too want the same thing, as this would make Steven happy.
Greg losing his leg is a reference to an unused storyline from the show. In the episode Ocean Gem, the creators intended for Greg to lose his leg and, eventually, have it replaced with a robotoic leg. Cartoon Network decided this was too much and downgraded the lost leg to a broken leg, which led us to the episode âHouse Guestâ instead. A nice episode, but certainly very different from what we could have gotten.
Ronaldo being skinny compared to the canon Ronaldo is really coming from the fact that there arenât that many overweight Ghouls in the wasteland. His body is modelled after Eddie Winter, of Fallout 4, who was a pre-war gangster who undertook an âexperimental procedureâ to ensure heâd survive the end of the world. Eddie was the least skinny ghoul that has been presented in game and even then, his clothes seemed to be slightly baggy on him, at least thatâs my interpretation. Which indicated, to me, that even a portly ghoul would lose the body fat that belonged to their original body, given enough time.
I also want to thank theyarheeguy for giving me the idea of Ronaldo being a prewar ghoul. As well as several other suggestions. If I donât credit you in other ideas itâs just that I forgot where the inspiration came from. Please know that my thanks are always with you.

Roger Rabbit and the Ink Machine: Chapter 1
Read on Fanfiction.net here
Read on AO3 here
Summary:Â New York City, 1948. Alice Angel has gone missing. The NYPD laughed at the prospect of a Missing Toon Report, and nobody wants anything to do with Toons. Desperate, Joey turns to Eddie Valiant, the Detective Who Works for Toons. A few months out from the Marvin Acme case, Eddie quickly realizes that something funny is going on at Joey Drew Studios, and he aims to find out what.
Characters: Eddie Valiant, Roger Rabbit, Joey Drew, Henry, Bendy, miscellaneous characters from Bendy and the Ink Machine
Rated T for language
From the Case Files of George K. Fowler, Office of Extranormal Affairs
June, 1947: Marvin Acme, acclaimed comedian, industrialist, and the creator of Toontown, is found dead, apparently murdered by one of the very same Toons he had been supporting for almost two decades. Maroon Cartoonâs Roger Rabbit is believed to have killed him in a fit of jealous rage after learning that his wife, Jessica Rabbit, was having an emotional affair with Acme. Detective Eddie Valiant, of Valiant & Valiant, uncovers the truth: Judge Doom of the Los Angeles Circuit killed Acme and framed Roger to gain control of Toontown. Acmeâs will is found, bequeathing Toontown to the Toons. Valiant begins helping Toons again after several yearsâ lapse, and Roger Rabbit signs a contract with Walt Disney Productions to have his own cartoon.
New York City, 1948
Joey Drew was either out of his mind or an idiot to fly a detective from LA to New York. Eddie Valiant wasnât complaining, his plane ticket, lodging, and time were being paid for in advance by Drew Studios, plus the job itself. (Alright, so he was complaining a little, but odds were good that this would be a simple missing toon case the NYPD wasnât taking seriously, worse case scenario he got to see the Statue of Liberty. He was, after, all, the shmuck who agreed to come out here.)
Drew Studios was smack dab in Manhattan, at Broadway and 3rd Avenue. The building was unimpressive, but apparently it had several basement floors. Joey Drew had a reputation for being a little peculiar, even for a man who worked in cartoons. The front face of the building was dominated by a colorful sign reading, âJOEY DREW STUDIOS.â
Eddie breathed a long-suffering sigh, hefted his travel bag over his shoulder, and pushed through the revolving door.
The studio was alive with the sound of creators at work, and it almost sounded like home. The entrance hall had posters all the way down showing some of the characters in Drew Studiosâ cartoons. Boris the Wolf (less villainous, more hungry), the Butcher Gang (a recurring group of bad guys made up of Charley, Barley, and Edgar), Alice Angel (her mediocre debut was followed up by the fantastic âHell or High Waterâ and her popularity exploded), and of course, studio mascot Bendy the Dancing Demon. Bendy was the big star, and had been ever since Drew Studios started getting some recognition back in â35.
The hall opened into a lobby, and an inter-office courier nearly ran into Eddie, gave a half-hearted apology, and kept on going. There were a couple of young men bickering off to the side, and a projector played an old Bendy cartoon on a screen at the back wall.
A woman wearing a knee-length checkered skirt and red lipstick approached Eddie as he took the scene in. âCan I help you, sir?â she said. She had a distinct Jersey accent.
âYeah, uh, Iâve got a meeting with Mr. Drew?â he said. The secretary, probably, consulted her clipboard and asked for his name. âValiant.â
âHm, Iâm not seeingââ
A sharp whistle cut across the lobby, and a man who definitely wasnât Joey Drew but still seemed kind of familiar strode across the room, up to Eddie and the secretary. âItâs fine, Sherry, weâre expecting Mr. Valiant,â he said. He was distinctly short, white, and slim. He looked young, without a trace of gray in his hair, and had a very thin pencil mustache. He was dressed professionally, but his sleeves were rolled up to his elbows and his tie was thrown over his shoulder to keep it clean. There were dark spots under his eyes.
