When Fear Takes Over
Summary: When Y/N has a severe POTS episode and passes out at home, Connorâs fear for her safety leads him to call an ambulance and rush her to Med. With help from Will and Jay, she recovers, and Connor vows to always prioritize her well-being.
Connor had just returned home after a long shift, the exhaustion from the day melting away the moment he saw Y/N curled up on the couch with her favorite blanket. She greeted him with a tired smile, but Connor immediately noticed how pale she looked.
âRough day?â he asked, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
âYeah,â she murmured. âJust a bit dizzy, but itâs fine.â
He frowned but didnât pushâyet. Instead, he sat beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
As the evening progressed, Connorâs concern grew. Y/N seemed more sluggish than usual, her hands trembling when she reached for her water.
âSweetheart, are you sure youâre okay?â he asked, his voice laced with worry.
Before she could answer, her head tilted back, and her body went limp. Sheâd passed out.
âY/N!â Connor called, catching her before she could slump over completely. His heart pounded as he laid her down on the couch, elevating her legs and checking her pulse.
Her heart was racingâfar too fastâand her breathing was shallow. âCome on, sweetheart. Wake up for me,â he urged, gently patting her cheek.
When she didnât respond, panic crept in. Connor, a skilled cardiothoracic surgeon, was no stranger to emergencies, but this was different. This was Y/Nâhis wife, the love of his life.
Realizing her episode was worse than usual, Connor grabbed his phone and called 911.
âThis is Dr. Connor Rhodes. My wife has POTS and is experiencing a severe episodeâtachycardia, shallow breathing, and sheâs unresponsive. I need an ambulance immediately,â he said, his voice steady despite the fear gripping him.
He stayed by her side, monitoring her vitals and doing everything he could to stabilize her until help arrived. When the paramedics walked in, he quickly filled them in on her medical history and insisted on riding with her to Med.
When they arrived at Med, Y/N was rushed into a treatment room. Will, who had just started his shift, spotted them immediately and ran over.
âConnor? What happened?â Will asked, his eyes darting to his sister on the stretcher.
âShe passed out at home. Her heart rate wouldnât come down, and she wasnât responding,â Connor explained, his voice tight.
Will placed a hand on Connorâs shoulder. âWeâve got her. Letâs take a look.â
Connor stood by Y/Nâs side as Will and the team worked to stabilize her. They started IV fluids, administered a beta-blocker, and monitored her heart rate closely. Slowly but surely, her vitals began to improve.
When Y/N finally stirred, Connor let out a shaky breath, his hand immediately finding hers.
âHey, honey,â Will said gently, leaning over her. âYou gave us a scare.â
Y/N blinked up at them, her voice barely a whisper. âWhat happened?â
âYou passed out,â Connor said softly, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. âIt was worse than usual, so I called an ambulance.â
Her eyes filled with tears. âIâm sorry⌠I didnât mean to scare you.â
Connor shook his head, his voice breaking. âDonât apologize. I just needed to get you help. Thatâs all that matters.â
Jay arrived not long after, having been called by Will. His face was a mixture of worry and relief as he walked into the room.
âSweetheart,â he said, sitting on the edge of her bed. âYou okay?â
Y/N nodded weakly. âBetter now.â
Jay glanced at Connor, his tone serious. âYou did the right thing calling for help. Donât ever hesitate.â
Connor nodded, his guilt easing slightly under Jayâs reassurance.
Once Y/N was stabilized and discharged, Connor brought her home, vowing to keep an even closer eye on her. He tucked her into bed, sitting beside her as she drifted off to sleep.
That night, as he watched her breathe steadily, Connor silently promised himself heâd always do whatever it took to keep her safeâeven if it meant confronting his deepest fears.
âLove you, sweetheart,â he whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.
Hey love! I hope you like this and I hope youâre feeling better. Out this together dosed on anti-sickness tablets after being in the ER all night (might do a little fic about it and how reader has really hard veins) because Iâve been poked all night to be told they canât do anything. Loving life đŤśđť but once again I hope you love this and it brings a little needed comfort!

When we fall | Part 3
Warnings (for all parts):Â Fluff, angst, description of injuries and blood, gun use, cursing, probably unaccurate policing/medicine
Summary:Â You moved to Chicago to start a new life. Working as a doctor alongside your brother Connor you make new friends and although you swore to yourself not to let any man in your life at least for a while, your promises fail when you lock eyes with a handsome stranger in a bar.
Words:Â 6k
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Doctor!Rhodes!reader
A/N:Â And here is the last part of the short series. The events are inspired by a chicago med ep. I really hope you enjoyed it :)
Part 1 | Part 2
âWeâll take care of you and your daughter.â You smiled at your patient reassuringly, noticing someone moving towards you in corner of your eye. Turning your head you saw a man with tousled hair standing at the threshold, his eyes almost hazy as his gaze skipped around the room.
âWhereâs Leah?!â, he barked out, his eyes only focused on your patient. Your gaze flickered towards her, taking in the fear in her eyes and the gasp that left her lips. âJake? How did you find us here?â, she whispered, oblivion dripping from her voice.
âDid you really think you could just leave and take our daughter with you? Sheâs my daughter too!â He took a threatening step closer, eyes narrowed. âNow, where is she?!â
Your patientâs breathing had quickened and a look at the heart monitor told you she was about to have a panic attack. âSir, I need you to calm down and take a step backâ, you said forcefully, drawing his attention on you. His eyes jumped to you, anger brimming in them.
âLike hell I will! Iâm taking my wife and my kid home now!â Your eyes flickered towards the nurse, giving her a little nod to signal her to call the security service, before you met his again. âI can see youâre upset. But your wife and your daughter are sick. They need treatment and rest-â
âShut up!â You flinched as he yelled at you, his loud voice alarming multiple people around you. âEverything okay in here?â Will appeared at the door, his eyes scanning the room until they landed at yours, staying there as he waited for an honest answer.
The man shook his head furiously, but he took a step back. You almost exhaled in relief. âI want to see my daughter! Now!â, he demanded, but before anyone could gave him an answer, he turned and ripped open the curtain to the next room.
You heard squeals, alarmed voices mixing with the sound of another curtain being ripped open. âSir, I need you to leave now!â Will leaned forward to grab the manâs shoulder when suddenly he yanked out a gun, twisting around and pointing it right at Willâs chest.
A gasp escaped you as you watched Will stumble back, his hands raised. âLook man, weâre just trying to help, okay?â But the man, Jake, didnât seem to hear any of it, his eyes filled with hatred and something that scared you even more; desperation and determination. A dangerous combination.
He wouldnât leave until he got what he wanted.
âWhatâs going on here?â You heard Connorâs voice, saw him step out of a patientâs room and move towards the intruder. From his angle he couldnât see the gun, couldnât know the severity of the situation.
âConnor, no!â Your legs moved forward at the same time as the man turned around, the gun pointed at your brother. Everything seemed to happen so fast and in slow-motion at once as your body reacted purely on instinct, the fear for your brother carrying you forward.
You didnât know if he meant to pull the trigger or if it was out of reflex, but you had no time to think about it as a shot rang out.
You would have screamed, but no sound left your mouth as the impact hit you, sending your body tumbling backwards until it hit the wall. Only moments before your feet had carried you forward, but now they suddenly couldnât take your weight anymore, your body sinking to the ground.
Around you screams were erupting, but they sounded drowned out, as if you were underwater. Your name was being called, but it all seemed to blend into a haze.
You tried to peek at where you felt a sudden pressure in your body, shock mixing with confusion as you saw blood staining your clothes. Just seconds ago you had been standing in a patientâs room and now you were on the ground, your own blood pooling around your feet. It didnât make sense.
From the periphery of your eye you saw people running. Some moved towards you, but most of them the opposite way. Away. They were running away.
And they were pushing, tripping, falling over each other. âPut down the gun!â You saw one of the security men approach, his own gun drawn at the attacker. Another shot cut through the atmosphere, but to your horror it was the security man that fell, blood splattering from a wound to his front.
âEveryone just back off!â
Jakeâs sharp voice snapped you out of your shock and all at once reality hit you. Pain sank in, slowly at first and then in a stream of hot sensations. Tears formed in your eyes at the burning pain and you grit your teeth, trying to will it away, because you knew you needed to be aware of what happened next.
Lifting your head slightly you found the ER had mostly cleared out, only a few people remaining. Among them were Will and Connor, both of their bodiesâ turned towards you in a way that suggested they had tried to get to you, their hands raised.
âJust let me get to my sister, okay? Iâm a doctor and she needs help.â You stared at Connor, seeing the panic he tried to restrain as he appealed to the man reasonably. Jakeâs eyes flickered towards you, hesitance written over his face.
âYou didnât want this to happen, do you?â Connor asked, his voice strained. âSo let me make this better. Let me help.â He was pleading now and another wave of panic filled you as you realized he was only mere seconds away from doing something reckless.
For a moment you thought you were going to throw up from the sickness that cursed through your body, but you feared you wouldnât even be able to move your body in the state you were in.
Jake let out a frustrated breath, gesturing towards you with his gun. âOkay. Okay!â Connor rushed over to you immediately, his concerned eyes meeting yours. âAre you okay? How do you feel? Can you tell me where youâve been hit?â
You tried to follow his questions, your mind spinning. Instead of an answer you let out a groan as Connor found your wound, pressing down on it. âWe need to stop the bleeding.â
Now that he was here by your side a weakness took over your body and you welcomed it. Welcomed the dark, because it felt easier to lean into it than fight it. But it never swallowed you. As much as you wished you could just pass out, the pain didnât end, keeping you caged in your body.
You didnât need to ask him how serious your condition was. The urgency in Connorâs movement alone was enough for you to confirm it was bad, the seeping hot pain a further indicator.
You saw Jake still waving his gun around, speaking in an animated tone with Will and Maggie. To your left someone had crouched down next to the security guard and you felt a flicker of relief when you saw it was Ethan.
A cough rose up your throat and your body shook, sending an ache through you. When you wiped your mouth you noticed your skin had turned red.
âNo, no, noâ, your brother whispered, his eyes frantic. âConnorâ, you said, your voice a little hoarse. He paused for a moment, both of you locking eyes in a quiet exchange. âIâm scaredâ, you whispered, feeling a few tears escape your eyes.
Connor swallowed, his eyes filled with desperation. âI knowâ, he leaned closer, âBut you will be okay. I will fix it, okay?.â
You nodded slowly, needing to cling to his words. To hold onto the reminder that you would be okay. That your life wasnât over when you hadnât even started fully living yet.
It didnât make sense. You had woken up a few minutes before your alarm clock, had been in an oddly good mood as you had gotten ready for work and even your patients had been unusually patient and grateful. Today was a good day. Not a day that could turn into such a catastrophe in the blink of an eye.
This didnât happen. Maybe in books or on tv. But not here, not to people like you.
âHey!â Dr. Goodwin appeared in your vision, bending down to Connor and you. âWhatâs the status?â You hadnât seen her before, but knowing she was here already gave you a sparkle of hope. As the hospitalâs executive director it was her job to find solutions, even in the face of the worst possible events. She would get them out of here, somehow.
âSheâs been shot in the abdomen. No exit wound so the bullet is still inside. I believe sheâs bleeding internally.â
You saw a shadow cloud Dr. Goodwinâs as she looked at you and it was as if you could see the wheels in her head turning as she assessed the situation.
âWhatâs going on?â, you asked weakly, needing to know if the others were safe. âMr. Whitman demands to take his wife and daughter and leave. I was on the phone with the Chicago police department. They told me heâs got a history of domestic abuse and violence. The wife filed a report on him and moved states to get him out of her life.â
âAnd he found her now.â You gulped, slowly piecing the pieces together. Dr. Goodwin nodded, graveness written over her face. âSo whatâs the plan?â It was Connor, his voice urgent.
Dr. Goodwin sighed, taking off her glasses and pinching the brick of her nose. You had never seen her like this, so defeated, and it filled you with unease.
