Sir Ronald Ross had just returned from an expedition to Sierra Leone. The British doctor had been leading efforts to tackle the malaria that so often killed English colonists in the country, and in December 1899 he gave a lecture to the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce [...]. [H]e argued that "in the coming century, the success of imperialism will depend largely upon success with the microscope."

[A]s [...] Diane Nelson explains: The creation of transportation infrastructure such as canals and railroads, the deployment of armies, and the clearing of ground to plant tropical products all had to confront [...] microbial resistance. The French, British, and US raced to find a cure for malaria [...]. One French colonial official complained in 1908: “fever and dysentery are the ‘generals’ that defend hot countries against our incursions and prevent us from replacing the aborigines that we have to make use of.” [...] [T]ropical medicine was assigned the role of a “counterinsurgent field.” [...] [T]he discovery of mosquitoes as malaria and yellow fever carriers reawakened long-cherished plans such as the construction of the Panama Canal (1904-1914) [...]. In 1916, the director of the US Bureau of Entomology and longtime general secretary of the American Association for the Advancement of Science rejoiced at this success as “an object lesson for the sanitarians of the world” - it demonstrated “that it is possible for the white race to live healthfully in the tropics.” [...] The [...] measures to combat dangerous diseases always had the collateral benefit of social pacification. In 1918, [G.V.], president of the Rockefeller Foundation, candidly declared: “For purposes of placating primitive and suspicious peoples, medicine has some decided advantages over machine guns." The construction of the Panama Canal [...] advanced the military expansion of the United States in the Caribbean. The US occupation of the Canal Zone had already brought racist Jim Crow laws [to Panama] [...]. Besides the [...] expansion of vice squads and prophylaxis stations, during the night women were picked up all over the city [by US authorities] and forcibly tested for [...] diseases [...] [and] they were detained in something between a prison and hospital for up to six months [...] [as] women in Panama were becoming objects of surveillance [...].

Richard P. Strong [had been] recently appointed director of Harvard’s new Department of Tropical Medicine [...]. In 1914 [the same year of the Canal's completion], just one year after the creation of Harvard’s Department of Tropical Medicine, Strong took on an additional assignment that cemented the ties between his department and American business interests abroad. As newly appointed director of the Laboratories of the Hospitals and of Research Work of United Fruit Company, he set sail in July 1914 to United Fruit plantations in Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama. […] As a shareholder in two British rubber plantations, [...] Strong approached Harvey Firestone, chief executive of the tire and rubber-processing conglomerate that bore his name, in December 1925 with a proposal [...]. Firestone had negotiated tentative agreements in 1925 with the Liberian government for [...] a 99-year concession to optionally lease up to a million acres of Liberian land for rubber plantations. [...]
[I]nfluenced by the recommendations and financial backing of Harvard alumni such as Philippine governor Gen. William Cameron Forbes [the Philippines were under US military occupation] and patrons such as Edward Atkins, who were making their wealth in the banana and sugarcane industries, Harvard hired Strong, then head of the Philippine Bureau of Science’s Biological Laboratory [where he fatally infected unknowing test subject prisoners with bubonic plague], and personal physician to Forbes, to establish the second Department of Tropical Medicine in the United States [...]. Strong and Forbes both left Manila [Philippines] for Boston in 1913. [...] Forbes [US military governor of occupied Philippines] became an overseer to Harvard University and a director of United Fruit Company, the agricultural products marketing conglomerate best known for its extensive holdings of banana plantations throughout Central America. […] In 1912 United Fruit controlled over 300,000 acres of land in the tropics [...] and a ready supply of [...] samples taken from the company’s hospitals and surrounding plantations, Strong boasted that no “tropical school of medicine in the world … had such an asset. [...] It is something of a victory [...]. We could not for a million dollars procure such advantages.” Over the next two decades, he established a research funding model reliant on the medical and biological services the Harvard department could provide US-based multinational firms in enhancing their overseas production and trade in coffee, bananas, rubber, oil, and other tropical commodities [...] as they transformed landscapes across the globe.

