Tumblr being trending on Twitter every time they implement some bullshit update is maybe a little bit funny

omg your tags on that headcanon post resonate so much with me. i love reading fsnficiton but it is very obviously whether someone is writing about the source material or playing dolls (which is an analogy i ALSO use look at us. look at us.) and while. full respect to playing dolls that shit ruled as kids still rules now probably like have fun and be yourself godspeed but it is always weirdly dissonant for those two things to coexist without clear distinction from each other. all this to say i AGREE
"it is always weirdly dissonant for those two things to coexist without clear distinction from each other," is exactly the point here for real.
There's nothing bad about taking characters and doing whatever you want with them and having fun, because you can make some really great and creative things that way. It's when people fail to be able to recognise that what they're doing is completely removed from canon that it gets frustrating, especially for anything still actively being made..
Because new canon content is 9/10 times gonna build off previous canon, and there are a lot of fandoms nowadays that exist heavily in the level 3 and beyond space of headcanons that continually act like new, official content not being fanon-compliant is disappointing or problematic, and that people who like the canon content and want to discuss it are somehow the ones that don't belong in the fandom.
Honestly at this point it's often hard to tell if people who complain endlessly about the canon of the thing they're a fan of is due to an actual inability to recognise when popular headcanons are a 3 or 4 or if there's a genuine chunk of people in fandoms who legit dislike their source material and got into the material and/or a character exclusively due to fanon creations and ideas

i keep seeing folks using FGO's 'Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental' disclaimer as a defense/excuse that the game's depiction of Wandjina is fine, which is the most low effort excuse in the book, but it's also bullshit
First of all even with the disclaimer it is still a potential violation of aboriginal law, but also potentially copyright law. Japan is notoriously strict about the use of IP/copyright. Unless they went through the proper procedure (doubtful) it stands to reason they didn't know there were laws surrounding Wandjina in the first place. Otherwise, I don't think she'd have made it through the pipeline. Even then though that is not an excuse
The disclaimer also isn't there to waive the company's responsibility for disrespectful/incorrect/forbidden depictions of people or religious figures (something I've seen both sides of the argument claim to be its purpose). It's there to protect the company from people who claim to be personally connected to and affected by the depictions
An example: Let's say there's a Real Living Person out there right now named Bartholomew Roberts. Let's go a step further and say this guy also looks kinda like the game's depiction of the pirate captain. The disclaimer is there so that this guy cannot sue the company for 'using his likeness' for their game. It's also there so that Living Relatives of the pirate can't sue the company for how he's depicted or for 'false' claims FGO Roberts makes about his history or interests.
The disclaimer does not, and was never intended to, protect the company from depicting a figure that is literally against the law to depict.

have you considered that t*ylor is a terrible, manipulative person who shouldnt have his words trusted at facevalue?.. doesn't mean he was gonna stay on. and also that the ii team has an anniversary coming up in two days. ofcourse there was gonna be celebration items. they didnt design AND produce it all the day after t*ylor made the statement in his unapologetic video [not trying to sound aggressive towards you, i just heard abt a lot of people hurt by him]
I Don't Want to Dismiss Your Feelings Outright, But There is Value in Critically Analyzing His Statement Instead of Completely Ignoring It. I Am Not Defending Taylor Nor Do I Agree With a Good 70% of That Video But Also If We Are Going Off of Second Hand Recounting I've Heard Plenty of Less Than Favorable Things About the Key Three Myself.
Also I'm Not Doubting the Plushes and Merch Were Coming On the Anniversary, Paintbrush's Was Teased a While Ago, I'm Saying Them Leaking Early is Awful Convenient Considering Everything.
I'm Not Defending Taylor in Any Sense of the Word But I Am Urging a More Critical Eye Towards the Business Practices of AE Because It Is a Business at the End of the Day, and They Will Not Be Made or Broken Upon the Posts of One Embittered Tumblr User. This Isn't Meant to Be Rude But I'd Urge You to Atleast Think About Why You Defend Them.
