On the subject of silly little experiments, here’s another one! I still struggle with foreshortening and painting so I don’t think this turned out perfectly, but it gets across what I was going for. I don’t watch tv very often anymore but I ended up watching Oshi no Ko because I got super obsessed with Idol and the plot intrigued me, and aside from one major caveat I actually really enjoyed it! So like .... What is the deadlands? And how/WHY does Laurens family choose to live there?
It's equivalent to like, Australia in a way. It's like magic Australia. Why do people choose to live in a place where there's such dangerous animals and the sun beats down unforgivingly? Because they live there and they're used to it and they've accommodated for it all, idk.
The Deadlands does get a bit hot, but it's not actually, geographically, like Australia. It's the world's lost-and-found, all that is forgotten appears there, from anything like an old and beaten umbrella, to entire buildings lost to time, floating around endlessly.
Up in the sky, most people live on floating land masses that defy gravity and drift slowly through the gravitational currents of the land. On the ground, there's some pretty dangerous things to look out for, like predatory animals, pits of intense gravity/holes that go down into... forever, or stalagmite shoots that will raise suddenly and without warning. The communities down there have built for that, though.
Lauren chooses to live there because she's been there all her life already. She has a drifting home she likes, loves to endulge in the unusual-- and there's no place more unusual than the Deadlands-- and she can choose to be very hard to locate, if it's what she wants. She partakes in deep studies and projects, and enjoys the solitude + the abundance of resources that float right into her property.
I just scrolled back up to look at the question again. Lauren's *family,* they live there because they are accustomed to it. They too were born and raised there. Lauren has moved out from their home since becoming an adult. But her family still lives in a large, floating community of rich bitches and people with mansions, where it is assured they're not in any danger. But! Still, growing up in the Deadlands, they're all already far more used to the dangers and hostility of the land.
People will live just about anywhere, especially if that's where all their stuff is, too.

I'm finally rendering the animation at full resolution (Shot C: complete; Shot B: 16 more frames; Shot A: hard to determine because it takes ages per frame so I'm using EbSynth where possible but there are at least 30 more frames before compositing) -- which means we're on to prep for the breakdown showoff video and I finally got this buddy a walk cycle slow enough the front legs have more than a single frame for passing from front to back. So luxurious!

The ppl saying "Imagine how much better totk would be if it was on a system that could handle actual graphics" are missing the point so bad and are, frankly, a big part of the reason Western AAA games are in the state that they are.
Totk is perfect the way it is, on the system it was made for, because the focal point of games SHOULDN'T be graphics so lifelike you can see the pores on every character's face. It should be having FUN. It should be solid game mechanics. It should be encouraging the player to play as they want without being bogged down by endless markers, sloppy HUD setups that distract from the game itself, text upon stats upon menus, meaningless "collectibles" or any number of things that so many big game studios seem to think is required now. Realistic graphics are not as memorable as a unique and well-done stylization, and botw and totk both do that well, giving the feel of a story book world come to life, ready to be explored, and practically every rock, stand of trees, cliff face and body of water has something interesting to explore IF the player chooses to do so, and if they choose not to, they aren't punished for it in any way. There's not a numbered list of all the koroks pressuring you to be filled out, there's no requirement that you find and complete all the shrines before you can advance -- you can be as casual or hard-core as you want, and totk literally builds upon that "if it works, it works" mindset.
I literally cannot remember the last time I had such a wonderful time playing a game. I can tell you with certainty that while there have been narratively compelling games, no "graphically perfect" AAA release has come close to making me feel such joy and excitement and curiosity, or let me have such FUN. And, to be frank, lifelike graphics would only detract from the experience imo -- too many resources would go to rendering ~sunbeams in morning mist~ or some equally unimportant shit as opposed to letting me build a Looney Tunes-esque contraption that inevitably kills me the moment I turn it on, all in that ICONIC storybook style
