【Magi】 JuAli Omake Rambles 🖤❤️💛

Snippets from a REALLY long convo I had with my friend Cinna (@/cinnamononions) who was reacting to the YGO DM manga.

It was mainly us going over the Kaiba centric scenes in YGO DM: Death-T arc, and she noted differences in the Finnish TL vs. Viz's official EN TL. I haven't posted that yet. I'll put it in a future post

The convo’s really long so I’ll mainly just post the Magi: JuAli tangent part of our big convo for now.

There's some YGO DM: KaiYami and YGO: GX JohaJu rambles and misc rambles from other series sprinkled in though.

I wanted to compare this Magi: JuAli omake between the fan-TL and Viz's official EN TL.

(I still haven't checked out the JP version for this scene yet. When I do, I'll make a new post)

Fan-TL

Summary:

Fan-TL:

(+) More literal, which is interesting

(+) Usually more accurate in meaning

(+) I personally prefer the prose and wording, especially for important scenes

(-) Readable, but the text and pages aren't as clean obviously cuz they were scanned directly from the magazines at the time of Magi's release, so you can't see art details very well

(-) Fan-TL team had to figure out how to translate the names and terms, etc. So the names change overtime, and the fan scan team eventually adjusts to the most commonly accepted spellings

Viz (Official TL)

(+) Has higher res HD scans and much cleaner pages to see all the details of Ohtaka's art

(+) Well professional and sounds more natural, which is also interesting

(+) Typesetting is much better since it's done by professional typesetters rather than a hobbyist team of fans

(+/-) Consistency with how terms are translated, but they also choose really weird spellings tbh

(+/-) Viz's TL is ok. The translation generally gets the point across.

(+/-) Generally translates terms (ie. attack names) to English More distanced from the OG text in terms of meaning

(+/-) Character's speech styles can get lost with how Viz translates things though

(+/-) Often cuts dialogue shorter so it can fit within the speech bubbles, so Viz's TL often loses the full context for these lines

Me: Also first off I'm gonna start with my rambles that I genuinely prefer the fan-TL for this JuAli omake.

Alibaba's tone in his dialogue generally being much more calmer and softer and empathetic towards Judar (and thus, capturing the original intended meaning and tone much more closely to the OG JP version) is something I 100000% prefer. It feels more fitting to his chara.

Like WOOOOW the way Alibaba's "You seem rather spoiled and pampered, Judar," turns into "What a spoiled brat!" In Viz's version, does change the tone and way it comes across.

It loses the air of humbleness and maturity that his character has, late-Kou Empire arc and beyond

Me: What I cannot stand about Viz's prose is that they make everyone sound the same too. Their way of translating dialogue is so samey sounding. And it's not really the first time that a Viz official TL feels harsher. Like, a lot of softer nuances in charas' speech pattern just gets flat out erased in Viz's official TLs and it annoys me sm.

C: Yeah this is such a Viz thing, god. YGO DM’s Finnish TL still has this issue but at least like. Yugi and Jonouchi use different first person pronouns, etc. Subtle differences.

Me: RIGHT like I've seen tons of series officially localized by Viz and it's so typical of Viz's official TLs /neg

Me: Magi's official TL by Viz is fine, thank god. YGO DM and DGM by Viz are decent at least. My childhood series, KHR and MMBN/EXE were absolutely butchered by Viz's awful official EN TLs by them, tho, holy shit...

Also out of big manga EN localizers, my preferences for TL quality goes like this: Yen Press >>>>>> Kodansha >> Viz

The JuAli omake

Judar's gay tsundere ass LMFAO 😭

Gay and a menace to women!

In the original, Judar just calls him haniwa ("Clay doll") but in the Viz version it's Sausage. LMAO

Like, one example that comes to mind for me is how Viz translates the JuAli scenes in the Kou Empire arc. Like their meeting on the Dark Continent with Judar and haniwa (clay doll) Alibaba.

Summary: Due to plot/story reasons, Alibaba is currently a sausage shaped haniwa (clay doll) like OoO and travelling with Judar.

Like it makes Alibaba's tone come off WAY different... Like he obviously has this air of humbleness and maturity to him, late Kou Empire arc and beyond, and it’s especially apparent in his scenes with Judar. But it loses that nuance with Viz's version.

The Viz TL is much less softer compared to the OG which is much softer in tone.

Can't say I'm a fan of how Viz translated this compared to the fan-TL tbh but it's. Ok. You get the gist of it. At least now I have Ohtaka's omake extra comics in HD though. I do appreciate Viz’s TL for that. It’s interesting to see cuz officials TLs almost always have more natural sounding liberal English, while fan-Tls are typically more literal and more accurate in meaning.

Iirc, Viz added MLW ship subtext that doesn't exist in OG with PokeSpe (Pokemon Special AKA Pokemon Adventures manga), vs. them toning down gay subtext with Kanda/Alma in DGM.

