Video Editing Rant

I'm putting this here 'cause a) it feels appropriate and b) tumblr deleted my personal blog for no reason so... that's fun, but here we are. Besides, I meant to use this blog for more stuff related to content creation, so this is tangentially related, right? Anyways,

I'm currently trying to edit a few videos for a side project and it's literally not all that hard. Minimal edits. It's literally just me presenting a workshop. One video recording, one audio recording. That's all. The hardest bit is me syncing up the audio between the two.

So I finished one of two videos and uploaded them (it's private and for a club, so no, they're not going up on my channel --that's it's own thing), but my overly concerned and perfectionist self decided that, ah yes, having people just watch the video on it's own is not enough, you need \*captions* that *you type*. Which, also, really isn't too hard (as I said, it's me presenting something, so I'm the primary speaker for like, 90% of the video), but it's just taking me so longgg. This video is already like, almost three months later than I wanted, but finishing the captions has felt like such a chore.

Motivation just sucks at the moment, and once I get a drive to do this sort of stuff, I just power through and then, the moment is gone just as fast and I don't want to do it anymore.

Anyways, that's a tidbit on how I function.

And part of why videos are taking so long to... *exist*.

But hopefully things will change soon enough.

and when i told both my dad and him that they were like "nah there is no way, thatd be them faking who they actually are" bro... as someone who has tried content creation in the past this a major thing you need to do at least a few times, you cannot always just hit record and spit out everything on your mind, you need to present yourself even just a little, even etho does it, not much but he still does, you need to make your content easy to understand so people know wtf is going on

and roleplaying is just an added little thing all the hermits do, hermitcraft is a minecraft roleplay that shows a bunch of friends being stupid together, some of it is their actual personalities, and some of it is them goofing off and over exaggerating shit, going with the bit, i do that with people all the time, i did it yesterday

this rant has gotten less conhesive cuz i have my family yelling around me and i cant rly like hear my own thoughts and shit so ima end it here, i think got the gist of what i meant out

Wanted to do a big pretty artwork for the Hilda finale, but I'm sick and have no ideas and motivation. So here's something simple.

I started watching the series back in late 2021, right after the movie was announced. (Which was just my excuse to watch it.)

It was surprisingly good. I was grinding a Royale High event through the entire thing and I still enjoyed it a lot. I think I watched one half of the movie before midnight on new years eve and finished it after. I went out of my way to avoid my family to watch it. I was so hyped, and it was so great. Probably still my favorite movie to this day. I've had two phases where I watched the movie for 5 days straight and never got bored, and I still rewatch it regularly. I LOVE HILDA AND THE MOUNTAIN KING ‼🗣🔥���

The series itself means a lot to me. I watched it in a difficult time in my life. (It's gotten worse 😊) It was so nice and calm. There weren't even any references to the real world and no fourth wall breaking. It was so nice for me to escape into that little world without any reminders of my own big and scary world, and it still is.

Hilda will always hold such a special place in my heart. I think season 3 was great, and the last episode was awesome.

Also, what do you mean it's been 2 years? Has it really? You sure? Are you for real????

I wanna go back to december 2021 I was so much happier than I am now 😭😭

Thanks to Luke Pearson and his gang for bringing this series to life and giving it a wonderful ending, I will never forget it! Def gonna watch it with my future children. (My reptile collection)

WATCHER CAN'T BE OUT OF MONEY TO MAKE THEIR SHOWS

Making a streaming service is going to be way more costly than just uploading the shows on youtube. Because they will have to pay for all of the stuff that youtube was providing themselves. i.e., hosting content, server maintenance, domain space, and don't even get me started on promotion. Just because they're leaving YouTube doesn't mean that they are not living in a capitalist hell scape anymore. They still need to make money. Which means that they now need to worry about making content that will best work for their seo. In the postmonopolization of the internet, people are less likely to just randomly come across website's all on their own, if they're not backed by a fuck ton of money or the brand recognition of somebody like apple or disney. And they will need fresh faces coming in. Obviously, there's going to be subscriber loss when it comes to any switch from free to paid content. As the barrier for entry has been raised, people who aren't die hard fans with disposable income are less likely to go ahead and give away their money to see content that they had been receiving for free. Meaning that in the end, they are going to be losing money on their subscription model unless they do that while having a patron, which would be fucking insane. Because less we forget, they do have a patron that supposedly earns 100k a month. Yes, watcher has a high production cost on a lot of their shows. But you know what's even higher than the couple $1000 they're spending to make things like ghost and mystery files. Running a goddamn streaming service. This thing will fall apart faster than quibbi. And either there's gonna be a big blowout and all 3 boys will never talk to each other again.

