Weekend With the Grays, The Winter Solstice

5th of December- The Welcome Ball III

Cordelia was proud of the dress she had made. She had always made most of her own clothes but recently she had really delved into it, finding a passion in designing and making gowns. She didn't even feel too self-conscious about mingling with all of the incredibly beautifully dressed lords and ladies that filled the ball room.

The Capp vineyard mansion swamped little Gavin, so Tybalt kicked his big brother sense of duty into another gear.

In the first row of vines they walked through together, Tybalt explained the family business in the simplest of terms: growing grapes to turn into wine. Gavin, wide-eyed, asking what wine tasted like. Tybalt proudly proclaimed their Capulet wine as full-bodied with notes of mahogany, but stopped his assessment short when he realised Gavin only remained wide-eyed with more questions. Having only reached the second row of vines, Tybalt deployed a different activity suggestion.

"You know, the pool has been heated. How about a swim?"

Gavin looked like Tybalt had just offered him a gold bar. "Really?"

"Yes! Race you back."

Oh, the delight in having a younger sibling who appreciated his efforts! Tybalt felt blessed for the rest of the day - that was, until Gavin went to bed early and Tybalt's Beef Wellington caught on fire. Thankfully, the firefighters were swift, but the event had Cordelia leaning up against the archway in the aftermath, delivering shivering breaths. Tybalt, in a fugue of needing to do something, stripped off his smoke-singed layers and sponge bathed at the kitchen sink.

Oh... the crashing guilt of causing one's mother to feel afraid.

Oct 1: Introduce your Hero of Ferelden

Cordelia Cousland, second child on Teyrn Bryce Cousland and Teyrna Eleanor Cousland, loved her life in Highever.

Super long post under the cut

Cordelia was a little bit spoiled, used to getting her own way and taking risks knowing she could get away with it. She knew what to say to get out of trouble, so she frequently took advantage of that and got into trouble. She would travel where she liked with whom she liked and had a little bit of a reputation as a tease.

Family and Friends

She adored her older brother, Fergus, who encouraged her shenanigans even though he couldn't get away with as much, and he covered for her on several occasions. When Oriana joined the household, she and Cordelia didn't get along, but when Eleanor started talking about Cordelia finding a husband, Oriana was there to commiserate. Cordelia also showed Oriana that she didn't have to be perfect 100% of the time, and eventually, their dislike turned to respect which turned into friendship. When Oren was born, Cordelia immediately adored her nephew. She taught him how to sneak around the castle and steal treats from the larder and let him ride on her mabari, Barkspawn. She would also have taught him how to use a dagger, but Fergus asked her to wait until he was older.

Cordelia was definitely more of a daddy's girl, but she had a closer relationship with her mother. Bryce would forgive any transgression she made, more proud of her resourcefulness than upset that she did something wrong. Eleanor, while more at odds with Cordelia, spent a great deal of time with her, excited to have a daughter, and taught her all the necessary skills to be a lady: command, archery, and resource management.

She had a little bit of a crush on Ser Gilmore, and tried to seduce him a few times, but he always turned her down. He wasn't like the men and boys she could play around with; he was kind and he seemed to value her. He always seemed to know when she was up to something and was the only person who would reproach her about it. She honestly believed that, if she were allowed to marry as she pleased, she would eventually marry Gilmore and they would live on his family's bannorn together.

Events of the Prologue

When Duncan expressed interest in recruiting her, Cordelia would be lying if she said she never thought about it, but she would rather have continued on her current path: play around until she eventually found love and married a nobleman (Ser Gilmore PLEASE), manage and defend their lands, and maintain her quality of life. She had complete faith that her father, brother, and Arl Howe, with the rest of the Ferelden forces, would handle the Blight in the south and return soon enough.

Arl Howe's betrayal came as a complete shock. Cordelia watched as her entire world collapsed around her. Finding Oriana and Oren filled her with so much rage and despair that her soul was forever changed. Ser Gilmore's sacrifice to hold the main doors shattered the dreams she had of her future. When her parents stayed behind so she and Duncan could escape, that rage became a promise: Cordelia would be the one to take the light out of Rendon Howe's eyes. She had nothing left to live for, except to get revenge and find her brother.

The Blight

With a blank, uncertain future and no family to anchor her, Cordelia joined the Grey Wardens as her father had promised Duncan. She might as well excel at it. When Loghain abandoned Cailan and Cordelia saw her first battle against the darkspawn, she understood the importance of the Grey Wardens and found a new purpose - stopping the Blight and exacting justice on Ferelden's corrupt nobility.