âThe police is here and a squad team too. But there is no way we can let them inside or get someone outside right now without Mr. Whitman noticing. Right now they are preparing for getting just one person in. Unarmed.â
âWhat help is that going to be?â Connor let out a scoff and it annoyed you how quick to judge he was, and more so, that you agreed with him. What would another person talking to Jake change?
âIt would be a trained officer, who has the experience and skills to deal with these kind of high pressure situations. The plan would be for him to try and talk to Mr. Whitman first and if thatâs not effective either, assess the situation and make a move or get back to the team and share valuable information with them.â
You could see Connor still shaking his head, but Dr. Goodwin stood again. âItâs the only thing Mr. Whitman has agreed to. You know I would prefer to get everyone else out, but he has been clear. If one person leaves, he is going to make use of his gun again.â
âAnd what are we supposed to do now? Just wait?â
âConnorâ, you tried to calm him, but his eyes snapped to yours. âWe need an OR now! Monique!â The blonde nurse standing next to Ethan looked over. You could see the fear written all over her face. âCan you take over for a moment?â
She gave a nod, her eyes flickering to Jake who didnât let them out of sight. Crouching down next to you the two quickly exchanged their hands applying pressure onto your wound, the sensation making you let out a groan.
But you pushed away the pain, trying to focus on Connor. âWhat are you doing?â, you hissed as you watched him get up, wishing you could hold him back.
âDr. Rhodes, we should wait for the officer to arrive. Right now the situation is stable and I canât risk-â âStable? Is that what you call this?â Connor pushed himself fully up now, the movement catching Jakeâs eye.
âSit back down!â But Connor lifted his hands, taking a cautious step forward. âMy sister likely suffers from an internal bleeding. We need an OR to-â âNo! Nobody goes anywhere!â
Connorâs face fell, his shoulders sinking, but he took another step forward. The grip the fear had around your heart tightened. âPlease, I need to stop the bleeding. You donât want her to die, right?â
Jake stared at you for a moment before his attention was back on your brother. âI just want my daughter and my wife!â
âAnd we get that. We do. But she-â, he turned halfway towards you, his eyes not leaving Jake for a second, âhas nothing to do with this. Let me save her life.â
âI said no one goes anywhere! You save her here or you donât save her at all. Itâs on you!â
You watched Connor open his mouth again, but before he could say another word Jake stepped forward, his gun pointed directly at his chest.
âDo I look like someone whoâs joking?!â, he yelled, making everyone around him flinch. Connor made himself a little smaller, taking a small step backwards while shaking his head. âYeah, so you better listen to what Iâm saying! No get your ass back down there!â
You didnât have the heart to watch Connor when he returned to you, to see the defeat and hopeless on his face. The fear.
He had barely sat down again when another turmoil broke loose, gaining everyoneâs attention. It had to be the officer Jake had allowed in, though you didnât want to know what he would get in return for the favour.
Although you didnât feel much hope regarding the plan, you trusted the police to make the right choice. This couldnât be their first hostage situation, so they knew what to do, right?
What you hadnât anticipated was that the officer coming in could be someone you knew. Someone you knew very well.
Jay.
No.
You blinked a few times, but it was unmistakably him.
His voice. His physique.
A touch at your hand drew your attention away from him for a moment and you noticed Monique had reached for it. Only now you saw you had balled your hand into a fist, all the tension left in your body visible in that one grip. Slowly she loosened it, taking your hand into hers instead and squeezing it in reassurance.
You didnât know the young nurse so well- she was a little more on the reserved and quiet side- but the gesture filled you with deep gratitude, giving you the strength to look up again and face this new reality.
Jay hadnât noticed you yet, his whole focus on calming Jake enough to make an uneventful entrance. When he seemed confident in the situation he scanned the room, assessing the conditions they were dealing with.
He did it with a professional calmness you wished you could have right now, his face only giving away his emotion when they fell on his brother. âHey, man. You alright?â
He stepped forward, avoiding any rapid movements and Will nodded. âIâm okay. But Mrs. Kaden is in a bad condition. The stress on top of her physical state worries me.â
He said something else, but he had lowered his voice that it was impossible for you to understand anything. Jay nodded. âWhat about the two victims?â
âThe security guard got hit at the shoulder. Heâs stable.â âAnd the other one?â Will shook his head, his eyes filled with sadness. âSheâs over there with Connor. It doesnât look good, Jay.â
It was strange, listening to them and knowing they were talking about you. Waiting for the moment Jayâs eyes fell upon you.
You didnât know what kind of reaction you were anticipating, but nothing could have prepared you for the utter shock that filled Jayâs face as he looked at you.
You watched him do a double take, every trace of his confidence and expressionlessness gone, replaced by a turmoil of emotions. He almost lunged forward, stopping himself when Jakeâs warning voice filled the air.
You could see Connorâs questioning gaze on you, but you were focused fully on Jay as he made his way over to you with careful movements.
When he crouched down in front of you, he was close enough for you to see a hint of fear in his eyes. âWhat happened?â
Your petty argument, the distance, it all seemed forgotten as you stared at him, not strong enough to hide your own fear. âI got shot.â
Although it was obvious, it was the first time you had said the words out loud, had acknowledged the fact that this was really happening to you. It felt surreal, even with the burning pain spreading through your body, making it impossible to keep your composure.
Jayâs eyes softened as he heard your husky voice, the effort it took you to form the words another sign how bad your current shape was. For a moment his eyes drifted over your body, his face twisting in pain as he stared at your blood, before he looked up again.
âHe said heâs going to kill us if he doesnât walk out of here with his wife and his kid.â Jay nodded, his lips pressed into a thin line. âI know.â
âBut- youâre here nowâŚright?â
âYeah, I am.â Jay tried to force an encouraging smile on his face, but you knew him well enough to know it was strained.
âYouâre hereâ, you repeated relieved, your voice almost giving up at the end and you coughed. Jay stared at you, his eyes a little widened, his pupils dilated in fear.
He was scared. For you. He was scared for you.
âHer pulse is up to 120 and sheâs sweating.â It was Monique and you saw her exchange a look with Connor. âWhatâs her condition?â Jay was talking to Connor now, as if he had only now realized he was there.
Under different circumstances your brother wouldnât have let go what had just happened right in front of his eyes. He would have teased you until you would have told him the truth about Jay and you. But now he did, just like that, knowing there was no time for it as yours was running out.
The thought sent another wave of fear through your body, but with the hot pain and the growing weakness you felt too overwhelmed to do anything about it. So you tried to focus on the feeling of Moniqueâs hand holding yours, on Jayâs closeness and your brotherâs words.
âThe bullet likely caused internal bleeding. Sheâs losing too much blood.â Connor almost ran a hand over his face like he always did when he was stressed, stopping himself when he saw your blood on his hands.
âWhat do you need?â
âI need an OR. I need to find the bleeding and stop it.â His voice was a mix of desperation and determination and Jay listened intensely. His mask of professionalism was back in place, the sight having something grounding to it in the midst of this chaos, but you could detect a few flaws where his emotions threatened to pour in.
âIâm here to negotiateâ, he began, eyes cast towards Jake, continuing lowly, âbut really I think this will take a different ending.â
You wanted to ask him what that meant, but it seemed too difficult and you were forced to watch him get up instead. As Connor tried to get up too you tried to catch his wrist. You failed, but the movement still let him pause.
âDonât go, pleaseâ, you whispered, your body shaking. You wished you could stop it, but you had lost all control over it, and when had it become so cold?
You felt Jayâs eyes on you as Connor leaned down to you, placing his hands on the sides of your face. âYouâre sweating and your pulse is way up. Your skin is ice cold and youâre pale. I donât need to tell you what that means. We need to do something now.â
You felt tears run down your cheeks as you tried to shake your head, silently pleading him to stay. He had already risked it with Jake once. What would he do when Connor tried it again and this time he wouldnât give up?
âIâm coming back.â Connor stroked your cheek once before pressing a kiss against your forehead. Then he was gone, his touch only a faint memory as your head sank back against the wall.
As the two walked away from you they blurred into nothing more than silhouettes. Muffled voices filled your ears, but they were too drowned out for you to understand anything. Monique was speaking to you too, the level of her tone indicating she was saying something to soothe you, but her words never reached you either.
A part of you wanted to pass out. As much as you wanted to know what happened, with Connor and Jay not by your side any longer all your fight had left you. The pain felt unbearable now, as if someone had lit your body on fire and the flames were eating at you, slowly burning you alive.
Your throat was closing and it was getting hard to breathe. Every once in a while you choked on air, raspy coughs escaping your mouth. And it was so cold. Colder than the winter in Chicago.
The last sound you heard before the darkness finally swallowed you was a gunshot.
-
The first thing you felt when you woke was the heaviness of your body, as if an invisible weight had been placed upon you.
You could hear the steady beeping of a monitor, the sound having something reassuring to it. You listened to it for a while, too tired to pull yourself out of the haze yet.
But then the events of the day came crashing back to you, the image of Jay and Connor both leaving your side to get Jake to let them save you. The sound of a gun going off.
You blinked your eyes open, your vision only slowly clearing. But eventually it sharpened, revealing the inside of a hospital room.
You werenât surprised at the sight, but you still paused when you took in the IV you were hooked upon. âLook whoâs awake.â
Turning your head you found April at the door, a smile on her lips. But you could see it wasnât as effortless as usual and you wondered where she had been when all of it had happened.
Had she gotten out, left to wonder about Ethanâs and everyone elseâs wellbeing? Or had she been hiding in one of the other patient rooms?
âHow are you feeling?â She stepped into the room, beginning her check-up on you. You let her do it, squinting when she shone a bright light in your eyes. âIâve felt better beforeâ, you answered truthfully, growing slightly more aware or the pressure in your abdomen.
At least it didnât hurt yet. You didnât want to think of the moment the pain meds would wear off.
âWhereâs my brother?â April had finished her tests, squeezing your hand. âHeâs still in the hospital. I told him to go home and get some rest, but he insisted on staying.â
April shook her head, clearly disapproving of your brotherâs choices. âBut I did get him to take a shower. He should be in the on-call rooms right now. Do you want me to go and get him?â
You thought about it for a moment. âNo, let him sleep. Itâs been a hell of a day for him too.â
April nodded, a small smile on her lips. âWhat about detective Halstead? Do you want me to send him home too?â
You stared at her in surprise. âHeâs still here? Wait- how much time passed?â
â5 hours. And yes, heâs here. Actually, he just got himself a coffee. I might have forgotten to mention how disgusting the one from the vending machine is.â
âYouâre evil.â You narrowed your eyes at her, chuckling. April shrugged. âCanât have anyone know our secrets. So what is it with you and the other Halstead. Is he the one youâve been texting this whole time?â
You hesitated, ready to deny her words, because you were used to keeping it a secret. But you werenât sure that was possible after today, and honestly it all seemed so unimportant know that you had almost lost your life.
âWe were. But things are kind of- complicated between us so Iâm not sure where weâre standing.â
âWellâ, April walked towards the door, a smile on her lips, âwhatever it is it canât be so serious. You should have seen the way he looked at you when you came out of surgery.â
Your chest tightened as a wave of emotions flooded you. âHe really stayed for me?â
April grinned. âHe might have claimed there to be paperwork at first. And then that he wanted to look after his brother. But Will went home hours ago and guess who spend the whole time of your surgery pacing the waiting room.â
April winked at you. âIâm going to search for Ethan now. I wanted to wait for you to wake up before leaving.â
Warmth filled you and you had to blink away the tears, touched by everyoneâs concern for you. But the mention of Ethanâs name had also reminded you that you hadnât been the only one hurt today.
âIs everyone okay? The security guard, did he make it?â
âOh yeah, weâre all okay.â Before she could say another word someone else appeared in the doorway and April left, a knowing smile on her lips.
âHey.â You didnât think you had ever heard Jay speak so softly. It made you want to pull him close and snuggle up beside him, be safe in his arms and forget everything else.
âHeyâ, you said, trying to sit up a little, but realizing it was a pointless mission.