C: They really toned down actual queer coding in DGM 😭

C: And yeha I think Viz' PokeSpe TL adds some random fanservice for MLW ships

Yeah this is how I feel about Viz's Magi. I surprisingly like most of it. Tho tbf Magi already has banger dialogue as a story/narrative, so it explains it. You can’t really ruin goated text unless you translate it really badly.

The way some lines are translated is just grrr though. It's fun to see Magi translated in more liberal English and I like it. It's generally fine. But yeah, as you said, Cinna, it's distanced from the OG text in terms of the meaning. I like how we have access to the high quality scans of Ohtaka's art for seeing details. The typesetting and fonts are better.

But I prefer the fan TL cuz it's closer to the OG text and more accurate in meaning. And I prefer the wording and prose tbh

Also the other thing is that EN official TLs usually have to shorten the length of the lines so it can fit within the speech bubbles (which is understandable). They get the point across fine, but lose the full context of dialogue lines. But I like reading good fan-TLs cuz they usually give me the full context that the original text intended.

Yeah it's like. In a way, they definitely know how to push each others' buttons, play with each others' curiosity and motivate each other!

Viz's official EN TL for AkaYona is generally pretty bland and it sounds so samey/affects how characters' speech styles are translated. It's ok for Magi tho.

Since I wanted to see how the text was originally intended to be read, so I read the Magi fan TL first. But reading in any order is fine

Like AkaYona’s EN official TL by Viz has such bland prose, it’s so boring sounding to me.

They have an interesting dynamic in that they bring out the worst in each other, but it's just super unappealing as a ship imo

But Iirc I've understood Hoshino has on her Instagram talked of Kanda and Alma in ways that kind of imply the queer coding is very. very intentional

Which is different from unintentional/accidental shounen gay subtext (which is the majority of shounens)

C: Alma is literally a woman's soul put to a man's body. SOMETHING is queer there

Me: Even the Kaiba/Yami ship in YGO DM still counts as gay subtext cuz nothing is confirmed. The food is great tho but it's still accidental/unintentional shounen homoeroticism

C: Right like Kanda and Alma are really unlike anything It's obviously intentional which is really rare in mainstream shonen

Me: The only exceptions that I can think of is newer YGO series getting more progressive. Like the one I showed. Iirc, the recent YGO series spin-off, Go-Rush, actually has a love confession between the protag and his rival

Cuz even in previous YGO series, even when love is spelled out in a gay ship, they go the cheap route of keeping it as subtext and not confirming/going with any canon ships

C: Johto Trio in PokeSpe are great besties but I feel like Gold and Crystal being involved romantically would be miserable for them both, lol

Me: Ok I'll try to sum up YGO GX: Season 3.

Judai is YGO GX's protag and Johan is his best friend who he immediately got along well with. They developed great synergy.

In YGO GX, when Yubel, the agender Duel Monster who wants to "take back Judai," possesses Johan, and duels Judai, they say, "You're actually aching with someone you love… How come you weren't this serious when I was the one involved?"

And in the series it explicitly spells out that Yubel acknowledges that the "love that Judai gave to her past self/reincarnation is now for Johan."

But YGO GX still goes the cheap route of not confirming any ships/not going with any canon ships, not with Johan, or Asuka who is the token femme love interest.

The entirety of YGO: DSOD, that canonically takes place 6 months post-YGO DM manga canon. Kaiba is mourning in his own way for Yami Yuugi (Atem), wanting to revive the Pharaoh Atem and meet him again, remaking an entire holographic replica perfectly, for him to duel against but not being satisfied cuz it doesn't have Atem's soul, having an entire space station built so that he can try and reach Atem in the afterlife, being extremely overprotective of the Millenium Puzzle since he believes Atem's soul is trapped inside so it's surrounded by glass and lasers and shit, etc.

I also managed to lose the questions I asked, but I tried my best to reconstruct them, and the support team answered everything I was curious about. This is the email (excluding stuff like my real name and greetings), but I'll add some extra notes in brackets [] for each question.

December 14, 2024 Update: Cinna (Maghni AI co-director) made a thread on Twitter (current X) about new updates on Maghni AI, using the #MaghniAIUpdate tag. I paraphrased the tweets and added links to the originals. The merger added delays to communication, but this update will be a part of filling in the gaps. (Link 1, Link 2)

Since people without an account can't view threads, I'll be linking each tweet individually.

