I need to talk about how did it end for a second.
how did it end is one of taylor’s best and most thematically complex tracks. I love how she taps into analysis of the archetype and actions that society and even her fans expect from her— to produce profound, emotional music about her relationships, to dissect them with precision and artistry. The world is demanding this, as well as answers to a question she herself doesn’t have the answer to (how did it end), but she shows it almost doesn’t matter as she knows the right words to perform and tropes to exact for the public to accept her art (all the similes and cliches in verses 1 and 2). And then the bridge where she highlights the audacity of the audience: “say it once again with feeling how the death rattle breathing silenced as the soul was leaving.” In other words, describe the darkest moments of your life with the precise level of pain and emotion that we want to consume. Yet in all of this, taylor delivers exactly what she is satirizing— an emotional breakup ballad. It’s beyond.

I always think it’s funny when people think “he jokes that it’s heroin but this time with an ‘e’” means the song is about m*tty. When it’s clearly meant to be Travis making fun of m*tty lmao.

okay i was listening to Last Kiss (TV) by Taylor Swift and then The Black Dog came on last night, and i have some thoughts
imagine Last Kiss x The Black Dog mashup as a surprise song– and the transition thingy between the two is like this
"and i'll watch your life in pictures like i used to watch you sleep, and i feel you forget me like i used to feel you breathe. so i'll keep up with our old friends just to ask them how you are ..."
BUT instead of "hope it's nice where you are," it goes "... and i hope it's shitty in the Black Dog, when someone plays The Starting Line, and you jump up ..." LIKE THAT.

What is there to say about The Archer that hasn't been said before... it's the way it starts despairingly with a visceral ACHE, repeatedly asking "who could ever leave me, darling- but who could stay?" it's the rising climax with an anxious bridge "they see right through me, can you see right through me? I see right through me" "all of my enemies started out friends" it's the desperate "help me hold on to you" repeating the chorus one last time ("I see right through me" echoing in the background) the tempo, tone, and volume gradually falling back down, the hopeful wish "you could stay..." in repetition getting softer and softer (with a hint of the same despair from the beginning) finally ending with "combat... I'm ready for combat" just where we began. The cycle continues; like Richard Siken said, "Someone has to leave first. This is a very old story. There is no other ending to this story." But even still, The Archer leaves you in the end with a sense of maybe... just maybe... it'll be different this time with the nagging fear that it won't.
