I was thinking about Xayah and Rakan from League of Legends today, specifically them in the Star Guardians storyline. (For those who don't know, Star Guardians is League's take on magical girls)
In the storyline Xayah and Rakan are a couple, deeply in love, and on a mission Xayah starts to get corrupted so Rakan sacrifices himself to save her. Now she has to live with the hole his absence has left and the guilt that she is carrying over the whole thing.
Now, the two of them are always together in every other storyline, they even get animations together and moves that help each other in game. They are a husband and wife duo. They are MADE for each other.
I think the concept of seeing the whole aftermath of a soulmate sacrificing themselves to save the other is deeply tragic and romantic and I really wish some books would explore this more.
Idk just thoughts I had

First, enjoy your art. Fun times
Second, who do you think would win in the corrupting mega villain department. Star guardian Zoe or Darkin Zoe. They are so similar (thou for totally different end games) I can just picture them having an argument on who's the better big bad evil.
THEY ARE SIMILAR . Though in SG universe Zoe isn't a pure evil girl, she just cares about her friend and she wants her to come back or something..... Anyways, I don't remember that part, cuz 2022 SG event was boring as hell for me. But what I ABSOLUTELY LOVE about this Zoe how freaking chaotic and crazily evil she was with the whole city AND especially with Rakan & Xayah which became her minions for some while.
And Darkin Zoe....well the concept is great, and in her splashart we see how she just obliterates planets with her power so and also we know it's a corrupted version of the Targonian Zoe which is like THE STRONGEST ASPECT THERE. I guess this one takes a win of being an ultimate boss in the game.

hi, my apologies for bothering you, but I read your sorta storytelling post about Starguardian/corrupted Guardian Xayah stuff and I loved it. it actually had me thinking of fun little verse things I do with my star guardian verse for my oc blaze, one of the big things was that because blaze does tennis too, her and xayah are like partners in doubles matches, a sorta opposites attract partnership, one more to herself while the other is sociable, one plays back with groundstrokes and keeping the rally consistent while the other lurks and strikes when ready.
anyway, wanted to just share that
no worries! thank you for reading the ramblings of a random roleplayer! it warms my heart when others like my thoughts and it's even more exciting to hear they inspired your own!
that is definitely intriguing, though! and i can see it in a unique twist! i imagine xayah would focus mainly on singles, but with her speed and strikes, she would make a fine doubles partner... but would be tricky to work with! so the two of them making a talented duo would be quite imposing, and i'm sure rakan forces xayah to learn to play nice....ish hehe!
thank you again for your thoughts and time, i really do appreciate it! apologies for delay on responding on my end, i am on the slower side these days especially during the work week. hope you are having a lovely week yourself <333

What inspired your current book (published or WIP)?
In April 2017, League teased "The Harpy and the Phoenix." A lot of people at the time theorized it as a new Quinn skin, haha, but it ended up being dual released champions.
Lovers.
I was instantly curious as to why they only had one wing, so I started jotting down ideas for a story. I only wrote a very short clip at the time, but I revisited the concept in January 2019. Initially, Roshan was a lackadaisical guard and both he and Mika lost a wing. Opposite wings. But as I wrote and edited, it was no longer necessary for him to lose a wing, so I decided against that. Roshan was also supposed to be corrupted by the end of book one (when it was a duology), but then Riot released (corrupted) Star Guardian Xayah and Rakan in September 2019, so I axed that path too. As much as SOUL-BOUND started from X/R (primarily this particular teaser), it's not a fan fiction.
Mika's not a rebel. She's a sheltered princess like Rapunzel from Tangled. She's brash. Tsundere (thanks to watching Toradora during revisions). She's on a quest to heal her corrupted world and just so happens to meet a very charismatic vagabond. Roshan is largely based off my husband in a lot of ways. He's the golden retriever in our black cat/golden retriever relationship, so I made Roshan the sunny one.
I gave them a sun and moon dynamic to help name them. Their meet cute happens in a tavern because of Taylor Swift’s song "Gorgeous" since Roshan has ocean blue eyes and Zayn was originally Mika's betrothed.