[On] February 20, 1915, [...] [t]o signal the opening of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE), [...] [t]he fair did not officially commence [...] until President Wilson [...] pressed a golden key linked to an aerial tower [...] whose radio waves sparked the top of the Tower of Jewels, tripped a galvanometer, [...] swinging open the doors of the Palace of Machinery, where a massive diesel engine started to rotate. [...] [W]ith lavish festivities [...] nineteen million people has passed through the PPIE's turnstiles. [...] As one of the many promotional pamphlets declared, "California marks the limit of the geographical progress of civilization. For unnumbered centuries the course of empire has been steadily to the west." [...] One subject that received an enormous amount of time and space was [...] the areas of race betterment and tropical medicine. Indeed, the fair's official poster, the "Thirteenth Labor of Hercules," [the construction of the Panama Canal] symbolized the intertwined significance of these two concerns [...]. [I]n the 1910s public health and eugenics crusaders alike moved with little or no friction between [...] [calls] for classification of human intelligence, for immigration restriction, for the promotion of the sterilization and segregation of the "unfit," [...]. It was during this [...] moment, [...] that California's burgeoning eugenicist movement coalesced [...]. At meetings convened during the PPIE, a heterogenous group of sanitary experts, [...] medical superintendents, psychologists, [...] and anthropologists established a social network that would influence eugenics on the national level in the years to come. [...]
In his address titled "The Physician as Pioneer," the president-elect of the American Academy of Medicine, Dr. Woods Hutchinson, credited the colonization of the Mississippi Valley to the discovery of quinine [...] and then told his audience that for progress to proceed apace in the current "age of the insect," the stringent sanitary regime imposed and perfected by Gorgas in the Canal Zone was the sine qua non. [...]
Blue also took part in the conference of the American Society for Tropical Medicine, which Gorgas had cofounded five years after the annexation of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Invoking the narrative of medico-military conquest [...], [t]he scientific skill of the United States was also touted at the Pan-American Medical Congress, where its president, Dr. Charles L. Reed, delivered a lengthy address praising the hemispheric security ensured by the 1823 Monroe Doctrine and "the combined genius of American medical scientists [...]" in quelling tropical diseases, above all yellow fever, in the Canal Zone. [...] [A]s Reed's lecture ultimately disclosed, his understanding of Pan-American medical progress was based [...] on the enlightened effects of "Aryan blood" in American lands. [...] [T]he week after the PPIE ended, Pierce was ordered to Laredo, Texas, to investigate several incidents of typhus fever on the border [...]. Pierce was instrumental in fusing tropical medicine and race betterment [...] guided by more than a decade of experience in [...] sanitation in Panama [...]. [I]n August 1915, Stanford's chancellor, David Starr Jordan [...] and Pierce were the guests of honor at a luncheon hosted by the Race Betterment Foundation. [...] [At the PPIE] [t]he Race Betterment booth [...] exhibit [...] won a bronze medal for "illustrating evidences and causes of race degeneration and methods and agencies of race betterment," [and] made eugenics a daily feature of the PPIE. [...] [T]he American Genetics Association's Eugenics Section convened [...] [and] talks were delivered on the intersection of eugenics and sociology, [...] the need for broadened sterilization laws, and the medical inspection of immigrants [...]. Moreover, the PPIE fostered the cross-fertilization of tropical medicine and race betterment at a critical moment of transition in modern medicine in American society.