âAlright, Mr. Hoskins,â Sherry said, and quietly made a gesture like adjusting her collar; he picked up on her meaning and quickly sorted out his tie.
Sherry fluttered away, her heels clicking on the wood floor, and Eddie forced himself to look in any other direction. âSo, uh, Mr. Hoskins?â
âPlease, just call me Henry.â Henry Hoskins, now that was a name that Eddie recognized from his research. Cofounder of Drew Studios, head animator for what little traditional animation they still produced. Despite his significance in the studioâs history, he stayed out of the public eye, especially compared to Drew. âPleasure, Mr. Valiant, Iâm the lead artist here.â Henry held out his hand for Eddie to shake.
âLead artistâ was a roundabout way of alluding to Henryâs bigger role; he was one of those rare gifted people who possessed the power to literally bring their art to life. Some called them, âOld Men,â after Disneyâs Nine Old Men, who had that power to a man.
Eddie shook Henryâs hand. âEddie Valiant.â
âOh, I donât think thereâs many people in this industry who havenât heard of you after last summer,â Henry said.
âYouâd be surprised.â
âWell, at any rate, Iâd like to talk somewhere a little more private. Weâre trying to keep things quiet as long as possible.â
He led Eddie down the left wing to what was presumably Henryâs office, surprisingly small for one of the studioâs founders. There was an ordinary desk and chair, along with a light table that had been in use recently. He probably didnât have people in his office very often, judging by how the desk and chairs were piled high with papers. As Henry moved a heavy-looking binder off of a chair, Eddie looked around a little.
Framed art covered the walls, but especially over the light table. There were character model sheets, concept art, a few posters. Some photographs had been pinned up. There was one of Henry and another man, at least a few years younger. Another was clearly a wedding portrait, showing Henry and a pretty woman with dark hair. Eddie checked surreptitiously to confirm that yes, Henry was wearing a wedding band.
Then there was another photo, this one of a little girl who couldnât have been older than five, and right next to that photo was a childâs drawing of Bendy done in crayon.
âYour daughter?â Eddie said.
Henry swung his head around to see what Eddie was referring to, and broke into a smile. âYeah, my little girl. Beth just turned six. Do you have any children, Mr. Valiant?â
Eddie shook his head emphatically. âNo, no no, that life ainât for me.â
âWell, it isnât easy, Iâll say that much, but I wouldnât have it any other way. Then again, if even half of what the papers say is true, youâve taken on some work far more difficult than raising a child.â Henry threw his hands up as the mess defeated him. âBah. Iâm sorry Joey didnât come meet you himself, heâs scatter-brained at the best of times. Iâwhat in the world is that noise?â
There was some kind of rustling noise coming from the coat closet. Eddie was closer, so he pulled the door open, and a puny cartoon devil came tumbling out, dramatically gasping for air.
âI thought I was a goner!â Bendy wheezed. âIt smells like a sewer in there!â
âBendy!â Henry snapped, but he didnât look all that bothered by it, smiling as he spoke. âHow long have you been in there?â
âUhâŚwhat day is it?â
âSame as when I saw you this morning. Why arenât you on set?â
âCause theyâre still cleaninâ up after the last take,â Bendy drawled, dropping all of the wheezing he had affected. It was a gag, between Toon and creator, maybe not exactly that situation but the format of Bendy cracking wise while Henry was the straight man was nothing new. Not for the first time Eddie reflected on just how weird artists were.
âSo, this the flatfoot whoâs gonna find Alice?â Bendy said, turning his attention to Eddie and sizing him up.
âI hope so,â Henry said. âMr. Valiant, Bendy. Bendy, Eddie Valiant.â
âHmph,â Bendy grunted, and Eddieâs response was more or less the same. He was way too used to being around Toons.
âSo, Alice Angel?â Eddie said.
âYes, thatâs right,â Henry said, sobering. âAlice has been missing for a little over a week. The last time anyone saw her was the Friday before last. Joey tried to report her missing, but New Yorkâs Finest laughed at him.â The sarcasm was practically dripping off of Henry. Bendy murmured something about, â@#&%ing pigs,â with the sound of a bike horn. Definitely a New Yorker.
