Here's a bit of a 2 for the price of 1 with Jackie headcanons. I head canon that he's autistic, and also that his favorite animals are frogs. As such, he has copied a lot of their mannerisms. He often sits crouched like a frog, likes to stick his tongue out, that kinda stuff. Froggy stims!

9. I think Maya definitely ended up arguing with Xavier over Omar, probably more than once. I think Xavier, at least at one point, actually did feel a little guilty for pushing Omar away. That means that the arguments that Maya and Xavier used to get into over whose fault it was that Omar became the next Green Poncho got really heated. Neither wanted to take any blame. Eventually, I think Xavier got over it but Maya did not, so he took the blame and didn't care. It didn't make Maya feel any better about it, though.

Total Drama headcannons cause I've kept these thoughts for too long (mostly Cody lol)

Cody, Noah, and Gwen had an emo phase, Cody wasn't allowed to dress emo so he only participated in the internet culture, Noah was unfortunately enough to have supportive parents so there are at least 100 pictures of Emo Noah in the photo albums (his sisters make fun of him for that) and Gwen insist she left that phase in middle school (she didn't. Once an emo, always an emo). They jump out of their skin when they hear MCR or BOTDF (earlier 2000s with unlimited internet access...)

Cody always wanted a pet dog when he was younger but his parents always said no because 1. They're too dirty, 2. They didn't think Cody could take care of one nor did they have the time themselves to take care of it. 3. They don't like animals and love seeing Cody suffer. 4. they probably think cats are better lol. Anyways because Cody would never shut up they caved and settled on getting him a hamster, a fat, chubby, hamster that looked like it was a month away from dying and Cody loved that thing to death. He would always get the hamster the best things it needs and take care of it properly. It lived for like 3 years much to the surprise of Cody's parents. Well, when it did die today Cody was devasted to an understatement. He had a funeral for the hamster in the bathroom and tried to flush him down the toilet like you would a fish. Only the hamster just clogged the toilet making water go everywhere and Cody crying more. His parents were def PISSED and after that, he wasn't allowed any more pets (all of this happened in the 4th grade til the 6th).

Cody is almost a carbon copy of his mother (Only because I am too)

Cody has one aunt on his mom's side and three cousins, two boys and one girl. The oldest (3 years older than Cody), Logan, typically likes to tease Cody (which he hates). The second oldest (older than Cody by 2 years), Jamie, is much nicer but that's not saying much really. Though Cody was stuck with getting Jamie's hand-me-downs because they were both the same size and Logan's stuff was too big for Cody. One of the reasons why Cody was bullied so much in school. The last and youngest (15 years younger than Cody), Cody. His aunt basically forgot her nephew existed and named her son Cody and she really liked the name so she didn't want to get the name change. So whenever they're in a room together they're referred to as Cody 1 and Cody 2 (Our Cody is Cody 2 even though it was his name first, lol).

Gwen often had to babysit her younger brother (forgot his name) a lot because her mom had to work two jobs since their father left them both at a super young age (Gwen 6 and her brother 2). She usually tries to help her mom out any way she can with chores, jobs, and looking after her brother. She says the reason why she joined Total Drama was cause her brother dared her to. While that is somewhat true the main reason was actually to give the money to their mom and hopefully make them financially stable. She was definitely disappointed to get second but her mom was proud anyway.

Harold is definitely NOT an anime kid. He actually HATES weeaboos and doxxes the really weird ones that are kinda racist and fetishize Asian people. He enjoys the anime content as he enjoys a lot of Japanese culture but he isn't going down the halls of Naurto running.

Heather's parents bought her an apartment when she turned 18 just so she's out of the house cause they deadass don't want her there they pay for her bills and groceries and all that stuff. It did hurt at first but hey, free water bill!

Trent awoken the bi mess Cody is.

Cody can actually cook somewhat. Only really simple foods that he learned in the cooking class. He only bothered to learn cooking because his parents are barely there and Cody was getting sick of pizza and takeout every other night.

Noah, Cody, and Gwen are the bi trio we need (PLS I BEG I NEED THEM IN THE SAME ROOM BEATING THE SHIT OUT OF EACH OTHER OR SOMETHING).