The Hound of the Baskervilles: Three Broken Threads
Hat tip to @myemuisemo for another excellent post that covers much of what I was planning together:
Data protection was not really a thing back in 1889. However, paper hotel registers would be something filled in by the front desk staff, not the guest. They would contain details of extra charges incurred as well, all stuff generally done by computer, but you can still buy paper copies today. Particularly for the Indian market, where less than half the population have Internet access. These registers are generally mandatory and in some countries, the data will still be passed to the police when it concerns newly arrived foreigners. That's why they ask for your passport.
Newcastle upon Tyne, the one people generally talk about as opposed to Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, was at the centre of a major coal mining area in North-East England, the Durham and Northumberland coalfields being in close proximity. The industry was still employing children - boys as young as 12 could work in mines - and was still a pretty dangerous, not to mention unhealthy industry.
The British economy was heavily reliant on coal, especially the newly built electric power stations. While the railways had a big coal trade for internal transport for domestic purposes, boats also played a big role, either going via canal or down the East Coast of Great Britain to the London Docks. This route would become vulnerable to German attack in the World Wars, particularly in the second war from fast torpedo boats known to the British as "E-boats"; the East Coast convoys are a lesser-known part of the naval war, with Patrick Troughton having served with Coastal Force Command.
The Mayor of Gloucester, like most civic mayors in England, is the chair of the council, elected to a one-year term by their fellow councillors. The current holder is Conservative councillor Lorraine Campbell. It's a mostly ceremonial role involving going to various events while wearing a red cloak and a big hat:
Gloucester's Deputy Mayor is called the Sheriff of Gloucester. There is still a Sheriff of Nottingham, by the way.
The Anglophone Canadian accent was historically noticeably different to an American one and of course had its own varieties. They've gotten closer over the decades, especially due to television.
Sir Henry would have limited luggage space on the ship over, so three pairs of boots would be reasonable. He'd have to ship over anything else at further cost, so it could be cheaper to buy new in London.
Deliveries of telegrams that weren't in the immediate area of the office cost extra. Bradshaw's Guide for Tourists in Great Britain and Ireland would state the nearest telegraph office for a town, as the 1866 edition demonstrates:
Sir Charles' estate was worth around £80m in today's money, but that would not even get him onto The Sunday Times Rich List, which starts at £350m (Sir Lewis Hamilton, i.e. the F1 driver). It tops out with Gopichand Hinduja and his family at an estimated £37.2 billion, whose conglomerate is many focussed on India, but also are the biggest shareholders in US chemical company Quaker Houghton.
Westmoreland was a historical county in Northern England; it was absorbed into Cumbria in 1974, but its area became part of the Westmoreland and Furness unitary authority in 2023.
"Entailed" means that Sir Charles has stipulated in a legal document that the Baskerville estate would have to pass to Sir Henry's heir intact. This was a feudal era practice that has now been abolished in most jurisdictions, with limited remaining use in England and Wales. Simply put Sir Henry is not allowed to sell the house or the land, even part of it. He can do what he likes with the cash and probably the chattels, the movable property like the candlesticks and the toasting forks.
This page covers it in relation to the works of Jane Austen with relevant spoilers:
Borough is another name for the area of Southwark. It got a Tube station in 1890, when the City and South London Railway opened, now the Bank branch of the Northern line. It also is famous for Borough Market, then a wholesale food market under cover of buildings from the 1850s. Today it is a retail market for specialty food; kind of like a farmers' market.
In 1888, the 10:30 from Paddington would get to Exeter at 15:35, a journey of five hours. @myemuisemo provides route maps. I would add at this point, GWR services to SW England went via Bristol, adding a lot of time to the journey, while the LSWR route from Waterloo was a lot more direct. Wags dubbed the former "the Great Way Round". The construction of two cut-off lines allowed the GWR to go via Westbury and Castle Cary.
I will cover the modern day condition of the route in my Chapter 6 post.
The GWR still had some broad-gauge track at 2,140 mm(7 ft 1⁄4 in) left that Brunel had favoured, but this would be finally eliminated in 1892.
Finally, Holmes is referencing the sport of fencing when he learns the cabbie has been given his name. The foil is the lightest of the three swords used in competitive fencing, such as the Olympics.
In an age before electronic fencing equipment, point scoring relied on the eyesight of the umpire... and the honesty of the competitions.
I was in my fencing club at university. I can't say I was that great. I preferred the epee, which doesn't have the priority rules...

Billionaire on pace to become world’s first trillionaire by 2027, report says
Informa Connect Academy’s finding about the boss of electric carmaker Tesla, private rocket company SpaceX and social media platform X (formerly Twitter) stems from the fact that Musk’s wealth has been growing at an average annual rate of 110%. He was also the world’s richest person, with $251bn, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, as the academy’s 2024 Trillion Dollar Club report began circulating Friday.
The academy’s analysis suggested business conglomerate founder Gautam Adani of India would become the second to achieve trillionaire status. That would reportedly happen in 2028 if his annual growth rate remains at 123%.
Jensen Huang, the chief executive officer of the tech firm Nvidia, and Prajogo Pangestu, the Indonesian energy and mining mogul, could also become trillionaires in 2028 if their trajectories hold. Bernard Arnault, the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton boss and the world’s third-richest person with about $200bn, is on track to eclipse a trillion dollars in 2030 – the same year as Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta.