Anyway, they've been my passion project for 5 (technically 7?) years and finally published them! I hope it reaches others and finds its audience. I hope if you're a Xayah and Rakan admirer and give their book a chance, you like them too.

This artwork by 140 jka got some creative juices flowing. Namely how it is a Star Guardian's fate to either die in battle or become that which they've sworn to destroy. Not to mention what a corrupted Ahri would actually be like. And the effect her fall from grace would have on those that care for her.
It... wouldn't be pretty.
And I think a lot of her ire would be directed towards Rakan and Xayah? Several things surrounding their relationship could be subverted to take on a much darker tone. The Lhotlans' death not the least of them. Right, I'mma gonna start there. Especially since it's my belief this'd be the deepest roots of Ahri's corruption. Events on the Lonely Planet literally broke her heart. Having to choose which friend to save or watching all of them die.
A corrupted Ahri? She's just awful. Resentful of Xayah forming her own team with Rakan. Feeling as though she were the one abandoned. Cast aside for her failures. Like she wasn't 'good enough'.
The thing to note there is that, on some level, Ahri already feels like this. The corruption only brings these sorts of emotions to the forefront, making them more pronounced.
Original artwork found here.

" i'd happily go kick their ass, but i don't think that would help you. " (from @spirithunts, maybe sg?)
@spirithunts ✧.*
𝐋𝐔𝐗𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐀 𝐏𝐇𝐘𝐒𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐒 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐅 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐀𝐓 𝐀𝐇𝐑𝐈, all fists and curses, violence and yelling.
what hurts most is that ahri is right. she could go after sylas and she could attempt to fight the corrupted star, but that wouldn't make lux feel any better. it's not about ❝ kicking ass, ❞ but about purifying.
the younger guardian clenches fists, her expression a frown, eyes heavy with tears already blurring her vision.
❝ i know, ❞ she whispers, lowering her head, body trembling. ❝ you're right, as always. you don't even know how i envy you — for not having to deal with it. ❞
little does lux know about zoe, rakan and xayah — the turn of events will probably delay revealing the information.
...or will it not?
#spirithunts#v : burning brighter { star guardian }#i didn't have an idea of who could ahri fight#so i went with corrupted sylas LOL

Stuck at work rn, but I'm scratching my brain over SG!Yzl
Before SG 2022 released, I had her pinned as an outer Guardian like Syndra and Nilah.
But after the event was over and we had some lore on Fiddlesticks... I really think Yzl would be a Nemesis--a Star Guardian that has fallen into the deepest depths of dispair and hatred.
But that also makes me wonder: What seperates Nemesis from Corrupted Star Guardians (Zoe, Rakan, Xayah, and also arguably Syndra and Akali)?
Well, personally.... I think Nemesis are devoid of "hope", the very thing the First Star stands for.
Out of all the Corrupted, Zoe and Syndra might be the hardest to identify "hope" in. But they also don't seem to outright hate the Guardians the same way Morgana does. They're not keen on Morgana's plan to spiral the universe into entropy.
On the flip-side. Rakan and Xayah, as well as Akali, are the easiest to see hope in. Both groups anchor themselves to another and rely on them to keep them stable.
Xayah and Rakan rely on eachother (Xayah fights for Rakan, and Rakan wants to save Xayah from her hatred towards Ahri).
Akali grounds herself on the promise she and Kai'sa made. They're best friends, and neither of them want to lose that to Morgana's plans.
But back to Yzl. Based on everything my brain has spit at yall, why would I say Yzl would be a Nemesis? Why not just a Corrupted?
Well, I really think Yzl would lose hope. She would realize The Oath is founded on empty promises and unavoidable sacrifice. While she gained the power to protect those close to her, she would eventually realize there is no happy end.
Her friends and everything she vowed to protect was gone. What now? What purpose did she have? None. She no longer had purpose in the eyes of the First Star--her oath was broken.