Noah's parents wanted all girls and lots of them, that's why there are like 8 or 9 of them. When they were pregnant they just assumed Noah was going to be a girl and didn't bother with finding out the gender and such. They were very surprised to find out he was a boy. So all his baby pictures are of him in pink girl clothes and a pink nursery. But they still love him just as much as his sisters.

Geoff had a rat tail, luckily Bridgette was able to convince him to cut it off (the only other person who liked it was Brody).

Duncan watched My Little Pony when he was 6. He always said Rainbow Dash was his favorite but it was actually Fluttershy because Duncan has a soft spot for animals.

Courtney hates kids and having to look after them while Gwen loves kids and loves watching them.

Heather's only friends are Cody and Harold (and sometimes Gwen and Leshawna but it's off and on).

Animals are naturally drawn to Cody, even Noah's dog likes Cody more than him (much to his dismay). Cody has never met an animal that hated him (besides bears...)

Cody is terrified of bears.

For some odd reason, Alejandro doesn't like Cody that much but only plays nice for Heather (he wants that twink obliterated) Cody fully knows this and he says he'll "tattle" on him for something dumb he did and Alejandro almost shits his pants each time (Cody doesn't even end up telling).

A FINDING NEMO Memory or Two

FINDING NEMO was one of the first films I actually really anticipated a long while before its release.

As a kid, I would often start anticipating movies once I saw a trailer in theaters during one of my frequent movie theater visits, and then that would be it. Whenever I was on the Internet, I wasn't frequenting movie news sites or anything like that. If anything, the release of FINDING NEMO had me going on those sites more often to see what was coming. What the news was...

I first saw concept art for FINDING NEMO in a DK-published hardcover book called DISNEY: THE ULTIMATE VISUAL GUIDE. I had gotten it as a birthday gift in October 2002. I was immersed into that book, a chronological tour through Disney feature film and even park history, throwing in television stuff as well. The page spreads so inviting, and so many great images and stills from the movies, made for really well put-together arrangements. My well worn-out copy is still with me.

The final page spread detailed movies then slated for 2003 and 2004... Only concept art for FINDING NEMO appeared, no stills from the actual movie. The images depicted were Nemo peaking out from behind a coral, Marlin and Dory looking at Sydney Opera House, and a long stretch of Nemo inside the dentist office fish tank. These images completely engrossed me. Just this colorful fish movie, incoming: I always had a thing for the underwater world anyways, between the many animal books I had as a kid to the nature documentaries I'd often see on like Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and such. I was taken to two big aquariums in home state every year or so, and was always fascinated and mesmerized by all those tanks, all that aquatic life. I had PC games about it, and there was also - semi-related - that Titanic phase I went through... The ocean, the sea, it's all very neat.

(As an add-on, the other movies on that page spread were PIGLET'S BIG MOVIE, THE JUNGLE BOOK 2, HOME ON THE RANGE, and BROTHER BEAR back when it was called "BEARS".)

Then, I got MONSTERS, INC. on DVD for Christmas... And when I saw that a teaser trailer for the movie was ON THERE?? I watched it over and over, along with just about everything else on that 2-disc DVD set...

I was all about FINDING NEMO, and I caught it on opening weekend... and loved it so much, I saw it two more times in theaters, which is something I rarely got to do as a kid back in the day. Then I was somehow able to rent it the Friday before its Tuesday DVD release. Rented it, over and over, til I got the DVD and VHS for Christmas. At the time, I didn't have a DVD player in my room, it was only in the family room and my mum's room... So the VHS sufficed, despite no bonus features! In early 2004, after winning a $200 gift card to Circuit City (lol, remember that? No? You might be a young'un reading this!) from a spelling bee, I bought an extension for my Xbox - which I also got for Christmas - that allowed me to play DVDs in my room. Yes, we kids/preteens of the early 2000s had it rough, haha.

On a personal note, this movie came out when my life was in a weird flux, and I was in a part of growing older that didn't go so smoothly. Not to divulge too much, but when you're autistic, neurodivergent, and you're coming of age in the early aughts... Not the nicest time, for sure... Yeah, things weren't easy... And at the end of the year, when the movie was finally out on DVD, I was going through a very big family loss. My first one, really... So, I really gotta hand it to FINDING NEMO for being one of the things that really helped get me through all of it... Just keep swimming, indeed...