Physical Rewards: [Q: When are physical rewards set to be sent out? Will the box copies of voicebanks be sent out with the other rewards, or will they be sent out separately?] We are currently focused on ensuring that all physical rewards are consolidated and shipped to backers by the end of December. As we shared earlier this quarter, the voice libraries for Audine and Aurum have been delayed due to our recent restructuring and to prioritize Oliver, Maghni AI's launch voice library. Despite this, the physical boxes for all three characters are in production and will be delivered along with the other physical rewards. Rest assured, the voice libraries Aurum and Audine will be fully functional and available for use once they are released in the coming year. [Note: this applies to the "Small Merch Bundle" tier and above, and the ADDON tiers that include physical items]

December 14, 2024 Update, Paraphrased Rewards are still on track to be shipped in December, but due to the effects of Hurricane Helene, the print rewards are not ready yet and they'll be aiming to ship everything in January. Stickers, badges, pillows, keychains, etc are finished, and they're in the process of taking pictures of the finished merch. (Link 3, Link 4, Link 5, Link 6)

Digital Rewards [Q: Are digital rewards going to be sent out at around the same time as physical rewards are shipped out?] Digital rewards, like wallpapers, will be distributed electronically alongside the physical rewards when they are shipped. Look forward to those soon! [Note: this applies to all tiers except for the ADDON tiers]

Custom Voice Samples [Q: I imagine that the team will reach out to backers who supported the Custom Voice Samples to check voice sample requests, record them, and release the voice samples separately. Will there be a separate release date for the voice samples?] Before each voice library releases, we will personally reach out to applicable backers, then record their requested voice lines. These recordings will be delivered in tandem with the corresponding voice library. For instance, when Oliver is released, we will include the associated custom voice samples as well. [Note: only those who supported the "ADDON - Custom Voice Sample" will be eligible for requesting voice samples. Look professor, no hands! Or rather, Ditto hands! So I randomly had an idea for another Pokemon OC for a future fan-region (unfortunately not one I'll be able to show for quite some time), and I wanted to further explore how people with different disabilities would be able to have wildly different accessibility accommodations in a world where Pokemon have existed alongside humanity throughout the entire history. And what better Pokemon to play around with the concept of replacement organs and living prosthetics than Ditto? In the region this lady is from, specially-trained Ditto are often seen as very important partners in the medical field, as they can transform not only to act as someone's missing limbs, but have basically eliminated the need for organ donors as they can transform into an exact copy of the person with more of the specific organ than the average human body would have in order to give them a guaranteed match that can't be rejected. And yes, these Ditto are treated very well for their hard work ^u^

Since the region all this is for is WAY off in the future and I'm still working out the 'dex let alone the finer details of the region itself as a whole, I don't have a name set for this lass just yet, even with me knowing a few things about her at this point. She's a filmmaker, she's a Gym Leader in the same region that my champion self-insert Jules is from, and as most of the Gym Leaders there are dual-type specialists rather than mono-types, she specializes in the psychic and bug types. I'm thinking of naming her Cinna, as it references cinammon and also sounds like "cinema", but I'll have to look further into that. I know her Ditto have names, though! Their names are Lucy and Ricky. ...because Lucy = left and Ricky = right XD

it was late. 

not that sasha was unaccustomed to late nights, often filling out paperwork long into the night – but it was the weekend, and she was tired, and she just wanted to go to sleep. 

sasha checked the time on her phone. 

2:47 am. 

sasha groaned. 

of course. 

anne was only half-awake beside her. domino four purred softly, tangled within anne’s curls – sasha couldn’t remember a day since they had gotten the tuxedo cat that she hadn’t slept like that, attached to anne’s hair. 

at sasha’s feet, two dogs were pressed together – toast, a golden retriever with long, shaggy fur, and his sister, cinnamon sugar – aka cinna – a golden doodle with pale, curly, white-gold fur. 

the only thing missing from sasha’s nearly perfect setup was the one thing keeping her awake – marcy. 

that girl has the worst sleep schedule i’ve ever seen. 

“alright, toast,” sasha announced, her voice groggy from exhaustion, “sleepy-time marshmallow.” 

toast sat up immediately, disturbing his sister, who raised her head for just a moment before sleepily lowering it back onto the bed, apparently deciding she’d rather just go back to sleep. 

toast, however, jumped off the bed with all the energy in the world, his tail wagging wildly as he thundered out of the room and down the halls. 

a surprised squeak alerted sasha that her trick had worked. 

despite her exhaustion, sasha grinned. in another room, which marcy had dubbed her main workspace, toast was pressing against marcy, gently squishing her until she stopped struggling, turned off her computer, and followed him to bed. 

“greetings, princess,” sasha teased as marcy stepped into the bedroom. “finally decided to join us?” 

“you need to stop doing that,” marcy protested, yawning and rubbing her bleary eyes. “i was just about to finish my panel.” 

“sure,” sasha deadpanned. “and you totally would’ve stopped after that, right?” 

marcy didn’t respond. 

“you can finish it in the morning,” sasha continued. “but it’s late. c’mon.” she held out her arms, staring at marcy expectantly. 

“sleep,” anne groaned, eyes still closed as she patted the space between her and sasha. 