You supressed a grin when you noticed the coffee cup in his hand, but Jay had followed your gaze, lifting it up. âThatâs the worst coffee Iâve ever hadâ, he declared, âand weâve only got a new machine at the precinct last year.â
You chuckled lightly. âWe have the good one hidden in the break room. But donât tell anyone Iâve told you that.â
Jay grinned. âYour secretâs safe with me.â Pulling a chair to your bedside and setting his cup on the nightstand he sat next to you, his eyes flickering over your face.
âI prefer when I am the one taking the bullet.â
He smiled, but it was a sad smile, the stress from the past hours visible on his face. âWhat can I say? You made it seem so effortless.â
But Jay didnât seem amused, his eyes heavy. âWhen I heard about the hostage situation, I hoped you werenât on shift. I called you, but you didnât pick up.â He blew out a breath.
âAnd my brother didnât either so-â He ran a hand over his face. âItâs why I needed to be the one going in. I needed to know if you were okay.â
âAnd they let you?â Although you knew they had, you were surprised Jay had been chosen. You didnât doubt his capability as a cop, but just like you werenât allowed to be on a personal case you had believed Jayâs involvement would have been a red flag as well.
âNot at first, no. But I was very convincing. And Voightâs not too strict about the rules anyway.â
You didnât want to imagine the length Jay might have gone to, to get what he wanted. Especially with Voight, who didnât appreciate anyone speaking up against him or acting out of line.
You stirred a little, your body beginning to ache. âWhat happened after I passed out?â
Jayâs brows drew together and you could see the graveness in his eyes. âHe wouldnât let you go.â His jaw hardened. âLike I said, negotiations didnât work with him.â
âDoes that meanâŚ-â, you trailed of, your heart heavy. Jay gritted his teeth. âOur backup plan was for me to lead him somewhere the squat team could take the shot.â
âSo heâs dead now?â You didnât know what to feel when Jay nodded his head once. Certainly not regret, not after what he had done, but there was no relief either. Instead you just felt numb, like the turmoil of emotions you had experienced in the past hours had left you completely empty.
âAnd the mother and her kid?â âThey are okay.â Jay seemed as relieved to deliver those news as you felt and for the first you truly allowed yourself to take a big exhale. âAs okay as they can be under these circumstances.â
âHow could he even walk in with a gun?â You shook your head in disbelief, wishing for answers you know you would never get. âThe hospitalâs head launched an investigationâ, Jay told you and you imagined the stress Dr. Goodwin must be facing even now that it was over.
âThatâs good I guessâ, you muttered. âYeah.â But Jay seemed somewhere else with his thoughts and for a moment you feared he would go back to being distanced towards you.
But to your surprise he leaned forward, his hand almost touching yours on the bed. âWhat happened?â
You scrunched up your nose in confusion. âTo you. What happened to you? How did you get shot?â
You took a deep breath, knowing you would have to face that question again once Connor was up. He would be upset, but as much as you regretted your action, wished things had gone differently, you couldnât say it had been a mistake. Not if you had prevented something worse, like a bullet hitting your brother.
âIt all happened so fast.â You closed your eyes, trying to recall the moment. But your memories were hazy, the images blurry, only in fragments.
âI saw Connor coming out of a patientâs room and he- he couldnât see the gun. Jake would have shot him. He- I- I had to do something.â
When you opened your eyes again you saw Jayâs green eyes staring intensely at you, his brows furrowed deeply.
A shadow covered his face, but it vanished before you could ask about it.
âSo youâd rather get yourself killed?â It sounded a little accusing and your face fell, anger filling you. âDonât you think I know that now? But you would have done the same for Will. I know you would have.â
Jay shifted. âThatâs differentâ, he said, but you tilted your head at him. âIâm too tired for that conversation.â
Jay looked hurt and disappointed, but you didnât regret your words. You couldnât take his arguments now, not now when you were still coming to terms with the reality that you had almost lost your life.
âI didnât know you were so selfless. I mean-â, Jay rubbed the back of his head, âI knew, because of your job and how you treat your patients, but taking a bullet for someone else? I didnât know you were a hero.â
He was smiling now, trying to loosen the atmosphere, but this words had the opposite effect on you. âIâm notâ, you said quietly. âI didnât even mean to do that. My body just- reacted. Thatâs not bravery or selflessness.â
This time Jay touched your hand, the unexpected gesture drawing your attention back to him. âItâs always an instinct. It happens too quickly for anyone to make a conscious decision. It can be a reflex and still be brave. Because you didnât hesitate.â
You hadnât thought of it like that before and you started at him, your thoughts swirling in your brain as the desire to be close to him clouded your mind once more.
âDoes it ever get easier?â You blinked, a little scared to be so vulnerable in front of him. âOn tv they are fine after that. They are so cool about it. But what if Iâm not fine? What if that was probably the worst thing that ever happened to me and Iâm so scared?â
You bit your lip, forcing back the tears. But the truth was you werenât ready to die yet. And coming so close to death had left its marks on you. You could feel it everywhere, as you gazed around the room, took in all the sensations you could feel, looked at Jay beside you. It was all so much.
âHey.â Jay squeezed your hand. âThatâs acting. Itâs fake. You almost died. Youâre not supposed to be fine right now.â
A tear escaped your eye and you wiped at it, trying not to be furious at yourself for losing your composure in front of Jay. âI donât know how you do it. Getting shot at and still running towards danger and not away.â
Jay seemed sheepish out of a sudden, no hint of his usual confidence and wit. âItâs my job. Just like I could never do what you do.â You felt yourself smile a little, his recognition making you feel a little less small in the hospital bed. âAnd sometimes there are- things that happen on this job that you donât just get over. We all have things weâre dealing with. Even I.â
Now you squeezed his hand, trying to show him you were there if he ever needed to talk to someone. Jay looked at you with gratitude in his eyes. He understood, even without words.
Silence settled in, but it didnât feel uncomfortable. There came no pressure to come up with something to say, no need to say anything at all and you could see it was the same for Jay, his thoughts drifting.
âSo Connor huh?â
You hadnât expected the question, drawing your brows together. âWhat?â
Jay licked his lips, inhaling. âI saw you two together. And then today-â, he trailed off, gazing to the side as he collected himself.
âI donât know what you saw-â, you began, but Jay raised a hand. âDonât deny it. Iâm not blind. Itâs obvious how much you care for each other.â
You started at him, rendered speechless as you tried to imagine what he could have seen. But it didnât matter, because Jay was- âYouâre jealous!â
He twisted in his chair, pulling his hand away. âIâm not jealousâ, he said, but you shook your head, grinning. âYes, you are.â
Annoyance flashed over his face. âI just donât like to be played with.â Your smile faded a little, but the relief you felt only grew as your slowly began to piece it all together.
âThatâs why you acted so cold towards me out of a sudden. You saw me and Connor and you thought-â You almost let out a laugh, only suppressing it as you took in Jayâs unamused expression.
âWell detective Halstead, Connor is my brother.â
You watched with delight how his face turned into confusion, surprise and then hope. âHeâs your brotherâ, he repeated in disbelief and you nodded. âI told you I came to Chicago, because I have family here.â
Jay let out a groan, the previous tension melting from his body as your words sank in. âBut Will-â, he paused, clearly rethinking something his brother had said to him, âthat bastard. When I saw you together I asked him about you and he warned me not to try anything, because of Connor. He never thought to mention once that heâs your brother.â
âYou asked Will about me?â
Jay narrowed his eyes playfully. âThatâs what youâre concerned about?â
You let out a laugh. âNot concerned, no. I just- you asked your brother about me.â
Jay raised his brow. âWhy is that so hard to believe? I mean, you asked him about me too.â
Your face flushed. âI did not!â
âYes, you did!â Jay chuckled, clearly enjoying your embarrassment. âWill told me about it. Itâs why he got so suspicious so fast when I brought you up.â
âAnd then he mentioned Connor and you figured-â âhe said that if I tried anything with you I would have to deal with Connor Rhodes. And itâs not like you two have the same last name.â
âDifferent momsâ, you explained and he sighed. âI should have just talked to you, but I got so mad and then I heard you two talk and I just- reacted.â
âYou should haveâ, you agreed, âbut I should have been more open with you too.â
âSo, letâs try again?â
His voice sounded so soft when he said it you felt yourself melt under the covers. âIf youâre ready to deal with Connor Rhodesâ, you pointed out playfully and Jay shrugged, his natural confidence back.
âAfter I helped save your life Iâm pretty sure Iâm well in with him. Which reminds me, you owe me three times now.â
You rolled your eyes, feeling the tiredness return to your body. Soon enough you would be drifting off again. âItâs twice, considering you cancelled our first date.â
Jay grinned. âFair enough. But Iâm taking you out once youâre out of here.â
You smiled. âIâm counting on it.â

DON'T BLAME ME || 5 || Jay Halstead x Thea Rhodes
Chapter Synopsis: It's time for the Rhodes monthly family dinner, and time for Jay to get a deeper understanding of his wife's relationship with his in-laws.
Chapter Warnings: Mentions of arson, kidnapping, infanticide; allusion to childhood trauma, suicide, cancer-related death; brief description of a vehicular accident; outright familial/parental pressure; portrayal of misogyny and misandry; Elli's speech still fluctuates. Read ahead at your own risk.
Author's Note: I'm starting specific chapter synopsis and warnings because I think you guys get the gist now.
Thea
With my glasses on the bridge of my nose, I examined the recent resumes my store manager sent up during my shift, as Elli watched TV in the living room. I wasn't entirely sure what Jay was up to, but I didn't want to be in his business when I had my own to mind.
"Mama, are we seeing Ganpa tomorrow?" Elli called through the slightly-open office door.
I checked the calendar on the corner of my desk. "Yes, principessa."
"Is Mr. Jay coming?"
"He is a Rhodes now, Elle."
Jay knocked on the doorframe, catching my attention. "This is the first I'm hearing about seeing your father." He leaned his forearm on the doorway, as I fixed my glasses. "I also didn't know you wear glasses."
"I wear contacts to work, and usually just wear them after work. And we only go to dinner once a monthâmy sister's idea." I stamped the resume, intending to send it to the store manager so she can call for a interview with a James Smitt. "I usually don't remember about dinner until Elli asks."
I noticed him shift slightly, before I continued. "You don't have to come. I only go to keep the peace with Claire, otherwise I'd rather burn alive than step foot on the property."
"And I thought my relationship with my dad was rough." Jay sat down on the sofa facing my desk.
"Usually he tells me everything I'm doing wrong with my life and that's why Connor left and all that BS. I timed the honeymoon on the last dinner so I had an excuse not to go for a month.
"But Elli sees her aunt every second month, so I have to go. I don't trust my father to not give her the same list of insecurities he gave me." I scoffed, signing off on whatever I was meant to be reading. I'd get a call from the old man if it had to come bite me in the ass.
Jay nodded along with what I was saying. He agreed to come, as long as he didn't pull the usual BS and to properly meet Claire. From what I knew, he and his younger brother weren't close anymore, so I presumed he wanted a good relationship with his sister-in-law.
"Do I get to meet your brother eventually?" I asked, sitting back in my chair. I didn't care if I met his father so much, but if my brother kept ignoring my calls, I at least wanted some sort of communicating relationship with my brother-in-law.
He shrugged. "We can fly to New York to see him if you want. Will and I don't talk much anymore, but I will if you want to get to know him; I won't stop you from knowing him."
"If we have kids, he'll have to be in their lives. My father's an only child and I never met my mother's family, so the kids should have their dad's uncle around."
"I'll introduce you to Mouse sometime then." Jay explained that 'Mouse' was a nickname for his best friend from his Ranger days. He and Mouse were the only ones to get out of their last deployment, and while Jay virtually went straight at it for CPD, Mouse's path wasn't so straight cut.
I wanted to tell him to offer a room for him with us, but I needed to meet him first. Sure, he was Jay's best friend and near-brother, but Elli was a priority and I'd have to clear it with Kelly beforehand too.
"If it's okay with you, I'd want him to be an uncle to our kids too."
I agreed. "I have a couple best friends from middle school I'd want as their aunts, and then 51 would be aunts and uncles and grandfathers to them too, so I think it's fair."