But she did not turn herself over to malice as Morgana did. Many saw Yzl as the enemy--a being that appeared and scattered the light of many Star Guardians.
But her goal wasnt of malice. Her means were cruel, but her goal was something she wished she could achieve herself.
Yzl wishes to believe there is still hope, somewhere, for this dying universe. So she challenges Star Guardians, testing their resolve. Testing their willingness to go the extra mile for the oath. For eachother. For the hope that binds them together.
She did not want a repeat of her own fate. She didn't want any more dispair.

Enemies/Star nemesis:
Zoe:
Likes referring to fights as games. Everyone’s a playmate or a toy. Usually the latter.
The reason why Lux became a statue was when she used a powerful technique to stop Zoe’s attack on the city. Since then, Zoe’s been recuperating strength, waiting for the day she can get some sweet payback.
Had a pet void-monster. Lux exploded it in the big battle.
Her plans are usually: “Fight the guardians, kill them, celebrate.” Xayah tries to say that they’re good, but she’s lying.
Deep down, beneath the childish cruelty and chaotic nature, there is a wounded soul. A soul that just wants to have her friends back.
Corrupted guardian Xayah and Rakan:
Both of them:
Their lovey-doveyness makes their enemies sick. It’s a perfect distraction.
“Aw, look. Junior guardians. Aren’t they just the cutest?” “Sure are, time to kill ‘em.”
Basically like Team Rocket, very haughty and smug to Lux’s team. It’s partly a front.
Just Rakan:
“Hey, foxy. Remember me, didn’t think so.”
Makes a list of villainous taunts and words. He’s a big fan of “quaint” and “star-losers.”
Despite his jokey approach to battle, Rakan is smarter than he comes off. He gets more aggressive towards Ahri.
Often tries taking hits for Xayah. She often tosses him out of the way and calls him an idiot. One day, he’ll get to pull it off.
Just Xayah:
“Hey, Ahri. Miss me? Yeah, didn’t think so.”
As a contrast to her lover, Xayah is far more cold and dispassionate.
She knows that something is up with Zoe, and is trying to work out a plan. She’s not going back to the Star-Loser’s, no way, but she and Rakan aren’t puppets for Zoe to play with.
Taunts Lux about how new she is to all of this. “You think this life is some fun adventure where you blast the bad guys. Let me tell you, it’s not.”
Despite her complaints, she likes how Rakan constantly jumps to protect her. It’s sweet, if a tad cheesy.
Star nemesis Morgana:
Currently spending time observing the new group, picking up on their weaknesses. The one with the ninja mask seems to have doubts. Doubts that can be used to control her.
The only thing she actually treats with care is her familiar. They share a love of destruction.
Ages ago in the past, she had a sister named Kayle who wished for cosmic order. As siblings are want to do, they fought. Morgana won. Sorry, sister.
Star nemesis Fiddlesticks:
Practically Runeterra Fiddlesticks but with extra glitter and a priority of ruining SG lives. It isn’t really loyal to Morgana, but they have a common cause.
The familiar is a weak point, but good luck hitting it.
Has a strange fondness for chess motifs. A holdover from Harp?

So I watched L.ight and Shadow tonight, and the one thing I want to update, headcanon wise, is how Rakan absorbed her darkness within this short. Nothing much has changed, but I do want to be more specific. I fully believe Rakan was sharing what little light he had remaining inside him with Xayah within this moment. Not all of it of course, but just enough to help calm the swirling corruption within her form. But by doing this, the Lhotlan WILL NOT get the light back since it's with Xayah now. He is practically SACRIFICING a little bit of himself each time he has to share with her. In turn, it causes the darkness to further creep towards his struggling, dimming light. It's a brutal internal fight he has stave off. The fact that the corruption appeared on his skin soon afterwards is a telling sign that it's a SLOW losing battle. One he is highly aware he won't win, but he still FIGHTS for Xayah's future. So I believe he did not absorb XAYAH'S corruption, it's his OWN. Thus, every time he shares more of his dwindling light with her, those patches are only going to grow bigger. And they are going to be a lot harder to fight off. And in this moment below, it's now taking up his entire arm, which probably indicates that he has ALREADY shared his light often with her. And with the way he is somewhat kneeling in pain in this shot, I wonder if there are other corrupted patches littered about his body. Also, the camera being tilted definitely means there is unbalanced chaos happening within :C

Rakan - Riot Verses
*Most verses are linked with Xayah as their skins are often released in pairs. However interactions with other character can of course occur without Xayah's presence or (if shipping is of interest) in verses in which they do not meet. Feel free to talk to me about it. Below are his standard, as Riot writes them (mostly) skin line verses.
