Reffen
Tumblr media
Reffen is one of the newest tourist attractions in the city of Copenhagen. It is located in the former industrial Island of Refshaleøen, which used to be a shipyard until 1996.
Reffen covers around 6000 square meters of land and it is home to workshops, creative artisans and food vendors from 18 different nationalities.
In 22 of December 2017, the very popular Copenhagen Street Food in Papirøen closed and gave way to the development of a new multi-functional structure in that very same spot. Some of the food vendors in Papirøen moved across the channel, and some moved to Reffen in May of 2018.
This summer, I visited Reffen for the first time. I have to be honest, in the beginning I was a little skeptical. I wasn't sure that it could capture the same characteristics as the old Copenhagen Street Food on Papirøen. But, then I saw that not only it is stepping in as a good replacement, but it exceeds it in many respects.
Comparing Reffen to Papirøen, you'll see that it has much more to offer. One of the problems with the popularity of old Papirøen's food court was that it was really hard to find a spot to seat however, there are plenty of seating options both indoors and outdoors in Reffen.
In Reffen you also have a wide choice of activities, from recreational areas such as the skate park to enjoying the exhibitions by the workshops and the creative shops.
The abundance of space helps Reffen not only to be home to some creative workshops, but it is also hosting spaces for breweries such as Mikkeller, where you can have a freshly brewed beer from one of Copenhagen’s finest breweries, while you are enjoying a view of Copenhagen.
Reffen can attract people of all tastes and backgrounds. There are a range of food varieties for everyone to choose from, numerous activities and recreational areas for people of all ages and lots of workshops to go to. In short, it is an amazing urban/social gathering space with a very distinctive characteristic, and it is about to get better. Reffen’s vision is to become the first street food market that produces its own organic ingredients. If I had to say one negative thing about Reffen, it would be its distance from the city center however, there are busses and harbor buses going to the island every 30 minutes.

Copenhagen by Degrees
I’m still thinking about my visit to Copenhagen a couple of weekends ago now. I had a lot of anticipation built up to see this guy... I mean place.  If you have a couple of minutes, I’ll let Vince Vaughn explain.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feeIOZH7wr4
To me, Copenhagen is the Rated R guy, I’m not so sure we’re a match made in heaven yet (oh say, like Stockholm!). But I am planning our next meet up.
My day started out with a gritty street food lunch in the Meat Packing District. Not quite sure where GPS was leading me, I followed my nose a few short blocks from the train station through some cool looking old warehouses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lunch was messy and good, with a lot of fire and smoke coming from the booths surrounding me as I ate my Ethiopian food with my fingers.
Next, I took a tip from a Danish classmate and made a hike up to the Norrebro District. This neighborhood is supposed to have a sort of Berlin vibe to it I’m told, so I was curious. The pictures above are from around this area, and I crossed that impressive bridge as well as the beautiful swans along the water’s edge to get there. I have to admit, after the swans, it was sort of like Copenhagen bought me some flowers.
Before I left this part of town, I ducked into a bakery because another of my classmates challenged the status of the infamous Swedish cinnamon roll with the Danish version. I had to find out for myself. Even though I have no pictures to demonstrate the debauchery that ensued, I can tell you that Denmark did indeed take up the challenge to outdo the Swedes in this point as well (as in almost everything else)! This thing was a monster of ooo and gooo and cinnamon goodness; a far cry from the skillfully formed, crispy light, and perfectly spiced Swedish Kanelbullar. I’ll let the eater be their own judge, but I pretty much made out with this thing for a good ten minutes!
At this point in the afternoon I couldn’t wait any longer to see the canals, so I made my way towards the historic city center. A snap along the way, noting the solid bike culture of this town.
Tumblr media
Ok, so here we have it after about 3.5 hours on foot. A concentrated area of charm, vitality, fun and eye candy! Not that these elements weren’t elsewhere during the day, but I found I had to notice them as I moved around the city. Here they are, all laid bare in a glorious parade along the canals. First up are pictures from my boat tour (cause that’s really the best way to see these cities for the first time), then a video of the main drag at sunset.

Main Street Food Market in Copenhagen, and one non-stop party! I wish there was sound for this picture, because you could hear the music on the other shore! I went there for dinner after the tour and definitely got the feeling Copenhagen wanted to get me liquored up, but I settled for another interesting meal at a Thai Fusion booth.

Huge sculpture garden as seen from our boat, but I don’t think our guide mentioned the name. I would love to find out more about this installation.

As I made my way back to the train station full and processing the day, I stumbled upon this great reflection pond. I let it mesmerize me for a bit, then forced myself to find my train despite tired legs and sore feet. (That’s the one down side to all those cobble stones!)
Tumblr media
Once back in Lund, I surprised myself by deciding to walk back home even though it was close to 10 pm.  As I approached Stadsparken (the huge park close to my flat I’ve mentioned before), I saw that it had been waiting up for me with candles and perfect manners like a beautiful table setting. Honestly I’m not sure what the occasion was, but sweet little Lund wanted me to notice how good looking he was all aglow in the night air. At that moment, I felt like I was at home, and walked the rest of the way without thinking about Copenhagen or my feet.