Elli had a village, and any kid born to a 51 firefighter did too. That village was the exact thing that drove me into the career, and I couldn't be prouder of it.
We discussed the Rhodes family dinner in length, before Elli stormed in and begged to go to the nearby park with the puppy. Scout was a more recent addition to the family, left alone in a house with his late owner when patrol officers found him. Jay called during my shift, telling me about this Dalmatian puppy with the biggest and cutest eyes, that Elli adored and was asking to keep.
So I agreed. As long as he wasn't left stationary alone again. It helped that he was a hit at 51.
I dressed Elli into her coat as Jay readying Scout and we walked down to the park for the two babies to play and run around while we talked.
#
Jay
The Rhodes dinner was in an hour, and Thea was in the next room finishing up with Elizabeth's outfit. I hadn't even seen hers yet, but when she said to be dressed up, I assumed she meant with the clothes she'd left on my bed after her shopping spree with Gabby and Shay earlier in the day.
"Mommy said you look nice, Mr. Jay!" Elizabeth waved her hands up at me as she stopped running right before she crashed into me.
"Thank you," I laughed, as I looked from the toddler to her mother.
Thea was in a black turtleneck sweater, topped with a black belt holding up slick, slim-checkered dress pants. At least, that was what she'd called very similar ones a day before.
"You look beautiful."
Thea waved me off bashfully, "it's the Rhodes genes. We naturally pull off our own product line." She picked up Elizabeth in one arm, and her handbag in the other smoothly. Thea hooked her car keys onto her ring finger, which slid down to clink against her wedding ring. I didn't even notice she was wearing it.
You were too busy checking her out. One voice scolded me in my head.
She's your wife, you're legally obligated to. It argued with itself.
It didn't take us too long to arrive at what Thea failed to mention was an entire Rhodes Family Estate, and security was easy enough to get through, so by the time we were in the lobby of the mansionâcould I call it that, or was it considered too small to be one to rich people?
"Miss Theodosia," one of the young maids curtsied as she and an older lady stopped at us. "And Mr. Halstead, and young Miss Elizabeth."
"Bridgette, it's Mrs. Theodosia." The older woman corrected sharply.
Bridgette curtsied quickly with an apology. "It's alright, Bridgette," Thea excused quickly, turning to the older maid. "It's fine, Margarethe."
"And Miss Elizabeth is greeted before Mr. Halstead-Rhodes. She is a Rhodes by blood, he isn't." Margarethe continued to scold Bridgette.
"Thea!" Claire didn't look much different to a month agoâgranted, it was a month agoâbut there was a genuine smile on her face as she hugged her sister. There was a five-year age gap between the sisters, and Thea kept her at arm's length, so they weren't as close as anyone outside close friends and family thought. "Nice to see you again, Jay."
I smiled. "You too, Claire. You look well."
"Oh please, I've done nothing different since the reception of your wedding, but thank you." She scooped Elizabeth into her arms, and headed into one of the rooms before the staircase. Thea nodded to follow, and I followed her instead as she talked with her sister. "It's nice seeing you again, Thea. Its been too long since I saw you; we really need to catch up between these dinners with Dad."
Thea sent me an exasperated glance already. "I've told you my schedule is busy, between the store and my actual job." They continued going back and forth about it as we sat at the dining table. Their father soon joined us.
Dinner was quiet, mostly Claire telling us what she was doing with her store and the plan for renovations in the next year. Mr. Rhodes kept looking at Thea, and she sent stares back at him before she would turn back to her sister.
After some silence, he spoke up. "So, Jason, what do your parents do?"
"My father's a construction manager."
"And your mother?" Mr. Rhodes asked before another mouthful. Thea sent him a quiet scold, probably a warning to lay off with the questions.
I didn't mind answering him so much, it was just the question. It was hard to talk about her, even so long after the fact. "We, uh, lost her a few years ago."
"Oh, I'm sorryâ" "'We'? So you have siblings?" Mr. Rhodes cut Claire off.
"A brother."
He nodded, a smile on his face. "Well, I'm sure Theodosia is glad to have a new brother, since her current one doesn't bother to call her."
"Father."
"What? Claire told me you haven't heard anything from him since the wedding, I was only stating a fact." Thea rolled her eyes at his response, as he kept talking. "The least you could do let me say and ask what I want, considering you married a construction manager's son."
"A detective. An especially good one in his own right, too." She snapped, then her demeanour changed. "Or, what, you'd rather I married one of your friends who would likely hit your baby girl if she ever dared to say no?"
Claire and I made eye contact at the tension, before Mr. Rhodes spoke again. "All I'm saying is that you could have at least married a man with an inspiring lineage and strong genes. Though, being able to lift some tons of concrete or knocking suspects to the ground would take some strength."
"Oh my god," Thea laughed, rolling her eyes. "You would've been fine with one of your friends abusing me if it meant I'd have good-looking children. Of course I'm just breeding stock to you, that's all you saw Mom as."
The table fell silent, excluding the show Elizabeth was watching on an iPad beside Claire.
"I loved your mother just fine, Theodosia."
"Clearly not enough to keep it in your pants though, right?"
Damn. What did I marry into?
I thought about Will and I kicking my father into the next decade if he cheated on Mom. And she lived until I was 26, so I could've kicked his ass at any age. Thea would have been under ten years old.
"That's enough," Mr. Rhodes chided.
Thea stood, walking around the table to her daughter. She handed Claire the iPad and picked Elizabeth into her arms. "That's right, it is. We'll be leaving now." She looked down at her sister, "I'll see you next week."
I followed her out to the car, and she buckled Elizabeth into her car seat. She remained silent as she drove down the driveway, glancing occasionally at her daughter in the backseat. "I'm sorry you didn't see Auntie for very long, baby."
"It's okay, Mama."
Thea kept her eyes on the road after that, and I didn't want to press into her family matters any more than she would mine. Brooke already told me enough for me to know that it was a sore subject with her.
"51 is all the family I need." Thea told me after Elizabeth fell asleep and she closed the door to her room. "And you and Elli, of course."
"You don't need to explain anything," I excused. She didn't ask me about my issues with my old man, and I didn't tell her.
She smiled at me briefly. "For all the crap I gave you when we initially met, you're not too bad."
"You're not so bad yourself."
Thea patted my shoulder and disappeared into her room. I stayed on the sofa a little longer, catching up with Brooke about her own dad.
#
I sat in the passenger seat, as Thea got out of the car to pass Elizabeth to her great-grandfather. Even after his father cheated and his parents split, Kelly was still close with his dad's parents and Thea was too.
"It helps that I don't really know my mom's parents. I know they loved her, but that's it." Thea explained, as she drove to the firehouse. She'd leave for work, and I'd drive to the district, and I'd pick her up in the morning after her shift. "Kelly wants Elli to spend as much time with his grandmother as much as we can give them."
His and Brooke's grandmother had dementia, from what Brooke had told me, and it was getting worse. She wouldn't even remember her son eventually, since Benny was barely in Chicago anymore, and when he was, Brooke noted that he didn't see his parents as much as he didn't see her.
Thea shrugged when I told her that. "Benny thinks Kelly was affected more by the cheating and divorce than she was. Kelly thinks Brooke was more affected since she was in her early teens and really looked up to Benny before it all happened."
"What do you think?"
"I think that the Severides have a load of issues that we can't solve," she looked at me pointedly. "As much as we might want to help them because they're our friends, you can't help a Severide. Not unless you're more important to them than breathing. Elli could probably do it, but she's just a kid."
"She doesn't need to solve her family issues so young." Thea gave me a nod of agreement when I understood. I knew she and Kelly were trying to raise her the opposite they wereâKelly, the older son needing to protect everyone, and Thea, the youngest daughter needing to prove herself to be seen. They didn't want their daughter to feel like that, and Thea didn't want her little girl turning out like her.
"I think if she can help it, Teddy will make sure Elle doesn't become a firefighter. Too many health risks and the like."
I admired her determination to protect her daughter. Of course, I didn't understand at the time what it was like to want to protect something so vulnerable from the world you know could destroy them.

CONNOR RHODES MASTERLIST
âAvery, donât run!â
You heard his voice first, before you saw them.
Your five year old running through the crowd to get to you, your husband slinging a bag over his shoulder, your younger daughter on his arm as he tried to stay as close as he could to Avery without losing sight of him.
âMom!â Avery threw himself into you, as you bent down to greet him with a smile.
You could hear Amelia wrestling with her father, just a few steps away. âDown! Down!â
It was just a second later that Amelia had tumbled towards you, unwilling to let her older brother get all the attention.
You laughed, as you scooped both of them into your embrace. âHey guys, I missed you too.â
Planting a kiss on the top of each of their heads, you stood finally so that Connor could give you a welcome home kiss. âHey you.â You said, with a smile.
You didnât know who was happier to have you home - your children, or your husband.
Youâd almost given the medical conference in Boston a miss. Youâd never been away from your children for so long ever since Avery had been born but Connor had almost booted you out of the house, reminding you that the promise heâd made when you got married and gotten pregnant with Avery was that you were first and foremost yourself, before you were a wife or mother.
But now, Connor looked like he could use a break from the kids.
âShould I be afraid of how the house looks like?â You asked him warily, as Connor took your luggage and Amelia got comfortable on your arm.
Connor shrugged but motioned his head towards the windows of the airport. âThink you should be more worried about that.â
The snow had started raining down upon Chicago about seconds after the plane had stopped on the runway so you were just really glad that youâd avoided the potential flight delay.
Connor reached for your hand, only to be intercepted by Avery and you bit back a laugh. Connor shook his head with a smile, before he draped an arm around your shoulders, smashing Avery in between the both of you as he giggled.
You pointed to one of the cafes in the arrival lounge. âCoffee?â You asked Connor.
Connor looked down at his son, before glancing back up at Amelia. âHot chocolate?â
Averyâs grin said it all, so Connor led his family of four towards the cafĂŠ, exchanging a look with you, which you read as easily as if you shared a brain.
Glad youâre home.

Soccer Practice
Summary: Jay picks up his sister after soccer practice, things donât go as planned.
Fandom: Chicago PD/Chicago Med
Characters: Sibling!Reader x Jay Halstead x Will Halstead (ft. Connor Rhodes)
Warnings: Asthma attack, medical talk
Word Count:Â 2137
Notes: So this is the first time Iâm posting anything Iâve ever written... please be gentle, hah! My medical knowledge is basic, I wrote with childhood asthma and a YouTube video as my guide on this one. Readerâs age is vague, but I imagine a youngest Halstead to be somewhere between 16-25. Happy reading!
_
You break out into a grin when you spot Jay in his truck, he had been waiting for your soccer practice to finish. It was with an under 25s community league that you had joined in the last few months, something to burn off steam in your off days from being a sous chef. Â
He leans over to push open the passenger door as you drop your kit bag in the back. Hopping in next to him as he hands you an ice cool bottle of water.Â
You give him a grateful âThanks!â in-between an exhale. Taking a moment to sip and get your breath measured.Â
Jayâs watching you with a small smile, but also with a waiting look, waiting for an affirmative from you.Â
âYou good?â His eyebrows raised in that inquisitive way he is prone to.
You think about your inhaler for a second, but rationalise it was natural to need to breathe a little more after vigorous exercise; besides you had made sure you kept on top of your preventative inhaler - no need to worry.
You smile again, things have been good lately. Youâve been able to see your brothers a lot more, work hadnât produced a demonic customer in a few days, the adrenaline of playing with your teammates gave you the serotonin you craved.
You pull the door shut and turn to him,Â
âIâm good, just a really intense session, ready to become a couch potato with you two knuckleheads. Thanks for the water, youâre a blessing.âÂ
Imitating a respectful bow, which earns a snort-laugh from Jay.
He gives you a nod that says, âI know, I'm a great big brotherâ, making you roll your eyes as he holds out a fist which you bump with yours. Giving an amused shake of the head, indulging his pretend ego was always funny.
