In a server discussion about Cores (J's core especially) and ghost-powers, I got inspired:

Jason's most important memories and self are related to his tech/fix-up abilities (stilling the bat wheels, hit by a crowbar, etc).

I present to you - Jason's technocore.

But that's just about his powers, isn't it?

There's something to say about Jason building his helmet, over and over again. About his symbol being an artifact of protection.

About rebuilding himself, over and over.

About spending hours with magnified glass and burnt fingers, trying to get to the right point. To make it strong as possible.

Something to say about dedicating yourself to a purpose, to a symbol, spending blood, sweat and tears.

A promise: I won't be hurt again

(I won't let them hurt you).

Just think about young J, looking for SOMETHING to do during his training. Something to fill that void, that ache he can't reach. Think about him making his own core from scratch and tears and broken hopes.

While also standing in front of dead bodies.#While I'm here - Let's clear something up: WWX does a *lot* of torturing and killing in this scene.#If JC is to be credited for any tortures let it be known he did that right alongside WWX. They get co-torture credits here.#Your favourite character is responsible for several horrible tortures and murders.#Was it justified? Honestly I don't think so. I think it very much needs to be over-the-top-violent to show how WWX has changed.#It was excessive force to satiate his need for revenge. WWX is consistently demonstrating how he feels justified in his actions #Up until now they have been for relatively noble causes. I hear a lot of talk about how Hollywood isn't comfortable with showing romantic relationships, interracial or otherwise, without a white person involved. But I'm not sure that fans are actually comfortable with that either? And I don't think they're comfortable without a significant white (white male specifically) presence in their favorite genre shows.

Ideas and feedback welcome.#The core idea behind this AU is that LWJ goes to study with the Yunmeng Jiang sect instead of JC and WWX going to Cloud Recess #But why? Well I imagine Lan Xichen set it up to give LWJ a challenge (more social than skill based) and LWJ rose to it (begrudgingly)#Sort of a 'You've mastered so many Lan techniques but Other Sects have styles that are worth learning.' set up.#Lan Qiren agrees mostly on the basis that...well it's LWJ. Yunmeng Jiang is unruly but LWJ is beyond that riff-raff. He'll rise above it.#This is the story of a boy who thrives on routine and rules spending time in a place that is his apparent antithesis.#Also it is so warm there. I’ve gone on and on about how Leo wants to be who Splinter finds is the ideal person (which just so happens to be Splinter’s ideal version of himself) but I have yet to really touch upon how Donnie is the one who most directly parallels Splinter himself to an honestly shocking degree, Raph’s taking from Splinter’s teachings and parenting has resulted in an unhealthy mixup in the different dynamics of a family versus a team, and Mikey is the one who is simultaneously the most focused on family and the most intrinsically himself which both leads to his better grasp of mystics and honestly what just might be the healthiest dynamic with Splinter.

The fact that Usopp seems to have several hobbies and/or talents—drawing, sculpting(?) tinkering/building/inventing, chemistry, I suppose shooting can be counted—tells me as a character he's very uncertain of his future and tbh the fact he had to sit down and learn all these skills himself makes me wanna cry. Especially the fact that he's good enough with tools to make a multi use weapon for Nami and repair Merry enough to make her last as far as she did.

And side note: Usopp's lying being a coping mechanism is insanely so so good. Because his dad left at a young age. An age he presumably wouldn't have understood why. He was probably told he wasn't going to come back and that's when his brain told him to start making up stories, to start lying. That maybe if he lied to others enough he would believe them too. And maybe, just maybe, those lies could come true.

Many of the Straw Hats were hurt and damaged in their most formative years of childhood. I'd argue that Nami, Sanji, and Usopp were hurt the most because of the abuse and lack of support. But still, Nami had the whole village and her sister secretly rooting her on. Sanji had his mom, his sister, and eventually Zeff. Usopp—he didn't have anyone probably until his early or mid teens and even then he was the one providing the support. To the Usopp Pirates, to Kaya, all the support was for them, not him. He was openly ridiculed his whole life as the boy who cried wolf and it's obvious how that impacted his mental health.

Anyway that was my love letter to Usopp (⁠◕⁠ᴗ⁠◕⁠✿⁠)

#i like that opla had him employed by kaya's family company #but no where did it imply he was taken in by someone after his mom passed just like the original source #so i guess a core part of usopp's character is loneliness and a misfit childhood #in every iteration its as tho usopp is just that lonely orphan raising himself learning all these hobbies #and life skills just to survive and cope #one piece #usopp