âNo surprise there,â Eddie said. He held up his box of cigarettes. âAlright if I smoke?â
âSorry, Iâd prefer if you didnât,â Henry said. Eddie nodded and quietly pocketed the box. âWe tried searching for her ourselves, but everyone here is so busy with work. Thereâs been some calls to PIâs in the area, but they didnât want anything to do with Toons. If Iâm being honest, as much as I trust Joey, I objected when he wanted to hire you, Mr. Valiant, but I think heâs panicking.â
âWell, if weâre being honest, I thought it was a little funny myself. As for your little starletâŚâ Eddie set his jaw. âShe wouldnât be the first to go running off into the city for a good time, but she doesnât seem like the type. Anybody check her place?â
âHm?â Henry blinked. âOh, no, Alice lives here in the studio, along with Bendy and Boris.â
Well that explained some of the expansions, dorms for the Toons. It was practically unknown in Hollywood since Toontown was brought to life, and even before then it was uncommon for studios to have private housing for their ink-based stars. Toons werenât treated well in general, but there was still some acknowledgement that they were people, human-like, and wanted to be treated like adults. Unless it was funny, of course. Hell, even Rogerâ
âACHOO!â
The room went very still, as that had definitely not been either of the humans who had sneezed comically loudly, and Bendy wasnât trying to use Henryâs shirt as a handkerchief, and also the sneeze had come from Eddieâs travel bag.
âI, uh, think your bag might have a cold,â Bendy drawled.
Eddie could feel his blood pressure rising. He dropped his bag unceremoniously to the floor, and the impact was accompanied by a yelp. Eddie roughly unzipped the bag, reached in to the elbow, and yanked out a Toon rabbit by the straps of his red overalls, wriggling as he tried to get free. âOh, boy, is it stuffy in there! My ears were burning, was somebody talkinâ about me?â
âRoger!â Eddie snapped, as he lifted Roger Rabbit up so he could look him in the eyes. âWhatâre you doing here?â
Roger rambled, oblivious to Eddieâs frustration. âWell, I heard you were going to New York, and Iâve always wanted to go to New York, so I thought, why not go see New York with my best pal? Then we can solve a case together, just like the good olâ days!â
ââThe good olâ days?â You mean last summer, when you were framed for murdering Marvin Acme and almost got the both of us killed?â
âYeah, just like then!â Roger said earnestly.
Eddie closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and dropped Roger so he could rub his temples. Bendy looked excited, which couldnât be good, and Henry was laughing. âDo I even want to know what you did with my spare clothes?â Eddie snapped.
Meanwhile, a ten-year-old girl in Albuquerque was very confused when she unpacked her suitcase and found a pair of menâs boxers with hearts printed on them.
âPu-bu-bu-bu-robably not!â Roger trilled, and darted away from Eddie to avoid retaliation.
Roger stopped in front of Bendy and gasped dramatically. âOh, boy! I never thought Iâd get to meet Bendy, I just saw the last cartoon you were in! Oh, the artistry! The drama! The tragedy! It was inspired!â Roger cried, swooning.
Bendy was all too eagerly soaking up the praise. âWell, you ainât too bad yaself, Rabbit. Put âer there, pal,â Bendy said. Roger happily shook his hand, and even as Roger was viciously zapped by Bendyâs joy buzzer, he shook Bendyâs hand so strongly that the little devil was lifted up off his feet and shaken up and down. By the time they were finished, Rogerâs fur was singed and Bendy was dizzy and a droplet of ink fell from the edge of his widowâs peak like sweat.
âToons,â Eddie said gruffly.
âToons,â Henry said cheerfully.
Artists.
A knock came at the door, and a blonde kid pushed it open. âHenry, youâre needed on the sound stage. And have you seenâoh, Bendyâs right here, perfect. You should know, Mr. Drew is getting anxious.â
âYes, yes, Iâll be right there,â Henry said. âDo you mind coming downstairs, Mr. Valiant? Knowing Joey, if he doesnât see you with his own eyes heâll end up keeping you waiting a while.â
Eddie just gestured for Henry to lead the way.
There was a lift to the lower floors, Henry explained, but the sound stage was only one floor down. The stairs were easier. Bendy hopped up on Henryâs shoulder and Henry didnât even blink; Roger saw this, looked at Eddie hopefully, and Eddie ignored him.
All things considered, the studio was nothing special compared to the kinds of setups you saw in LA, but you wouldnât know it from the way Henry spoke proudly about starting the studio with Joey Drew, creating Bendy and building the studio into a strong contender, expanding the staff to a fair size, if smaller than some other studios of the same ageâcoming up on fifteen years.
There was one weird thing, though.
âWhatâs with the pipes?â Eddie said, of the clear plexiglass pipes carrying a trickle of some dark black substance. The pipes seemed to run (and drip) everywhere in the building, from the lobby to the offices to the stairwells.