You really loved your big brothers, both of them so supportive and interested in your life; it was something you desperately wanted and needed after the three of you had lost your mother. Pat, your dad, was just never the same afterwards - almost like looking at you was a grim and unwanted mirror image of his lost wife.Â
And now he had gone too.
But your brothers had been there to ensure you were well encouraged and looked after, even through their respective stints in the army and med school.
âSo, are you guys ready for a game soon?â Jay questioned, pulling the truck out of the parking lot and into the usual slow roll of evening traffic.
âYeah actually, the coach reckons Iâll be first pick for goalkeeper next game, kinda really cool... Thanks for coming to get me.â You ruffled his hair, something you knew he didnât like but tolerated from you all the same. On the other hand⌠Will got a different kind of reaction, more violent one might say.
He mimics pain, manoeuvring his head to shake off your sneak attack, going back to your answer. Still smiling.Â
âThatâs great, kiddo. Soccer will be your backup career then, huh?â He winks, focusing on traffic for a moment as the flow starts to pick up.
âYeah, Iâm definitely going pro, no doubt about it.â You jest, giggling with him at the thought of you being an international sports starâŚ
âBut think, who would cook for you and Will whilst Iâm going to stadiums all over the country? And who would just generally stop you both from getting into trouble?âÂ
Jay feigns horror, he and Will could fend for themselves well enough but there was something heartfelt and endearing about the meals youâd all share together, whenever your schedules lined up right of course. And even though they were both in very serious careers, you still felt compelled to protect and look out for them in your own ways.
âYouâre right, that would suck. Sorry, kid. I guess no soccer for you then. Weâd never survive without you.âÂ
âDamn right you wouldnât, heh.â You both continue joking and teasing each other as Jay gets you through the city towards his apartment. You and Will had been invited for a movie and Chinese takeout sleepover, a rare instance where none of you were overly busy and could spare the time.
...
It was the tail end of your journey when you felt a stirring in your chest, focusing on taking easy measured breaths, not wanting to worry Jay or bring attention to yourself. The background chatter of Bulls coverage on the radio covering up the sounds of your breathing. You could handle whatever this was⌠or at least thatâs what you told yourself. You would later scold your genetic Halstead stubbornness for how you handled this situation, but in the last 20 minutes of your journey you had zoned out completely; Jay not realising that anything else was happening - as you had your eyes closed. You were desperately trying to keep airflow going, pushing down the quelling nausea, he ended up assuming you were just a little zonked from soccer.
Pulling to a stop in his designated space, Jay spotted Will sitting on a bench outside the apartment complex, looking up from his phone as headlights illuminated him. Will gave you both a wave, frowning slightly when he realised you werenât even looking out the front window, head cast down. The engine cut and Jay hopped out, turning back to see you were yet to move - had you fallen that fast asleep? Will had a better direct sight of you and immediately got up from his spot on the bench, nodding towards your side of the truck to get Jay to look at you.Â
Jay opened your door, making you groan as you slumped in his direction, wheezing breaths now very much audible. Will was behind him, immediately swinging the back door open to find your bag and your inhaler.
âWoah, woah⌠hey, Y/N, can you hear me?â Jay kept a firm grip on you as he tried to push you back into an upright position, attempting to climb in next to you. He adjusted himself so you could lean against him, rubbing your back and sternum, trying to keep you alert to take as deep a breath as you could manageâŚÂ
âJ...ay⌠In...hale..â Your speech was mumbled, talking was already very difficult...
âYeah, itâs alright, kiddo. Willâs getting it. Just try and take a breath for me, youâre gonna be alright, thisâll be fixed soonâ
âY/N... Jay⌠itâs not here, do you have it?â Will wouldnât class his voice as panicked, but he was very much on edge as your sports bag revealed the sad reality that there was no inhaler in the car.
A pang of panic swept through your adrenaline-addled body, you suddenly got a flash of your past self picking up your bag to go and meet Jay, but someoneâs towel had been next to your stuff⌠where your inhaler had very well sat underneath, making you forget it was no longer in your bag.Â
âNo⌠no⌠socc-... left thereâŚâ You were getting light headed, every breath was painstaking, you felt anxious and delirious, mad that you had not checked your inhaler was packed away before you left the other side of town.
Will and Jay didnât think for a second longer, in unspoken synchronicity they managed to switch roles. Will snatched up his backpack and hopped in where Jay had been, Jay already backing up out of the space in a quick point turn. At any other time, being able to use the sirens and speed through traffic in Jayâs truck might have been an exhilarating experience for you and Will, but not now. Not when your lips were turning blue and your wheezes were far too spaced out for anybodyâs comfort.
...
It felt like an eternity but a brief journey saw Jay coming to an abrupt halt outside Medâs ED entrance, your brothers shifting you out of the car together. Itâs Will who hoists you into his arms, moving at speed and bypassing the receptionist straight into the main section of the ED, calling out to Maggie.Â
The charge nurse wastes no time in directing you to Trauma 2, alerting for Connor.
âDr Rhodes, we need you!â Connor spins round from a computer station, taking in the scene as heâs by Will and Jayâs side in a flash, taking you into the bay, already assessing.Â
Jay stands back letting the professionals work, worry etched into his features, arms folded tightly as he watches your limp body settle on the bed, body straining to get air in, sweat pouring off youâŚ
âSheâs been like this for at least 25 minutes, no medication en route, she left her inhaler at soccer practice. She was responsive at first, but...â Will scratches at his neck, feeling helpless as he takes a step back too, resting a hand on Jayâs shoulder as he lets his friend work on you.
Two nurses and Connor flurry to get an oxygen mask on you, hooking you up to a monitor as the trauma surgeon takes in the true grimness of your SATsâŚÂ
âI canâtâŚbreathe⌠I canâtâŚ.IâmâŚdieâŚâ Connor supports your back, reassuring you, Will and Jay get as close as they can, squeezing your legs gentlyâŚ
âYouâre not gonna die, honey, itâs okay, itâs going to passâŚâ Will knew that you couldnât help the panic, the lack of oxygen affecting your ability to think.
âConnorâs got this, kiddo. Weâre here, itâs alright. Hang in there.â Jay soothes softly, in your ocean of panic they still manage to calm you even the smallest bit.
âLetâs get an IV in, I donât think any mask is gonna cover anything right now, nothingâs getting through.âÂ
Connor rubs your sternum as Jay had done, looking to get you responsive again, moving to hold your hand as the nurse sets you up to push the IVâŚÂ
âY/N, itâs Connor Rhodes. Iâm gonna take care of this, sweetheart, but I need to know that youâre still with me, can you squeeze my hand?âÂ
It feels like youâre in the depths of a cave, every sound and surrounding seems so far away in darkness, each breath drawn out, you catch a glimpse of beeping, bright lights, a voice dipping in and out of your consciousnessâŚÂ
âConnor⌠Rhodes⌠sweetheart⌠squeeze my handâŚâ You realise that your brothers must have taken you to Med, and Connor was with you, asking for your help⌠squeeze his hand⌠squeezeâŚ
You find the energy to squeeze ever so slightly, but Connor will take it. He squeezes your hand again, smiling with reassurance at Will and Jay who are extremely relieved to see youâre still alert.
âGood, thatâs good. Weâre getting some medication going right now, Y/N. It should help open those lungs right up again.âÂ
You suddenly feel a tingling, like flutters of butterflies all over, the immense weight starts to lift, like youâve been allowed to resurface from your torturous submersion. Eyes finding the willpower to crack open, wincing at the brightness of your surroundings, but groaning softly at the sight of Connor, wanting to speakâŚ
The doctor smiles at you, soothing your arm gently,
âHey there⌠try not to move or speak, let the drugs do their work, you can restâŚWill and Jay are right here.â You wiggle your fingers, still wanting to move and speak regardless of what Connor just said, making him shake his head amused. The Halstead resilience was strong within you too, but you just couldnât stay awake. So tired from trying to stay alive.
He steps to the side to allow your brothers to approach closer, keeping an eye on the monitor from the sidelines. Once satisfied that the numbers are moving in the right direction Connor leaves your brothers to sit with you, offering to grab them some coffees and you some water.
Will and Jay are either side of the bed, both fussing over you with affection, so relieved to see the oxygen and IV working for you, letting you rest without effort. Your eyes blink slowly up at them, wanting so much to reassure them that youâre fine, to apologise for not being more careful, but they can sense all of those thoughts ruminating⌠hushing you softly,
Jay rubs his thumb on the back of your wrist, mindful of the equipmentâŚÂ
âHey, kiddo. Just take it easy, alright? Youâre okay, we just got worried is all. Get some sleep, we wonât be going anywhere.â
Will leans down to kiss your forehead,Â
âWhat he said, youâre okay, honey. Weâve got you. Weâll be here when you wake up.âÂ
You nod slowly, grateful for the presence of the two most important people in your life, your own deep breaths lulling you, eyes fluttering back shut as you fall into a more peaceful slumber.

You and Connor wrapping presents after a long day of surgery for your son and get onto a discussion of having another child
XMAS BINGO; DAY 2: Wrapping presents w/ Connor Rhodes
Pairings: Connor Rhodes x Fem!Reader
Featuring: Connor Rhodes, Y/n, Sons name
Summary: Y/n tells Connor they are having another kid.
Warnings: fluff, pregnancy things, errors I missed
w/c: 570
A/N: I know Iâm way behind on this Xmas bingo and I apologize. Work kind of drains me. i MIGHT HAVE CHANGED THIS REQUEST A BIT!
To say Connor and you were exhausted after a long day of back to back surgeries at work was an understatement. But that didn't stop either of you from wrapping presents for Connors/your three-year-old son.
Plus you had another surprise for him. You were going to wait until Christmas to tell him, but you couldn't wait any longer.
Connor was engrossed in wrapping a huge present of [sons name].
"Have you ever thought about having another child?" You asked out of the blue, once you came across the tiny baby boots you brought. As well as the piece of paper with the pregnancy results. You only found out today that you were pregnant.
Connor stopped putting tape on the corner of the wrapping paper he folded, looking up at you. He looked slightly taken aback by your question.
Face lightening up as he thought about the idea of having another child with you. The truth was he did think about it a lot. But both your work schedules were hectic and the both of you struggled to raise [sonâs name] the first few weeks. But eventually, with a lot of help from family, friends, and more stable times at work, it worked out.
âOf course, I want to have more kids with you, but if youâre not ready yet I won't pressure you into it, plus our work schedules get hectic, and I donât want you to feel pressured into having another baby just because I want another one,â Connor answered you.
You took a deep breath then let it out. Before saying what you were going to say, but Connor spoke again. More like babbled.
âThis hasnât got anything to do with that surgery we did today, where the husband left her after he found out his wife couldnât have kids, because I would never do that to you, I-â Connor rambled.
âIâm pregnant,â You blurted out. stopping Connor in mid-rant.
âWâŚwhat?â He asked in surprise, afraid he might have misheard you.
âI found out today I was pregnant, I wanted to wait till Christmas to tell you but I couldnât wait any longer, actually I wanted to tell you as soon as I found out but you had so many surgeries and I didnât want to distract you, I just couldnât keep it to myself any longer,â You spoke.
Connor quickly rushed over to you. Sitting down in front of you. Cupping the side of your face with both hands.
Eyes glistening with so much happiness. Tears of joy gathered in his eyes.
âYou have no idea how much I love you, we are going to have another baby,â He spoke. Leaning closer to you till his forehead against yours.
âYeah, we are going to have another baby,â You sniffled out. Smiling happily at him.
Instead of answering verbally, he kissed you. The kiss was soft, passionate and full of love.
He pulled his lips away from yours a minute later. Kissing your cheek. He let go of the side of your face. wrapping his arms around you and pulling you close to him. You quickly wrapped your arms around his neck. Letting out a giggle. Connor laughed happily. His heart filled with so much happiness. He couldnât wait to go through all the trimesters with you. see all the sonogram pictures.
âI love you so much,â He repeated. Making your heart swell every time he said itâŚ

Connor Rhodes x OC(Astrid Halstead)
Based on season 4 episode 20.
