Tokyo was quite the lively place. The crowds, always a current of people moving to and fro. The trains roaring through tunnels, ferrying people about. City lights shone so bright that you could barely see the stars, and in such a densely packed population, crime naturally followed. That was how Naoto Shirogane, the Detective Prince, found himself seated at a comfortable, red booth at a polished, black table, with little plates of sushi whizzing by on a looping conveyor belt.
One would be forgiven for finding him unusual, particularly in the field of private investigation. At a mere 152 centimeters, he had hardly the most imposing stature, though his cold, grey eyes and perpetual poker face made up for it, in his humble opinion. Short blue hair, matched with a blue cap atop his head, a blue blazer over a collared white shirt, teal plaid pants, and black dress shoes provided a coordinated, professional appearance to offset any assumptions about his temperament based on age.
But for once, Naoto sat not alone after an arduous mission, nor with his grandfather. Across the table, a tall, slender woman with long, silver hair rested her hands on the table and watched Naoto with the faintest ghost of a smile. She wore a black dress suit and slacks, and her black turtleneck and high heels completed her polished and professional appearance. Upon taking a plate of salmon nigiri, she carefully seized a piece in her chopsticks and dipped it in soy sauce with a level of poise that matched her classy style and cool demeanor.
This woman, Sae Niijima, was the eldest daughter of Officer Akihiro Niijima, who the Shiroganes had recently partnered with to tackle an insidious trafficking case in the Shinjuku ward. With the case wrapped with a neat little bow, Sae had invited Naoto out for a celebratory meal. It was honestly surprising, given the way that most adults viewed him as useful only until he played his part, then cast him back into the proverbial playpen until they had a use for him again.
Sae chuckled. "Feeling introspective?"

There’s a sweet-sick feeling twisting through his stomach. The kind that only happens from lack of sleep. He’s spent too many hours trying, sleep never coming to claim him. His body is uncomfortable in that restless kind of way. No matter what position he curls himself into he can’t relax. Not that there’s ever really any good position when you’re in the back seat of a taxi.
Eddie presses his head against the window, it surprisingly not as cool as he’d expect. L.A. never really allowing for the kind of cold he’s used to, to grace her temperate lands. He watches the cityscape pass by. Concrete and asphalt shrouded in orange incandescent streetlights. Light and shadow passing over his face as they drive down the highway.
There’s a hollowness in his chest. A void left from months of long distance. He presses a hand to it, thinks covering it might make it hurt less. He looks for distraction, fills his time looking up at the tall buildings framing the street. He’s always liked the lit windows, finds some comfort in the knowledge that he’s not the only one awake. He thinks of stories for them. Someone’s up eating a late-night sandwich. Maybe there’s a couple having a movie marathon. The ache deepens as he imagines it’s him and Steve.
Too much time apart. These long tours always are. He thinks he’d rather lose an arm than stay away this long again. Needs Steve. Thinks of his smile. The taxi passes through a tunnel, blinding white lighting the way.
“God,” he whispers, breath fogging up the glass as he presses his eyes shut. Way too much time apart.
The plane ride isn’t any better. Neck pillow doesn’t help. Sleep mask, fuck that. He settles back in his seat, restlessness riding up his spine. He closes his eyes, thinks of Steve’s laugh. The person next to him turns on their reading light, warm light shines through his lids. He takes a breath and pulls out his Walkman, sliding his headphones on. He hopes the music will drown everything else out.
By the time the plane lands pink is blooming into the purple sky, orange just on the edge of the horizon. It’s so quiet. Eddie thinks this is what it must be like in apocalypse movies. Everything gated and lights turned off. Barely anyone around as the tiny plane of people from the red eye make their way to baggage claim.
He’s mindlessly watching the conveyor belt. Boring bag after boring bag when-
“Hey,” He knows the voice probably better than his own. A breath escapes him and he allows himself to fall back. It’s less of a timber and more of a full collapse. He’s caught in broad strong arms, warmth and safety flood over him.
“Hey,” Eddie slowly opens his eyes to look up. Sunlight pours over Steve’s shoulders, casts a golden halo over the puff of his effortlessly perfect messy hair.
“Hey,” Steve smiles down at him. His voice softer this time, affection spilling out from every bit of the little word. They take a moment to just stare at each other. Hungry eyes finally taking in the only thing they’ve been wanting to see. It takes all his will power but Steve breaks first, hauls Eddie back up to his feet, wanting to keep the affection going but there’s too many people. Too many eyes already drifting to them. It doesn’t help that there’s a teen nudging their mother’s arm, trying but failing to discretely point at Eddie. “It’s him! It’s him!” screaming out in the action.