“fine,” marcy sighed, settling into the space between them. within seconds, sasha and anne were curled up against her – and within minutes, marcy was softly snoring. 

she must’ve been even more tired than i’d thought. sasha smiled as she buried her nose in her girlfriend’s shoulder. she needs to stop working so late. 

that was an issue they could work on in the morning. for now, sasha was just happy to be with her girls.

Marcy released a sleepy murmur as she finally opened her eyes. 

“Hey, love, sleep well?” Anne whispered quietly, brushing a lock of hair behind Marcy’s ear. 

“Mm, yeah,” Marcy hummed, snuggling closer to Anne. “But you’re so warm – I don’t wanna get up.” 

“Then don’t,” Sasha laughed softly, burying her nose in Marcy’s hair. “Just stay here.” 

“I have to get up eventually,” Marcy pointed out, despite not making any attempt to move. “I can’t just lay around here all day.” 

“Why not?” Anne’s lips brushed against Marcy’s cheek. “Just stay with us.” 

Heaviness weighed on Marcy’s eyelids, forcing her eyes to flutter shut. Sleepiness threatened to take hold of her as she yawned, and a wave of security and comfort washed over her. Fingers slowly combed through her hair, peacefully lulling Marcy back to tantalizing sleep. 

Unconsciousness had all but claimed her when Marcy forced her eyes to open again, tiredly pushing herself into a sitting position. Sasha and Anne frowned, confusion crossing their faces. 

“Where are you going, Mar-Mar?” Sasha asked, reaching for Marcy’s wrist. “Come back here.” 

Marcy paused. 

“Just stay here,” Anne breathed, pressing against Marcy’s shoulder. “Forever and ever.” 

Forever and ever. 

Wait, why did that sound- 

Sasha ripped her hands free, her eyes burning with disgust and fury. Anne backed away, pain and sorrow sparkling in her eyes. 

Marcy stumbled. 

She couldn’t fix this, but maybe she could at least keep everybody safe. 

Her hope died the moment a burning sensation ripped through her chest. 

With the last of her strength, she forced out an apology that could never be enough. 

Marcy couldn’t breathe. 

“Dear, are you okay?” Sasha worried, tugging Marcy towards her. “Talk to me.” 

The chair. The helmet. Screaming. 

“Darling, say something,” Anne begged, kissing Marcy’s forehead. 

“You’re not – you’re not real,” Marcy managed, backing away from her friends – well, not her friends, both because they surely hated her now, and because that wasn’t really them. 

“Marshmallow?” Fake-Anne’s lips pressed against Marcy’s. Marcy hated the part of her racing mind that desperately wanted to indulge in the fantasy. “What do you mean?” 

“You – you’re-” 

“You’re not feeling well, are you?” Fake-Sasha sighed, holding Marcy’s hands – she couldn’t yank them free. “That’s okay. We’ll just keep rewriting this moment until you’re happy.” 

“What do you mean-” 

Marcy broke off as unbearable agony surged through her body, orange electricity burning her skin.

You don’t understand how people make friends. 

Not that you don’t have friends – in fact, you have the two most amazing friends in the whole universe – but you still don’t understand how. 

They’re your friends, but why? What bonds you? By all accounts, it doesn’t make sense – you’re all so different, and don’t people make friends over similar interests? 

That’s what you’ve been told when you ask how people make friends, anyway. And, of course, to “put yourself out there” – but out where, exactly? (They meant you have to talk to people. But what if you annoy them, or they don’t like you? What if you say or do something wrong?) 

You have the best two friends in all the universe, but you don’t really have any other friends. Maybe that doesn’t matter, as long as you’re all together – but what about when you’re not? The two of them seem to make friends like it’s the easiest thing in the world, and you just don’t understand how they do it. 

When it comes to making friends, it’s like everyone is playing one big game – everyone knows the rules, except for you, and you never got given a rulebook. 

Maybe everyone else is just better at people than you are. 

You think you could be okay at that. Not everyone is good at everything, right? And you’re smart – that could be your strength. 

You know you shouldn’t brag, but you also know you’re smart. The work your teachers give you is always so easy, and you just understand it. School makes sense, and the compliments your parents give you reinforce that your smarts are your strength. 

Your brain is where you find your worth. 

You don’t understand why your friends complain about school or why they say it’s “hard”. School is easy – it’s people that are difficult! Don’t they understand that? 

It takes you longer than it probably should have for you to realize that school is harder for them than making friends. 

But that’s okay, as long as you prove your worth through academic achievement. 





You remember the first time you got a bad grade. 

You were upset – this wasn’t supposed to happen. This was your strength! If you weren’t good at this, what good were you? 

Your parents were disappointed. 

Or, at least, you think they are – you still don’t understand people, despite all your efforts. (Can you really call it “effort” when you kinda stopped trying so that you could focus on the things you were actually good at?) 