LAILA MAIN LAILA AISI HOON LAILA HAR KOI CHAHE MUHJSE MILNA AKELA
☾♔; March 17, 2024 ☾♔; 4:56pm ☾♔; sotd: What Jhumka? (from Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani) ☾♔; cotd: Rani Chatterjee ☾♔; Thistle Grove Academy ☾♔; Storyboard/Important Connections
𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞: lyrics from "Laila Main Laila"
I've always sucked at making storyboard type sets, but YIKES. lol, whatever.
【 𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖 】
Laila is an heiress of 𝓡𝓪𝓲𝓬𝓱𝓪𝓷𝓭 Industries, an Indian multinational conglomerate founded by Laila's great-grandfather, Thakur Raj Raichand, in the early 1950's after Partition. While the company has long since gone public, it is still majority owned by the Raichand Family, and they run every aspect of it. Now Mumbai (Bombay) based, the Raichand's originate from the state of Rajasthan where the family once owned a fairly large piece of land that was sold off when Laila's grandfather was young. After succeeding in Bombay, the land was repurchased, as well as much of the surrounding area and a large palace named Chandshah Haveli was constructed in the Indo-Saracenic architecture style.
Karshvar is the seven-story Raichand estate in Mumbai, located on Altamount Road (also known as Billionaires’ Row), the name of the estate comes from Zoroastrian mythology. The Avesta, the primary collection of religious texts in Zoroastrianism, describes seven Karshwar, climbs or zones, that organize the world into seven circles superimposed on top of one another, separated by waters, mountains, and forests. Until the completion of the Ambani’s Antilia, Karshvar was the most expensive private residence in the country, possibly the entire region, and yes, it is more expensive than their literal palace in Rajasthan (as an FYI, Antilia is the most expensive private residence in the world, as of 2014, might’ve been surpassed by now). However, Karshvar still claims the most ground floor square footage of the road.
The Raichand's are a relatively traditional family, certainly in western standards, though they are considered very progressive amongst other Desi's, having a very religiously mixed and accepting family, and very matriarchal family. Women have long held authoritative power over the family, though that has passed matrimonially, with the wife of each successive head of the family gaining that authority. Overall the Raichands are a Hindu family, however, their spouses have come from all over India and beyond, of varied faiths and sects, due to this, the Raichand’s also have large celebrations for holidays of multiple religions, obviously Hinduism, as well as Sikhism, Jainism, and Islam. Their biggest events are Diwali, Durga Puja, Vaisakhi, Navratri, Karva Chauth, Eid, the First and Last Iftars of Ramadan, and Holi. They also have a fairly large, but private, family only event for Raksha Bandhan.
Laila is not close to her maternal family at all, neither is her mother. She's asked about them a couple times before, but her mother doesn't have the best expression when talking about her family, so Laila stopped asking. If they want to know them, they can find them, it's not Laila's problem. She’s not even completely sure if her mom’s original last name is even Burakgazi, her parents have changed the story a few times, but have more or less stayed consistent that they met while her father was working. At one point the story was almost identical to the plot of the film Bang Bang!, wherein a RAW agent supposedly stole the Koor-i-noor diamond back from the British, something involving multi-national terrorists, and her mom being a bank teller caught in the middle after her dad hijacked her blind date, none of which made any sense, but it was a fun story.

Because of this she is often the target for schmoozing campaigns (though it doesn’t necessarily work, a lot of Laila’s judgey and stubborn personality comes from her).