Similarly, director Andrew Stanton's sophomore Pixar effort, WALL-E, got me through another tough time in my younger days...

I would say FINDING NEMO and MONSTERS, INC. made me fall in love with the work coming out of Pixar, especially in those early days when it was the movies being made exclusively by the Lasseter circle. As a little kid, I wasn't really that much into the TOY STORY movies, but I did like A BUG'S LIFE and played the PlayStation game quite a bit. MONSTERS, INC. I remember being a blur in the theaters for other reasons... But I asked for MONSTERS, INC. on video the year after because I did remember enjoying the door vault chase, so that was enough to make me want the disc and to watch it again. I got the DVD that Christmas, and as said earlier, I think the combination of that film, the FINDING NEMO teaser and the NEMO concept art in the DISNEY: THE ULTIMATE VISUAL GUIDE book turned me into a cultist for the Luxo lamp in December 2002, haha.

Then I went back to TOY STORY and TOY STORY 2, which I had on VHS, and gave those a proper re-watch. Now that I was 10, knew what computer animation was and how it was made, and having more of an appreciation for the way visual stories were told than I did at - say - age 6 or even 8... And I fell in love with both. Then I rented A BUG'S LIFE over and over until I was able to buy the DVD... I wanna say it was sometime in 2003, maybe early 2004, but it was the "Collector's" set DVD that promoted FINDING NEMO with a giant sticker on the shiny slipcover. Hell, if I remember correctly, I bought it at a Suncoast Motion Picture Company outlet in a mall... Back when there were more than... 4 of those across the country!

And then some 9 years later, I went and saw the 3D re-release... Surprisingly, for a movie made in 2003, it was converted wonderfully to 3D. The 3D actually added a very subtle but very immersive depth of field to many of the underwater scenes, it looked fantastic. So yes, I saw FINDING NEMO four times in theaters. I'd probably see it a fifth if it gets re-released for whatever reason, again.

It's a favorite of mine.

I finally finished the bloom into you spin off LNs about Saeki Sayaka (1st i read yesterday and 2 & 3 i read today)! I put my thoughts under a read more, i just copy/pasted from my infodumping in a discord lol so some of the things werent expanded on in full since i didnt wanna write an essay... well a longer essay about my thoughts and didnt wanna outright spoil too much in case others ended up wanting to go along that journey

It was really bittersweet in the 1st and 2nd, 1st one being her younger and her first experiences with love/affection (fuck her senpai from junior high we all hate her in this house) and the 2nd was about Touko (one of the main girls from the manga who she has big unrequited love with and such) so we all know from the manga how they are and end but it still was really interesting getting her perspective (and the author did a very brief like overview of some of the manga story beats and then bulk of it was their time as 1st years when she first fell for touko and got to know her).

3rd one? Amazing. Maybe cause im such a sap and hopeless romantic that i loved the one she ends up happy and in a relationship, but it was really nice. Seeing her change and grow through all 3 novels (and by extension from the manga too) was really fulfilling, and she ends up being decent friends with Yuu (touko's love interest from the manga) despite Yuu kinda "stealing" touko from her in a sense (its a bit more nuanced than that but thats like the most basic of vibes to it). It does make me yearn for more about where the characters end up after it all, but even LN 3 gave us a bit if post manga story for a few different characters than Sayaka which was really nice (im a slice of life slut okay give me more of them being happy in love as adults living together in each of the relationships). It also makes me sad that the anime never finished the full story, i think it came out when the manga was still ongoing, but deep in my heart i hope it ends up getting the chance to come back and at least finish the mangas story.

last book you read: Goodnight Pun Pun by Inio Asano (manga) I've read the whole series before years ago but I'm slowly collecting the physical copies of it. last book you enjoyed reading: I love Goodnight Pun Pun but since that's technically a manga I’ll do a diff one, I really liked reading Lovely Dark and Deep by Amy Mcnamara. It's about a girl that's really depressed after a significant loss and goes to live with her artist dad in a remote area of Maine.