Eddie graciously waves at the kid. In turn the kid looks to their mother as if asking, “can I?” to which she nods and she comes running up to Eddie.
“Here,” Steve’s passing him a sharpie, already prepared for this to happen, “I’ll get your bags,” Steve says as he moves away to look for them.
By the time they’re saying their goodbyes, Eddie giving the kid a quick hug, Steve is wandering back. Guitar slung over his shoulder and luggage being wheeled behind him. They walk out side by side, falling into that “safe” public distance they both so hate.
“Fuck these things,” They’re halfway down a backroad when Eddie’s pushing up the middle armrests of their car. He’d bought a 1989 Lincoln Continental a while back just for this purpose and this purpose alone. Steve’s quick to pull over, tossing the car in park. Seatbelts thrown off and the two of them crash into one another.
Warm breath coming out in puffs between their lips in the still cold car cabin. Hands grasp at clothes, fingers curling into fabric, nails grazing skin. Eddie’s pulling Steve over him with strength Steve wasn’t expecting from a half-asleep Eddie.
“Needed you,” Eddie breathes and Steve can’t keep back the noise Eddie pulls out of him with a sharp tug to the hair at the nape of his neck. Months apart have left them both aching. It kills Steve he can't just tour with Eddie. "Take my heart when you go." "Take mine in it's place." They trade hearts, always do when Eddie goes on tour. It's never enough, both needing the other close, closer than they'll ever be able to get. Need to be soul deep.
Eddie presses his tongue into Steve’s mouth who accepts it eagerly. More noises spill out of Steve's lips as Eddie rocks his hips up. Even through jeans the other’s body feels so good against their own. The thought of ‘too long.’ rings out in Eddie’s mind again. Once again it’s Steve with the will power.
“Home,” He sighs into Eddie’s ear as Eddie bites and licks up his neck, causing him to whimper. Steve licks his lips and swallows hard, “Let’s get you home.”
Eddie grins against Steve’s skin. Wrapped in Steve’s light, Eddie knows, “I already am,” and he pulls Steve in to another kiss.
(A/N: The "Take my heart when you go." "Take mine in it's place." line is from Westworld S02E08. I just really loved it and could very much see Eddie and Steve saying it to each other.)

Crystal Cavern Zone: very dazzling underground world filled with shimmering crystals of all colors and sizes. lots of twisting tunnels, hazardous crystal formations. The zone is illuminated by the glow of the crystals
Skyline City Zone: bustling metropolis that stretches high into the sky. towering skyscrapers, neon-lit streets. The city is filled with obstacles like moving vehicles and robotic enemies. urban playground with breathtaking views of the city skyline.
Techno Factory Zone: In the heart of Robotnik's industrial empire lies the Techno Factory Zone. This zone is a sprawling complex of mechanical marvels, conveyor belts, and robotic assembly lines.
Aqua Reef Zone: an underwater paradise teeming with marine life and vibrant coral reefs. Apparently sonic can ride on currents to gain speed and perform impressive underwater acrobatics.
Thunderbolt Peak Zone: High in the mountains, there are towering cliffs, treacherous slopes, and thunderstorms. Sonic apparently has to navigate through narrow paths, dodge lightning strikes, and use gusts of wind to propel himself forward. The zone offers breathtaking views of jagged peaks and rolling thunderclouds.
Timeless Gardens Zone: a zone where time seems to stand still. Ancient ruins are overgrown with lush vegetation, creating a serene and mystical atmosphere. There are puzzles to solve involving time manipulation, such as rewinding or freezing objects, to progress through the zone. Serenity Slumber Zone: a tranquil and peaceful world where tranquility reigns supreme. This zone is set in a serene landscape filled with soft, billowing clouds, gentle breezes, and soothing melodies. a dreamlike environment, Sonic can apparently glide effortlessly on the currents of air and leaping from cloud to cloud.

All these endoskeletons wandering around, like a reanimated graveyard buried away and long forgotten. T’aaku felt his heart pounding from anxiety-- and the ever present, nagging pain in his head that blurred his vision. It was already hard enough to navigate in these dimly lit tunnels, and without Shane to help? He was playing a dangerous game.
Another surge of pain; he stumbled, catching himself on a conveyor belt nearby. Goggles were ripped away, relieving tension from his head in a weak attempt to alleviate his affliction. But before he could worry about the impending migraine, he heard it: hissing, mechanical motions fast approaching. His body tensed, using the conveyor for support.