Rashmi eventually married Kat’s paternal grandfather, and the couple moved to London for his work. A couple years younger than the Emirati trio, Kat lived most of her life in the UK, until her parents company moved them to their Dubai offices, and she built a closer relationship with Kiran and joined her friend group. This is literally for me because I’m losing track of all the notable Families affiliated with the Raichands and their histories. I keep expanding my family tree, and forgetting things I don’t put in the bio sections. Laila took keeping things in the family too literally, by her I mean me, but literally everyone mentioned up there is bound in her family tree through one method or another, even got Is in there cause I decided that her half-brother is Laila’s eventual endgame. Far in the future, cause he a lot older (like red flag), so he doesn’t show up now, it’ll be creepy if he does.
Desai’s, friendship dates back to before even Yogesh, the Desai’s were heavily involved in establishing Raichand Industries, and outside of the Raichand family, own the most shares of RaiI, in the current generation, Vijay (grandson of Yogesh) and Payal (granddaughter of Dushant) are engaged. Yogesh once dated Dushant’s sister with semi-serious marriage talks, but forgot all of that after meeting Mohini, so that was awkward and dramatic. Lol Dadaji is a slut.
Khan & Kapoor filmi fam’s, friendship from the Veer/Vikrant/Riya generation, very thinly veiled references to bollywood things for my enjoyment. This Khan and Kapoor branch are also connected to each other, I think they are cousins by descent, while the Raichand connection is through a marriage, oh wait, the Raichand connection is even further away, cause it’s through the Dhanraj’s marriage! So at most, Vijay’s something, something cousins, but not Laila, Zoya, or Yash’s.
Singhania, frienship from Veer/Vikrant/Riya generation, but working relationship from Yogesh’s era

The writer, O. Dave Allen is a community activist and political commentator
MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica, January 25, 2022 - We the Jamaican people are at risk of becoming slaves again. We are a country with 95% African people. It’s a fact that the majority of the African population is at the bottom of the economic pyramid while the 5% at the apex are the minorities who control the economy. We all know that the economy is the superstructure that determines everything else, we also know that those who control the economy rules the country. It is time for majority rule.
When the Chinese were commandeering the local retail and distributive business, it was of little concern to the traditional moneyed class. Their long held sense of security is now threatened by the fact that the Chinese have cornered the retail business and have accumulated untold millions, buttressed by unaccountable billions of dollars of dubious origin with an insatiable and avaricious appetite of the tiger spreading their tentacles devouring all that is in its path.
There is an insidious war that is being waged by the Chinese business interest that will undermine all and every local Jamaican business. We are not here dealing with the compliant Chinese shopkeepers of yesteryears; but a contrived network, led by the Chinese State to dominate and control the Jamaica economy with Montego Bay as the entry point, bolstered by the powerful Association of Chinese Enterprises in Jamaica (ACEJ), a non-profit organization.
This mega conglomerate is akin to the Dutch East India Company (The Dutch East India Company historically a military-political-economic complex rather than a pure trading or shipping company).
Can you imagine the consequences when the Chinese would have established their own bank and formal financial intermediaries?
Recently China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), was awarded the Government of Jamaica funded US$274.5-million Montego Bay Perimeter Road Project, which includes the rehabilitation of Barnett Street and West Green Avenue, as well as the construction of the Long Hill bypass and a drainage study of the Montego Bay bypass area is also to be conducted under the project.
This catalysis project strengthens the presence of the Chinese in Jamaica and serves as beachhead in Montego Bay to supplant the hegemony of the United States of America in Jamaica and make a mockery of the Monroe Doctrine as they pursue endless war at distant shores.
The Montego Bay perimeter road is funded by the Jamaican taxpayers and as such there is no justifiable reason why this contract should have been awarded to any overseas contractors.
The government has a duty not only to provide physical infrastructure but also to effectively use our taxpayer’s money to build our social capital and to strengthen the capacity of our human resource.
We have developers, engineers, contractors and consultants with more than adequate competencies to develop the Montego Bay Development Road. Our local professionals have demonstrated the capacity to execute and manage major projects as exemplified by the work carried out by Jamaican professionals on the Northern Coastal Highway.
In the recent Andrew Holness cabinet reshuffle the Hon. Homer Davis was appointed to head the Office of the Prime Minister West. This is no accident, but a strategic move to ensure the orderly integration of the Chinese into western Jamaica.
Minister Davis and Former Mayor of the City of Montego Bay enjoys more than cordial relationship with the Montego Bay Chinese community with numerous visits to China during his tenure in office. With the support of the Chinese Dr. Horace Chang remains the most powerful member of the Holness’ Cabinet.
While Bishop O’Neil Russell, and others may be disappointed in the reappointment of Dr. Horace Chang as Minister of National Security, they missed the bigger picture that Chang has consolidated his power base with the appointment of his Deputy General Secretary and his protégé Homer Davis as head of OPM West and the ostensible Emissary of the Chinese community, the new power base in Montego Bay.
To those who sing praises of Homer’s appointment, are living in a fool’s paradise. It is not about you, it is about the Chinese work permits and citizenship, building approvals, the clearance of their goods at the wharf and importantly their security. Homer Davis as a conduit who will ensure that the JLP is fully funded to win the next elections.
There will be a seismic shift in business activities back to the old city of Montego Bay. This regeneration started with Harmony Park, the building out of the downtown Montego Bay Waterfront District and soon the regentrification of the urban centre.
Finally, Who gave the Chinese the permit to dump the wetland and mangrove swamp at Reading to construct the multi story, multi family, high end, Chinese enclave. According to the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation the “project will open new areas to the south of Montego Bay for development and expansion, giving access to lands for housing development.”
But will our local developers; Gore, Moe, Azan, WICHON be beneficiaries of the development opportunities.
China's Silk Road to Montego Bay, “Turn Them Back” ! says O Dave Allen (wiredja.com)

