More often than no "this character is autistic" is just a lazy cliche of a fan theory, as much as "X is a Time Lord." But this is one rare case where the autism theory is warranted. Of course, with Leyden being a writer, neurodivergence is expected.
cornelius leyden from the mask of dimitrios is autistic and somehow its not just me projecting this time: a post (because i just remembered i didnt post this idea and only talked about it with a friend)
ok so im autistic and some of what leyden does reminds me of this. mostly this started when i noticed that leyden’s interest in dimitrios was called an obsession. now this word always makes me wonder “would this character be autistic?” simply because thats something that i do, its the fixation. having noticed this i began connecting other bits and decided that this actually had a basis! and as such a lot of this is from my own experiences
first id mention his search for dimitrios. he travels from country to country for information on a dead criminal, does it on a whim really. when dimitrios is first brought up to him he mentions that such things obsess him, they make him have to learn more. its very reminiscent of hyperfixation to me how he speaks about it. the way he also talks implies that this is a common thing. and he ends up going to such lengths to find out more. its so………. the need, the lengths, the obsession! its all something i can envision because its something that happens to me!
secondly i mention his lack of typical reactions. theres several times where he acts nonchalantly to things which would usually cause someone to freak out. he shrugs off peters knowing his name and acts completely casual when faced with a break in and a gun pointed at him (like he literally lays on the bed while this happens) just completely unfazed. i could probably mention him walking up to dimitrios who plans to shoot him and beginning to talk to him but im kinda chalking that part up to being shocked by the situation and not just being overly casual. also the bit where he learns dimitrios wasnt dimitrios, when given definite proof of the fact he still cant believe it for a few minutes. it reminds me of when im given an unexpected situation and just dont know what to do
also he has a habit of fiddling with things and while i do know thats peter lorre doing his scene stealing thing BUT! im talking about leyden here! in which case it resembles stimming
IN CONCLUSION. mr leydens autistic swag is off the charts (source- me, autistic)

(You probably meant PM, but reblogging is easier.)
Hans Beckert: Someone gave him a quick mercy killing shortly after his arrest, either in prison or a mental institution. Maybe a sympathetic fellow inmate, doctor or guard. Probably the old comforting-hug-and-a-gunshot/lethal injection cliche. Or drugged him into a deep sleep and then smothered him.
Joel Cairo: He and Wilmer escaped both the law and the Fat Man, and became a gay Bonnie & Clyde. The young hippies of the 60s and 70s knew them as that eccentric old gay couple who could fix you up with any kind of weed and psychedelic, and who hosted showings of John Waters movies and stuff.
Ugarte #1: The Fat Man had him smuggled out of prison, and helped fake his death--in return for a lifetime of servitude of some sort.
Ugarte #2: Strasser and Louie lied about his death. After Rick and Louie walked off from killing Strasser, Louie surprised Rick by making a stop at the prison, to retrieve a very roughed up Ugarte from solitary. Ugarte is not very happy to see them at first, making for a symphony of savage snarks throughout the next adventure.
Cornelius Leyden is gay. That may or may not be intended subtext on the movie's part. But in any case, I cannot read Leyden as being attracted to women. He's just...not. Peters may have gotten a light sentence with a defense plea, or something, and they moved in together. How they had a love life without Leyden getting smothered to death, is a secret known only to them.
Dr. Einstein and Julius O'Hara are the same guy. Both names seem like aliases. They characters' personalities seem similar enough to conceivably be the same dude 10 years apart.
Polo visited Tanya and Paul a few more times over the years. Their kids knew him as their very weird, fun uncle, who Mom always locks up valuables whenever he's around.
Marius, along with every other character in the movie, is actually speaking French with a Frech accent. The Hungarian, British and New York accent we the audience hear are just part of the translation. They actually all just have different types of French accents.
I have a new idea! Anyone wanna send me their Headcanons for Peter Lorre related media and I can give my thoughts on them and whether I agree with them?
