Checkmate (Wattpad | Ao3)
The Croatian War of Independence, Croatia's POV, requested by heilhuhu, with the title being given by @one-letter-man
Croatia was happy.
That was a strange thing to say when you were still technically at war, but she was happy. The Sarajevo Agreement had just gone into effect, and a ceasefire was enacted between her and the pro-Serbian forces. It wasn’t an end, but it was the beginning of proper peace.
More importantly, it allowed for United Nations’ security forces to enter her country and guard the borders between her and the others, allowing for buffer areas that would hopefully keep the ceasefire in place so the war could end.
She was excited to be a country, a proper one, not just a soviet republic of Yugoslavia. But more importantly, she was excited for peace. She couldn’t wait until she didn’t have to worry about fighting, or massacres, or any of the horrible things that came with war.
It was the chance for a new start.
Croatia would always be connected to her siblings, and she would always still know them as family. But now she had a chance to be herself outside of them, outside of just Yugoslavia, and she was excited for it.
She knew her siblings would think the same.
This was always going to happen.
Croatia couldn’t bring herself to feel too upset, not when she was so excited to experience true independence. She had spoken to UN a few times, and he seemed nice, willing to work to understand her and make sure she felt she had a proper place.
She knew Yugoslavia thought Croatia wasn’t ready for independence, too immature and too young like she wasn’t older than him. She was only kept looking younger by the fact that she wasn’t a proper country yet.
But she was now. This was her purpose, her duty.
Croatia was going to be independent, and she was going to be the best country her people had ever seen.
She was going to make sure they had peace.
She was excited about the future.
Her feelings about her family were more complicated, especially with the array of countryhumans that had spawned in the wake of her bid for independence. But Croatia wasn’t going to worry about that. Her family was dysfunctional at best, and things would smooth over in time, so long as she was patient.
But in the meantime, she had more important things to do.
Independent countries didn’t need families.
Croatia was going to do fine.