Henry didnât even need to look to know what Eddie was talking about. âMuch like your being here, a result of Joey panicking. Iâm still not all that sure about it myself, I was a little distracted with a newborn, but I have my suspicions. Around that time, before Bendy became real, the studio was having some trouble. We couldnât really keep up with the larger studios out west. Iâm thinking Joey got pulled in by a conman, he was desperate but it could happen to anyoneââ
Bendy cut in when it was clear Henry was going to keep rambling and making excuses. âJoey wanted to try and use some hunk-a-junk âOld Man-in-a-Canâ to try and make me real. Not to, uh, doubt him? But letâs just say Iâm real glad Henry pulled it off before the machine ever got off the ground.â
Eddie made a sour face. âHold on, hold on, he tried to build a machine to make Toons?â
âWell, yes,â Henry said, wincing. âDonât get me wrong, Joeyâs my best friend, but he can be a littleâŚâ
âShort-sighted. Impulsive. Dumb as a box of rocks,â Bendy said.
âAnyways! It was a mess from the beginning, but it never would have worked, Joeyâs Ink Machine,â Henry said. âI saw the blueprints once, most of the writing was some nonsense scribbles. Heâs embarrassed by it, really. But itâd be expensive and messy to take it all apart, itâs just been left as it is.â
âA monument to stupidity,â Bendy quipped, and Henry shook his head.
Joey Drew was even more of an eccentric than rumor claimed, then. Bringing Toons to life without needing an Old Man? He wasnât the first person to try, but there was a reason that studios still employed Old Men. The attempts ended in spectacular failure, and the failures were well-publicized. From what Eddie knew, nobody had really tried to do it in at least ten years. The general conclusion was that it was impossible to replicate an Old Manâs power. Joey must have been really desperate.
The sound stage on B1 was a raucous mess of people moving back and forth trying to get their jobs done. Above the sound crew setting up and testing mics, above artists organizing work, above the cleanup crew getting out of the way, a manâs booming voice dominated the room. âSomebody shut off that fan! I want that playback ready to go on cue this time! And where is Bendy?â
Crew moved aside as somebody pushed their way through, and there was a man Eddie recognized from his picture in the papers, looking a little red in the face from exertion and the stage lights. Joey Drew was a white man standing at about six foot tall, built sturdy. His facial hair was grown out and a little unkempt, and already light hair was shot through with gray. He had clever eyes and laugh lines.
âFinally!â Joey declared. His voice was deep and booming, filling the space he was in. He pointed a finger at Bendy as though in accusation. âJust where did you run off to? After everything thatâs happened, I would think youââ
Henry grabbed Joeyâs hand and forced it down. âGive it a rest, Joey. He was upstairs in my office, meeting Mr. Valiant.â
âWait, Valiant?â Joey said, and for the first time he looked at Eddie. His face was starting to return to a healthier pallor. âMr. Valiant!â Joey exclaimed, with no small amount of relief, and he laughed. âGoodness, I didnât expect you here so early!â It was almost four in the afternoon. âOh, but it is wonderful to meet you in person, put âer there.â
They shook hands, and Joeyâs grip was firm. âMr. Valiant, please do forgive me, but could I have just one minute and then we can go back upstairs.â
Eddie waved him along. Joey pulled Henry and Buddy up towards the sound stage, clapping Henry on the back and they chatted amiably as they went out of sight. Eddie took a few steps off to the side to lean against a wall in a mostly unoccupied corner. A janitor in denim coveralls was leaning over a trash can, rooting around in the garbage.
âLose something?â
The janitor jumped and hit his head on the edge of the trash can and stood up straight massaging the bump. He was a young black man, in his early twenties at best. âNope, didnât lose nothing! I was just, uhâŚâ He had a strong Brooklyn accent. âDefinitely did not lose my keys, nosireeâŚâ
âDonât worry about it, kid, no skin off my nose,â Eddie said, and then he rethought it. âJust one question, though, how long have you been missing your keys?â
The janitor, his name tag said Wally, looked at Eddie funny. âUh, I had them an hour ago? But thanks, anyways. Oh, hell, Iâm outta here,â Wally said suddenly, and darted away as Joey returned.
Joey had his attention split as he opened a small vial. It looked a little like something Eddieâs girl Dolores had ordered out of the Sears catalog, some oil that was supposed to relieve stress but mostly the strong smell just gave Eddie a headache. Running a cartoon studio, though, Joey probably needed all the stress relief he could get.
Joey sniffed the contents of the vial and made a face. âBlast it, I think itâs gone bad. Mr. Valiant, does this smell like lemon to you?â Joey said as he suddenly shoved the vial in Eddieâs face. Eddie reflexively pushed it away but not fast enough to avoid catching a whiff of something that was not lemon, but smelled a lot like eggs that had been rotting for months. Eddie turned away to cough and retch.
âWhat the hell?â Eddie spat as Joey was laughing. Roger came closer to investigate, caught the scent directly, turned green, and dropped to the floor stiff as a board clutching a drooping flower between his hands.