But you can fix this – you know you can. You’re told over and over that you have so much potential, and that you just need to “apply yourself” – you just need to try harder, and you’ll prove your worth again. 





You’re slipping. 

You’re not trying enough – or, at least, you assume that must be what’s going on, because you’re smart, full of potential, and just need to apply yourself – so, if you’re getting bad grades, you just need to try harder. 

If you fail now, then all those nice things people said about you – that you’re so smart – would mean nothing. If you’re not the “smart kid”, then who are you? No, you have to try harder. You have so much potential, after all. 

You don’t understand why this line of thinking makes you panic. You don’t understand why you’re suddenly short of breath, or why you feel like you’re about to start crying – if you can do amazing things, isn’t it your responsibility to do them? 

People are counting on you, after all.

The Mission Chapter 6

Pairings: Ari Levinson x Reader

Warnings: swearing, fluff, sexual tension (I promise smut in future chapters! Don’t you worry!)

Summary: Ari Levinson tries to recruit you for Operation Brothers.  While you weren’t ready for any kind of mission, you obliged after much consideration. You didn’t plan on falling in love along the way.  But will Ari return those feelings? Or will his heart only be on the mission?

Over the course of the last two weeks, everyone worked tirelessly around the clock to get ready for the first mission to smuggle the Jewish refugees out of Sudan.  Ari made frequent trips to visit Kabede and check up on the refugees.  Wanting to go with him to meet Kabede, Ari refused; it was way too dangerous for you, because you were a woman.  As much as you protested, he wasn’t budging from his decision; but deep down you understood.  It was very risky for you and Rachel to be here.  

The day of the first rescue mission, Ari and Jake were fixing up the trucks getting ready to go. You stood by Ari, handing him the tools he needed.  Once Jake got the CB radio working, he was connected with the Navy ship.  

“They’re on,” Jake announced from inside one of the trucks.  

“Good,” Ari responded, jumping off the side of his truck he was working on.  He looked down at his watch, checking the time.  “Leaving here in 12 minutes.”

You and Ari made your way back into the hotel where Rachel was standing in front of the staff.  

“What did you tell them?” Ari asked coming up behind her.  

“That we are diving scouting spots and wouldn’t be back until the morning.”

“Good.”  The three of you were about to get ready for the mission, but there was what sounded like a very big vehicle coming towards the resort.

Heading outside, you all saw the large bus pulling in from down the road.  

Ari turned to Max. “Up on the roof.  Grab the spear gun.”  Max walked away, piling his sandwich into his mouth as you stood behind Ari.  From what you had gathered, the five of them have had some sort of combat training, but you didn’t.  You would be utterly screwed if any kind of fight broke out.  

The bus stopped right in front of the entrance and a bigger man came out of the bus, holding a clipboard with papers.

“This was not an easy place to find.  You should think about getting some better signage,” he said with a chuckle, dusting the sweat off his face with the back of his hand.  “It’s so hot in there, but with the windows open, all the dust flies in.” He had a German accent and Rachel moved forward.

She was speaking German, but you understood each work precisely.  “I’m not sure what you are looking for but I’m pretty sure this isn’t it.”

“Isn’t this the Red Sea Diving Resort?” the man asked, looking up at the sign on the front of the resort.  

“Well yes, but you see we are still under construction and won’t be open for a long time,” she replied.

“That’s not what the brochure said,” the man handed over a brightly colored brochure and Rachel glanced at it before handing it over to Ari.  Peaking over his shoulder, you could see why tourists would actually want to come here; the brochure really caught your eyes.  

The German man waved everyone off the bus and you retreated back into the hotel and into the room behind the front desk, knowing Ari and the rest of them would be joining you quickly.

You paced around the small room, trying to come up with a plan.  

“We have to check them in,” Ari stated as he marched into the room; everyone following behind him.

“No, I think we should send them in the direction of a real hotel,” Sammy pipped up.  

“Look, they were sent here by Colonel Madibbo and if they tell him what’s going on, our whole cover story could be blown.”  Ari looked at his watch.  “Fuck, we’re already an hour late.”

You stood up from the chair you were sitting on, ready to finally step in and do some sort of help since you hadn’t been able to help much yet.  “Let me check them in,” you stated confidently.  Ari looked to you, his brows raised.  “Seriously.  You guys get in the trucks and go get the refugees.  And Rachel, you can head back to your room and get started on the communications aspect.  I’ll man the front desk and the staff and get everyone situated into their rooms. Tomorrow, when the first operation is successfully over, we will begin running a fully operated resort.”

A slow smile crept up on Ari’s face, making your heart skip a beat.  He took two long strides over to you and picked you up into his arms; his hugs were the best.  “You are amazing!” he beamed, placing a kiss to your forehead.  

