The Ontario government's proposal to close supervised drug consumption sites(opens in a new tab) may affect more facilities than initially expected, hitting programs that attend to thousands of potentially deadly overdoses a year, as lawyers doubt whether the move is constitutional.
A review by CTV News Toronto of federal government data shows that the sites slated to close because they are within 200 metres of a school or daycare help, on average, more than three people survive overdoses each day in Toronto and almost six a day across Ontario – a good first estimate of the number of people who may die without these programs, experts say.
"As a public health researcher, I feel quite confident in saying that if we cut supervised injection sites and supervised consumption sites in the province of Ontario, there will be increases in fatal overdose rates because we know from the research just how much these services have an impact and how much they do save lives," assistant professor Gillian Kolla said in an interview.

at a certain point i think we need to acknowledge that art is very rarely created accidentally. if you can see a theme in a work than that theme was, more likely than not, at least somewhat intentional on behalf of the creator. you don't put a piece of yourself out into the world without thinking about what it means at least a little bit.

Liv what did you struggle most with when you went vegan? I’m trying to cut out meat but I’m having a bad time 😭
ohhhh good question! i think i had an easier time than most ppl because i had a lot of aversions to meat and eggs unless they were prepared in v specific ways, and i don't like cheese and was pretty sure dairy was making me break out so i was already drinking non-dairy milk at home.
all of which is to say it wasn't a huge struggle for me to just make the few changes to transition to plant based!! i think the hardest part was avoiding the animals products hiding IN other things. ;ike pastries with butter! or eggs in cake! or modified milk ingredients in LITERALLY EVERYTHING. those little things were what gave me the hardest time, but now i just know what I can and can't have and don't really think about it very much—i promise it gets easier!!

and see how dialogue isn't possible when you block someone who doesn't even disagree with your movement, just with certain premises behind it? see how it doesn't allow for practicing harm reduction or nuance? when i'm struggling to get myself to eat anything at all, which can last for days or weeks at a time, what i do eat needs to count. sorry, i'm eating the cheese stick because it's the only thing that sounds palatable and it gives me seven grams of protein. sorry there's no room for women with eating disorders and deficiencies because "eat less animal products" isn't good enough when your ideology values non-human animals more than women's health. but of course the burden falls on women to make ourselves tired and weak while the male-led industry overproduces and overconsumes. at least you stayed true to your logically inconsistent, female-socialized emotion-based beliefs and allowed for zero compromise! there's no way your airtight ethical philosophy has blatant logical flaws at the slightest nudge of critical thought, the people who point out fallacies are just heartless!
#the fact that i considered breaking mutuals w this person so many times#but i'm the one who gets blocked in the end lmao#sorry you have no rebuttal to my argument lol#notice how nearly every woman who agreed with me also agreed that the current animal ag industry is the problem#and that we all would like to consume less animal products where we can#but when your ideology is so militant that that isn't good enough because ''meat is murder'' (but only when humans kill animals)#(but remember we've elevated non-human animals to human status. so every time a predator kills a prey animal: murder.)#(wait that's different. it's because ummm humans interfering with animals isn't natural. so are we on the same level as non-human animals?)#(yes but no! pre-industrialization agriculture wasn't part of nature because uh. humans did it.)#(and humans aren't part of nature because of animal agriculture. flawless non-circular logic.)#(so in conclusion all animals have equal personhood except when they obviously don't have the same morality because they're animals)#(this is why there can be no harm reduction because all animal products are human rights violations on par with rape and femicide)#(no this isn't degrading to women bc we told you chickens have the same personhood as women!! and don't question that either!!)#anyway i limit animal consumption to the best of my ability but meat is not murder. if that's not good enough then bite me#sorry to the normal vegans out there who don't treat it like a human rights movement. you get too much shit and i'm adding to it rip

Manitoba could soon have its first official supervised drug consumption site – a move advocates say can save lives in a province dealing with a toxic drug supply and accidental overdoses. On Wednesday, the province's newly minted Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Minister Bernadette Smith said the new government is committed to opening a safe consumption site. "We're committed to opening one up. We saw over 400 deaths last year and we don't want to see those rise," Smith said, adding she has been in talks with front-line organizations.

