June 30, 2024:

Tales of political intrigue are tough for me to follow and usually not interesting enough to be worth the effort. And this book is trying to do A LOT. The plot is really unclear because there's just, so much of it, and it's going in every direction. Are we breaking someone out of prison, or are we solving a murder, or are we trying to win an election, or are we being invaded, or are we bringing a corrupt official to justice, or are we escaping a rogue foreign dignitary, or are we in a hostage situation, or are we scheming to get mommy's attention, or are we running away from her expectations? What do you mean all of the above???

What kept me going was the worldbuilding. I was delighted to learn more about these various interstellar cultures, and I was just as delighted to learn about it in a natural way instead if it being exposition-dumped all at once. This book trusts me to piece it together along the way.

So like for example, the main homeworld has a gender trinary -- he/she/e -- and they/them is reserved exclusively for children, who choose their adult name and pronouns when they decide they've become an adult (and there are societal norms about what age is expected for that choice). Some adults are given another name later as an inheritance, and both people with the name are considered equivalent. It's sort of a name as a title situation. Nobody comes out and explains this to anyone, because of course they wouldn't! It's normal to them! I liked picking these things out, especially since there are several worlds mentioned, and you can tell what things are like based on what the characters think is weird about other cultures. Honestly, I would have been happy for a book that focused more on that and less on the overdeveloped plot.

I stand here today to pay tribute to a kind soul, a stubborn heart, and a genshin impact addict; my best friend Ash.

I knew Ash for around two years.The first time we met, I was stealing dandelions from his world. Never did I know that I would soon be stealing OCs from his house.

He didn't like Madds Buckley at all. As I learned soon after we met, Zhongli was his favorite genshin character, so I placed a body pillow next to him in the casket today, so they may be together forevermore. He was the most straight person I knew, however, so it’s a genderbent pillow, so no homo. It has huge bazonkers, can confirm.

Everyone agreed that he was the gingeriest ginger to ever ginger, the swiftest swiftie to ever swiftie, and the weezeriest weezer fan to ever weezer. To say that he resembled Childe from Genshin Impact would be an understatement.

He absolutely hated the gays. Most homophobic and transphobic person l've ever met. Thought neopronouns were the most stupid shit ever.

Ash was also a very passionate writer. His primary work was PDGG. The main relationships were very straight. Matthew's girlfriend was Salveria and Alex was canonically dating Aria. All of his OCs were also, cis and straight. His OC Orion was the most empathetic, kind character he ever created. And definitely not inspired off of his ex who doesn't exist because Ash was very very straight and homophobic, not to mention transphobic. He spent his Sundays at Floridian Trump rallies yelling at little gay children.

The only man he felt more than straight fondness towards was Donald Trump, whose spray tan he adored. If a show gave off any queer vibes, and if there were any short, depressed, pretty male characters, he would automatically despise them.

He loved the Mike/El relationship and hated Will. Ningguang/Zhongli was his favorite Genshin ship, and he also self-shipped himself with Taylor Swift. He was also part of a band called Corrupted Virtue, which was composed of people who shared his homophobic, transphobic views. Fuck them gays, amiright?

Now, onto a slideshow of women that his best friend Ara found hot. Afterwards, we will be listening to a eulogy given by his beloved father, to whom Ash was very close. Rest in Peace, and your ocs are now mine. <3

Hmm. How to start.

Things I liked: Magic bisexual pirate lady plot, the scale of the story, the worldbuilding, the crow boy/god(?) plot, the various obscure types of magic

Things that did not work for me: the Political intrigue plot (complicated & boring), the way the worldbuilding is introduced (huge history dump), almost but not quite finishing the story at the end with no complete arcs (sequel bait! 😠)

I will say that this is a real challenge to listen to in audiobook form because of all the unfamiliar words & names. I can tell there's a lot going on here, and I'll admit that I for sure didn't get the full effect because I sometimes just let the words wash over me without putting the work in to understand. That's on me, not the book.

Intercusper is a term and flag coined by @isobug and inspired by the term Cusper (specifically the flag and definition which were compiled by @beyond-mogai-pride-flags) describing someone whose gender identity is on the cusp of being transgender or gender non-conforming in a way directly related to or caused by the individual’s intersex variation or experience!

This Magical Kid has a Heavenly Bodies Theme! It uses He/They/She/It pronouns and Cel/Cer/Celes/Celeself, Glim/Glimmer/Glimmers/Glimmself, Rev/Rever/Rie/Reverself, Halo/Halos/Haloself, and Cherub/Cherubs/Cherbuself Neopronouns!

Her name is Jemima, a biblical name that means dove, but they’ll also go by Gem! Glimmer can smite enemies, which essentially means burn them to a goddamn crisp once halo gets halos hands on them. Well, technically all the fire does is burn out the evilness in their heart/all ill will but it certainly LOOKS like they can just set people on fire at a touch. It’s very useful for intimidation purposes. They can do this to allies as well- it has no effects other than setting them on fire, but the fire doesn’t hurt. So basically Jemima can create an infinite fire source by lighting an ally on fire and pointing them towards a particularly flammable group of enemies.

Its Magical Kid Weapon is a flaming sword which… honestly can’t do much? It’s hot, sure, but if an enemy’s close enough for Gem to even USE their sword they are close enough to smite.

A useless fact about rever is that rev is…. A tiny bit outcast by the general Magical Kid population. You see, the main antagonist (who will here be gaining the moniker The One) has a very heavy holy theme, and when they corrupt civilians they take on an Angel theme. Essentially, Jemima’s appearance is the equivalent of someone with long black hair and red eyes ominous standing around. Sure, a lot of magical kids are friendly, but most of the older ones steer clear. It’s a little grating on their confidence. Another useless face is that their eyes are always closed.

Ask anyone about corruption in the hive. Ask if it is a popularity contest and they will agree. Only popular people get euphoria, or sympathy, or replies, or advice. Ask people who were in crisis if they got advice or if they were silenced. Ask if managers elected their friends and not the best candidates. It is obvious.