The four men headed out and Rachel went to her room to get her technology ready.  Taking a deep breath, you put forth a smile and walked out into the lobby; standing behind the desk.  

“How many rooms will you need?” you asked with a smile, folding your hands in front of you on the desk.

It took almost an hour, but all of the tourists were booked into rooms and resting before dinner. You went around, thanking all the staff, in Arabic, for their quick efforts of getting rooms in order for the guests.  They told you they were just happy to have the resort open and running again as it gave them a job and something to do.  You remembered Ari telling you at one point that when he leased out the hotel, he gave Colonel Madibbo an extra $100,000 for the residents of Sudan, but he made sure to tell Ari that it wouldn’t go towards paying the staff. You made a mental note to ask Ari, since now there were actual paying tourists, to use some of that money to properly pay the staff at the hotel; they truly deserved it for all their hard work.

Watching over Chef Aziz, you praised his cooking skills.  As he served the guests dinner, you snuck off into Rachel’s room.  

Knocking quietly on her door, you opened it before sneaking in quickly.  Her room was more homey than yours as she had placed some personal touches here and there.  There were photographs and small nicknacks placed around, which was something you wanted to do with your room now.  Maybe it would help you sleep a bit better at night.  

“How’s everything going?” you asked quietly.  

“I-I don’t know right now. Ari called for radio silence a few minutes ago and I haven’t heard anything yet from him.”

Your heart sunk, dropping to the pit of your stomach as you held onto the edge of the bed for support. No, this couldn’t be happening. The first operation couldn’t be a fail. As much as you loved your quiet life back home, Rachel, Jake, Max and Sammy, along with the staff were starting to really grow on you; let alone Aria.  The two of you had spent a lot of time together over the last two weeks preparing for the first operation.  And you couldn’t deny the fact that your feelings had grown for him too.  

Rachel sunk to her knees, head in her hands as Base kept asking repeatedly if Yacht One would copy.  Your knees gave out on you as you sunk to the floor beside her.  

“Yacht one to base, we copy,” Ari’s voice came over the radio and you blew out the breath you didn’t realizing you were holding.  

You grabbed a hold of Rachel’s hand, squeezing gently as she gave you a comforting smile.  Now there was nothing to do but wait to hear back from them; to see if the operation was successful.  

During the entire waiting period, you held onto Rachel’s hand.  Over the last two weeks, she became like a sister to you, which was soothing as you had always wanted a sibling.  

“Base is on the way home, with the entire cargo.  See you in a few days,” a voice said over the radio and you had to control yourself from screaming in happiness.  Both you and Rachel shot up to your feet, hugging each other before jumping up and down with joy; hands in the air.  

The two of you waited in the confines of Rachel’s room for the men to return back.  It didn’t take too muchlonger, as they were only a few miles down the coastline from where the resort was.  

There was a knock on the door and Rachel went to open in.  Standing on the other side was Ari, Sammy, Max and Jake; all with bright smiles. Rachel hugged Ari first before he came into the room.  The minute his eyes landed on yours, you burst into tears of delight knowing the operation was a success.  He made the few strides with his long legs to reach you, pulling you into a tight embrace as you sobbed into his chest.  

“174 people we saved tonight,” Ari whispered into your ear.

“That’s amazing Ari. I want to help save them all.  They don’t deserve the war and famine they are going through, nobody does.”  

You couldn’t help but to place your right hand on his head, your fingers weaving through his locks and scratching at his scalp, earning a low growl from him which turned you on like nothing had ever before.

“Now we can really celebrate!” Jake roared, causing Ari to pull away from you, but his hands stayed on you, placed at your hips.  

Looking up into Ari’s eyes, you smiled as his hand came up to wipe away your tears with his thumb.  “C’mon, let’s go get a drink and celebrate the success of the night.”

1. What does your muse smell like?

Most often, like the sweet e-cigarette flavors she prefers. Namely melon, peaches & cream, strawberry, vanilla, kiwi, and sometimes cinna-blaze. On a special occasion, this jasmine perfume that was first a gift from Dylan, then she kept on buying it. Very rarely anymore, like a Marlboro Light she’s smoked in secret, during times of stress. Vaping helps a lot with that, usually.

2. How often does your muse bath/shower? Any habits?


Emma showers every day, and hair-washing happens every other day unless she’s gotten sweaty or it’s especially humid outside (most often both) Soaking in a bubble bath is a treat she spoils herself with a few times a month on average, though she prefers it even better when it’s shared with someone special ;) One habit she has in the bathroom, sipping either coffee or a glass of wine while putting on make-up.

3. Does your muse have any tattoos or piercing?


No tattoos, though she’d consider one if she really liked it and had it done on part of her body that her pants suits covered. A few drinks would likely play a role in this decision. Ears-only piercings now, though while in college she pierced her own naval on a dare. She ended up keeping it for three years, no infection, and only had to take it out when she got to the FBI Academy because it was against the rules.