Summary: Connor's wife is 39 weeks pregnant and an ER attending. What happens when someone start shooting in the ER?
"Morning Maggie" I said as I entered the ER.
"Morning, Dr Rhodes! Feel up for a patient?" She asked smiling at me.
"Sure, I need something to pass the time and not think about peeing all the time" I reply laughing at my condition. Being 39 weeks pregnant and working in the ER makes it hard not to pee every 10 minutes.
"Treatment 4, here" she said, handing me the tablet.
"HI there! Lily right? I see here you're 38 weeks?"
"Yes"
"I'm dr Rhodes. 39 weeks" I said smiling at her, thinking that will cheer her up. "Family?"
"I'm her father, Joseph Cooper, this is Edie Thompson" the man replied
"I'm not part of the family-"
"She's adopting my baby" my patient said, clearing the situation.
"I see, well if your father and Edie wouldn't mind stepping outside, I'm going to do a pelvic exam, okay? Let me know if anything hurts"
She nodded her head while her father and Edie walk out. I checked her cervix and she was 2 cm dilated already, when I saw her wince in pain.
"Anything hurts?"
"I'm fine."
"Well you're 2 cm dilated already and by the looks of it you're also having contractions"
"Then make it stop!"
"I'm afraid I can't do that once the baby is full term, Lily."
"I don't care! I scheduled a c-section. I sleep, wake up and he's gone!"
I nodded head at her and before I could say anything, another person came in the room.
"Lily?"
"David you can't be here!"
I stepped outside to give them some privacy, but after only 5 minutes Maggie had to call security. I decided to go upstairs to talk to OB about her situation.
"Good news, Lily. The OB will schedule a c-section today. We'll get you up as soon as a bed clears. Excuse me"
After I excused myself, I went to check on April's patient, since Dr Choi had to take care of another.
As me and April were checking the boy, we heard yelling outside, but didn't payed any attention since probably it was the same man from before. That was until we heard gunshots and people yelling at each other.
April was checking what was going, while I was frantically trying to calm the little boy.
"April what's wrong?" I asked as soon as I saw her pale face.
"Was that a gunshot?!" The kid asked, scared out of his mind.
"Astrid...Dr Rhodes has his hand in someone's chest..and a gun pointed at him"
I'm sorry what? A gun? At Connor?
"Connor?" I almost yelled and went to go out and check on him, but April caught me before I walk out the door.
"HEY! Hey! Calm down! Stay put! Keep quiet, he doesn't know we're in here!" She whispered when suddenly the boy couldn't breath.
"Sats going down, he's not breathing"
I checked his lungs, looked like one of his lungs couldn't function properly.
"April, he needs a chest tube"
She handed everything I needed and managed to place the chest tube while she bagged him. We got to stabilize him for the moment.
"Astrid, your legs!"
I looked down and saw my scrubs wet. That could onlyean one thing. "My water broke." At this time I was hyperventilating, I was about to give birth, Connor was God knows where, a lunatic had a gun, Code Silver in the ER.
"HEY! Deep breaths! Everything is going to be fine, okay?"
After breathing with April, I started to calm down. Until I saw my brother Will, covering the windows with bedsheets. Will was here too?!
"WILL?!"
"Astrid? What the hell are you still doing here? You should've been outside by now!"
"April needed my help with her patient..but now my water broke"
"What? Now?!"
"Listen to me, don't tell Connor! I know he's here too, he has a patient with a GSW"
"HEY! What the hell are you doing? Who's there?" Shit! It was the shooter. Before anyone could say something, I saw Connor pushing his patient out and I hid behind the curtains so he couldn't see. That was the last thing he needed right now. I breathed out a long puff of air, mostly relieved he got to sent the person to the OR, but the first contraction hit me already.
"HEY you! Move!" He shouted at Will, but he didn't move. He was looking at me, not knowing what to do. The shooter came inside and forcefully grabbed my arm. I yelped in pain and fear, while April and Will started shouting at him to let me go.
"If you don't shut up, I'll shoot her!"
"Alright, I'll do everything you need, just don't hurt my baby" I said and put a hand on my belly.
"My girlfriend needs a c-section and that doctor is the only one who can. Convince him!" He pushed towards treatment 2 and I realized that Connor's dad got there earlier. Fuck, this got complicated by the minute.
"D-Dr Rhodes?" I asked as soon as he pushed me inside, while holding the gun to my head. It came out barely audible, but Maggie heard me. As soon as she turned around and saw me, she went pale.
"Connor, turned around slowly" she said to my husband. He raised his hands and turned around slowly, but as soon as he saw me, he dropped the paddles that he still held.
"Astrid?!"
"Connor, you have to do a c-section!"
"I'm not doing anything until he let's you and my father go!" He yelled and I jumped a little, never seeing him this angry.
"Operate on Lily or I'll kill her right here!"
Before I could say anything, Maggie noticed my legs.
"Connor her legs"
When he looked down he could see that my scrubs were still wet.
"Listen, I'm gonna help Lily, but you have to let my wife go and let me move my father to the OR"
"Okay, okay" The shooter pushed me into Maggie and she quickly got a hold of me.
"Hey, babe? Listen to me, you'll be fine, okay? Maggie will help until I finish and then I'll come back, okay?"
"Okay, Okay" I breathed out and yelled as I felt another contraction.
"Astrid, hey! Let's get to on the bed and see what's going on"
She checked my cervix and I could see she was trying to keep calm for me.
"Whats wrong, Maggie?!"
"Nothing, it's fine. You're 8 cm dilated and you'll have to start pushing soon"
"What? No. No, I'm not doing this without Connor"
"I understand, but you have to. It won't be long, okay? I promise, Astrid."
Half an hour later, Maggie propped my legs up and said I was fully dilated.
"Maggie I can't do this!"
"Listen to me, you can and you will, okay?" She said and then I saw a familiar face behind her.
"Hey, what's going on here? Connor sent me to check on you. He's almost done there" Will said and closed the door behind him.
"I'm not going to give birth with my brother in here!"
"Astrid, I'm a doctor. Maggie will need help and besides..I promis, if you poop I will not make fun of you"
"Wha- Poop? Maggie am I going to poop?!"
"No, no! That could happen, but not all woman poop during birth, so it's okay. You're fine, but you need to start pushing"
"AAHHH! HE'S NOT GONNA TOUCH ME AGAIN AFTER THIS" I yelled in pain after pushing for 10 minutes.
"This is fun to watch" Will said laughing.
"WILL, IF YOU DON'T SHUT UP, I WILL BUTTHEAD YOU"
"I'm here, I'm here" Connor said rushing inside.
"Thank God you're here, but if you do this to me again, I will totally kill you, Rhodes"
"I know , I know. I love you, you're doing great"
"Astrid I need you push hard with your next contraction, okay? I can see the baby's head" Maggie said encouraging me.
"Cone on, baby, you're doing great, just push. It's almost over "
Between Connor's voice, my yelling and Maggie's instructions, we heard a tiny cry and everything stopped.
"Congrats you two, you have a beautiful baby boy" Maggie said putting the tiny baby on my chest.
"It's a boy?" I said crying.
"Dr Rhodes will you cut the cord?" She asked Connor, and that was the first time his surgeon hands were shaking.
After me and baby Rhides were cleaned, Connor sat with us on the bed. "He's so little" he said while playing with baby's hand.
"Didn't felt little coming out" I said laughing
"Hey, can I see my nephew now?" Will asked, only his head visible behind the door.
"Come here, Will"
"Hey sis? You really did pooped" I Gasped. I did what now?
"Seriously Halstead?! You couldn't shut up?" Connor was lecturing him.
"You saw too?"
"It's fine babe, woman poop all the time"
"It's not that! It's the fact that you two saw! I hate you both!"
We all started laughing. Connor and Will took turns holding the baby while waiting for out other friends to come visit. Maybe a good thing came out, after all this mess.

I have been loving the POTS series as another girl who has it I always felt alone and that no one understood it. I was always gaslit by doctors saying itâs anxiety etc. đĽş
I always LOVE Rhodes as well. I would love an imagine of reader having an episode at home with Connor. 𼺠like they are dating and like others Halstead brothers đĽşâ¤ď¸ thank you darlingâ¤ď¸I hope you are well â¤ď¸
â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸
In Sickness and in Health
Summary: Y/N has a POTS episode at home, and Connor calls her brothers, Will and Jay, to help when her heart rate wonât stabilize. Though Y/N is reluctant to worry them, the brothers reassure her and make it clear theyâll always be there for her.
Y/N sat curled up on the couch, a blanket draped over her legs as she flipped absentmindedly through a book. Connor was in the kitchen, humming softly as he prepared dinner. The faint aroma of pasta wafted through the air, a comforting smell that normally would have made her smile. But tonight, something felt⌠off.
Her chest felt tight, her heart pounding faster than usual. She took a deep breath, trying to shake the dizziness creeping in. Maybe it was just dehydration. Grabbing the glass of water Connor had left for her, she took a few sips and hoped it would pass.
But it didnât.
âConnorâŚâ her voice trembled, barely louder than a whisper.
He appeared almost instantly, concern etched into his face as he crouched in front of her. âWhatâs wrong, sweetheart?â
She clutched her chest, her breathing shallow. âItâs⌠itâs happening again. My heartâs racing, and I feel like Iâm going to pass out.â
Connorâs medical instincts kicked in immediately. He didnât panicâhe never didâbut there was a sharpness to his movements as he assessed her. He gently helped her lie down on the couch, elevating her legs with a cushion.
âOkay, stay with me,â he said, his tone calm but firm. âLetâs slow your breathing. In through your nose, out through your mouth.â
She tried to follow his instructions, but the dizziness only worsened. âConnor⌠I-I canâtâŚâ
He reached for the pulse oximeter he always kept in the living room drawer, slipping it onto her finger. His jaw tightened as he saw her heart rate spiking. âYouâre okay, Y/N. Iâve got you. Just focus on my voice.â
He retrieved a glass of water with an electrolyte tablet dissolved in it and held it to her lips. âSip this. Slowly.â
She obeyed, though her hands trembled as she held the glass. The fear in her eyes broke his heart.
The Decision
For the next fifteen minutes, Connor worked to stabilize her, but her heart rate remained stubbornly high, and her breathing was still labored. She was pale and visibly drained. He knew she needed more help.
âSweetheart,â he said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face, âI think I need to call Will and Jay.â
Her eyes widened in alarm. âNo⌠please, Connor. Donât. I donât want them to worry.â
âTheyâll want to know,â he argued gently. âAnd honestly, I could use their help right now. They love youâtheyâll understand.â
Tears pricked at her eyes, but she gave a small nod, too exhausted to argue further. âOkay⌠just donât let them freak out.â
âI promise,â he said, pressing a kiss to her forehead before stepping away to make the calls.
The Halstead Brothers Arrive
Jay arrived first, having bolted from the district the moment Connor called. His face was tight with worry as he rushed into the apartment. âSweetheart,â he said, dropping to his knees beside the couch. âWhat happened?â
She gave him a weak smile, her voice barely audible. âJust⌠my heart being dramatic.â
Jay glanced at Connor, his protective instincts in overdrive. âIs she okay?â
âSheâll be fine,â Connor assured him. âHer heart rateâs been stubborn, but Iâve been managing it. I didnât want to risk her being alone if it got worse.â
Will arrived moments later, a medical bag slung over his shoulder. His eyes scanned his sister, taking in her pale complexion and shallow breaths. âHoney,â he murmured, kneeling on her other side. âHow bad is it?â
âIâm okay,â she insisted, though her voice wavered. âReally.â
Connor gave Will a rundown of her symptoms and what heâd already done. The two of them worked together seamlessly, Connor monitoring her vitals while Will administered a small dose of her prescribed beta-blocker to help bring her heart rate down.
Reassurance
As her heart rate finally started to stabilize, Y/N let out a shaky breath of relief. Jay sat at her feet, his hand resting gently on her ankle, while Will perched on the arm of the couch, watching her closely.
âIâm sorry for scaring you,â she whispered, her eyes darting between her brothers and Connor.