While gathering allies and recruiting followers to help end the Blight, Cordelia never forgot her promise to kill Rendon Howe. She learned that Howe was working closely with Loghain, pushing the regent to lower depths than she had thought the Hero of River Dane capable. That most of Loghain's worst crimes were Howe's ideas did not excuse him, but it did whet Cordelia's hatred of Arl Howe to a fine point. When she finally confronted Howe in his estate, Alistair helped disable him so Cordelia could land the final blow. As she twisted the dagger in his chest, she whispered in his ear, "A Cousland always does their duty."

As she and Alistair worked together, they developed a close friendship, bound by their shared sense of loss and duty. Over time, Cordelia's sharp wit and Alistair's corny jokes deepened that bond and they fell in love. Underneath his insecurity and reluctance to lead, Cordelia could see that Alistair was a truly noble man. When she learned of his parentage, she was torn. Alistair obviously wanted nothing to do with the crown, and Cordelia was fairly certain she wanted Alistair to be in her future and she didn't want that much responsibility. But she knew Alistair would be a great king, and she knew Ferelden needed that more than she wanted to be unbound. When the time came to confront Loghain and decide Ferelden's political future, Cordelia worked to put Alistair on the throne with herself beside him.

When faced with the final battle and the revelation that a Grey Warden had to die to kill the archdemon, Cordelia immediately agreed to Morrigan's ritual, not willing to lose anyone else. What none of them realized was that Cordelia was already pregnant, and the ritual Morrigan performed actually attracted Urthemiel's soul into Cordelia's child. But that's a different story.

Hello Powder!

I have been a long time follower of Hellfire and Ice. I seen you reblog a couple post with camila mendes and a couple characters she plays and say it was lacey coded soooo i recently finished derry girls and watched Do Revenge recently and wanted to know if you also grabbed inspiration from camila mendes character in that movie for lacey because it really reminds me of her lol or who else inspires you for character building love your writing :) <3

do revenge was 100% a seed for HAI I feel. like even prior to developing Lacy into an OC that was definitely one of the inciting pieces of media that made me interested in this story because I love when girls just do be fucking losing it.

but Lacy sure does have a deep well of bitches that I draw inspiration from including but not limited to Becky Sharp, Shiv Roy (oh BROTHER the father wound), Laura Palmer, Blair Waldorf, Cordelia Chase, Kathryn Merteuil, India Stoker, Franny Glass, Boyd Crowder, Alice Morgan from Luther and a more recent addition in Tashi Duncan from Challengers especially when it comes to being fatally knocked out of the game you’ve been so good at playing. the music of Fiona Apple also plays a HUGE part in her characterisation bc she’s so fuckin still waters run deep lmao

I also look at films like Black Swan and The Red Shoes a lot as a study on perfection via performance and how that can be fatal to especially a young woman, I also think a lot about big fish/small pond syndrome bc ultimately Lacy is from a small town that she believes she’s outgrown since birth but realistically she will leave Hawkins for a Real City and run headfirst into a brick wall and get herself into some trouble because she falls crack over ass for the first (and worst) person to make her feel special again

I love her so much she is my precious baby princess but she is also the devil incarnate and the shrewdest little career criminal in the making she needs to be imprisoned she needs to win a Pulitzer but also she maybe just needs a chai latte x

"That's Princess Tyrell," Arlan grunted, jerked his head subtly towards the end of the hall.

Dunk couldn't resist the urge and peered down the hall with wide eyes and bit back a gasp. He had seen the Targaryens a few times in their litters and there were more than a hundred dragonseeds teaming around town, but she was more beautiful than all somehow.

Maybe it was because she was clean, but Princess Tyrell was put together in a way only prized whores could be with their rich patrons decorating them to show their preference. She was also more, violet eyes searching and unearthly as walks towards them, her young son and heir, little Lord Daven and his elder sister, Lady Cordelia followed her as she approached...them.

Why was she approaching them? Dunk could feel a flustered flush creep up his face at being before the Princess, him a son of someone who is likely a criminal speaking to a princess? What a jape! Surely, she'd speak to Ser Arlan and ignore Dunk entirely!

"Ser Arlan Pennytree." the princess greeted. "Your brother is well after the wound he took in the battle, nasty business, I'm afraid."