Businesses close to Modi and his political circle have done especially well. The most prominent examples are Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries and the Adani Group, conglomerates that reach into numerous areas of Indian life. Their combined market power has grown gigantic in recent years: The flagship stocks of each company are worth about six times more than they were when Modi became prime minister. Some smaller companies have been the target of high-profile raids by tax-enforcement agencies. "If you’re not the two A’s” — Adani or Ambani — it can be treacherous to navigate India’s regulatory byways, said Arvind Subramanian, an economist at Brown University who served under Modi’s government as chief economic adviser from 2014 to 2018. "Domestic investors feel a little bit vulnerable,” he added.

I'm tired of this, a lil whitewashing is still too much hollywood is suddenly caring about talent and ability whenever it comes to accurately casting poc characters. They are allergic to casting fully ethic people. I hate it cause I love the show so much but how is this better than what m night did? I am older and have higher standards than i did as a kid until people stop feeding into pandering and giving in whenever there's a few characters appropriately casted they will keep poc's as the side characters villains and continue to cast lighter skinned people as the heros and darker more ethnic people as the villain. Like netflix always takes a huge L when it comes to that, they only cast correct when they cater to specific audiences and usually there is some objectification they are becoming the new disney for me. Urban on the weekends suburbs monday through through friday. Which is cool but why adapt something based on ancient asia if you don't want to cast as accurate as possible. It's not too hard they just have an agenda to push. I've given up on conglomerate companies ever doing the right thing it will always be a catch. Nothing I can do but I can just start ignoring it cause they aren't trying as hard as they say they are. Flashback to everyone bullying the girl who wanted to be katara, its colorism and its ugly and being that this is the second time this has happened I feel like maybe it was the intentiom all along to create a series built of asian mythology to have a cast full of lighter skinned characters play the heros and the most ethic people in the cast are the villains...like I'm greatful for the message of the show but I'm saddened there was never any intention to bring people who it belongs to into the fold. The intention should be for young children all around the world to look and see that darker skinned heros exist all over the world and don't exist only in one racial group. I'm glad they are confronting the gender imbalance present in the show and taking the focus off romance though. Netflix makes too much money for this though. Hollywood makes too much money for this. It's also about colonialsm but I'm guessing they will try and tone that message down because most of hollywood money is ran off of colonialism.
M night shamalan casting the fire nation colonist as indian when india was colonized by great britan makes it clear whoever is funding these movies don't want kids seeing citizens of countries that actually actively colonized various parts of the world as villains. But they will happily cast imperialist china and japan as the villain something they have always been happy to do to take the heat off of them. Which seems to be why the fire nation actors are clearly ethinically asian while the heros are ambigious looking.
Dune is another movie doing a very similar thing but thats so borijg I don't even care to talk about it.
Its very strategic and personally I love blind casting but its clear its only blind when its convient.