âHa-ha! Oh, dear, I just couldnât resist!â Joey said as he wiped his eyes, tearing up from laughing so hard at Eddie. Eddie just scowled at him. âOh, donât be like that, Mr. Valiant, it was just a joke.â He corked the vial and replaced it in his coat pocket. The smell was still present, but Joey seemed unperturbed. He tapped a finger on the side of his nose. âCanât smell a thing, never been able to, makes the gag just a little more convincing.â
âYeah, well, right now Iâm wishing I couldnât smell.â Eddie really had regained his sense of humor since the Acme case, but that didnât mean he had the patience for some guy who thought that Acme Brand Stink SyrupTM was a replacement for an actual joke.
âOh, for the love of, Iâm sorry, alright? It wonât happen again,â Joey said, and to his credit he sounded pretty genuine.
âRight, well, Iâd like to get to work, if youâre done playing pranks.â
âNow hold your horses, Mr. Valiant, thereâs no need to be hasty. A minute one way or the other wonât make much of a difference.â
Eddie begged to differ, but made himself shut up and stay put. It was hard when Roger was standing behind Joey waggling his finger and making faces.
âThere we go. Now, Mr. Valiant, tell me, have you ever seen an Old Man use their power?â
âYou kiddinâ? Iâm from LA, you canât swing a dead cat without hitting an Old Man.â
Joey pouted at him. âWell, I personally never get tired of watching.â He turned back toward the sound stage.
The crew was settling and clearing the space, and on the sound stage Henry was with an assistant artist on one side and the director on the other, looking over a drawing done by the assistant with Henryâs guidance and input.
There were no bright colors or auditory cues when an Old Man went to work. There was just an invisible shift in the air, like the way light passing through a gap in the curtains moved across the wall. And as Henryâs eyes passed over the empty space, the image in the drawing was reproduced in three dimensions. The floor became a city street, the back wall, a store front. A couple of lamp posts, a manhole cover, the sidewalk, all of it rounded and polished and matching the style of Drew Studiosâ cartoons.
So there was still some wonder at seeing drawings come to life. Everybody was watching quietly, but nobody seemed quite as happy as Henry, even after using his power so many times. It was never mundane to him, how could it be?
As it was drawn by another artist, the set would only last a couple of hours before turning to dust. Only if Henry drew it himself would it be permanent. Nobody quite knew how that power worked, but there was a consistent set of rules to how it could be used.
When the set was completed, Henry was perspiring and grinning. The page in his hand had started spontaneously leaking ink from the center out, and by the time he was done it was soaked through with black ink.
Henry took a step back, and like that, the spell was broken, and everybody went straight back to work.
Joey clapped a hand on Eddieâs shoulder, and Eddie jumped. âAlright, then, letâs get to business.â
Joeyâs office was three times the size of Henryâs, significantly more organized, with significantly fewer personal touches. The left wall had a bookshelf mostly filled with knick-knacks, and the right wall had a couple of newspaper clippings, a magazine cover, and a poster for the Butcher Gang. It was a little chilly, the vent was wide open. Eddie made Roger wait outside the office, which carried its own risks, but it was at least a calculated one.
âSo, Henry already told you whatâs happened?â Joey said as he stepped behind his desk.
âMore or less. You want me to find Alice.â
âThatâs exactly right, Mr. Valiant. Itâs been madness this past week, Iâm at my witâs end. Speaking of, I really am sorry about the state I was in when you first came downstairs, itâs just beenâŚdifficult,â Joey said. âWeâre all so worried about her, the police only mocked me, and I shudder to imagine what could have happened to her.â
âMm-hm,. You gotta understand, Mr. Drew, youâre not giving me a lot to work off of here, and I canât guarantee Iâm gonna find her. Itâs not easy to hurt a Toon, but it ainât hard for a smart Toon to make themselves disappear.â
Joey shook his head. âI hope she isnât hurt, but even if she did run away, she couldnât possibly have done it without help.â
âWhatâs that mean?â
âJust what I said. Alice, and Bendy and Boris as well, theyâre all clever, but not particularly, whatâs the word, worldly. They donât really leave the studio very often, and when they do they usually have a chaperone, either myself or Henry.â
Eddie squinted at him. âNo offense, Drew, but thatâs a little funny to keep Toons locked up in a studio.â
âNot locked up, goodness!â You make it sound like theyâre here against their wills!â Joey said, visibly appalled. âBut, Mr. Valiant, this isnât Los Angeles. There isnât a haven like Toontown here in New York, but people arenât any kinder to Toons here than they are in California. Do you recall Fleisher Studios?â
âSure I know âem. Hell, my brother and I worked for âem once back in the day. They, uhâŚâ Eddie frowned as he recalled the details. Had to be spring of â42, Fleischer Studios was going defunct. The case wasnât actually for Max Fleischer, Valiant & Valiant were hired by Betty Boop and Bingo after the couple moved to California along with some other Fleischer Bros. Toons.
