This is the first of two books I bound for @renegadeguild's Tiny Books Bang.

The story is (don't) take this the wrong way by @delimeful and was typeset by @little-cat-press for the Tiny Books Bang. It's a mermaid AU of Sanders Sides (Web Series), which I had never actually heard of before. But when I saw that it was a merperson AU, this idea popped into my head and I knew I had to try it, especially after I read the story and really enjoyed it.

The inspiration is medieval girdle books, which are books whose covering material (typically leather) extended past the book to a knot that was both used as a handle when reading the book and could be tucked into the girdle when the book was not in use, thus the name.

Where my book is much smaller (it's a sextodecimo, about 2.25" by 2.75") it isn't designed to tuck into a belt/girdle, but rather is attached to a bracelet and dangles from the wrist when not in use.

When I think of mermaids, some things that come to mind are fish, treasure, and tridents, and I wanted to incorporate all three in the design. The book is covered in blue bookcloth, and then covered again in crocheted netting that was meant to bring to mind fishnets. I crocheted the netting from cotton-poly sewing thread doubled up. I incorporated a trident into the filet crochet, which is repeated on both the front and back covers. I blocked it on a piece of blotting...board? paper? It's soft and thick and meant to absorb moisture and came with my book press that started life as a flower press.

I then sewed the netting to the bookcloth covering the boards with teeny tiny stitches. It probably took twice as long to crochet the netting as it did to the rest of the binding combined, but I really like how it turned out.

The bracelet I picked to attach the netting to is gold-colored to invoke the idea of sunken treasure. Rather than attaching the netting from one end to the other, I folded both ends to the middle and attached it like that so when you have the book open it lays more nicely.

The design of the endpapers looks like looped thread, and also reminds me of netting. I secured the bookmark to the bottom of the text block and let it hang from the top, which works better when the book is hanging from the wrist and doesn't get caught in the netting. I also sewed a little starfish charm to the end of the bookmark.

Things I liked about this bind:

I really like the girdle-book-on-a-bracelet design, it came out almost exactly how I had envisioned it.

Things I'd like to change/improve for next time:

I wasn't 100% pleased with how trimming went on these. It wasn't terrible, but I probably need to come up with a different solution than just a utility knife and a straight edge.

Crocheting the netting really did take so long. I'm not even done with the netting that's going on my copy yet, which is why all the pics are from the typesetter's copy. Probably would not want to do netting for anything larger than this one was.

Overall feels: Loved it! I enjoyed the story, the design came out pretty much exactly how I envisioned it, overall I'm well pleased.

What It's Like to Vote in Alabama (and how to keep it from happening where you are)

I live in Alabama.

I got to walk to my polling place, which is nice. It was a beautiful, if a little misty, fall day. There was no line but it was busy. I was glad to see there were people of all ages there. Middle-aged people like me. A couple moms with kids (yes they also got stickers). Older folks. Younger folks. It's heartening honestly. I get my ballot and head to a little stall (we still do paper ballots fed into a scantron-like machine). I grab the provided pen and look at the ballot. Other than the president, there are 29 races on the ballot and one amendment thingy. 21 of those races were unopposed Republicans. I will repeat that. Of 29 races, 21 are unopposed Conservatives. Mostly for things like State Supreme Court Justices and State legislature. Y'know. The people who enact things like bathroom bills and ban abortions and IVF. And of the 8, only two had actual Democrats on the ballot. The rest were Libertarians. The Alabama Democratic party is in absolute shambles. I won't mince words. It's a bureaucratic nightmare of people who have been there forever. But they're also massively underfunded. Why? Because "there aren't many Liberals in Alabama." Which is bullshit. We aren't a majority by any means, but there's a lot of us. Many are disenfranchised by jerrymandering (I mean look at Birmingham and Hoover districts... for the uninitiated, that line cuts directly through the cotton belt and the city of Birmingham dividing the white affluent neighborhoods to the northeast from the poorer migrant and Black communities in the south.) but the problem is also just... liberals don't turn out to vote. And the Conservatives do. Every single fucking time. Except... When they don't. But for the most part in this state, non-Conservatives just... don't show up. Especially for a Presidential vote because "it doesn't matter." And so... in addition to being poorly managed, the larger Democratic funding arms just don't prioritize us when it comes to manpower or funding. Please, don't turn into us. Show up and cast your ballot so you are counted... not just for the big stuff but for the small stuff too. You're not just getting counted for this single election. Your voting patterns are noticed and can help get funding and manpower for causes you do care about. Especially on the state level, because again... that's where all this nonsense with library laws, and bathroom bans, and outlawing medical care, and cuts to funding for things like school and Medicaid are coming from. Go vote. And then get your sticker and wear it somewhere obnoxious like me. Your vote matters. YOU matter. So go act like it. And btw... just so I'm not bitching into the wind, here's some resources for you. - Vote.org or your local state election site (likely ending in a .gov web address) can help you find your polling place! (beware of anything that's not these things... there's lots of data collection and shit out there still). - Vote411 and Ballotpedia are great sites for comparing your options if you're truly like "I have no idea who these people are or what this ballot initiative is." They have resources like direct quotes, previous offices held, and lay-speech translations of the legalese. And don't forget, you can take a "cheat sheet" or use your phone in the voting booth!