Copenhagen - EAT & DRINK!
Aka, the start of Sonya’s Mikkeller Tour of Europe.
Madklubben Vesterbro - I ate at this place after I started walking to Warpigs from Mikkeller Bar, but then felt a little uncomfortable (it was late, I was tired, there were a few sketchy people) and headed back to the main street. I probably would have been PERFECTLY FINE. However, I was too tired to deal with harrassment in another language. Madklubben had a really tasty menu and is apparently the most popular restaurant to book at this time in Copenhagen. It was popular and I had great service at the bar. Rather large place, creative cocktail menu but I didn’t have one because I’d already had a lot of beer and decided to keep that train rolling with another one. Since I live in Chicago, I didn’t flinch at what I spent here, it was about $30 after a salad,a fish based appetizer, and a beer.
Copenhagen Street Food - This place was my favorite. All the locals were out enjoying the sun and eating and drinking on the patios. If I lived in Copenhagen I’d be here once a week. I’m sure it is really popular on Fridays after work and on the weekends. There were a few cocktail bars, a few beer vendors, and all the cuisines one could imagine. I ate Korean at the Korean Street Food vendor. The set up is an old warehouse building on what is known as Paper Island and it has been filled with food trucks. Go, you’ll love it and there are budget and expensive options here so its a crowd pleaser for a group or if you’re on an budget. I try to be.
Mikkeller Bar - My first taste of Mikkeller in Copenhagen, its a smaller location than its Nørrebro sibling but it has more “official” outdoor seating too. There’s a great mix of interesting brews on offer and I love that Mikkeller (and other bars in the Nordic countries) offer the 20 cl size for beer. Nothing is cheap, you will probably pay the equivalent of $7 plus for 20 cl of beer, but you’ll not find more unique beers anywhere either. I had three 20 cl sours and probably spent about $25.
Mikkeller and Friends - The Nørrebro location of the official Mikkeller bars in Copenhagen (Mikkeller has quite a few projects in the city). Larger space that is somewhat subterrranean but near a beautiful park and in the neighborhood that I liked so much. I had a couple of delicious sours here before heading off to do some shopping. I would say which ones but the menu is ever changing at Mikkeller so just know what type of beers you like and ask the bartenders on staff for suggestions if you’re overwhelmed by the 40 beers on tap.
Ruby Cocktail Bar - This place was suggested by my Google Trips app (which is a great app!) and I am glad that I went. It had a nice retro/throwback styled interior and the bartender on staff was dressed in suspenders and a button-down with dress pants (so kind of speakeasy style). He was friendly and extremely knowleldgable about his city and was chatty since it was fairly early and not too busy. He let me try a few different aquavits since I ordered an aquavit cocktail and didn’t know much about the liquor. I suggest stopping here for a break from the weather (no matter what it is!) and to recharge. The seating options are tables, comfy chairs, and a cozy and sunlight bar. Cocktails are about $12-$15.
Cava Bar Playa - I stopped in here to warm up before my walking tour and had a delicious glass of cava. There were some local women in there - about my age - celebrating one just getting her dream job. The man on staff was very nice and we were all chatting together at one point, from our different tables and him from the bar. The local women actually asked if I wanted to join them and had I not been going on a walking tour, I would have! They were so nice (more on the people in my next post). This bar did not have an innovative or crazy cocktails but stuck to the classics and good wine, which is fine by me! There’s an outdoor terrace with tables and heaters but on that particular day it was too windy to be outside. The bartender had to go tie everything down. My glass of wine was about $15 and I didn’t select the cheapest one.
Schønemann’s - I had to make a lunch reservation here! It is extremely popular and after dining there, I know why. The Danish open-faced sandwiches (smørrebrød) are their specialty and they were amazing. I ate an appetizer one and almost all of a lunch plate one. I had herring and salmon and a Carlsberg, which is the classic Danish beer, its no Mikkeller but I didn’t need anything fancy with lunch. I would go back here! It isn’t cheap, I spent about $40, but I also ordered two in order to sample and thinking the appetizer would be small and it was not. Service here was impeccable. Honestly, it was everywhere.
Copenhagen, I love you.

Top 5 Things To-Do in Copenhagen!
My name is Taylor Lewis, and I recently studied abroad at the Copenhagen Business School. The experience was indescribable, and I want to share its wonders best I can through pictures!
1.) One of my favorite things about #living in #Denmark was riding my bike around town. It is how the #Danes live, so ‘when in Rome!’
Tumblr media
2.) One of my most interesting experiences was visiting #CopenhagenStreetFood
Tumblr media
As the weather in Copenhagen is typically not the best, dozens of street food carts were set up indoors to enjoy the uniqueness of street food but within the convenience of a food court.
3.) Freetown #Christiana is essentially where Woodstock met Scandinavia, but never ended… It is certainly a must-see when in #Copenhagen
Tumblr media
4.) The world-renowned #LousianaArtMuseum was so cool! This photo pictures my favorite installation which allows the visitor to stand atop a platform in a mirror room while hanging lights change colors.
Tumblr media
Just a 30 minute train outside of #Copenhagen, it was well worth it!
5.) Last, but certainly not least, are the #Danish pastries! My personal favorite was from #Bodenoff, a small chain in #Copenhagen. Named after King Christian, this treat was to die for!

From @copenhagenstreetfood old digs on Paper Island. I'm excited to check out their new market -- coming May 2018 -- over at the ‘Reffen' in the Refshaleøen neighborhood. 🍻 (at Copenhagen, Denmark)