Two ahead-- One behind. He was trapped.
Shakily, T’aaku reached down for a wrench at his side, gripping it tightly. He would fight his way out, if need be. “Ch'a keetáanáx.”
“I’ve never heard you sound quite like that before.” His voice echoed from somewhere nearby, as smooth as butter. That familiar, cool, British tone that T'aaku hadn’t heard in years. The purple glow of the endoskeleton’s eyes were lost to the mechanic, but William saw everything. “T’aaku…” He purred, his hopeful tone in contrast to the blank stare of the endos. “You came back to me. I always knew you would.”

Kiyomizudera and Gion
Today began at the normal starting time with a class meeting. We then went to the train station to make our way over to the Kiyomizudera, or Pure Water Shrine. Once off of the train we all walked for quite a while up to the shrine entrance area, where we were greeted by a massive and beautiful shrine building.
We then made our way up to the main area where we got to walk through a pitch black tunnel, referred to as a womb where we would be considered “reborn” after walking through and coming out the other side. This was a pretty fun experience as you literally could not see 1 inch in front of your face, only downside was we kept bumping into each other given the lack of light. After that, we went to another section which had a large singing bowl that rang when you hit it, and you then prayed next to it. There was also a section where you filled up cups with water from one of 3 streams called Otowa Waterfall, each corresponding to a different “benefit”, though you do not know which stream correlates to which benefit. These ranged from longevity, success in school/business, and a fortunate love life, though if you drink from more than one you are considered greedy by Kannon, the goddess of mercy.
After this we left the shrine and made our way to Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka streets to walk around and break for lunch. A group of my friends all got lunch with Professor Smith at a pizza restaurant, which was oddly a french cafe but mainly served italian food?
After this, we went to see Mindar, the buddhist robot. This robot is said to be a Kannon bodhisattva. This robot was animated and gave an interesting message with pretty cool visual displays projected onto the walls, talking about how to reach emptiness in order to find true compassion. I enjoyed this as it was interesting to mainly see Buddhist exposure from century old temples, to now seeing something so distant and striving to be in the future.
After this we went to Gion, which was a short walk away as we had a Geisha show to see, and wanted to walk around the general area. I really am not too much of a fan of Gion, as they have gotten pretty adverse to tourists in recent years because of bad behavior and harassment of Geishas and locals. So we actually were not even really allowed in most of the buildings and wound up chilling in a starbucks for a bit while waiting for the Geisha show. The vibes just felt weird in general, as you are aware that they are probably judging you and not happy to have you there, so you sort of feel like you are intruding somewhere you aren’t meant to be.
After this we watched the Geisha show which I could take or leave, there was nothing super special in my opinion but it was cool to see such a traditional dance being done and I can appreciate it for what it’s worth. I am now resting at the hotel and will update if I do anything else today. Edited - I ended up hanging out with a friend and we went to Round One and played some games for a while before going to Kura, which is a famous conveyor belt sushi place in Japan, the wait was about an hour so we put our name in and walked around the area for a bit. We then stopped and got some macarons shaped like bunnies which were pretty tasty.
After this it was about time to go back to Kura as we were up close to being seated. The food at Kura was pretty solid, though i’m still not obsessed with sushi it was good for what it’s worth. It was also fun just ordering whatever we wanted and having it come straight to our table via surprisingly fast conveyor belt.
Academic Reflection
After reading the article for today about “Enlightenment Geishas”, I feel that I have learned quite a bit about the history of Geisha in Japan, and how they were able to go through “enlightenment” so to speak where they were educated and transformed from sex workers to productive and moral mothers. This was the natural next step, as many men were already having Geishas as their mistresses, and were now having them trained to be good mothers so that they could bear the men’s children and raise them well. Getting to see the Geisha performance was pretty astounding and I felt that I could understand it a bit better given my newfound knowledge on the background and context of Geishas as a whole.
The second reading was taken from a Sekkyo-bushi (Sermon Ballads) performance, which gave me a better understanding of Kannnon as a goddess, and offered better insight into the relationship between the gods and humans. I thought this was a bit ironic as Kannon is supposed to be the goddess of mercy, however she does not live up to the name and instead ends up killing Shintokumaru’s mother after she was insulted by them. This seemed to go backwards on what I originally thought Kannon was meant to be like, however I enjoyed getting to hear about a story involving some of the Japanese buddhist gods, as I really do not know too much about them.

Shrink wrap (or shrink film) is a type of packaging material that is used to wrap products in a thin, polymer plastic film. Once heated, the wrap shrinks tightly around the product, which conforms to the item’s shape and creates a tight seal.