âDonât apologize,â Jay said firmly. âYouâre our sister. You donât have to go through this alone.â
Will nodded, his expression softening. âHoney, weâd rather know when somethingâs wrong than find out later. Youâre family. Thatâs what weâre here for.â
Connor squeezed her hand, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. âTheyâre right. You donât have to hide this from us. We love youâepisodes and all.â
Her eyes filled with tears, but this time, they were tears of gratitude. âThank you,â she whispered, her voice breaking.
âAlways, sweetheart,â Jay said, his tone gentle.
âAlways,â Will echoed, leaning down to kiss her forehead.
Aftercare
Once her episode had fully passed, Jay stayed behind to keep her company while Connor and Will worked on cleaning up. Jay kept the mood light, cracking jokes to make her laugh, while Connor prepared tea and a light snack for her.
âNext time,â Connor said as he handed her the tea, âweâre not waiting so long to call them.â
Y/N smiled softly, leaning against his shoulder. âOkay. I promise.â
Her brothers stayed until she fell asleep, each of them silently vowing to always be there for herâno matter what.
Hunni you are so so welcome, i totally get where you coming from with being gaslit by the doctors and just anyone itâs exhausting and mentally draining currently having to fight with my doctors about a cyst :/. But Iâm so glad this little corner of the world helps and with that you love this imagine and that it brings some much needed comfort đŤśđť

CHICAGO MED | Two Halves Make A Whole
⎠Prologue - Setting the Scene âŽ
[Chapter List] [Part One]
(Starting Season One Episode One)
(This series will follow the series, starting 1x01 and roughly sticking to the timeline and events of the Chicago Med with some divergence from canon to incorporate the original character and events Iâve included to involve them.)
Chicago Med (One Chicago) : Connor Rhodes x Original Female Character
Warnings: Swearing, adult themes, usual hospital/emergency department blood and gore.
That morning was supposed to be easy. Thereâs a list of things to do, items to have prepared and packed the night before, scrubs sized and in your new locker ready and waiting. She liked the order of it in their otherwise chaotic lives, and her fiancĂŠe, even though heâd laugh at her incessant need to organise well in advance, couldnât deny that this time it was helpful.
Itâs why, when the train he was catching that morning derailed, he knew he had surgical gauze and bandages in his backpack and was already working on patients when the paramedics arrived. Hell, he could practically hear her jibing as he tied off a tourniquet for the middle-aged woman he was currently trying to ensure didnât bleed out from a nicked artery.
âI wonât need this stuff, you know they do have gauze at a hospital.â
âYeees and the last time I said that, I ended up stuck in a pile up for six hours tearing my second favourite shirt to pieces. I still miss that shirt..â there was a wistful sigh, and an amused laugh between the two of them, before sheâd continued âSave the shirt. Carry the bandages.â
Connor couldnât help but chuckle at the memory, earning a raised brow from the womanâs husband, gripping onto his wifeâs hand with earnest concern. With an apologetic half smile, he nodded and moved on.
All the while, Mia, much to her fiancĂŠes chagrin about the painful beeping of the dawn alarm, had arrived early to the emergency department at Gaffney morning. Having already spoken to Goodwin, had the full guided tour by a remarkably well informed and equally witty nurse named Maggie, and changed into her burgundy scrubs and organised the items in her locker according to size and usefulness, she felt prepared for the inevitable storm that would likely soon consume them.
An auburn haired doctor, Halstead, as heâd been introduced to her as, and a heavily pregnant yet desperately sad, dark haired Doctor Manning had quickly become co-workers she had found rapour with, remarking on their shared love of an author that sheâd caught Doctor Halstead reading as she met him in the doctors lounge earlier, and the absolute tragedy that was drinking coffee without milk. Sheâd chosen to stand behind her fellow female doctor when the great unveiling of the new ED had begun, hoping to catch some tips on which nurses were less likely to bite her head off and any regular patients that she should watch out for when their pagers set off in a chorus of chirps.
She hated the sound of those things.
Not for a lack of care of what they preceded, naturally if she was apathetic to the pain of others she would have never become a doctor in the first place. No, she simply hated the sound because, in her mind, it felt taunting.
Patients she could handle; find the injuries, assess the history, treat the symptoms and causes, stitch them back together⌠An elegant dance between science and compassion. It was the families she couldnât bare. The questions, the accusations of how she wasnât doing all she could, the ever shifting emotions she had to compensate for during every update.
Shaking her head, Mia snapped herself from her internal monologue of âfuck pagersâ, and grabbed several pairs of surgical gloves to shove into her white-coat pockets and a stethoscope that she draped around her neck, and began to prepare for the onslaught of, from what sheâd gathered from Maggie and April, a train derailment only a few miles away.
Looking down at her feet for only a moment, the same pair of lucky sneakers she had owned since she began her medical residency, what felt like a lifetime ago, battered and their black shade closer to grey now, she took a deep breath. Straightening up, she pushed the strands of loose hair that had already unravelled from her ponytail back behind her ears before she snapped on the first pair of gloves, and turned to the ED doors.

đ Connor Rhodes X Reader! "See David, that is mommy doing her surgery."
You smiled at Connor with your son on his chest, the baby carrier supporting David as Connor watched you. An hour later you came outside and lifted him up, blowing raspberries into his belly as he giggled.
"Have fun being a stalker?"
"Only when it's for my wife." Connor wrapped his arm around you both as you went to the lounge to finish paperwork and show off your son.

I Only Have Eyes For You
Fandom: Chicago Med / One Chicago
Character/s: Connor Rhodes x Reader,
Warning/s: none
Word Count: 3,162
Request:Â Hi there, can I get an imagine for reader x Connor Rhodes. Lightly based upon 01x03 Fallback where Connor treats on one of his father's employees and his father tried to take him off the case. So like the reader and Connor are married (got married during their residency) and the father flirts with reader who also works at med not knowing that's his son's wife as he didn't think someone like Connor could snag a girl like the reader. The ending is up to you. Thank you x
âMaybe you should talk to him,â you suggested, putting your hand on your husband, Connorâs, shoulder as he stared distantly into his locker, his mind clearly elsewhere.Â
âI donât want to talk to him Y/N, Iâve barely spoken to him in years,â Connor sighed, slamming his locker closed and turning to face you. He hadnât expect to see his dad today, heading into Med behind an ambulance basically demanding to speak to Miss Goodwin and his son at once. Connor had been in surgery at the start of shift so he hadnât actually come face to face with the man yet, but it was only a matter of time.
âWell now might be your chance, he is in the ED afterall,â you reminded him and he rubbed his face with his hands. It had been a long surgery, starting off the last shift of a very long week, and you knew the last thing your husband wanted was to talk to his father, but maybe he needed to.
âHeâs downstairs because one of his employees got hurt on the job and heâs trying to do damage control before a lawsuit is filed, he isnât here to see me,â Connor all but snapped, his face softening when he realised and squeezing your hand apologetically. There had been some kind of mishap at one of his stores from what you could gather, and one of Corneliusâ workers had found himself practically crushed under a bit of the structure that wasnât as up to code as it should be.
âI get that, really Connor I do, Iâm just saying that while heâs here, maybe you should talk to him, even if itâs just to say your piece,â you tried, knowing that Connor still had a lot of baggage surrounding his father, baggage that had been putting a bit of a strain on your marriage, or more specifically, any discussion of having children. Getting things off of his chest might be the only way for him to move forward, you reasoned.
âI have nothing to say to him, Y/N, heâs the parent, not me, it shouldnât be on me to be the bigger person,â Connor replied, and he was right, but damn if the Rhodes men werenât the most stubborn men youâd ever met.
âBut you are the bigger person, the better person-â you began, knowing that Connor was ten times the man his father was, and maybe it was about time Cornelius Rhodes saw that for himself, but you were starting to realise that you were crossing a line as Connor interrupted you.
âY/N, the last time I tried to reach out to my father he decided heâd rather go on a business trip than attend his own sonâs wedding,â he said, the bitter undertones very clear as you remembered how crushed heâd been. No matter how bad their relationship was, and even if he wouldnât admit it, you knew Connor still loved his father, and for him to not show up to his own wedding had broken his heart. âBaby heâs never even met you, and thatâs that on him, heâs made his priorities perfecrly clear.â he continued, cupping your face in his hands.
âOkay, okay,â you nodded, realising you werenât getting anywhere with this conversation, âdo you want me to drop it?â It was what you always asked each other when it seemed like you were going to have an argument, or whether you werenât sure if youâd crossed a line in a conversation, you tried to respect each others boundaries as much as possible.Â
âPlease, I know youâre trying to help but my relationship with my father is basically unsalvageable, and Iâm moving forward,â he smiled but it didnât reach his eyes, he was trying hard to make you believe him but you both knew you really didnât, this wasnât the kind of thing you just moved forward from.
âIf youâre sure, he wonât be around forever,â you gave it one last try before letting it go for now, telling yourself youâd broach the subject again at a later date.
âI know, and I am,â he said, giving you a quick kiss before pulling away and grabbing his stethescope off of the table next to you, âthank you, though,â he added.
âFor what?â You asked finally closing your own locker.
âFor being so very you,â he smiled, a genuine smile this time as he looked back to you, âI love you.â
âI love you too,â you replied, kissing his again as your phone vibrated in your pocket. Stepping back you fished it out, seeing a text from Will. âOh thatâs me, Will wants me in three to help with Mr Harris,â you explained to Connor as you both headed out the door towards the ED.
âMy fatherâs guy?â Connor realised, opening the door for you and letting you out first as you checked over the message; apparently Cornelius was demanding a second opinion, clearly not satisfied by Willâs, but you decided not to tell Connor that right now.
âYeah thatâs the one,â you nodded, slipping the phone back into your pocket before he could see the rest of the text as you noticed Maggie signalling for you to hurry it along, that couldnât be good.
âGood luck, youâre gonna need it,â Connor noted Maggieâs impatient gestures as you picked up the pace.
âYouâre all the luck I need,â you joked, winking at him as you parted ways, Dr Latham needed him upstairs in 5 for a consult, a fact which he was more than happy with since he was supposed to be working the ED all day.
âOoh cheesy, go on get out of here,â Connor laughed as you waved your goodbyes, heading to three.Â
Maggie met you half way and handed you Mr Harrisâ chart, looking irritated.
âEverything okay?â You asked, noting the angry voices you could now hear coming from the room to your right, the curtains not providing much in the way of sound proofing, not that you thought Cornelius cared much.
âHow Connor turned out the way he did with a father like that is beyond me,â Maggie told you quietly as you quickly flipped through the chart, âheâs been demanding this, that and the other since he got here, and now he thinks Dr Halsteadâs not telling Mr Harris all his option because he just wants to âextort him for more moneyâ,â she mimicked in a hushed tone as you rolled you eyes, itâs not like he couldnât afford it anyway, you thought, but there was something about having more money that made some people think they were so damn entitled...
Putting on your best cordial smile you pulled back the curtain and entered, the men stopping in their heated conversation as you did, frozen on some discussion about cost. Will did his best to hide his relieved look when he saw you and Cornelius grumbled in frustration, completely unaware he was standing face to face with his daughter-in-law for the first time.
âEverything okay in here?â You asked, looking between the two men on their feet and the tired, slightly embarrassed, looking man in the hospital bed.Â
âTerrific sweetheart,â Cornelius retorted sarcastically and you internally rolled your eyes. Externally, you kept your features schooled and looked to the patient in the bed.
âHi Mr Harris, my name is Doctor Y/L/N,â you told him, having kept your last name when youâd married Connor, a fact you were pretty glad about right now. You offered your hand and he shook it gratefully.
âPleasure,â he said as you stepped back, facing Cornelius Rhodes as he rubbed his temple before looking to you, taking you in for the first time as he straightened his posture and cleared his throat.
âCornelius Rhodes, itâs lovely to meet you,â he offered his hand and you shook it, the way he was looking at you making your skin crawl a little as he finally let go. âI was just discussing with your collegue over here the best treatment for my man here, and we seem to be having a disagreement,â the way his demeanor had changed in your presence was alarming, and Will was clearly taken aback by it too, heâd gone from demanding to charming in the blink of an eye.
