Carmen Maria Machado's Her Body and Other Parties - Genre-Bending and Unique
Another day, another short story collection to pass the time. Carmen Maria Machado’s Her Body and Other Parties is a genre-blending selection of tales that will both titillate and terrify you. Mixing science fiction and horror with literary fiction with a heavy smattering of some sexually explicit details, this collection is full of LGBTQ+ representation and unique worlds where emotion is high,…

Book Review: "Goyhood" by Reuven Fenton
Reuven Fenton’s “Goyhood” is a compelling novel that explores themes of identity, family relationships, and religious discovery, providing readers with a thought-provoking and emotionally engaging coming-of-age story. Synopsis Reuven Fenton’s debut novel, “Goyhood,” follows Mayer Belkin, a devout Orthodox Jewish man who discovers he’s not actually Jewish and embarks on a road trip to confront…

JRR Tolkien: This is my fantasy race that I invented
JRR Tolkien: They come of age at 33. I've made this a plot point
The fandom: Okay........ but......... obviously they're considered adults at 18-21.
JRR Tolkien: They come of age at 33. Hope this helps <3
The fandom: No, no, no, don't be silly. People become adults at 18-21
JRR Tolkien: In this fictional culture that I've invented people come of age at 33.
The fandom: Okay but clearly what you mean when you say that is something else. I don't know what you mean by it but obviously it's something other than coming of age. Something made up, probably. It's definitely not important.
JRR Tolkien: It's hugely important and I spend a whole chapter setting it up
The fandom: But an 18 year old is an adult, tho......

Update!
Tumblr media
A fun update I was so excited to share - I have finally found a cover artist for the book!
I don't want to mention who until/unless they give the okay. If they do then there will be a follow-up, but for right now I am just excited to announce this.
Once the deposit is put down then it will be officially secured, but this artist has already looked over the content provided and we have been discussing it a bit. The piece would be completed later in 2025, likely begun around July/August due to their workload, so it will be some time before there is anything more of it. But I am more than happy to share this update with everyone!

review:
there's not a lot i have to say about normal people honestly. i liked it, of course i did; i biased towards sally rooney, i've heard amazing things about this book, the writing was gorgeous, and marianne is literally perfect.
it just wan't the stunning, perfect, gorgeous masterpiece that everyone says it was. it was still really fucking good though. personally, i think intermezzo is her best so far.
anyway, i really enjoyed this, it was good. i just felt like the ending was a little too convenient is all. then again, books like these--the ones that aren't necessarily going towards a particular plot point--tend to end that way for me.

The Sadenverse, reading order
Tumblr media
Green: Written by Eden Finley Red: Written by Both Authors Yellow: Written by Saxon James
purple is not significant, it just means the arrows are layered so its just to separate them.
✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫━✫
First off, the Sadenverse is a universe created across multiple series that Saxon James and Eden Finley have either written separately or co-written together. There’s no one “right way” to read these books, so you might come across minor spoilers depending on where you start. Personally, I didn’t read them in any particular order. I began with the Puckboys series, moved on to the CU Hockey series, and then jumped into the Mike Bravo Ops series without worrying too much about the reading order. That’s when I realized what the Sadenverse really was.
While reading the Mike Bravo Ops series, I discovered two things: first, there is a suggested reading order that doesn’t follow the chronological publication dates, and second, there are over 25 books in this universe, with more on the way from both authors. People on TikTok and Reddit have been discussing the best order to read them in. I found a map that was both helpful and a bit confusing—if that makes sense. I recommend checking out ‘Steph Sometimes Reads’ on TikTok for guidance on the reading order or this map I found on figma. The authors also have a reading order on their website, though I haven’t been able to find it myself, but others have mentioned it’s there.
Honestly, I don’t think the reading order is as crucial as some people make it out to be. If you want to dive into the entire universe, go for it! But if you’re a moody or picky reader, just read what you feel like and check the synopses and warnings for each book. I plan to read the whole universe, but I’ll drop a book if the characters start acting too stupid—I’m not about to subject myself to that, I have things to do.

I think the whole like only reading specific tenses thing is another side of the same trend in online book review culture that drives books to be marketed by trope rather than by plot. In this framework the novel is often seen in terms of what it can do for the reader (does it have tropes I like/are popular, is it as easy to read as possible) rather than what best services the kind of story being told

Book Rec: Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books by Kirsten Miller
Highly recommend! Kirsten Miller writes with unyielding wit while tackling complex and serious topics.
Tumblr media
"Her father used to say they belonged to a 'silent majority' that represented the best of America. Now Melody was beginning to wonder if there might be a much bigger group who'd been holding their tongues - people who minded their own business until push came to shove. It was starting to look like the book-banning business may have shoved them a step too far."

Scratch your Dark Academia Itch with This Is How We End Things by R.J. Jacobs
Finally, another review to write up and, more importantly, another book read! This Is How We End Things by R.J. Jacobs had me hooked from the beginning with an extremely teasing and emotional involved introduction and the rest of the novel revealed itself like an oleander bloom – stunning and deadly. This Dark Academia novel is one you must add to your reading lists, especially if you’re a fan of…

Bookworm Will Review 2024 (#25 )
Tumblr media
Title: 'Cubs and Campfires'
Author: Dylan Drakes
Rating: 3.5 / 5
Review: (MINOR SPOILERS)
I want to first thank Dylan for the eARC copy of this absolutely adorable rom-com! We all know I am a HUGE sucker for positive plus-size representation in media, so when the cover was revealed, I was SHOOK! (Not just because the art was done by Daisuke bc AH! Love their work!!!)
And Dylan really delivered in this simple cozy romantic comedy with an undertone of spice.
Luca is struggling to comes to terms with where/how he wants to take his journalism career, being a very sex positive and people centered writer, he wants to always share REAL stories. Even the ones that others seem afraid to tell because it'll out their authentic selves. Much like the newspaper outlet that is giving him this chance to give them a story surrounding celibacy. He takes another job while he writes as a fire watch tower where he swears to focus only on writing the truth about his experience with the isolation.
Until he meets Red Bear. (Artair)
A wondering, camping, couch surfing free spirit hottie who follows the flow wherever life seems to take him.
Suddenly distracted by the ever attractive camping neighbor, Luca's vow of celibacy breaks (not just once mind you) and he is now torn between writing a lie to achieve his dreams or accepting defeat and writing the honest truth. The two spend the rest of the summer opening up and sharing their stories between each other and the vast vulnerable safe space of the forest.