As the holiday season approaches, I've been starting to think about gifts for friends and family. I'm also thinking a lot about capitalism, and the political climate, and how I can make a difference.
For many years now, I've been far too reliant on Amazon for someone that lives in an urban area with enough brick-and-mortar stores still to get what I need. Sometimes it's been about the convenience of getting things delivered quickly, other times it's about being able to find an obscure thing just by hitting the search bar. Sometimes, it's about being able to find the thing at a decently low price.
Thing is, corporate America means almost all business is just a giant nesting doll of parent companies. It is so fucking hard to spend ethically in this country, especially if you're poor. But I realize more and more that that line of thinking — that bad is inevitable so I might as well get the cheap/fast/convenient option — is a dangerous trap in and of itself.
No, it's not fully possible to disengage from capitalism in a country built on capitalism. But just like with voting, it's about harm reduction. It's about doing what you can, where you are able, even if the effect feels like it's not enough.
So, I'm planning to avoid Amazon this holiday season. I'm going to work as hard as I can to avoid making purchases there. I'm choosing to reduce the harm.
And for those of you that know me in person, my friends and family, if you are planning to get me a holiday gift - here's my wishlist:
Please don't buy from Amazon. I would rather receive nothing. I don't need anything. If you've already done your gift-buying, don't feel guilty for it; this isn't about guilt. But you can literally just send me a card that says "Your gift is me not buying from Amazon." Your gift to me can be not putting money in Bezos' pocket and that will be a wonderful thing. You can donate to a better cause, like the Trevor Project, or Planned Parenthood, and that will be an even better thing.

There are a lot of people who are still under the floors.
Some of them are folks who don't have any other choice than to order from Amazon. Folks who are disabled and can't get to the store. Folks who are immunodeficient and going to the store is horrendously dangerous (o hai pandemic). Folks who live in rural areas with few choices of places to buy necessities. Folks who have so little money that the cheapest option is the only one they can afford. We can't forget that they are still under the floors, too.
Capitalism and the classist society are equally shitty for exploited workers, people living in polluted hellscapes thanks to industrialized overconsumption, people who are thrown away as if they were trash after corporations have no more use for them, people who can't afford to shop ethically, and, frankly, everyone else who isn't part of the 1%. It's just shitty in different amounts and to varying degrees.
There is no ethical consumption in late-stage capitalism, and sometimes the best you can manage on any given day is harm reduction.
every so often im struck by the memory of one of my college professors getting very angry with our class (art history of pompeii 250) because when she excitedly detailed the ingenious roman invention of heated floors in bathhouses via hearths in small crawlspaces, we asked who was tending the fires. she said "oh, slaves i suppose. but that isnt the point". and we said that it actually very much was the point. she had just told us that in roman society there were dozens of people, maybe hundreds, who spent every day of their enslaved lives crawling in cramped, hot, smoky tunnels to light fires to warm pools of water (which they were not allowed to swim in). how could that not be the point?
she wanted us to focus on the art, on the innovation of heated plumbing, on the tiles and decorations of the bathhouses, and all we wanted to do was learn more about the people under the floors. and she didn't know anything more about that. in fact, she said she thought we were focusing too much on superfluous details.
it feels almost hokey to put too fine a point on the idea im getting at here but i will anyway: There are a lot of people who are still under the floors. all these beautiful, convenient, brilliant innovations of modern society (think fast fashion, chatgpt, uber, doordash) are still powered by people working in inhumane, untenable conditions.
the people who run these systems want you to focus on the good - who doesnt love warm water? - but if anything is going to improve or change in our lifetimes, you need to examine these things with an attentive, critical, and empathetic eye. and for fucks sake stop ordering from amazon