Standard
Rakan can be seen in towns across Ionia, dancing and singing for the enjoyment of others (and himself, of course). He's long since left his home lands in order to learn more about the invading humans in hopes that he can draw their attention to the plight of the wild magic and the vastaya. He's vibrant, loud and always on the move. Most recently, he can be found with Xayah and her freedom fighters. He loves her more than even himself and is willing to do anything for her and their people.
Cosmic Dawn
Rakan is the dawn itself, a sun rising above the horizon. He dances through the cosmos, bringing light to the darkness, following forever after the shadowy dusk ahead of him.
Star Guardian - Corrupted
When their last mission went south, Rakan and Xayah were left to die. After watching Xayah take her last breath, Rakan followed shortly after. But the two were soon revived in the shadow of the Twilight Star, filled with hatred and resentment toward the team that abandoned them. And while Rakan laments his death, what he truly cannot forgive is watching Xayah fall before his eyes. Even in their second life, she struggles with her corruption and Rakan mourns his lost love. Now, he'll do anything to keep from losing her to the darkness completely, even if it means defeating his former friends.
*a verse after he 'redeems' Xayah but is still corrupted is also available
Star Guardian - Redeemed
Rakan's attempt to sacrifice himself in order to save Xayah is short lived but not entirely unsuccessful. She manages to track him through the cosmos and through the light of the First Star, his mind is freed from the darkness. He's now returned once more to the light, reunited with his home once again.
Elderwood
Rakan is the young fey prince of the Elderwood's Seelie Court, the Day Court. A monarch in all senses, he's endlessly curious about the world beyond his kingdom. Most recently, he's been meeting with the Unseelie Night Court's Princess Xayah, a rival turned lover. While his people object to the union, wishing to remain within their brightly lit dream, Rakan can't help but be drawn to that which he doesn't know. Perhaps a dance partner is just what his kingdom needs.
Arcana
A resident of the poorer Lower World, Rakan's life was simple. So long as he had his music, he was content, even as he existed underfoot of the Archetypes. But after a chance encounter with the Higher Arcana's Xayah, he is anything but content. Not until they can be together. And even if the world itself should rewrite the patterns set before them, he won't stop until he's beside her, following her in their forbidden dance.
Broken Covenant
Rakan once lived contently as a poor thief, eking out a simple existence with his lover Xayah. But his antics brought him too close to the sun and he soon found himself at Vladimir's mercy. On the verge of death, Xayah pleaded for his life. In exchange for Vladimir's mercy, Rakan was revived as a Neverghaast, a being not quite dead but hungry for the Breath of Life, Aspira. Xayah, to pay her debt, spies on the world above. And Rakan, now trapped in the shadows, fears the monster he's becoming.
Dragonmancer
The only thing Rakan has ever taken seriously in his life is his love. While seeking new strength and new dances, he is swallowed by the darkness of his worst nightmares. But no shadow can hold his brilliance for long. Thinking only of Xayah and the life he longed for fighting beside her, he emerged victorious and banished the shadows away. The Devotion Dragon, watching from on high, saw a kindred spirit in Rakan and granted him power to match his soul.
Modern (Musicverse or other similar riotverses)
Rakan learned to dance before he learned to walk and he's been moving ever since. Now, he lives life to the fullest, a full time dancer combining the traditional dances of his heritage with a more modern twist. He has an avid social media presence, performing anywhere from clubs and theaters to street corners and protests. He believes dance and music are forces to bring people together. And if he can use his powers of beauty and theatrics to help his renegade girlfriend fight against The Man, then all the better.

