House of the Dead
Summary: Some friends go to an island for a rave but find that everyone there's been turned into zombies. Jürgen Prochnow's also in this.
Inconsistent stylistic choices, erratic editing, no focus, bad effects, stick figure characters. Is this what all Boll films are like?
Rating: 0.5/5

Crisscross Apricot Pi(e) Day
All about Home Baking : Cakes, Cookies, Pies, Pastries, Biscuits, Muffins, Quick Breads, Frostings, Table Service, Party Menus. 2nd ed., Consumer Service Dept., General Foods Corp., 1933. Call No. Cookery 1933 Al 2nd ed.
More for pie day from our colleague Melanie Lowrie!
"Happy Pi(e) Day! As the resident nerd in high school, Pi Day was always one of those holidays that I enjoyed reminding the rest of my classmates of, and what better way to celebrate than with one of my favorite desserts, pie! (Although, I like all desserts personally, I have a sweet tooth and will never turn down something sweet).
In my capacity as one of the Collection Services Support Specialists for Special Collections, I have been the go-to person for almost all post-cataloging activities since arriving at the Library in July 2023, meaning that I have been getting very close with new acquisitions once they arrive back from Technical Services.
One of the main collections that has been coming across my desk almost constantly since July has been additions to our Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive. In other words, I’ve been seeing a lot of cookbooks! So, when Juli McLoone sent out an email announcing the annual Pi(e) Day celebrations, I immediately knew I needed to participate. The theme being fruit pies, I challenged myself to find a recipe using a fruit not commonly found in pies at the grocery store (apple, cherry, blueberry, peach, you get the idea), and I wanted this recipe to come from a book in our collection.
Enter All about Home Baking: Cakes, Cookies, Pies, Pastries, Biscuits, Muffins, Quick Breads, Frostings, Table Service, Party Menus. The edition in our collection is the second edition created by the General Foods Corporation circa 1933. I thought this was perfect as I started leafing through the book as it seems to have been created to help the home chef learn basic skills and then build upon them with foolproof recipes. While I was searching through the section on pies, I came across the recipe for pie crust with a simple cherry filling. Well dang, I wanted to stay away from fruits you commonly find in pies in the grocery store!
Thankfully, I kept going, because on the final page of the section was the recipe for Crisscross Apricot Pie. Racking my brain, I could not pinpoint a single time in my life where I have had or even seen an apricot pie. Perfect! Thankfully this book was scanned and uploaded to Hatitrust from Cornell University’s collection, so I printed out the two pages I needed and decided to get to work...."
Crisscross Apricot Pie recipe from All About Home Baking.
While I could have used a food processor to complete this process, I felt that actually "getting my hands dirty" may be a little more fun.
Carl definitely thought the pie filling was for his dinner. He was disappointed when I said it's people food.
The completed pie.

They look like cherries,
and they don’t look like cherries 🍒 👀
‘If it's red, and pretty, and birds are eating it, it's probably poisonous for humans, so don't eat it,
…but if it's brown, and looks like poop 💩, and insects are eating it, then it's possibly safe for human consumption’, …
is what I’ve heard. How factual this is, I do not know. So, I used an app 🤳🏼
These are cornelian cherries, also known as cornels, and they are edible.
They ripen towards the end of summer and taste … 👅 TART!!! I bit into a few.
Looked up recipes, and apparently they can be used in place of lemon juice 🍋 , after being cooked.
youtube
Edible yes, but eating fruit off trees, next to busy streets, and exhaust fumes 🚗 💨 🤔 is probably not a good idea.
Still, this fruit-laden tree 🌳 is one of the most gorgeous sights I’ve seen 👀 😍🥰❤️

A Child of the 90s
I grew up in the 90s
I was a child of hippy nostalgia & corduroy jeans
I was already depressed that we were going digital
I was meant for an analog world
Only meant for the singularity of it all
I was the love child of Chris Cornell & Kurt Cobain
30 years ago will always be the 1970s to me
I started doing drugs so I wouldn’t go insane
I was a child of butterfly wishes and poems too wordy & far too long
I was happiest in the Severed Garden, under secret classrooms,
Creating friendships I’d have all my life long
I knew those days were numbered
We were a dying breed
And my desire for them once they vanished
Only magnified my need
I was a child who dwelled on stolen rooftops
And made Penn station a romantic fools dream
We would hold hands, laugh in hysterics and nick posters of ham & eggs from the local A&P
And you dragged me into the hotel and called me your wife because it had AC
New York City was such a scene
We were only sixteen
I still remember what it was like to actually write with a pen
We were wizards and masters and dreamers always
If you could take me back to any time I’d surely pick then
Despite the teenage lies and the rules and the epic heartbreak
In the 90s there was no Facebook or instagram, no platform to be fake
I was a child of the 90s
I worshipped Eddie Vedder and Gavin Rossdale’s Glycerine
I often think of Numeral Rock and my senior crush ironically called Jeremy
I cupped my cherry
My hands wreaked of smoke
But life was simpler then, before the world became woke
In the 90s, it was simple, even though we were raging inside
To feel love, to feel anything, grunge was our god
And god became suicide
I look back now on my faded jeans and doc martens well worn through
If there’s one thing that I know of life
And sometimes I’m not sure I know much that’s true
I was a child of the 90s and
I would trade all my days of laughter
For just one more second with you