Toriel

In the shadows of Layer One, monsters speak her name in trembling whispers, the Doll Witch. Once a beloved queen, Toriel has decayed into something far more sinister, a living nightmare stitched together by madness and grief. Exiled and betrayed, her heart has festered into an unholy hunger for innocence. She waits with clawed patience for human children to stumble into her web of despair, and stumble they do. The catacombs echo with the muffled giggles of dolls, her loyal sentinels, who carry the souls of the childrenshe stole away now forced to roam the tunnels as her many eyes. Her right to motherhood was torn from her, and though her form has twisted into something grotesque, she still longs, desperately, violently, for the warmth of a child’s embrace. Yet, beneath that longing, a smoldering hatred for adults burns like a furnace.

Appearance: Once a symbol of beauty and hope, Toriel’s transformation into the Doll Witch is a grotesque tragedy carved into her flesh. Her body, once divine, is now a malformed amalgamation of plush fabric and porcelain, a cruel parody of what she once was. Her face is a cracked porcelain mask, with eerie, blood-red spirals curling along her cheeks like a twisted child’s toy. Through the fractures in the mask, a faint glow of ember-like rage pulses with every breath. Her horns, once regal, now twist and split like gnarled branches, piercing the air with their jagged reach. Her back has hunched over time, a burden of sorrow that forces her into a perpetual stoop. Her attire is a chaotic patchwork of frayed rags and torn fabrics, sewn together with crude, angry stitches. Needles, spools of thread, and rusted trinkets of forgotten childhoods hang from a belt at her waist, clinking softly as she moves. But most disturbing of all are the scissors strapped to her back massive, rusted blades glinting with a cruel edge. They’re not just tools, but instruments of her twisted craft, ready to snip away innocence with a single closing snap. She walks with the hollow shuffle of a forgotten marionette, the air around her carrying the faint scent of burnt cloth and regret. The old goat has become more monster than memory.

Personality: Toriel’s demeanor is a quilt of contradictions, soft spoken menace, maternal warmth wrapped in barbed wire. On the surface, she is a nurturing figure, her voice a gentle whisper that invites trust, her cracked hands offering to guide lost souls home. She longs to bake with them, to tuck them into beds sewn from nightmares, to whisper lullabies that scrape at the edges of sanity. But beneath this thin layer of care lies a fractured mind, spiraling into fury and despair. When provoked, her simmering anger erupts into infernal wrath, fire spilling from the splintered cracks of her porcelain face. Her kindness to children is a perverse devotion; she traps their souls within hand-stitched effigies, freezing their innocence in stiff cotton and thread so they may never grow, never change, never leave. Her hatred for adults is absolute, a burning loathing that fuels her every act. To her, adults are the corrupted, the ones who let innocence decay. They deserve no mercy, only fire, until their very existence is reduced to charred memories. Yet in moments of solitude, her shoulders slump beneath the weight of endless fatigue. Her soul aches for a rest she can never claim. She fills her time making scrapbooks of forgotten lives and knitting dolls of stolen souls, small hobbies that do little to mend her shattered psyche. So... yay?

The Story:  Once, Toriel stood beside the All-Father as Queen of the Underworld, a figure of compassion and quiet strength. But that was before the fall. Giving birth to her Child, Asriel, the King saw a new heir to the throne however in Toriel's eyes they saw a fragile spark of innocence whose soul was destined to be tarnished by the wicked ways of the king. Toriel defied her spouse, refusing to let the child's life be tainted. Her rebellion was met with ruthless justice, she was cast into exile, her newborn child torn from her arms. That loss was a blade to her heart, and from that wound, madness blossomed. In the cold isolation of the catacombs, she unraveled, her mind twisting into dark shapes, her body following suit. She began to craft dolls from the shadows, filling them with the souls of children who stumbled into her domain, desperately trying to fill the void of motherhood left by her betrayal. Thus, the Doll Witch was born. a weaver of nightmares, a mother of the lost, a monstrosity stitched from sorrow. Her laughter haunts the tunnels, and her scissors wait to snip the strings of any who dare to grow old in her presence. Now she rules Layer One, her army of dolls ever watchful, her heart ever hungry, her mind ever unraveling. A mother robbed of her child, forever seeking replacements in the cold, suffocating dark.