"Yes, quite awful." Ser Arlan agreed. He shoved Dunk foward an, andd he tried not to squeak in fright as he met the gaze of the princess. Hurriedly, he dropped his head and bowed deeply.

"Princess!" he cried.

A soft tinkling laughter. "Be at peace, little squire. You come from King's Landing, do you not? So do I, can't say I miss the smell of shit, but the smell of roses is hardly better."

Duncan stared up at the princess with wide eyes and stayed silent. The princess exchanged a goodbye with Ser Arlan and in a flurry of skirts escorted her children, both with hair the color of roasted chestnuts away.

Yeah.

I am...struggling to defend Cordelia here, but this is actually an important character point for her - the moment when it really hits her just how much of herself she’s carved away over the years in the effort to make herself into someone who could survive the Circle.

Like- Cordelia is a spirit healer. That is how she was trained, that’s the magic she’s good at. And she was good at it, in the beginning, because she was compassionate, because she couldn’t bear to turn away from people in harm. She thought it got harder over the years because everything was getting harder, she was learning more advanced things, or because it seemed to take so much of her effort just to keep upright so much of the time. She didn’t realise until now, reeling from the realisation that she betrayed her best friend to save her own neck and it wouldn’t even have worked if not for Duncan, just how much of a shell of herself she had become, to the point where the little girl who used to talk to spirits in her dreams slaughtered a Spirit of Valour because she was so paranoid that it was a trap that she couldn’t trust aid when it was offered, and the girl who used to heal her dorm-mates’ scrapes and childhood injuries for practice is turning aside from an injured man because she wasn’t specifically ordered to heal him, and she’s so thoroughly internalised the idea that healing people the Templars don’t want healed will end in punishment. 

If betraying Jowan was the start of this, this is what really cements in her the idea that...she cannot go on as she had been, living just for the sake of avoiding trouble, no matter the cost to herself or anyone around her. And Alistair was the one who brought her to that realisation which, coupled with his Chantry-critical statements when she started asking about the Blights, is enough to earn him a little bit of her respect, and even the beginnings of trust.

(Note: I decided to make Cordelia the same age as Primrose for this, since I think it's easier for me to work with!)

Cordelia had never been to a grander house than Winbourne. She took in the beautiful gardens and ornate architecture as she joined the queue to greet the host and hostess. She felt rather overwhelmed, as she came face to face with Primrose Gray. Sure, she had gone to Hogwarts with her, but they hadn't been all that close, being in different houses and running in different circles, too. The company Cordelia usually kept was not made of lords and ladies, but she couldn't deny that that was exactly what she had been aiming towards all her life.

"Lady Gray," she greeted the lady of the house when her turn came and then: "Lord Stolberg-Burke. Thank you for your kind invitation."

"Miss Duncan, welcome to Winbourne," Primrose said with a beautiful and dazzling smile. To Cordelia, she felt regal, as did her tall, handsome husband Lord Malcolm Stolberg-Burke.

"Welcome," said Lord Stolberg-Burke, echoing Primrose's words.

Greetings exchanged, it was time to move along, and Cordelia was searching the crowd for familiar faces...

Cordelia's reforging bonds with her children, and her cat.

Hermia was always an avid reader and Cordelia is pleased to see this has continued into her teens. They happily take to the library in quiet companionship, immersed in separate worlds on the same couch. Truthfully, those worlds are currently non-fiction; Hermia is studying towards a mechanical engineering scholarship, and Cordelia is reading about what to do in a fire. But a good book is a good book, and when Duncan deigns to curl up between them and accept pats, it's the best part of the day.

Then there's Tybalt. He cites a lack of creature comforts in his campus lodgings as a reason for visiting, but Cordelia knows he's really keeping an eye on his girls. It's what Capp men are born to do.

Juliette evades surveillance by only meeting up with Romeo in the small hours. She recently asked him to be her official boyfriend and he said yes! Maybe she can finally prove to her family that it's true love. Being the Capp heiress who united the families would surely go down in history...

The next morning, Cordelia is a little dismayed that Juliette and Hermia attended her ladies' breakfast in their pyjamas, but Stella Roth one-ups them both by taking her seat straight from the hot tub, still in her bathers. She then appalls fellow guest Rosalind Capp by falling asleep in her toast. Cordelia attempts damage control by joking that red wine and hot tubs don't mix, but deep down she concedes that city women are sorely lacking in decorum..!
