I know that, had she lived, this little squirt would have been glued to her side. she probably knew Paz, even distantly, due to them both being pilots. she might have even known the kid as a tiny little infant.

and then the war is over and... no one wants him. no one wants to take care of him. it's seen as a chore. but she can't help, even if she never considered herself to be a motherly type, not with the cards she had previously been dealt, but to go see the little thing in whatever makeshift nursery they she set up for him. to place her finger in his little hand and feel him squeeze it with all his tiny might.

she doesn't have to be his mom, she tells herself, just his fun tia, or maybe his badass big sister.

she sings to him little Spanish lullabies she remembers from her own childhood, and dances with him in the nursery when she manages to scrape up some old audio files. calls him by the middle name he was given, cause Javier had a better ring than Miles (she wonders who decided on that. can't decide wish irks her more). seeing that boy smile every time she entered the room, arms reaching for her, it makes her day.

as he gets bigger, starting to walk, holding her hand, then running, running away, her heart briefly fluttering with melancholy, before he runs right back into her arms. he starts to speak, and tries his best to say her name, with all his might, before giving up and calling her di-di.

he follows her around. she puts little braids and beads and feathers in her hair. he clings to her legs. she takes him flying.

he inherits her fire. Quaritch can't be found in his face or his eyes. all anyone can see is Trudy.

she'd raise hell for her baby. brother. boy. son.

I used to always hide what I like and dislike. never share my opinions. try to align myself with other people to make them happy. try to like what they like or pretend to. but I decided to stop doing that at some point because it was exhausting. it did work for a while. it made people happy and like me more for s short time. but never lasted. especially since I can't keel.up the charade forever. so was kind of pointless in the end....

but then sometimes i remember why I did it. so many times that I don't do it it leads to bad interactions that really affect me negatively. sometimes when I state my opinion or likes/dislikes and it contrasts with someone else, it makes them lash out at me????? they act like i'm trying to personally attack them??? even if i'm not saying it directly to them or it has nothing to do with them?? they get so offended or upset and start lecturing me or getting really angry in my replies or dms. and i'm internally like. can you shut up and leave me alone lmao. but of course I hate conflict and stuff so I go back into "pleasing" mode and try to "explain" and find an explanation that calms them the fuck down because I don't want to deal with their offended asses. they cant accept that I have my own options and preferences and it isnt meant to offend them. and sometimes they'll even try to twist my words to mean something bad in general so they can justify their offense and it makes no sense to me. ugh. leave me alone 😭

Today, I've thought a lot about what Toto Wolff said about Niki Lauda, as I am everyone else who has seen the tweet has done the same. My first response was a lot of anger towards Toto for calling Niki a mascot and joking about replacing him with Helmut. It feels belittling of Niki and disrespectful of everything he did for Mercedes. I tweeted about it, made a photo edit for Niki about it, and was very tempted to post on my tribute account to Niki about it, yet I held off from that. No need to make the situation bigger than what it is.

I went to read the article it was quoted from to gather as much context as I could for the quotes, and I'll include exactly what it said below:

'In the event that the matter ends with Marko leaving Red Bull, Toto Wolff makes him a tongue-in-cheek offer: Marko could take Niki Lauda's old place at Mercedes! "We're missing our old mascot anyway. Then we'll just use Helmut. He's age-appropriate. He doesn't have a red cap, but then he'll come to us," grins Wolff.' (using Google Translate to translate from German to English)

Clearly, Toto is trying to joke about the situation; maybe it's the sort of thing Niki would have laughed at himself. With as much as I know about Niki, he very likely would. Niki and Helmut had very similar racing careers at the start. Recently, I've been reading a book about Niki published in 1975 that focused a lot on Helmut initially to show the contrast and similarities between the two Austrian drivers. Then, as we all know, Niki worked for Mercedes and Helmut for Red Bull. I've read interviews with Niki and Helmut, and they got along well. Now, I don't agree with much of what Helmut has said and done, but I can't deny his friendship with Niki, whom I respect a lot. So I'm trying to look at this situation as Toto making the sort of joke Niki would have found funny about him and Helmut.

Yet even so, the phrasing of it feels like it diminishes all of what Niki did. He supported and understood the drivers when Toto couldn't, he gave his advice, and his no-bullshit approach would tell Mercedes what needed changing within the team and with the car. He was the non-executive chairman of Mercedes, and he owned stakes in the company. He was not just a man in a red cap to represent Mercedes.

Niki and Toto were very close. I could write so many stories that I know of the two of them, and it's why I want to try to understand why Toto would say such a thing about him. Niki saw Toto as one of his closest friends, which is why I am trying to rationalise it in my mind of Toto joking about it in a way that Niki would have found funny.

Maybe I'll have a more rational mind about it in a few days, or maybe I'll still be a bit bitter. Maybe he will say more about it, or maybe he won't. Time will tell on that front.

I'd also love to hear other people's thoughts on the situation, and on Toto. I just felt like I needed to put my thoughts into words and put them out there, given how much I've posted about Niki and shared.