I am losing my mind at the OP of this video pointing out all TV references from Classic and NuWho retroactively hinting at the Timeless Children arc then having the audacity to turn around and say in the comments that the novels, comics, and Big Finish audios are not canon.
The BBC's official stance is that the novels, comics, and Big Finish audios are just as canon as the TV series, with the only caveat being that no televised Doctor Who story can make so obscure a reference to the expanded universe that the original material has to have been experienced to make sense. In other words: "Nothing yet everything is canon." All of it.
And people out here are really wanting to cherry-pick and say "only the TV series counts as canon!!!".
Uh-huh.
If you really want to play that game:
"Night of the Doctor" has Eight reeling off a list of companions from the Big Finish audios. The audios themselves explicitly state the events of the Eighth Doctor Adventures novels & the comics are in parallel timelines + the audios even feature companions from both the novels and comics (Fitz Kreiner and Frobisher). If "Night of the Doctor" makes Big Finish canon, then by extension it makes everything else canon.
Rose mentions the planet Justicia in "Boom Town", the main location in the New Series Adventures novel The Monsters Inside.
Paul Cornell adapted his own Seventh Doctor novel Human Nature for the Tenth Doctor TV story Human Nature / The Family of Blood.
The Ninth Doctor TV story Dalek was adapted from the Big Finish audio Jubilee.
Marc Platt, who wrote the classic Big Finish audio story Spare Parts, got a writing credit for the Tenth Doctor TV story Rise of the Cybermen / The Age of Steel & Spare Parts was later a major influence on World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls. (Moffat went out of his way to avoid contradicting the events of Spare Parts, acknowledging it and every other Cybermen origin story as true.)
The Toymaker, seen in The Giggle, is originally from a lost episode that was burned in a BBC Studios fire decades ago and no longer exists. Same thing for the Great Intelligence from The Snowmen originating in a lost Second Doctor episode.
For the longest time, the only way to access certain Doctor Who episodes was through the Target novelizations. Then BBC Books acquired the rights and began publishing their own Doctor Who novels (the Past Doctor Adventures and the Eighth Doctor Adventures) after Virgin lost the rights to the New Adventures and the Doctor Who license.
The expanded universe is canon. All of it. Even the contradictory bits. And Whovians who want to cherry-pick and say only the TV series is what counts are fucking weak.

I think a good first step is to notice what edibles and natives are already incorporated into landscaping, and just ignored. Here, for example, commercial landscapers plant our native evergreen huckleberry, which has much to recommend it, both as a "landscape" plant and edible: evergreen, easy care, subtle flowers, berries that ripen long after others, native as mentioned so supporting native animal species, tasty, humans and others enjoy the fruits. Yaupon holly isn't native here, but it's still used and is non-invasive while providing caffeine and theobromine(!), evergreen, pleasantly bland looking for fitting right into whatever landscape already exists. People plant rosemary, sage, sweet bay, lavender, etc for aesthetics but they're all very tasty too, obviously. Elderberries are gorgeous, and used all the time. My city planted chestnuts, and a lot of people go and forage for them (more so during bad economic times, but still). Also things that are food crops, but don't look like food crops: sunchokes, a species of daylily, camas, rhubarb, artichokes, cardoon, native strawberries, etc. Asparagus is a really neat looking plant. Scarlet runner beans are beautiful, and attract hummingbirds, while also making beans. Snow peas are also very pretty vines.
For vacant/neglected land, it's great to learn what invasives, weeds, and tough & abundant natives are edible. Giant knotweed, Himalayan blackberries, yarrow, etc fill-in-your-plants-here. Also it's great to go around pulling out invasive species because people will just think you're a really committed environmentalist, and you can harvest other edibles while you're at it. Be doubly sure about the land history though, don't want to unknowingly be picking from a superfund site! And for goodness sake, be sure of your ID! I've seen people mistake Oregon grape (native) for English holly (invasive) before, and you don't want to be that person.
With tubers/roots especially, you need to know the history of your soil and/or get a soil test for heavy metals. There are ways of improving polluted soil, and certain plants/parts of plants have less or no contamination. Cornell has a pdf available for free titled "Soil Contaminants and Best Practices for Healthy Gardens" which has a lot of good information, please do read it if you're gardening or foraging in urban areas.
From experience, landlords often have no clue and don't care if things are grown in pots/incorporated into existing landscaping. A big pot with Swiss chard, lettuce, kale, etc can look pretty aesthetic. Apartment complex often have edible invasives and/or the above mentioned edible and/or native plants- and nobody picks them.
You can also learn to graft, and graft fruit bearing varieties onto existing ornamental varieties- crab apples, pears, cherries, plums, etc.
A lot of people just straight up ignore plants, and a lot of people have no clue what food looks like if it's not in a store or restaurant. Use this to your advantage. I have seen landscapers look at a plant that clearly doesn't belong (invasive spurge laurel, for example, which is neither a surge nor a laurel), or is growing up through another (hazelnut through a rhody), and just completely ignore it, watering, fertilizing, and pruning them just like the rest. The ones most likely to do this are the ones that "prune" everything to be a cube or sphere though, so keep that in mind. What can still produce food when whacked into a cube? A few things. Also, look for the edges and backs, and places where the landscapers let things slide a little because they figure the clients won't ever look there.
Another big thing that gets ignored is that a single fruit tree often provides much more fruit than a small family will reasonably eat, and often a tree was planted literally decades ago and the current residents don't care about it's fruit. I've gotten loads of figs, apples, pears, grapes, etc just by asking- or by offering to make them a fruit crumble from their fruit tree if they let me pick as much as I want. Back alleys get invaded by out of control raspberries, blackberries, walnuts, etc.
@guerrilla gardeners, solarpunks and plantarchists of all stripes we need to make a good guide to growing food stealthy style
i'm talking growing in rental properties without alerting the landlord, growing on vacant/unused land, stuff like that