ꕥ — WELCOME TO NEFE COSMIA, RAKAN (STAR GUARDIAN). 🌓
ꕥ — OOC INFORMATION;
name / alias: hunter age: 24 pronouns: she/they/it ooc contact: snearthworm on twt other characters in xc: adante (oc), ruby rose (rwby)
ꕥ — IC INFORMATION;
name: rakan age: 21+ physically, actually a baby immortal and has been kicking around for ummm. a couple decades probably. who’s to say. pronouns: he/they series: league of legends (star guardian universe) canon point: pre-redemption, right in the middle of his evilness app triggers: canon-typical violence, self-sacrifice
personality:
rakan can’t help it if being bad just feels sooo good!
c’mooon, is it really his fault if this corruption just brings out the sparkle in his eye? he’s embraced evil like it’s all a game to him, as if the suffering left in his wake is nothing more than a corny joke. that’s the problem with these “good guys” -- they’re all just nerds that take themselves way too seriously. it’s way more fun to let your spirit die and accept that love isn’t always enough to save you. like him!
has he mentioned yet that his eyes sparkle? if rakan embodied anything other than evil, it would be hotness. definitely hotness. the easiest way to distract him is with a mirror, because hello, have you seen him? if you looked as good as he does, you’d be a little vain too. he just takes his vanity to the extreme, ‘cause why do anything halfway when you could do it…uh, fullway!
also, moral codes are for losers. super important to him that you know that. (blah, blah, don’t release void creatures on a busy street, rakan!) (blah, blah, we know you still remember who you are, rakan!) jeez louise, grow a sense of humor already. he’s just here to have fun! sure, his idea of fun means dousing the world in fire and chaos, but hey, it’s not like it’s his fault!
he’s just a husk. remember?
the rakan you probably knew is long gone. all being selfless and kind got him was a lonely headstone, so if you really want to reminisce about old ghosts and warm smiles, you can go visit that instead. just leave him out of it.
the corruption deteoriating both his mind and body has pushed most human emotions far past his own reach. there’s not much left now, and what does still remains fades more each day. there are only twisted, detached impressions of things like love and loss. and fleeting thrills of twisted joy that he chases, chases, loses-- agh, he hates being bored!
why does he need to remember who he is, anyways? maybe he likes the way he is now! being bad just feels sooooo good!
(maybe there’s another reason he spends so much time staring into mirrors.)
your muse’s greatest strength: his stunning good looks, duh. can’t defeat the forces of good without looking good! please, make sure you get his hot angles when he’s busy destroying everything pure and bringing about a new age of darkness. ooh, riku, that reminds him, have you seen his hair gel? he’s almost out.
something your muse struggles with: sometimes when the skies are particularly silent, he can still hear the first star calling to him.
history / background: they used to call it being “sparked.” that’s when the first star appears to you and asks you to take up the mantle of whatever heroes were just unlucky enough to get turned into stardust. that’s the fate of every star guardian, rakan would one day find out. to burn bright, burn fast, and then burn out.
rakan was young when he was called. he didn’t know any better. he had just wanted to do good.
there were others like him too -- all put under the same banner, the same team, a little family of lost, do-gooder kids led by a friend just as young and fresh-faced as they were. (it had been a friend, right? he and ahri, hadn’t they been close in the old days? it hurts his head to try and remember.)
but if there’s just one good thing that ever came out of protecting the universe -- and trust him, it was the best thing that ever happened to him -- it was meeting xayah. kind of cliche to fall head over heels in love with your best friend and teammate, but he and xayah absolutely rocked the cliches! they were the “lovebirds.” sickeningly sweet and completely in-sync. he remembers that. he would never want to forget.
it still wasn’t enough to save them.
there was a lonely planet. a fight. a terrible, horrible fight -- they weren’t ready for the horrors that had laid in wait, or to confront one of the many faces of true darkness. their team was overpowered. rakan died.