last book you hated reading: Little Weirds by Jenny Slate. There's some good moments in there that shine but I feel like the rest of the book is trying really hard to be quirky/weird and indie and it doesn't come off as genuine at all.

bonus! favourite thing to cook/bake: since I got sick I haven't been baking or cooking much but it used to be making pies. I purchased a copy of the new post-Frozen 2 book, “Elsa and the Enchanted Forest” (a.k.a, “Olaf’s Unicorn” in French). It cracks me up that Elsa is that much more marketable in Japan that they had to completely change the title when ”Olaf’s Unicorn” makes much more sense for this story, lol...but I digress. For a book aimed at very little kids, it’s actually a pretty cute story, plus it has a ton of original and gorgeous illustrations! It’s also the first post-movie book to focus on Elsa in the forest rather than Anna and co. in Arendelle, which is a nice change (though it doesn’t provide much lore-wise, not that I expect it to, lol). Of course I love seeing all of Frohana together, but there’s something wholesome about Elsa, Olaf, and Sven frolicking around in the pretty forest. I think this is the first Frozen story that’s only focused on them, which is kind of refreshing.

I decided to spoil you guys by providing both HD scans AND a full translation ;) The book is actually quite small (literally the size of a CD case. I almost thought that’s what it was when I opened the package!) and is bound in a way that makes it easy to scan. Plus, it’s obviously aimed at very young children, even younger than the previous books I scanned, and thus is written in very easy Japanese. This made it quick to translate - I only had to look up a few words! (I majored in Japanese in college, but I have gotten a little rusty over the years).

The unicorn is a gallant creature with a horn on its forehead. The moment Olaf first heard about this legendary creature, he was smitten. "Hey, Sven. Don't you want to meet a unicorn?"

"But where is it? If I were a unicorn, where would I live…? I know, an enchanted forest! Let's go, Sven!" Elsa suddenly appeared, delighting Olaf and Sven. Then she said after hearing their story, "I'll help you search for the unicorn."

-I know there’s only been a few post-movie books/comics that show the forest, but so far, not even a cameo of the Northuldra. It’s like it’s only Elsa, the spirits, and reindeer/other animals that live there. The Northuldra wouldn’t fit with this story in particular, but still...I have to wonder if the authors of these stories simply have no need or desire to show them in these relatively few stories, or if it’s a specific restriction by heads at Disney.

Alright, let's go! Naturally, Olaf led the way. The three of them passed in front of the earth spirits: the earth giants. Olaf's eyes sparkled. "I have an idea!" The earth giants listened to Olaf's request and let everyone ride in their large palms. Then they lifted them slowly…

Higher! Higher! They were able to look far over the forest. "Look! That cloud looks like a unicorn!" Unfortunately, they weren't able to find a real unicorn.

When the three of them descended the cliffs, a stream of leaves whooshed…it was the wind spirit, Gale. Gale entwined the sticks on Olaf's head into one, creating a horn. Elsa smiled. "Gale wants to join us!" Everyone ran off with Gale.

When they left the forest, there was a sunny field. Olaf instinctively lowered his voice. "I feel like it's here. It was in the book. Unicorns love flowers and insects!" It looked like there was someone over in the shaking grass. Olaf carefully took a peek…

It was Bruni, the fire spirit. Bruni joined their group and immediately made a big discovery. He found someone's footprints! "Bruni, these are definitely unicorn footprints!" Olaf and the others quickly followed the footprints…

-I’m not the biggest Bruni fan, but he looks freakin’ adorable in that picture on the left!

Sven was there. He left the others so he could eat some grass because he was hungry. At that moment, Olaf had another good idea. "Hey, if we were together with a unicorn, the real unicorn would feel safe and come out, right?" Elsa giggled and used her magic to put a horn of ice on Sven's forehead.

Something caught Olaf's eye while walking together with Sven (who was looking like a unicorn) besides a large river. A horse was reflected in the water. On its forehead, was a single horn! But when he turned around, it was the water spirit, Nokk. The thing that looked like a horn was the branch of a tree behind him.

Olaf let out a sigh and Elsa said happily, "Let's go to the Dark Sea!" Nokk and Sven ran off like the wind. Olaf regained his cheerfulness. "Everyone, thank you for your help. We weren't able to find a unicorn, but I…" At that moment, Elsa shouted, "Olaf, look!"