Standing on my stepstool because I'm very short, and I wanted to say that there is no place for elitism in creative spaces when we're out here putting out content for free.

It does not matter if your interpretation of something is different from another's or if your characterization is slightly more/less fleshed out than someone else. To nitpick at others because you (not necessarily 🫵😀 you, dear reader) is damaging to people who are actively doing no harm by coming in and doing their thing that makes them happy.

The fun part about creating is that it gets to cater to the creators imagination and interpretation. To claim that they should do it some other way is really being a fun sucker and deters people who already are nervous to put their work out from continuing. It's what causes people to delete someone else's favorite piece of media.

With creativity being targeted by [Buzzword Aye Eye] we should especially be supportive of others, more so when it's something you really like of theirs. Leaving a comment, even just a positive emote, means a lot to many people, and is motivating for them to continue to keep your fandom healthy and strong.

Anyway, rant over. I will step down and crawl back into my hiding hole. 🫡

I’m tired of the entitlement and toxicity of Invader Zim fans who are obsessed with purity and “normalcy” which does not exist. We’re all here to enjoy Invader Zim in our own ways. If you really hate ZADR then just ignore it. I hate ZAGR and ZASR but I’m not going around making essays about it.

there’s so much plagiarism going on these days😭😭 i cannot. but i was just thinking abt how of course it’s a huuuuge insult to the original author. but like it’s also an insult to yourself?? you can’t give yourself the chance to come up with something original, to grow and learn as a creator (you don’t count as a creator if all your content is stolen)? and so you stoop so low as to steal someone else’s hard work and take credit for yourself when you’ve done nothing but insult that writer, writing as a whole, a fandom as a whole, a community as a whole?

and you’ve insulted yourself. you’re showing to other people that you can’t be original, that you don’t have respect for hard working content creators or the effort they put into the specific work(s) you plagiarized but also all the effort they have put in before that work to form a writing style, a work flow, gain supporters and readers, etc. you’re showing that you don’t care to show your readers something original, that you don’t put true effort and care into the content that you claim to “create.” you’re showing people that you don’t care that plagiarism is insulting to your fandom as a whole, because your actions as an individual do affect the fandom you’re a part of, and you are giving them negative representation.

i implore you to try. try and be original, try to create something that’s actually yours, that you can claim. i assure you that you will feel far happier and more satisfied creating than stealing from other hard working, well meaning people. because as someone who plagiarizes, any recognition or compliments or anything given to you in relation to “your” fics is not your own. it’s given to you bc of something you stole, not something you actually created so i don’t understand how that could feel good for you. trying can be hard, but it’s worth it. it’s worth it to make something of yourself, and it’s worth it not to be incredibly rude, dismissive, and disrespectful of actual creators.

I think about The Universe for too long and now I've grown really attached to them I gave them headcanons that when measured by the Headcanon scale is on the red as: You made that tf up 😭. In the last week I have seen 3 large companies get caught using AI, one of the largest digital art suppliers Wacom, a very large online game Apex Legends, and the largest patron of fantasy art Wizards of the Coast, as well as the newest clown running SquEnix to talk about AI on the stage celebrating one of the pieces of art I have cherished. Obviously this sucks and is upsetting. The AI art trend feels like the end game of of "content"-ification of media. Through discussions of plagiarism and clickbait and content mills on youtube and other platforms, I think we started loosing ground to corporations when the word "content" started being adopted. People were no longer artists, or amateur film makers, or modern essayists, but became "content creator". All of their deep insights into the human experience viewed through many mediums, with so much complexity and love put into them, no one person could hope see and understand all of these aspects, have been put through the corporate meatgrinder, leaving nothing but a beige, homogenous sludge. Chasing the advertising dollars from platforms like Yotube or Tiktok have done terrible things to creators or even to stab each other in the back, plagiarizing their love and passion of projects in pursuit of these sucesses. Corporations have been forced to work with creatives because they want them to make "content" to put on their tv to watch in between their advertisements, or now to fill their monthly subscription to give the illusion of value, as more and more we feel the crater left behind by video rental stores. Money has stifled these expressions of art through these forms of media, becoming a modern Faustian bargain, giving creatives the power to make art, but corporate committees grinding down all of the edges to leave something hollow and flat after. AI is the beige sludge corporations want us to get used to, but it can never hold a candle to the art I have experienced and cherished. AI will never be able to rip my heart out of my chest, chew up up so terribly, the only way I can put it back together is in a heart shaped gelatin mold. I will continue to refuse to call it "content". I will continue to post what pieces of art I make with infrequent irregularity because I don't want it ground down to "content" by the need to feed algorithms and I will do my best to avoid companies that use AI anything. I hope we can weather this and make this new shitty tech fad unprofitable. Please keep making art, if not for others at least for yourself.