Eddie wet his lips. âRight. The stalker.â
Now it was coming back to him. Betty had a stalker who had been harassing her for some six months. The creep wasnât subtle about it, but he was a human and she was a Toon, so the NYPD would not do a think about it, and the stalker even followed Betty and Bingo all the way across the country. They had been afraid he might try to hurt one or both of them, so Teddy got Betty and Bingo safely to Toontown while Eddie waited at the motel room and gave the stalker the scare of his life. The involvement of Valiant & Valiant did not make the papers, but word of mouth still spread the story among the Toons.
âAlright, I get what you mean.â
âThank you, Mr. Valiant,â Joey said, relaxing a little and smiling gratefully. âItâs incidents just like that one that make me fear for the safety of my Toons. They havenât expressed any interest in living somewhere else, so Iâm only too happy to let them have a home here.â
Persuasive guy, Eddie thought. âSo, whether she left of her own will or not, somebody else had to be involved. Thatâs definitely something to look into. Still canât guarantee anything, but I can do some digging.â
âFantastic,â Joey said, flashing a big grin. âAbout your compensation, I admit that this work is a little nebulous and the time frame is going to be uncertain.â
âAt least a couple days.â
âI thought as much. Weâll stick with the daily rate we agreed upon plus expenses, yes? You do have a reputation for results, and for being a man of strong morals, so I think I can trust that you wonât sit back and do nothing.â
This was already going better than Eddie feared it would. âThat sounds damn fair, Mr. Drew.â
And they shook on the agreement.
âSo Alice lives here in the studio, but does she have any friends outside of it?â
âAh, I wouldnât know, I speak with her less than I would like,â Joey said, as he went to write out a check for the first day of work.
âThen who would know?â
âWell, Henry is certainly closest with the Toons,â Joey said. âBut heâs a tad busy at the moment, and rather worn out. Otherwise, she spends quite a bit of time around our Music Director, Sammy Lawrence. Youâre welcome to speak to him, the lift can take you down to level B4. I only ask that you avoid going into sound stage while it is in use. Level C is under construction but the button on the lift is disabled anyways. And there is one room on this level you will pass on the way to the lift, itâs boarded up, but that is the site of a, eh, project that didnât work out.â
âThe Ink Machine?â
Joeyâs lip curled. âSo, Henry told you about that, did he? Wonderful. Nevertheless, I recommend staying clear. And that goes double for Roger. The last thing I need is Disney on me, on top of everything else.â
That, at least, Eddie could understand.
When Eddie went to leave, he was relieved to find Roger was just where he left him, now chatting with that same janitor from downstairs. Wally wasnât doing his job in the slightest, but was leaning on his mop with the bucket left right where somebody could step in it.
âWally! Perfect timing!â Joey boomed, and Wally nearly fell over in surprise, stood upright, and grinned. âYou can show Mr. Valiantââ
âShow him the door! On it, boss!â Wally said, dropping his mop and pushing his sleeves up.
âShow him the lift, Wally!â Joey interjected.
âShow him the lift! On it, boss!â Wally said in the same tone, fixing his sleeves and adjusting his cap.
Joey clapped his hands together. âWell, Mr. Valiant, on behalf of every one of my employees, I wish you could luck. I believe in you, Eddie, and with the power of belief, nothing is impossible.â He was beaming, and there was a twinkle in his eye.
Eddie nodded and touched the brim of his hat. âLetâs get going, Roger.â
The door closed loudly behind them.
âSo, you find your keys?â Eddie said.
âHuh? Oh, yeah!â Wally said, and kept on walking as he fished out a keyring and jangled it. Roger was intensely fascinated by the keys. âAnd now I get why you were so curious about when I lost âem, if theyâd been lost a while somebody mightâve used them to break in.â
âSmart kid,â Eddie said dryly. It really had been his concern.
âDonât think itâs that much. Aw, geez, Eddie Valiant. My auntâs wild about that true crime stuff. Uh! Not that Iâm gonna mention anything about it until after youâre done,â Wally added quickly. Again, smarter than some of the people Eddie had worked for in the past. âYou are here to find Alice, right? Sheâs quite a gal, just hope sheâs alright.â
Wally took Eddie down a hall, past administrative offices, and down a small flight of stairs to a break room. In the back corner was the lift Joey told him about.