âI see, well from reading Mr Harrisâ chart itâs clear that there are only two option available, the impact seems to have done some internal damage that, while it might heal on its own over time, will most likely require surgery,â you explained in your perfected doctor voice as Will threw you a grateful glance. Cornelius clenched his jaw as he tried to maintain his own facade, pretending to mull over your words even though you knew Will would have said basically the same thing, and that Cornelius had already made up his mind.Â
âSurgery really is the best option Mr Harris,â Will told the patient, but instead of replying he looked back to Cornelius, the man who would be paying for either option no doubt. The surgery would be expensive, you knew that, and it grated you to know that the fate of this manâs life possibly rested on the greed of Cornelius Rhodes. Could Connor talk some sense into him? You mused to yourself as he began to answer.
âI understand your concern,â he said finally, addressing you alone, a far cry from the accusations of greed heâd thrown at Will before you arrived, âbut that kind of surgery is not only expensive, but the recovery time would put him out of work, and he wouldnât want that.â You hid your grimace as Mr Harris nodded, clearly feeling like he had to agree.
âI have deadlines coming up,â he spoke up as Cornelius gestured to him as if to say, see, there you have it, settled, as you did your best to maintain your friendly face.Â
âI understand where youâre coming from Mr Rhodes,â you lied, regreting ever trying to get Connor to patch things up with this vile, self-serving man. He didnât deserve Connor for a son. âBut if we leave it and it gets worse, the surgery will be much more invasive and expensive further down the line, not to mention the high risk and potential complications,â Mr Harris paled a little, but still waited for Cornelius to answer.Â
Seriously? He could sue this man and yet he was still scared of him, the man probably had no means of paying for the court bills that would require anyway, he needed Corneliusâ paychecks to keep a roof over his head. And he was making decisions about his life like he was a god damn asset and not a person.
âWell, that would be unfortunate,â Cornelius pondered and Will looked like he was close to losing it. It was no secret he prioritised his patients over all else, even their own wishes sometimes, and it was also no secret heâd never liked Cornelius Rhodes.Â
âMr Rhodes-â Mr Harris voiced up but he was shushed, the other man still thinking. You didnât know whether you or Will were closer to punching the man, Mr Harris clearly wanting to have the surgery now in fear of more severe future complications. If Cornelius wasnât such an arrogant-
âAlright, if you thinking it will save money in the future- and more important of course Josephâs well-being, then I suppose we could do the surgery,â he decided and Mr Harris sighed in relief. Cornelius smiled smugly, like heâd done something so generous, it made you sick to your stomach.Â
You consciously twisted the wedding ring on your finger as Will fetched the paperwork and soon Mr Harris was being wheeled off to wait for his surgery in a room upstairs, clearing the bay in the ED for the next patient. Will was more than happy to take the next person through the doors as you finalised the paperwork with Maggie, scheduling in his surgery in the system.Â
Connor texted you then as Cornelius was practically stalking towards you at the desks. He was letting you know that he was finished with Dr Latham and had thought about what youâd said, and maybe it was a good idea to talk to his father before he left. Heâd be coming down any minute, but before you could reply Cornelius had reached you at the desks, a predatory look in his eyes that set off your fight or flight response.Â
âDr Y/LN,â he grinned and you returned a polite and professional smile as he invaded your personal space, looking you up and down in a way that was so not okay, even if you werenât his sonâs wife. âThank you for your help in there, your input was very... refreshing.â
âOf course, I was just doing my job, Iâm glad Mr Harris is able to get the treatment he needs,â you replied tightly, realising that this conversation was far from over as he continued talking.
âIt was the least I could you,â he said, seeming to take your statement as some kind of thanks or compliment to his âgenerosityâ. âSay, how about you and me grab a coffee in the cafeteria so you can explain more about how this procedure works, on me of course. If youâre busy now, maybe after you finish work?â As he finished talking he inched closer to you, eyeing you suggestively.Â
Was he making a pass at you? Was this actually happening right now? You blinked in shock and it took you a second for your brain to process what was happening before you could answer him.
âMr Rhodes, Iâm flatteredâ you began and he grinned, like he already had it figured out that you were going to say yes even though you were far from actually flattered, âand while I would be happy to discuss your employeeâs treatment with you in a professional manner, Iâm... Iâm married,â you explained, flashing your ring at him, the ring that his son had put on your finger.
âWell I donât see him around anywhere,â Cornelius winked at you and you took an instinctive step back, but he either didnât notice or didnât care, probably the latter if you were honest. âHeâd never know.â
âOh Iâm certain he would,â a voice said from behind you and you turned to see Connor heading towards you both, anger clear on his face as he looked from you to his father.Â
âAnd whyâs that?â Cornelius asked defiantly, practically looking down his nose at his son, clearly not getting the hint from what he had said about who your husband was.
âBecause I am her husband,â Connor said definitely, standing next to your side as you relaxed, feeling instantly better in his presence. Cornelius balked a little, he really had had no idea who you were this entire time. It took him a second to regain his composure but when he did, instead of opting for the apology youâd expect from any normal person, he did the exact opposite, actually defending his slimy actions.
âHow was I supposed to know that?â He huffed like he wasnât invited to your wedding, when heâd made the decision to not come of his own accord. Connor put a protective hand on the small of your back, aware you were drawing a bit of attention as April had paused her typing on the computer.
âWell, dad, maybe if youâd come to our wedding, or our anniversary, or any of my birthdays, you would have known that Y/Nâs been my wife for the past three and a half years,â Connorâs voice wasnât raised but you could tell he was getting more and more aggitated by this encounter. He wouldnât have liked anyone making a move on his wife, let alone his own father.
Cornelius had the nerve to chuckle at that, âhonestly Iâm just surprised a boy like you could wrangle a woman like this,â he said as you clenched your jaw, so many parts of that sentence rubbing you the wrong was. You could tell Connor felt the same, his stance very defensive as you replied.
"What is that supposed to mean?â You demanded before Connor could speak, Corneliusâ eyes snapping to you like heâd forgotten you were an actual person and not just an object to fight over. âWhat about me and Connor is so surprising to you?â
âHonestly, you could do better.â he said matter-of-factly and you rolled your eyes, any appearance of a professional facade gone as you faced your father-in-law.
Now it was Connorâs turn to laugh, but it was a dry laugh as he said: âand what, you think your âbetterâ?â Cornelius shrugged, the look on his face telling you that that was in fact what he meant. Connor shook his head in disbelief, the first time he was seeing his father in a long time and all of his reservations and fears were being entirely justified as he stood before the two of you.
It was time to end this, you decided, folding your arms and squaring up to Cornelius. âBetter? The man whoâd rather save money than a manâs life, who thinks itâs appropriate to not only hit on a woman while sheâs at work, but to blatantly tell her to... cheat on her husband when she tries to politely tell you sheâs not interested. Connorâs a good man, a much much better man than you, inspite of the fact that your raised him, and he doesnât owe you another second of his time, neither of us do.â You took a breath as both Rhodes men blinked at you in shock. âNow, Mr Rhodes if youâll excuse us we actually have jobs to be doing, Iâd be happy to have somebody escort you to where you can wait,â you finished, seeing April grin out the corner of you eye as Cornelius got a little flustered, clearly not used to anyone, especially women you reckoned, putting him in his place.Â
âIâm had enough of trying to reach out to you, I felt like I still had something to prove to you, like it was on me to mend what was broken between us. But youâre not worth it dad, youâre just not worth it. Weâre done here, stay away from me, and definitely stay away from my wife,â Connor told his father, gesturing with his head for security to come show him to the waiting room.Â
âOh this is far from over,â Cornelius raised his voice, pointing his finger at his son as security reached you. But Connor didnât waiver, clear for the first time as he just looked at his father, shaking his head before turning to walk away. Everything that needed to be said had been said, and he was finally ready to walk away from his father, quite literally in this case as you went to follow your husband.
This wound would never go away entirely, but now, maybe, you really could move forward.Â

Saving Him
Summary: Youâre a trauma surgeon at Chicago Med and while visiting your father in jail Alvin was stabbed. You then attempt to save his life not just for you but for your husband Adam Ruzek and the rest of intelligence.
Pairing: Reader x Adam Ruzek, Alvin Olinsky, Intelligence, Med
Request: Yes
Warning/s: Blood
âDad I donât give a damn you arenât staying at mine when you get paroleâ You fought smiling to Alvin Olinsky and his wife Meredith. You had gotten a phone call from the guard Jacob Keys saying your dad was looking at parole. You came down on your break and you will still wearing your scrubs even though you were just out of surgery.Â
âPlease baby girlâÂ
âDad I donât care what you said you still murdered that little boyâ You stood up and went to walk outÂ
âDr Ruzek we need youâ Jacob Keys saidÂ
âWhatâs up?âÂ
âInmates been stabbed multiple timesâÂ
âLet me out I have a trauma bag in my carâÂ
âCome onâ You and Keys ran out to your car that was really Adamâs unmarked police car. You grabbed your trauma bag and followed Keys back inside. You followed Keys back to the cells.Â
âAlvinâ You crouched down next to him and grabbed your trauma bag opening it and grabbing some pressure dressings and taped them down.Â
âTell Meredith I love herâÂ
âHey Alvin you can tell her yourself and you can also tell Adam heâs an annoying son of a bitchâ You joked.Â
âHe isâÂ
âOh I know he is. Jacob whats the ETA on that amboâÂ
â2 minutesâ You nodded pulling the pressure dressing off.Â
âSomeone give me their hands. Press on this stab wound not too hard but hard enough to stop the bleeding Iâm gonna attempt to clamp it off here looks like it hit the liver and spleenâ You said grabbing a pair of gloves and pulling them on. You did what you needed to do as the ambulance arrived. Sylvie and Gabby came running over.Â
âWhat we got?âÂ
âMultiple stab wounds to the lower abdomen Iâve stopped the bleeding the best I could here with a trauma bag. Looks like itâs pierced the liver and spleen but I need to get him to the ORâÂ
âOk let me get an IV started while you finish whatever youâre doingâ You nodded applying a pressure dressing before sliding a backboard under Alvin.Â
âOn my count 1.2.3.â Gabby said and you all lifted him onto the gurney
âJacob tell my dad not to contact me and contact Adam for meâÂ
âIâll get someone else to do it Iâm coming with you. I know Alvin isnât a bad manâ You nodded and helped Gabby and Sylvie push the gurney out to the ambo. You jumped in the back next to Gabby and Jacob.Â
âIâll get Adam to pick up his own carâ you said changing the pressure dressing. You got to med sooner than you thought. You jumped outÂ
âMaggie PD is in the house I need to OR. Alvin Olinsky 52 years stab wounds to the lower abdomen stopped the bleeding best I could I need Rhodes and an OR. Intelligence will be here tell them they can wait upstairs in the waiting roomâ You saidÂ
âRhodes with Ruzek in the ORâ You and Connor pushed Alvin up to the OR. Two hours later yous walked out tired as hell and you shift ended an hour ago.Â
âHow is he?â Hank asked as you pulled your surgical cap off.Â
âHeâs alive he was stabbed multiple times in the stomach but it pierced the liver and spleen but Connor and I stopped the bleeding and fixed the liver and spleen.â You explained as Adam hugged you tight.Â
âThank youâ He whispered in your ear
âItâs my job baby. Hank he was asking for youâ You said walking forward slightly to get Adam to sit before getting hugs from the rest of intelligence. You turned to Adam
âCome with meâ You took his hand and walked through to the break room
âIs everything ok?â You nodded
âI was gonna do this another time but I figured you could do with some more good newsâÂ
âWhat is it?âÂ
âWere gonna have a babyâ You said as you saw Adamâs face light up. He kissed your cheek before running out of the breakroom. You followed him out as he hugged each member of intelligence one by one. You laughed at himÂ
âWhat the hell is going on?â Hailey askedÂ
âIâm gonna be a dadâ He said as you continued to laugh leaning against the doorframe.Â