4. Any body movement quirks?

Nope, unless crazy-accurate aim with a gun counts.

5. What do they sleep in?

It depends. If alone, an oversized T-shirt and boy-short panties, or flannel PJ pants if it’s winter. If with a lover/playmate: lots of possibilities involving leather, lace, high heels, garter belts, etc. In this case, sleeping isn’t part of the equation.

6. What’s their favorite piece of clothing?

my all-time ultimate fave character: Katniss and Finnick. Like, I have a lot of them who I love, but Katniss and Finnick are tied for my number one spot.

a character I didn’t used to like but now do: Mrs. Everdeen took a while to grow on me, but by the end of Mockingjay, she really had.

a character I used to like but now don’t: tbh, it’s not that I used to like Peeta and now don’t, because I never really liked him and I still wouldn’t say that I dislike him, personally

—but there’s a lot about Peeta, especially with regard to his and Katniss’s relationship, that I find troublesome for various reasons (e.g., the way that Katniss, who is definitely canonically dark-skinned and is written against a backdrop that’s blatantly inspired by the racialized dimensions of classism and poverty, is always contextualized as Not Really Deserving the blonde white boy, who is regularly written in terms that are super not subtle about comparing him to Jesus)

To say nothing of how the text itself seems to agree with this idea, and does shit like go, “Wow, Peeta is oppressed by the Capitol too, like damn Katniss how much of a bitch are you, I mean your family and Gale’s only haven’t very literally starved to death because you and Gale know how to hunt, but wow, damn, Peeta had to help make the goat cheese and apple tarts and he wasn’t allowed to eat them because they were too expensive, that’s totally the same thing as people in the Seam literally starving to death”

Like, I’m not saying that Peeta and his family weren’t oppressed by the Capitol, because they were…… but it’s explicitly established in-text that the Capitol manufactures gradations as part of how they try to keep the Districts all fighting each other instead of fighting them, so yes, Peeta and his family did not experience the same thing as Gale, Katniss, and theirs, and part of that difference was how the Mellarks didn’t need to worry about getting enough to eat, they just couldn’t eat the expensive treats

The thing that bugs me the most, though, is the way that Peeta has supposedly been in love with Katniss since they were kids — except……… how? How can you say that he has truly been in love with Katniss when he, by his own goddamn admission, knew basically nothing about her and never even tried to get to know her for real? I’d buy that he was in love with his ludicrous headcanons about Katniss, but that’s not the same as being in love with Katniss Everdeen: Actual Person

And sorry not sorry, Peeta, but it is NOT true that you, “couldn’t talk to her”; you COULD have talked to Katniss and you chose not to talk to Katniss or deal with her at all in any context where you didn’t have the power of life and death over her (whether it was because she was literally dying of starvation, or because she needed you to make her look sympathetic to viewers in the 74th Games, and you needed her to literally and immediately keep you alive)

……Also, his version of how he fell in love with her has way too much in common with Dante Alighieri’s account of how he first fell in love with Beatrice Portinari for me to be truly okay with it, because Dante is one of the Western Literary Canon’s biggest examples of entitled dudebros who objectify women even while they claim to adore them (because over-idealizing someone is a form of dehumanizing them).

This said, I still don’t dislike Peeta. I just don’t think he’s that great, or that he’s as pure and innocent and cinnamon roll-ish as the books and fandom all make him out to be. Even without my misgivings about Ever*lark, ffs, he is one of the sneakiest, most manipulative characters in the series, and his BS sense of entitlement doesn’t only come out with Katniss

a character I’m indifferent about: Presidents Coin and Snow are both well-executed villains, but I don’t have a lot of feelings about them, personally. They were actually helped by the movies, for me, because Donald Sutherland and Julianne Moore were both really good in their roles, and it made me like them a little more, even if it still didn’t make me have feelings about them or anything

a character who deserved better: Most of them, tbh, but my top six are (in no particular order) Johanna, Madge, Rue, Annie, Finnick, and Gale

a ship I’ve never been able to get into: Katniss/Peeta, see above

But also? Gale/Madge. In my experience, the whole thing only exists so people can have some kind of “uptown girl” fantasy and go, “Look, see, I don’t hate Gale!!! Stop saying that I hate Gale!!! Just let me shove him off to the side and completely mischaracterize the shit out of him and pair him up with Madge for no reason beyond getting him out of the way so I can have Katniss/Peeta!!!!”