Shrink wrap has many advantages: protection, tamper resistance, and it ensures your product remains in pristine condition.
However, using this material can come with issues. Most issues arise when the heat is improperly applied to a product, or when the wrap is not measured properly before application. This can cause dogs ears, burn holes, ballooning or even angel hair! Although these are preventable, and sometimes simple to fix, it is important to be aware of the problems when using shrink wrap.
Dog Ears: This may be exactly how you imagine it. “Dog ears” refers to the corners or edges of the shrink wrap, which can fold or wrinkle if not applied properly during the shrinking process.
It occurs when the material is not distributed evenly, or if excess heat is applied to specific areas of the item, causing the film to gather and fold.
This can create the appearance of the ears of a dog, and it is a quite common issue of the material.
While some manufacturers do not find this a significant issue, failure to wrap the material to all edges and corners can lead to the risk of tearing in transit, if caught.
In order to prevent “dog ears”, we recommend the following:
Assess the heating properties: check your shrink tunnel. It must be able to cover the package properly, whilst also being cool enough to avoid your item being damaged.
Check the size of shrink wrap: when you are using this material to wrap an item, ensure that you have the correct measurements before you begin, so that you can avoid the leftover wrap that creates “dog ears”.
Burn Holes: Burn holes on shrink wrap can occur when the wrap material has been melted, or even burned, during the heat-sealing process.
This occurs when an excessive amount of heat is applied to the product, and not evenly distributed. Burn holes are a big concern because holes in your wrap increase the risk of damage before it reaches the end user. Without proper wrapping, the item does not have adequate protection, and its condition may be compromised.
In order to resolve such issues, it’s important to:
Reduce your heat settings: avoid applying excessive heat that could cause the shrink film to melt.
Use vent hole film: this allows the air to escape after the wrap has been applied.
Ballooning: Ballooning occurs when there is exposure to excessive air after sealing. This problem is common with items that have not been sealed before using shrink wrap. If the material is sealed before the film begins to shrink, the trapped air has nowhere to escape.
Ballooning in the packaging of a product can cause an uneven appearance, with the added risk of the product being tampered with in or around transit.
To prevent ballooning, we recommend the following:
Proper ventilation: applying proper ventilation holes allows trapped air to escape as the film shrinks.
Reduce conveyor speed: the hot air will have more time to escape from the shrink wrap once you slow down the process of application.
Wrinkling: Also known as “crow’s feet”, wrinkling appears around the corners of your product - forming a wrinkled appearance.
This is caused by an excessive amount of film on the corners of the product, which then form small pockets of exposed air.
Having “wrinkles” on your wrapped product results in an unprofessional display. In order to reduce “wrinkles”, you can:
Reduce shrink wrap amount: use a smaller roll of shrink wrap to avoid pockets of air when wrapping the product.
Increase temperature: wrinkling commonly occurs when the shrink tunnel machine is at too low a temperature. Increasing the temperature will reduce the amount of wrinkling, helping you wrap the product more effectively.
Decrease the Conveyor Speed: allow time for the air found in wrinkling to disappear before wrapping.
Weak and Improper Sealing: Having weak sealing on your product is a quite common problem when using shrink wrap, caused simply because your film is not thick enough.
This can be more harmful to your item, so it requires immediate attention. If you find a split or weak sealing, it can seriously damage your product. Even a small split results in weak protection, tampering issues, and potential product loss.
Ways to avoid this issue include:
Apply a thicker film: you may have a weak, or potentially tampered roll of film. Ensure your wrap is thick and strong enough to conform around your product.
Clean your sealing wire: you want to be confident that your products are being wrapped with the maximum protection, so take time to clean your sealing wire, and make sure the machine is set at the correct temperature.
Angel Hair: These are thin strands of melted plastic that are formed during the heat-shrinking process. It occurs when the seal bar is not hot enough.
As the material melts, it stretches, resulting in thin, delicate strands, similar to hair.
Poorly wrapped products which show the appearance of angel hair create an unappealing appearance and potentially interfere with the product. For example, if you were to wrap edible produce, such as apples, the angel hair may interact with the apple - which could result in contamination.
Prevent angel hair in shrink wrap by:
Increase the temperature: apply more heat to the seal bar to ensure the hairs do not form.
Adjust the seal bar: ensure your seal bar is adjusted to be level when wrapping.
Check clamp pressure: if you find that your clamp is uneven, it may not wrap well, resulting in angel hairs. Check your sealing wire works accordingly.