When he turned to look…Is that a bright, shining horn approaching! He was impressed when he saw it do a big jump. "Wow, a narwhal! Hey, did you know? Narwhals are called the 'unicorns of the sea.' Isn't that great? We were able to meet a unicorn!"

-Rare image of Nokk smiling #2 :) Also my Frozen theorist brain says that the Dark Sea was constantly raging in order to keep Ahtohallan hidden, but it’s calm now because a fifth spirit is currently protecting Ahtohallan instead. Hence, animals like the narwhal can now swim in it.

That night, Anna and Kristoff were thoroughly surprised by Olaf's adventure tale of finding a legendary creature. As for Sven, who had been continuously running around all day…half of it was already a dream.

Vivian; first wolf I got on my island and I love her? She's a little vain but her design is gr8 and the snooty villagers are still pretty sweet in ACNH. Big improvements over past games lol.

2. scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)

Poppy; I will get cuteness aggression for pretty much any ACNH character but the little fall themed squirrel? I would kill for her 💀

3. scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)

Bam; he's a funky little deer! Love his colors and love how the jocks just. Are. Such good vibes. Meatheads with hearts of gold and the second I find him I'm moving him in lol.

4. glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)

Blanche; I'm not entirely sure what even constitutes obscure in animal crossing because there are so many little critters, but I bet as long as they're not one of the ones people go rabid for it counts as an obscure fav lol. Anyway she's another fun snooty character whose house I really loved and it had fit so well on my island before she moved away. But that's OK she eventually made room for another wolf 🤣

5. poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)

Redd. He's an awful little fox WHO WONT GIVE ME THE LAST 5 PIECES OF ART I NEED, THE LITTLE BASTARD, but he's pretty pathetic and I subscribe to the idea he just randomly picks up legit copies of the famous art he sells or, in the process of his own arts and crafts time, manages to make epic forgeries without trying. Then again that also implies the pieces that done work are inherently cursed with the easter eggs and I love it. Man fix your boat and you're golden lmao.

6. horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)

Tipper; listen she's a cute little cow and it's fun and all but when she settled in my campsite and I nabbed her from a friend it took. So much time travel to get her to lose out I lost my mind. I unintentionally lost a bunch of cute little notes I had hoarded on my board and my island was overrun. I had to borrow friends' time to clear my island of weeds and flowers. The only pro is that I discovered Lag Mountain. Otherwise I would out her through the same torture of clearing 💀

7. eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)

Broccolo; that dumb little mouse moved into my City Folk town on the Wii, right next door to my house, and had refused to leave. When I was younger I used to be so MAD like I didn't even mind Peewee as much as I minded him because at least the ape had the decency to give me personal space. But Broccolo? Nope. So superhell for him.

What I actually listened to when I was 14 (aside from Ziggy-era David Bowie, obsessively):

Fastball: All the Pain Money Can Buy -- I didn't have this album but ofc taped their one-hit wonder “The Way” off the radio, and I genuinely do still love that song! I included Fastball on this list bc they were the very first concert I ever attended. Fastball and Marcy Playground opened for Everclear, but tbh I was only there for Marcy Playground (ugh, this premillennium tension aesthetique!). I wore my Johnny the Homicidal Maniac t-shirt to the show so other people there would know I was still COOL even though my mom was with me. At one point a mosh pit started nearby and my poor mom got kicked in the head outta nowhere... I still remember the visceral, torturous sense of longing I felt as she dragged me away from the crowd, completely pissed off. I just wanted to throw myself into the chaos and dance -- this was a REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE!!!, y’know? Mom found a plastic lawn chair and sat out the rest of the night, while I was allowed to go close to the crowd but not too far that she couldn’t see me. Man, I was butthurt about this show for ages and thinking back now as an adult, it’s like... actually pretty cool that she still chose to stay and let me see the rest of the show. Maybe she could tell how excited I was, how important it was for me to see these bands. Or maybe it was because Ticketbastard was nonrefundable, lol. Ooh, another side note: I've always photographed concerts, long before I decided to concentrate on being a “concert photographer,” and it’s funny in Today’s Modern World to remember the lengths I went to sneak cameras into different venues: hiding a point-n-shoot inside a bag of maxi pads in my bookbag, for example, or duct-taping a disposable camera to my upper inner thigh (where security didn’t touch during a pat-down, and which could be easily concealed within a JNCO jean pant). I think I still have some real shitty disposable camera pics of this show, taken from my vantage point a million miles away from the stage.