Even worse: Effie/Haymitch. For one thing, both of them are gay. I don’t know what books everybody else is reading, but in MY copies of the books, Effie and Haymitch are both gay as fuck, why would you pair up a gay man and a lesbian like that unless it’s like, a situation where Effie and Haymitch get married so no one knows that they’re actually married to Portia and Cinna, respectively

But aside from that (because it’s admittedly a matter of my own headcanons even though I refuse to back down from them), I just??? Effie/Haymitch is just so blatantly a bunch of straight nonsense, pairing the two of them up because he’s a man and she’s a woman and therefore any time they exchange more than two words, it’s ~flirting~ even when Effie has HAPPILY AND ENERGETICALLY been a part of the system that treats all the kids Haymitch as mentored as if their lives mean nothing, and she’s been helping shepherd them to their deaths without getting that this is not good until it affects Katniss and Peeta (which only makes Effie get it because she likes them), and as much as Haymitch’s distaste for Effie is understandable, a lot of his lashing out at her isn’t actually coming from a place of, “I object to you for these fair reasons” so much as it’s coming from a place of Haymitch being a troll for the sake of being a troll, and I just

an unpopular ship but I still enjoyed it: dude, my only M/F “ship that deserves to be called an OTP” for Katniss is called a crack ship by most of the fandom, even though she and Finnick have better-written relationship development than Katniss/Peeta and even though Finnick consistently respects Katniss Everdeen: Actual Facts Person and not some shiny pretty pretty princess headcanon about her

Sure, he may not want to be her friend, at first, because he assumes, like she does, that friends are not A Thing that’s going to happen, and if he maybe feels like he has been tasked with babysitting her and Peeta during the Quarter Quell, then… that’s not actually inaccurate, because he was kinda tasked with babysitting them by the other rebels.

Like, helping the two of them to survive and getting them out of the arena was the job that Finnick and Mags were given by the other rebels, and he had to be more hands-on about it than, say, Johanna, since Katniss wanted to have an alliance with Mags, which meant she had to have one with Finnick

So, no. The two of them aren’t exactly cozying up to each other in Catching Fire, because both of them are playing certain parts and performing certain versions of themselves based on a lot of assumptions about How The Fuck This Shit Works and a lot of assumptions about their roles and positions in everything (which admittedly end up being less than accurate… because both of them have been manipulated and lied to by everybody who’s pulling the strings)

Anyway, I shouldn’t go on about this too much more because it will make me get defensive and angry, but Finnick and Katniss are my autistic children and they are not a goddamn crack ship and if I had money, I would pay people to stop saying that so I could look at their tags and only see people tagging everything with them as “BROTP,” as opposed to that plus people calling them a crack ship

I went, “EEEUGH” out loud when they kissed, when I say MJ2 in the theatre, and I didn’t feel bad about it because: 1. all of the people who loved them collectively when, “AWWWWW”; and 2. eww, can you say, “what the fuck is this hetero pandering bullshit”

my favourite storyline/moment: The entire, “I drag myself out of nightmares and find there’s no relief in waking. Better not to give into it” scene, because I’m a human cliché and Katniss and Finnick are my autistic children. Also, any and every Joniss scene, because I’m garbage and a human cliché and I just want them to be together, is that so bad

a storyline that never should have been written: idk about anyone else, but I personally choose to live in a world where the series-long alleged “love triangle” was between Katniss/Madge and Johanna/Katniss, and the Katniss/Peeta stuff was only ever during the Games and not actually for real, and Gale and Peeta can go do each other or something, because fuck forced hetero love triangles, that’s why

Also? I’m willing to accept that Prim’s death was legitimately necessary for the plot and the narrative, in the same way that I hate Sirius Black’s death but accept that it was necessary for the sake of the story that JKR wanted to tell, so I can just go, “I see your point and I don’t begrudge you this in canon, but I am going to headcanon around it anyway because I don’t like it”

—but there was ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to kill Finnick. See, much like JKR’s senseless murders of Remus and Tonks in DH, Finnick’s death did nothing to make a point that hadn’t already been made multiple times over, and it added nothing to the story. Yea, like JKR before her, SCollins only killed Finnick for the sake of cheap shock value and reaffirming certain ideas about heroism that the rest of the series tried to deconstruct

It was pointless, it was senseless, it wasn’t necessary, and the story, characters, and readers all deserved better than that

Finnick Odair is happy and fine and he’s definitely alive, because all that unadulterated bullshit, “lmao finnick dies” crap never happened

my first thoughts on the series: uh. The first time I tried to read the books, I didn’t even get to the games themselves, because SCollins introduced Madge, introduced the backstory of her and Katniss being like kinda friends but kinda not but they’re not sure, and I was like, “ugh, why. I already know you’re going to make me suffer this bullshit between the two boys, but why would you hand me a totally valid and much more interesting F/F option. Why” and on the other hand, because Katniss reminded me too much of myself at a point when I wasn’t ready to deal with that

my thoughts now: We all deserved better, but I say that all the time about the HP series, too, so me feeling like the series was kind of a let down in various places and criticizing different aspects of it? Isn’t going to stop me from enjoying it