there’s a funny thing about dying though. it’s said that even after your heart stops, it still takes a few moments for your senses to fade. and as rakan laid bleeding on that little lonely planet, he knew that ahri was abandoning him and xayah. she was taking their last standing teammate and running with her tail between her legs.
if it had just been him that she was leaving behind, rakan wouldn’t have blamed her. but it wasn’t just him. when ahri stepped into that portal and let it close behind her like the coward she truly was… rakan died with no pain greater than knowing that xayah was still alive.
xayah never would have left him. she stayed with him until the very end.
but there’s one other funny thing about dying. sometimes when there are forces of evil at work, dying doesn’t always stick.
when rakan next opened his eyes, the world felt different. he was an agent of zoe’s now, a thrall to the dark star. kind of ironic he was working for his own murderer, but the only thing that mattered to him now was that xayah was still with him. lost to her own rage, but not lost forever -- not if he had anything to say about it.
as the two waged war on the forces of good, rakan was able to keep his own corruption at bay. it took a lot of planning, more planning than he’d ever had to use his pretty head for in his life, but it turned out simple at the end. deliver xayah to the star guardians (in a pretty roundabout way, considering it was by trying to kill them), betray zoe, and then use his own light to purify xayah’s corruption and take it all into himself so he could explode in a fiery ball of evil doom and take zoe out with him!
it almost went perfectly. xayah was redeemed and saved, and rakan did explode in a fiery ball of evil doom. there was just one unfortunate complication he was trying to avoid. zoe didn’t die, and…neither did he.
he came back again. worse.
whatever pieces of his gentle nature he had been able to hold onto were gone now. rakan fully embraced his role as agent of chaos, harbinger of destruction, lord of all things evil. he still remembers the rage and betrayal, amplified tenfold by xayah’s darkness within him, and he’s going to use that to help him accomplish his own little personal goal: destroy the star guardians and everything they love.
powers / abilities:
VOID MAGIC: as a result of his corruption (or a “gift” from the dark star, no returns allowed), rakan is able to weave the very fabric of chaos. the exact limits of his magic are murky at best. he can open portals, summon dangerous void creatures, charm humans, and wield it like energy. it’s wild and unpredictable, sometimes not even obeying his own commands -- just like the way he likes it.
LIGHT MAGIC: unknown to even him, the potential still lurks inside him. originally bestowed upon him by the first star, this is the magic that every star guardian wields. they use light as constructs to fight the darkness, making it particularly effective against void creatures.
inherent abilities:
VOID CORRUPTION: rakan has been tainted by the dark star’s power, dimming his light and shrouding his soul. unfortunately, it’s also in the process of driving him entirely mad. the corruption is what gives him access to his void magics, but it also takes a terrible toll on his body, causing physical pain at times and transformations that…make even him uneasy. as the corruption progresses, the sickness grows deeper, and he risks eventually losing himself to a monstrous form entirely.
VASTAYAN HERITAGE: rakan is vastaya, a chimeric race of of humans from a distant star. his particular subspecies has avian characteristics, which is why he has those wonky ears, a single feathered wing, feetie talons, and a feathered tail. he can disguise most of this with magic when he so desires, but normally keeps the ears at all times. they’re great for hearing things.
BATTLEDANCING: aka, his very unique fighting style. he doesn’t use weapons, only magic and hand-to-hand combat. he’s particularly graceful and impossible to pin down in a fight.
items / weapons:
SOUL GEM: rakan’s soul/light is connected to his gem, which is currently cracked and brimming with corruption. his former team leader is still holding onto a large shard of it, but it doesn’t affect him - mostly it just annoys him.
RIKU: his familiar and tiny bestie/wingman/evil minion. riku chirps in a language comprehensible only to guardians, and as a piece of rakan’s living soul, is also jaded and corrupted at present. he’s a vain little guy, but very protective of rakan.
starting ability: very weak void magic
starting item: riku!
extra:
if you looked up babygirl in the dictionary, rakan’s picture would be right next to the entry
discord id: princeofevil.xc