âHey, so, I couldnât help but overhear a little,â Wally said. âYouâre gonna go talk to Mr. Lawrence?â
ââOverheard,â huh?â Eddie said doubtfully. âYeah, thatâs right.â
âCan I give you a piece of advice?â Wally crossed his arms and slouched. âSammyâs pretty much always angry at everybody, and itâs easy to cheese him off. Heâs just damn good at makinâ music so everybody puts up with him. But, if you want to start out on his good side, offer him a cigarette. Heâll probably turn you down, but heâll be a little easier to talk to.â
And that was why you were polite to the janitors: they had the dirt on everyone. âOffer him a cigarette, huh? Iâll keep that in mind. Thanks, kid.â
âYeah, well, no problem, Mr. Valiant,â Wally said. He held out his hand. Eddie frowned, but he shook the proffered hand. âGood luck finding Alice.â
ââŚYeah.â
Weird kid, but Eddie had met weirder in just the last hour. Eddie pushed his hands into his pockets.
The lift was a little rickety and very slow, but better than too fast. Eddie pulled the grate shut, and Roger insisted on pushing the button, but at least he didnât push all the buttons.
As the lift slowly descended, Eddie lit a cigarette. He set his jaw, and noticed Roger looking at him eagerly. âWhat?â
âI know that face, thatâs the Eddie Valiant Thinkinâ Face!â
The worst part was that Roger wasnât wrong. He really had been thinking.
Eddie tapped his cigarette and said, âYou ever see an Old Man work, Roger?â
Roger perked up. âOh, sure plenty of times! Not as much at Disney, but at Maroon Cartoons, all the time!â
âSo, you know what it looks like and you saw when Henry made the set a bit ago. You notice anything weird about it?â
âHuh, weird?â Roger said, and he tapped his chin in thought. âWell, now that you mention itâŚâ He tilted his head to the side. âI ainât never seen an animator get so tired after Old-Manning. Itâs usually easy for âem, right? But Henry looked like he was gonna pass out by the end of it.â
Ignoring the interesting turn of phrase, Eddie nodded. âWhat else?â
âUh, oh, yeah, and the paper he was using!â Roger exclaimed. âIt got all gross and inky, made a whole big mess! Iâve never seen anything like that happen before?â
âMe neither. I already felt like something was up, but now Iâm sure of it.â Eddie pulled out the paper that Wally had quietly given him while they shook hands and held the note up to Roger. âSomething stinks at this studio.â
Written in a heavy hand were the words:

John Witherspoon
John Witherspoon (born John Weatherspoon; January 27, 1942) is an American comedian and actor who has had roles in several films and television shows.
Witherspoon is best known for his role as Willie Jones for the Friday series, he has starred in films such as Hollywood Shuffle (1987) and Boomerang (1992). He has also made appearances on television shows such as The Wayans Bros. (1995â99), The Tracy Morgan Show (2003), Barnaby Jones (1973), The Boondocks (2005), The Five Heartbeats and Black Jesus (2014). He wrote a film, From the Old School, in which he played an elderly working man who tries to prevent a neighborhood convenience store from being developed into a strip club.
Background
John Weatherspoon was born in Detroit, Michigan. He later changed his surname to "Witherspoon". One of 11 siblings, an elder brother, William, went on to become a songwriter in Detroit for Motown. He may be best known for "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" which became a hit for Jimmy Ruffin.
Another sibling, Cato Weatherspoon, was a longtime director of the PBS-TV Network/CH56 in Detroit, Michigan that span almost four decades. John Witherspoon is also related to Lamont Dozier who was a songwriter and record producer well known for hits coming from Martha & the Vandellas, The Supremes, The Four Tops, and The Isley Brothers.
John continued his passion for music and learned how to play the trumpet and French Horn. Witherspoon did occasional work as a model. During the 1960s and 1970s, Witherspoon began to take a liking towards comedy. During that time he began his stand up comedy career. While doing stand up comedy he made many friends in the business. This included Tim Reid (while he was working on WKRP in Cincinnati and The Richard Pryor Show), Robin Williams (also on The Richard Pryor Show), Jay Leno, and David Letterman.
Personal life
Letterman and Witherspoon became such good friends that Witherspoon asked Letterman to be the godfather to his two sons. Letterman agreed. Witherspoon's stand up comedy career led to his comedian film career. His comical character was seen in his movies, TV shows, and now once again in his comedy tour. In 1988, he married Angela Robinson. They have two children, John David and Alexander.
Television career
1970s
Witherspoon's career as a stand up comedian made the transition into acting very easy. His first television appearance was on the 1970s CBS television show Barnaby Jones, which was about a father and daughter-in-law that ran a private detective and investigation firm in Los Angeles. In the episode he appeared in, he played the role of a camp counselor for kids who are drug addicts. The episode he was in was also Sean Penn's first acting job. Sean played the role of one of the kids that Witherspoon counseled in the camp.
After his appearance in Barnaby Jones, Witherspoon appeared in Good Times, What's Happening!! and The Incredible Hulk. In 1977, he became a regular on the series The Richard Pryor Show, an NBC American comedy series. This then led to his appearance in WKRP In Cincinnati in 1978 in the fourth season, episode 84. Witherspoon played Detective Davies.
