As someone who got into the Gunvolt before getting into Symphogear I love seeing the ways the anime influenced the game, because someone in the GV team really loves Symphogear.

My favorite has to be how Copen takes more than a few cues form Chris as a "White-haired, red and white armor-clad, gun-totting rival character."

Their difference is that where Chris goes on a redemption arc and becomes the best character in the show, Copen doubles down on being the most horrible person you ever seen, but is still probably the most interesting character in the game.

I started thinking about how Copen’s temperament in mainline Gunvolt is easy to compare to Daffy Duck, and then the power of darkness and God coursed through my hands to craft this image.

I set out to give this a look that was kind of reminiscent of that...airbrushed look that some VHS and DVD covers for cartoons have. The solid black lines may not vibe too well with that, but, eh - it was worth a shot, hahaha

the most HORRID fourteen year old ever. in a world where superpowers exists, he decided "hey, that's scary" and decided to built a jetpack to kill people with super powers. only Some Guy who can control electricity has the bravery to say, "dude, that's fucked up," and Copen's life has gone downhill ever since. I geniuenly think he's an interesting portrait of a radicalized teenager, and how the belief he inherited from his father ends up destroying him. When it turns out his sister, who he treasures above all, Also Has Superpowers, his entire worldview crumbles. Cuz at first, those people were just faceless monsters to him. But now it's his dear sweet sister. And she's the one he's protecting. So he just. crumples. it's fun. there's also an alternate timeline spinoff series where he's a 100yr old cyborg fighting corporate overlords to take care of the four kids he adopted. 4chan user copen vs chad dad copen. i love this one too. He's grown past his old mentality understands the nuances of morality. Now he only judges people on their personal actions. One of his new kids even controls electricity! Truly full circle. He also has a robot sidekick he built himself and she likes to write his theme songs and perform them during combat. Lola my beloved. [additional propaganda 1]

I may be late to Gunvolts Anniversary! I might be early! Who knows! All I know is I'm very happy to finish this and celebrate a whole year of enjoying this game and its characters, I'm not sure I'd have such a fun time with my friends if it wasn't for this game series. To more years to come! :]

Copen found it worrying to be affected so heavily by death considering his life. He didn't like the way his heart plummeted into the pit of his stomach when the news came his way. He didn't like the way his body seized up and his breath hitched abruptly, he didn't like it in the slightest.

He didn't like the way he found himself relating it to the death of his own parents. He didn't like the way he found himself pressing crescents into his palms whenever he thought of it. He walks into a room and delivers death on the daily, and he hasn't been shook once by it- he doesn't know what makes this any different.

He hasn't found any time to work on his machines or properly meld the tear in Lola's exterior. He's only found the time and energy to remember to eat and take care of his sister when his mood flickers to something brighter for a brief moment. He didn't have the guts to go try and comfort the person who was most personally affected by the death. And for some twisted reason that flooded him with a suffocating sense of misplaced guilt and a immobilizing sense of nausea on bad days.

It's Nori who comes to check on him, a plate with a simple meal because he feared he'd vomit if he ate anything complex. He was sitting on his bed and staring at the blank ceiling when Nora placed the plate on his desk.

"Is she okay?" He manages to get out feebly, voice cracking with how little he's used it recently. He tries to muster enough energy to sit up and manages to do so. He rubs his eyes to try and snap himself out of the tiredness that he's been remorselessly dredged in.

"Your sister, Lola, or Haku?" Nori asked.

Copen pulls himself out of bed and grabs the small plate of pasta, there's no sauce. He takes a bite before speaking, "Haku."

"She's really worried about you sir," Nori said and she flinched at the way Copen's demeanour instantly and visibly dropped.

He ignores the gnawing hunger as he stands up and makes his way to the door. He needs to make things better and apologize, even if he faints out of weakness. Nori blocks him and he glares at her, "Let me through."

"You haven't eaten a thing in days, have a few more bites and then we'll let you through," Opal chimed in with as she sidled up next to Nori. She had her arms crossed and sent Copen a look that's a mix of unimpressed and worried. "You'll suffer if you don't eat, Copen."