Company Property
I've bee listening to this again thinking how perfectly it describes RDA and how it most likely works. And how it treats the people who we saw dying en masse working for it. Even of they only hire the worst I doubt they signed up to be slaughtered to finance RDA expansion.
The song is about a different hypercapitalist entiry abusing people but I suppose one evil space conglomerate is just like another. After all they are all in the race to the bottom line with the likes of the East India Company.
youtube
This is exactly how the RDA is getting people to come to Pandora and die defending corporate assets and revenue streams
Welcome to space. What were you expecting? It’s a dangerous place. Thank you for investing.
Monsters that can eat you in one bite and locals with arrows as long as you. I hope you enjoy being cannon fodder.
Just ten short years to a new frontier Snooze as you cruise and you’ll wake up here! You’ve been trapped in that ship for an awful long time So perhaps you have simply forgot what you signed
Wake up from cryo to be reminded that this isn't a job you can quit. Just think of the numbers of RDA soldier we saw dying in the A2 movie. Wonder if they knew what was waiting for them when they sign up.
Honestly? Did you not read the colony policy? That defines you as company property? That waivers your say in autonomy? The conglomerate’s got you in lock and key
You belong to the company now. I suppose this is especially true for Recoms. They never owned themselves. They wouldn't be able to afford to.
We put the dollar back into idolatry If you’re upset you can rent an apology We are a family forged in bureaucracy No I in ‘team’ but there’s con in ‘economy’
Con in economy. Dollar in idolatry.
Were you expecting adventure? Were you hoping for fun? My friend you’re indentured And pleasure’s exempt from your tenure
...
If you’d rather drop dead that’s fine But you know that dropping down dead bears a fine So you do your job, I’ll do mine I gotta meet a six foot deep bottom line
And not even death frees you from your debt. RDA even offers you the opportunity to work for it after death. If you're useful.
...
The secrets of the universe and all the worlds to be explored But our dreams are back on earth and now the work is our reward
Maybe you bought into the ideals of exploring other words and saving Earth?
And you’ll be grateful for seats at the table Though it dips at one end and the bench is unstable You may waste your days but at least you were able To pay off your grave since we leased you your cradle
But the company will never play fair. Please die at the end of your depreciation period. Thank you.
Be faithful and pray we’ll repay what you invest Behave as you slave for humanity’s interest On account that you’re all on account and we’re quickly amounting humanity’s interest
So they can get fair return on their investment. It's for humanity's interest (paid out to shareholders only)

Day Three
After such a wonderful day exploring Mumbai, we all woke up to grab some breakfast at the hotel before our first official class. At 10 am, we began our class going over our schedule in India - where we are going, when our classes are, etc.
Prof. showing us a map of India including where we've been.
Then, we had the amazing Kurush Dalal, the Director of the School of Archaeology at Instucen Trust, come in and give us a lecture on Indian Mythology. He began by giving us an overview of the religions in India along with the common Gods/stories in each religion. From there, he switched it up and told us about how religion was used as an advertising technique. From unpacking certain controversies to successes by companies, Prof. Kurush was a true storyteller and helped us to understand India's religion a lot better!
Kurush Dalal beginning his lecture on Indian Mythology. Following our lecture, we had about an hour to freshen up and grab some lunch before leaving to Landor and Fitch - the largest brand transformation company in the world! We hopped in 4 Ubers to head over to their amazing office where they welcomed us in with lots of food - McDonalds sandwiches, samosas, and jalebi.
Ronita Mukherjee introducing Landor and Fitch!
Ronita Mukherjee gave us an extremely in-depth presentation of what Landor and Fitch has done previously such as their work for FedEx, Pepsi, Coke, etc. After signing our NDAs, we dived into our assignments - the case that we are going to present to Landor and Fitch in approximately 10 days. And yes, they are actual cases that they are currently working on! After brainstorming ideas for our project, we headed back to the hotel. Here is us waiting for the ubers along with a very cute plant we saw!
After getting back to the hotel, we all either ran to our rooms or worked in the lobby to get started on our presentation on the major family conglomerates in India or the case study on Snacko. For dinner, Snehaa and I (Sonia) ordered room service so that we could spend the next couple hours working on our presentation Now, it's time to sleep so that we can be ready for our Shopper's Stop visit in the morning. See you tomorrow!