1980s-1990s
In 1981, he appeared in Hill Street Blues, an NBC police drama, as a businessman who tries to buy a hotdog from an undercover Detective Belker. In 1981, he had an appearance on L.A. Law, an NBC legal drama, in the episode "On Your Honor" as Mark Steadman. In 1986, he was on the television series You Again? as Osborne. Next, Witherspoon was seen on Frank's Place (1987). In 1987 he made a guest appearance on 227, which was an NBC comedy about women who lived in a majority black apartment complex. The final show Witherspoon was in 1987 was What's Happening Now!!, the sequel to What's Happening!!.
A year later Witherspoon was in Amen (1988), an American television sitcom that ran on NBC, as the bailiff. The show was known for being one of the shows during the 1980s that featured an almost entirely black cast.
Witherspoon became known for his over the top characters in films like Boomerang with Eddie Murphy where he plays Mr Jackson, the ill-mannered father of Murphy's best friend. During a hilarious dinner scene, he tells Murphy's "Marcus" to take the upper hand in his relationship with Robin Givens's character "Jacqueline" simulating aggressive sex pumping his hips under the dinner table yelling "Bang bang...bang bang bang". The line has become a signature for Witherspoon and is often heard during his stand up routines. Next came spots on Townsend Television (1993), Cosmic Slop (1994), and Murder Was The Case (1994) as a drunk. Also in 1994, Witherspoon was in the NBC's Fresh Prince of Bel Air and played Augusteus in the episode "The Harder They Fall". Augusteus is the father of Lisa, the girl Will falls in love with, who is seen as stern and almost psychotic. In order to scare Will, he takes him on a plane ride where the two end up crashing and getting stuck in the wild.
Next in line in his television career, he appeared in Fox's Living Single (1997) episode "Three Men and a Buckeye" as Smoke Eye Howard who was the protagonist Overton's uncle, who had a son who was the Buckeyes' quarterback. After this, he played his biggest role in a television series in The Wayans Bros. (1995â1999). The series, which aired on The WB, starred Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans, who played brothers Shawn and Marlon Williams, and Witherspoon as their dad, John "Pops" Williams.
In the first season, Shawn worked as a courier driver, while Marlon worked in his father's diner. The series was somewhat re-tooled starting in the second season, where Shawn and Marlon operated a newspaper stand in the lobby of a Manhattan office building, while Pops' Diner was located in the same building, across the way. The show aired for five seasons and now can be seen as re-runs on BET and MTV2. Also during that time, Witherspoon was on the Kids' WB animation series Waynehead, which was about a young boy growing up poor in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. The show was aired on Saturday mornings and was based on creator Damon Wayans' own life.
2000âpresent
In 2003, Witherspoon made a showing on NBC's Last Comic Standing, a reality television show that selected the comedian out of a group and gave him a contract, in the Las Vegas finals. The show still airs today. Next in 2003 he was seen in The Proud Family, an animation that aired on Disney Channel, as Oran Jones in the episode "Adventures in Bebe Sitting." Finally in 2003 he starred in the comedy show The Tracy Morgan Show as Spoon. Witherspoon appeared in all 18 episodes of the show.
In 2004, he made a guest appearance on the Disney Channel's Kim Possible, which was an animation series about a teenage girl crime fighter who not only has to worrying about worldwide challenges but also family and school issues. He was the voice of Wayne, who was Wade's uncle who was in the episode of rewriting history. Also in 2004 he was in Pryor Offenses, a television movie and played Willie the Wino.
In 2005, he was seen in the Comedy Central talk show Weekends at the D.L. where he played the character of Michael Johnson. The next year he was on another television movie called Thugaboo: A Miracle on D-Roc's Street, a story about a group of kids who find the true meaning of Christmas. In the movie he plays Real Santa, a Christmas singer on the radio.
His next appearance was on The Super Rumble Mixshow in 2008. His latest television appearance was in Aaron Mcgruder's new show, Black Jesus, portraying Lloyd, a homeless man. In 2011 he starred in a Final Destination spoof with Shane Dawson on YouTube. In May 2013 he featured on "Saturday (skit)", from rapper Logic on his latest mixtape Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever.
Music video appearances
John Witherspoon has appeared in a number of music videos in the music industry. He was in the music video for hip-hop superstar Jay-Z's 2000 single "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)". He was also in Field Mob's music video for their song "Sick of Being Lonely". Other music movies include Goodie Mob's "They Don't Dance No Mo'" and LL Cool J's "Ain't Nobody".
Comedy tour
Witherspoon went back to his comedian roots and started a comedy tour that premiered on television on March 28, 2008 on Showtime Network. On his 2009 tour, he has 19 stops across the country. In December 2011, Witherspoon performed his stand up comedy act once again on stage at the Funny Bone comedy club at Harrah's Casino in Tunica, Mississippi.