Marilyn Manson: Mechanical Animals -- I got into MM within a year or so of discovering Bowie. In fact, it was one of my Bowie internet penpals who first mailed me tape copies of her Manson CDs, Antichrist Superstar and Portrait of an American Family. I didn’t have headphones so I used to play the tapes on my little boombox with the volume turned way low and my ear pressed against the speaker. My parents weren’t necessarily shocked by the ~satanic~ imagery, but they wouldn’t’ve been happy about all the swearing (I have four younger siblings). At one point my dad made some comment about Marilyn Manson not being a big deal bc he’s just “a good businessman” who is only doing shock-rock; he wouldn’t do anything that wasn’t marketable. And of course I was outraged, like, YOU DON’T UNDERSTAAAAAND, he is an ARTIST!!! Shoulda listened to Dad; I might not’ve gotten so bent about the commodification of literally every subculture if I’d only paid better attention.

Orgy: Candyass -- The other day I heard WAP on the radio and I was like, lol, I’d hate to be the parent of a teenager today and have to deal with this song; but yes it was way cool/forbidden and edgy/awkward to tell my parents I was going to see a band called ORGY. They were my fave of all the nu-metal happening in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s. The alternative rock radio station used to host these $5 concerts and I wound up seeing a bunch of nu-metal bands just before they made it big (like Linkin Park, Crazy Town, the Union Underground). I wasn’t really a fan of any of these groups beyond their hit singles, but I craved the ROCK CONCERT experience of just being in a smoke-filled spooky club hangout with a few hundred sweaty strangers screaming, shoving, groping, kicking the shit out of each other... I didn’t really give a fuck what band was playing, I just wanted to BREAK STUFF

Placebo: Without You I'm Nothing -- This might have been the first album I bought with my own money. I got my first kiss from a boy in the mall parking lot, walking back to the trolley stop after buying this record (and shoplifting from Hot Topic, causing general havoc in the food court, etc.). The album as a whole turned out to be not as good as its first single, “Pure Morning,” but I still own the CD as a memento of that day.

Runner-up - Neutral Milk Hotel: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea -- I don't think I actually heard this record until 2001, because one of my high school bffs was a fan. She’s a year older than me and so back then, I felt like her musical taste was very mature and intellectual, almost aspirational -- not necessarily that I wanted to like all the same things she liked, but I admired that she had such varied eclectic tastes and this was a lil nudge of inspiration for me to consciously decide to give different artists a try beyond the first listen. It took a while for NMH to grow on me, tho -- the first time I heard them, I thought it was some boring whiny emo bullshit, and I didn’t revisit them much until I had actually been living in Athens a few years and had a roommate who had moved here because of Elephant 6 (I had absolutely zero knowledge of Athens’ place in music history prior to living here).

What I listen to now that came out in 1998 while I was too busy headbanging to pay attention:

I’m p sure my first listen for all of these records was 2004. This seems to be the year I return to the most when it comes to getting stuck on nostalgia. I listen to a lot of different stuff and I still pay attention to current music, but what I listened to when I was 20 is like the comfort food of my music collection. That year, I was having an obsession with all things electronica, which was likely triggered by the inclusion of Morcheeba’s “The Sea” on a mix given to me by a boy I had a massive crush on. I have often referred to that time as my best year, that age as my best self -- fire-apple red hair, a DIY darkroom in the basement, staying up all night in manic frenzies of zine-making with my very best love, drinking and fucking and having the occasional mostly-responsible hallucinogenic experience, working two jobs but naively vaguely hopeful that someday somehow maybe I wouldn’t have to be working two jobs to make ends meet (LOL), travelling alone to new cities on the greyhound to meet people from the internet, making crazy plans to throw everything away and move to New Orleans (almost made it...). I mean, it’s who I was before the big trauma, basically. I’m always desperately curious to know what would’ve become of that girl had she not gotten totally derailed at what seemed to be the zenith of adolescent experience. idk how to say this in a way that wont come across as whiny and dumb and make it even more apparent how autistic i am but whatever, its my personal blog, it’s meant to be a judge-free zone anyway. its not like im not putting out this thought to change how anyone feels about anything im just ranting.

