I spent the best part of the past week down in Warwickshire. I grew up down there - and before I discovered the Welsh hills, the leafy country lanes and canal towpaths were the wildest, quietest places I could find. I’d spend hours riding around on my bike, exploring 🙂

Things really haven’t changed that much, to be honest, especially along the canals.

Anyway, I particularly enjoyed a 10km walk with my sister through beautiful Warwickshire countryside, along historic rights of way, bridleways and towpaths. No, it's not mountainous, remote or rugged...but there's a rustic charm I really rather miss.

I was also delighted to find there were butterflies EVERYWHERE! Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell, skippers, fritillaries, whites, Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown, Speckled Wood, and the stunning Marbled White 🙂

Plus there were more grasshoppers and crickets in one big field than I’ve ever seen in one place before. At least half a dozen leaping away from every footstep.

Something else I miss about the English Midlands are the canal-side and country pubs, so stopping at the Tom O'The Wood for an unplanned pint of IPA and a roast dinner was particularly welcome. Especially as it was another teenage haunt of old 😉

Very happy to be back in Braemar now of course, back among the mountains, with snow patches still (just about!) clinging on!

not to sound painfully british (i am) but i think there are few greater pleasures than going to the pub alone. drinking a pint or two, reading a good book, listening in on conversations around you, talking to whoever is behind the bar. bliss.