Fun statistics time:

- In 2022, I wrote 50k words on AO3. In English (not my native language)

- In 2023 per September, I already wrote 57k words.

- THIS IS LIKE A COUPLE OF BOOKS yet it's all slash fanfics about characters from Thai BL/QL/gen series xD

- I even worked for a few months writing articles about my obsession with some of these shows. Like professionally. Made some directors/crew of those shows happy^^

(i actually speedran learning how to write in english because my writing was clumsy at best if you look at my previous fandom and first fics on ao3, and now I'd like to think my fics are not that bad)

But damn. The way Not Me, Bad Buddy, The Eclipse, Be my Favorite, Moonlight Chicken and Only Friends just inspired the heck out of me??

I'm personally shocked. I literally picked up writing and drawing again because in my other kpop fandom the creative community has gradually died down, and here I'm like. Friends! Prompts! Fests! Meta posts! Fix-it fics! Character studies after every episode! Crossover AUs! Comics! Arts from pretty pictures!!

(tbh my drawings became worse in a sense that I do fast sketches after episodes or photos that inspired me and don't do heavy illustrations that take a long time; but also I write 3-4k fics in one sitting and I guess that's what my creative soul wants to focus on🍀)

Damn. I love you guys (my discord friends especially) for enabling me and I love these shows (even tho I interact with them and actors not in an intended fanservice way probably) and I didn't expect to fall into something like this. But that's truly what I needed.

I got over 1k views on a video, and I didn't deserve any of it.

I'm a small content creator, so I tend to only make videos that interest me, or that I'm passionate about. However, since I'm a music channel on YouTube, that's the only type of content I make. Despite this, many issues that I see with content have been troubling me, so I had to speak out about it. Please read this FULL POST if you care to respond to it.

The majority of the content on my channel is covers of Friday Night Funkin' songs, which is honestly typical of content for that game on the platform, and I use it to promote the mod that I'm working on. It's something I'm passionate about, and I hope that it pushes the mod itself into people's radars, so they check out that rather than the covers. I always credit the FLP I use in the description, so people can do the same thing as me. (Trust me, this is all relevant later.)

The highest view count on any of those videos is the one that happens to be the first video on my channel, with over 600 views. I'm not ashamed of that video, and I don't see a reason as to why I should delete it.

I've gone into making other, original music pieces as well, rather than just covers. One specific example is a Deltarune fan song. I had repurposed this exact song three or four times until inevitably settling on this use.

Around 250 views. More than most other videos on my channel, currently ranked #4. I'm proud of it for the most part, but I sure as hell can make better music than it now, seeing as its inception was around a year ago.

However, I also make original songs for original works. I have posted a song for a story I'm writing hosted on MSPFA (which I would appreciate if you checked out) that is up to my song writing skills. Only a demo track at the moment, but I was hoping that if anything, I could get a similar view count to my other videos.

Currently, after a month of sitting on my channel, it has sat under 30 views. Despite it being one of the only videos on my channel that I've promoted across other platforms, it has performed the worst out of all of them.

The final nail in the coffin for this was my latest video. After seeing a request on an FNF forum asking for a specific cover with art to go along with it, I decided to go for it since it would be barely any work. I got full permission from the artist (@sillylittlegaymer) to make the video using their art, and I released it not thinking much of it.