pixar has been an important special interest of mine for decades (!) as their movies were literally some of the only movies i looked forward to seeing as a kid. i hated going to the theater because of the sensory nightmare of it all but braved it for pixar movies because they tickled my imagination so much. nearly every year had a new pixar movie which was a big event in my life for that year. i think they have struggled a lot since the 2010s especially as an over-focus on sequels happened (largely as a result of corporate disney grip) so don’t assume by any means i’m uncritical of them. as with anything else i like, i’m not about to pretend like it’s golden all the time just because i’m a fan

but i feel like most of my mutuals now immediately want to assume negatively of pixar because theyre mainstream and un-vogue and pretend like the incredibly stagnant, unchanged western animation landscape they were born of didn’t exist and how crucial their defiance towards it was for moving the medium forward. when it came to western animated movies we had disney movies and disney-imitation movies, that is to say, Fairy Tale Musicals and Other Fairy Tale Musicals. which, don’t get me wrong, i love a good fairy tale musical, but pixar were special and not just for beautifully introducing & advancing 3d cg feature animation, but because their angle was telling completely new stories that challenged this whole format. it was absolutely a breath of fresh air. and the movies could be pretty genuinely touching too for both older and younger members of the audience, usually without even having to have melodramatic character deaths or anything. monsters inc. is pure character-motivated drama and the ending made me cry buckets as a kid and still does because the characters are lovable and relatable. you don’t have to throw in a dead parents backstory or whatever for me to sincerely feel that emotion for them.

as we ushered into the 00s and walt disney animation, dreamworks, etc got a load of the critical and commercial success of pixar, their response was to copy the technology but very little of the creativity/heart. dreamworks i have come to realize at least with Shrek were still doing something pretty subversive albeit in a different direction that i think was forward-thinking but by and large, attempts to hop on the wagon of what made Pixar capture the world’s attention were pretty misguided. i think as the 00s progressed more unique animated movies started coming out as things picked up real good around 2009 (you need only glance at the academy nominations that year to realize just how varied and good every entry was) so pixar kinda got left in the dust a bit in the 2010s, and the change of direction didnt help but my god, that doesnt override their significance in the whole pantheon of animation. but i feel like everyone is forgetting that and it makes me feel like im losing my mind that im the only person remembering just how crummy most other american animated movies of the 00s were. dont get me wrong im not saying that anyone who dislikes pixar or is critical of a movie of theirs is doing it to be some Mean Hater™, but i feel that the level of negativity is strangely disproportionate to that of other animation studios which is like ??? is it just because people like them and have for years so now we have to turn that around arbitrarily?

idk i just feel like because other studios have stepped up their game some people discredit pixar entirely and that hurts. the thing that has sucked the most about it is how i don’t even feel allowed to eagerly anticipate anything pixar is going to put out even when i want to because it has to immediately be couched in such harsh judgment and discourse, which /*AGAIN*/ is not me saying they’re infallible and should never be criticized. anything and everything is open to criticism, i have my own apprehensions about some of their movies too. i just feel like the aura of negativity online surrounding each pixar release now leaves me an anxious mess while anticipating/watching the movie instead of going into it with the childlike wonder i want to go in with and could go in with because i feel like ppl are going to think i’m basic or just flat out stupid for liking the thing, no matter how sincerely.

which like, i’m not friggin basic. kanashimi no belladonna is one of my favorite animated movies lol. and so is up (the movie that made me interested in animation & storytelling as artforms), ratatouille, etc ... its almost like some mainstream things are good and popular for a reason?

this rant isnt even telling you anything, i know ive historically been overly sensitive to people being critical/negative about things that mean a lot to me and i need to get the hell over it, i just feel frustrated by everyone’s relentless negativity these days and feel like at this point so much of it’s not even coming from good faith