"Fine," Copen seethed as he grabbed his plate and took a few reluctant bites. They were right. He would suffer physically if he didn't eat. But he knows he'd suffer even more so if he didn't try to make things right with Haku and explain why he's been isolating.

Copen takes far too long to find the right moment to bring it up, loitering around his lab and his room and the kitchen and waiting to bump into Haku so he doesn't have to seek her out. He will seek her out if he has too, but he'd rather not. He's sure he'd look desperate if he did, which is truthfully the exact opposite of what he's looking for.

They're face to face when he has tears gathering in his eyes, caught in an interaction in the living room. And he bites his tongue to make sure he doesn't start crying when he starts speaking. His nails dig into his palms as Haku looks up at him from behind her glasses, and she looks concerned. Deeply concerned. That only makes Copen feel worse.

"Sorry for being distant lately." He barely manages to choke out while forcing his composure to remain.

"Ah! No need to worry, you were busy," Haku answered with, smiling as she spoke.

"But you were hurting and I wasn't there, it was selfish, and I'm sorry." Copen can feel his reserve to not crumble chipping away with every single word he speaks. He needs to sit down. He needs to do something to get his mind back in order so he can speak properly.

"You have your reasons," Haku said, excusing Copen no matter how much he tried to say sorry. It bugged him even though he knew she was just trying to be nice, "It's okay. I had Lola to talk too about it."

"It's not okay." And there went his composure, it all fell away as he finished his sentence and he shook a little bit as he tried to calm down. He failed. He dropped down on the couch, "It's not okay, I should've been there for you. But I wasn't because I was wrapped up in my own past." He sounds sharp but his disappointment is only aimed at himself. He rubs away his tears with the heel of a gloved palm and tries to calm down because he needs to be strong for Haku. Better late than never and he's even failing a concept that simple.

"D-Do you want to talk about it?" She asked as gently as she could despite the worry coursing through her at a hundred miles per hour. She's never seen Copen break down before. Not once in the entire time she's known him, which as brief as it's been so far, feels like it's been longer.

He shakes his head, "No." He spits the word, "I don't."

Haku bites the inside of her cheek, she's fidgeting as well, trying to figure out how to make him open up. It'll help him, she's sure of it, and if it makes things worse... She shoves the idea aside before sitting down next him as he cries. He's not even really crying, it's like his body is just trembling under the weight of it all, he's just being vulnerable. And his version of being vulnerable is a lack of control on his emotions, not holding it in anymore.

"My parents," Copen starts abruptly and shakily, "They died a long time ago, and I your mom dying made me think about their death again. And it's really, really messing me up for some reason." He takes a long inhale followed by a shaky exhale, "It's getting to me when I should've been taking care of you."

Well then.

She wasn't expecting that.

"Copen," Her tone is so quiet and soft he almost mistakes it for being condescending until she reaches out to gently pull him into a hug. And he easily follows the motions, holding onto her tight and hiding his face in her shoulder and shaking. She goes rigid under the near crushing weight, she also wasn't expecting Copen to clutch onto her like a lifeline.

He can't formulate words anymore, they're all falling apart as he tries to speak. It's pathetic really, he knows it's pathetic but there's no off switch and even if there was he doubts it'd work.

"It's alright now, you don't have to keep it all bottled up." She gently strokes Copen's hair as she speaks, trying to help ease him from his heightened state of panic. "You saved me from my mom, and now, I can be here for you too- if you don't m-mind."

Copen nods to the best of his ability at the offer. He backs off from Haku to speak but all that comes out are sharp and dry sounds as he attempts to articulate. "O-Okay, that sounds great." And he's back on Haku in an instant, letting her murmur sweet nothings and hold him close till he comes back down.

I finished Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 for the first time. What a fun game. Made everything the first one did well better, and did away with most of the issues I had with it. The mix of platforming and action is very good, the boss fights are great and the games sprite work and art direction is fantastic. My only gripe is the last Zonda fight that drags playing with Gunvolt, but it did lead to the fanatic final boss, so I'm only slightly miffed about. I highly recommend it!!