Two weeks later, it's my highest performing video on my channel so far. I didn't make a single asset from it. For any other video, I either made the chromatics, wrote the music or (in the sense of a SiivaGunner style rip) edited a preexisting track with my own skills.

I may have gotten permission from the artist and linked all resources in the description, but I feel like I didn't deserve any of it. I didn't write the song, create the chromatics or draw the art. All of it was gathered from others who poured their heart and soul into their creation. I just mashed them together in a DAW and called it a day.

Sure, I made a minimal visualizer, but that isn't enough. That video hasn't added any traction to my other videos, and I doubt it will. This is promoting an unhealthy mindset that you can get away with lazy video creation and bank off of it and I won't stand for it.

I will be keeping the video up, but I beg that someday the content that I'm proud of and make with my own self rather than cashing off of other peoples creations gets recognized.

In attempts of making popular jokes on the internet where they work, creators will try to promote the things they care about creating underneath the popular post they made, only to get little traction to their real content after. It's really sad to see that the one off-joke someone makes on twitter, or any other platform blows up and they end up rummaging for scraps in the replies with attempts at getting people to follow them for real art.

It's not to say the popular thing they made didn't deserve to get popular, but in my case, it surely didn't.

Optifine and reddit rant

I love using Optifine. I use it a LOT. And I mean a LOT

But since starting recording and using youtube, I also have a handful of mods I wanna use to make recordings better. Namely replaymod (the big one), boosted brightness (can be handy) and sometimes litematica (building)

1.19.3 I was able to use Optifabric to get Optifine working alongside the few mods I used, and it was great! Love being able to get the best of both worlds!

Come the next optifabric update, optifabric is now incompatible with replaymod. As it wasfor the next update. And 1.20. And 1.20.1. And so on. The mod I use the most is incompatible

So I start scouring the internet. Looking to see if anyone has a solution, has figured out a way to fix the incompatibility

And all I see??? Is reddit threads where people's only response is

"Optifine sucks lol stop using it and use sodium"

No help anywhere. Just the same "optifine is ass" "if you're still using optifine in 2023 you need to get with the times" "just use sodium *link to optifine alternatives*"

Now I have a number of problems with this attitude

The people making these original reddit posts are asking for help with optifine. They wanna use Optifine. They do not want to be told to use A DIFFERENT MOD. If I'm asking how I can get apples, I don't want you telling me to just get oranges, okay????

To get the same functionality that you have in Optifine. YOU HAVE SO INSTALL SO MANY GOSH DARN FREAKING MODS!!! Like seriously at least like 15 to get the same functionality you'd get from installing ONE thing

In the same vein of the mod thing, people's attitudes about it SUCKS because they act like this is an easy solution and "just get alternative mods lol". Hey hey you wanna know something fun? If I want to update Optifine to 1.20.2 from 1.20.1, I have to install one thing. It's great! If I want to update sodium with optifine alternatives? I HAVE TO REINSTALL LIKE 15 DIFFERENT MODS. PER UPDATE.

Now, I know what you're gonna say, "Random it's only once per update its not that much of a hassle" it really is??? Like it's irrtating for one, and for two if I wanna use MULTIPLE instances of minecraft? Oh gosh forbid I wanna do that and I have to juggle 3 sets of the 15 mods around in my mod folder

I literally have like 4 seperate "Unused mods" folders in my unused mod folder, and even with this seperation its STILL really confusing to move mods in and out and is a freaking hassle and a halve

Of course I'd still have to move things out with using optifabric, but I'll take having to move 2 files (Optifine and optifabric) in and out over FIFTEEN

Its literally EVERY comment I see on these threads is "Just don't use optifine lol" like as if its the easy win win solution that is less hassle or some crap. And it isn't!!!

Not to mention, I don't WANT to use sodium! I don't care if its "better", I don't like the interface, I hate having like 15 mods in my mod folder, and I LIKE OPTIFINE. Call me freaking old fashioned if you want I don't care, the freaking attitude of "just dont" is so infuriated when I'm tryna research if ANYONE has a solution

If you see one of those posts and wanna comment "just dont use optifine" seriously do not. It helps nobody. And your alternative frankly sucks butt and is way more inconvinient. If you don't have an actual solution to the problem people are having, DONT COMMENT your "solutions"
