❛ i thought you’d like some company. ❜ / beck
just when she was about to get him, her empathic, very intuitive, sensitive boy. the one who'd eat at himself till there was nothing left if it meant no one else got hurt. which he'd done all summer, she'd seen it, how he was slowly wasting away keeping her secrets. how he'd pushed away all his friends, quit football because he was angry with his father, angry with the world ... never angry with her, even if he had every right in the world to be. she was going away - somewhere he couldn't follow. she was leaving him to brave the world on his own, and it broke both their hearts. lighting up with a smile when he comes into the living room, motioning to the couch with a hand, her other hand keeping the jewelry box closed.
" i was about to come look for you, " they had the morning to themselves, jeremiah was a heavy sleeper, and he would sleep all morning if they let him, which she would. it was weekend, there was no school, she wasn't too worried about school work not being done before lunchtime. she knows her boys are responsible, she raised them well. sitting down next to him on the couch, brushing her fingers through his hair - which, of course, he'd already brushed. " i have something for you, something for you to keep safe for me, and one day give to someone very special. " she won't say her name, even if she'd seen how they gazed at each other all summer. even if she knew the pain he'd been in, keeping himself in line, keeping track of her and everyone else. denying to himself ( and belly ) that he had feelings for her. but she knew it would happen eventually. at least she'd like to think so, even if she wasn't going to be there to cheer them on.
meme: i thought you'd like some company - an assortment of dialogue prompts. accepting. ( esp from u kt )

summers were magical, and while susannah knows the children believe her to be a part of it, she knew better. they were the magic. a smile as she sits next to her oldest son. the one who made her worry the most, his heart would ache when he found out. a part of her suspects already, maybe he already knows. he'd been more quiet this summer, more broody than he usually was. especially during summers away from adam. her fingers run through his hair, brushing his hair away from his forehead. her beautiful boy, what she wouldn't do to take away his pain. to ease the weight on his shoulders.
" belly was really happy to see you again, @con2ad. " bringing up the one person who seemed to be able to make her boy smile again. fingers brush on his jawline before she leans back on the couch. allowing him some space to open up, she wants to know everything. wants to soak up the last summer she will have with the children and laurel. the best summers.

+ @con2ad and susannah fisher. private starter.
there are times in a mother's life she never wants to face - this was one of them. realizing that her son had known for months. that he'd been suffering on his own - keeping up this facade, and knowing that it had been partly for her. it had been for her, for his little brother ... for laurel and belly, even steven. it breaks her heart. the one thing worse than dying ... it was leaving behind the living. to know she could not aid their grief, but instead she caused it. she could not pull him from the darkness, and she could not walk to the end of it with him either. he'd have to fight his own way to the light this time. she hopes, prays that their families will stick together through this. that they will know enough about love and trust, to always fall back into place.
jeremiah had fallen asleep with unshed tears still in his eyes - which allowed her to seek out her oldest, the boy who aligned his heart with the moon, always a mystery. beck had made it one of her most important tasks in life to stay up and watch the moon to understand what went on inside of his heart and mind a little better, but tonight she couldn't read it. do the trial, for us. they had both begged, and she had agreed. mostly for their sake, beck wanted to die with dignity, to feel like herself in her final moments, but there was no such thing - cancer ate up dignity, at least with everyone knowing, she'd get to die surrounded by their love. taking a seat next to him and running her fingers through his hair, then pulling him closer until he rests against her side. she might be smaller, but he would always fit perfectly curled up at her side. " i'm not mad you didn't tell me. are you mad i didn't tell you ? " voice is a soft whisper, letting him know that she understands if he is. she'd kept so many secrets to protect the innocence of their hearts - not realizing that her boy would do the same to protect the magic of hers. " i've made a lot of mistakes, huh ? "

conrad fisher was his own piece of magic, while susannah's magic was mostly based in summer time, conrad was magic all year around. and she is reminded when she has him this close, when her arms are around him, when he lets her coddle him. she wishes he would open up, that he would tell her what darkness lurked around his mind, whatever cloud fogged up his clarity. she would be there and she would use whatever magic wind she had to make the clouds blow away - this was her most proud task. making sure that conrad did not drown in his head.
shaking her head with a small laugh, pressing a kiss to the top of her head, fingers move to run through his hair before she boops her fingertip on the tip of his nose. " that is entirely different, do not play with me, connie. i know you see it, and if you don't, then you will know that i am right. " a knowing grin, she definitely doesn't miss the look on his face. " i hope she will give you so many smiles, my smart boy. you deserve them all. i know this year has been hard, and i am sorry i haven't been able to ease it. i hope our girl will. "
conrad could have stayed there forever, curled up by his mother's side with her fingers carding through his hair. he could have fallen asleep like that, did a lot when he was a kid. she had a way of making him feel like everything was going to be okay, even though he knew that it wasn't. even though he knew that she wasn't. that summer was different. he knew too much, more than she wanted him to know. so he took advantage of the little moments like this, when it was just the two of them and he could soak up all her magic.
"mom." he groaned, but a small smile twitched on his lips, so fast she would have missed it if she blinked. he angled his head toward her, still pressed up against the back of the couch. "she was just as excited to see jeremiah," he pointed out, and there was a subtle air of annoyance in his tone. a hint of jealousy. "you too mom. i think she was just excited to be here. at the beach house. in cousins." even he could tell that he was just making excuses. she did seem happy to see him, and he was definitely excited to see her.

her sweet boy, she had done great with them. with both of her boys, her legacy and pride in this world. the ones that kept her strong and going through everything. they were everything good, everything golden in the world, to know that she would take some of that away from them was breaking her more than the actual thought of dying. the thought of not being here to see them grow into the best men, the men she knew they were going to be. they didn't talk about, not directly. she wouldn't take hope away from them, but she knew her time was limited. she knew that one day she would be no more, she would be a whisper in the wind, a gentle caress against their cheeks, a ruffle of wind brushing through their wild hair. she hopes they will keep her in their hearts, that they won't let grief swallow them, or tear a rift between them. they were too important.
he was going to go so far, her midnight boy, the one who'd come at night, he'd been born exactly on the day she knew he would. it wasn't his due date. it was six days early, but she had told adam, she had said to him: our boy is coming today, i can feel it in my heart. and of course, he hadn't believed her. but he never knew conrad like she did. moving her hand to brush her slender fingers through his dark hair, smiling when she notices the muffins he brought. " thank you, sweet boy. always making sure everyone are okay. but - " she pulls out the little box. maybe he still didn't realize, she had plenty of jewelry boxes. beck liked nice things, and she loved keeping them as little treasures. she had always called isabel that, her little special girl. her treasure. the only girl they had. they were all so special. so she opens the box, kissing his temple. " it isn't a birthday gift, but something for the one you'll marry someday. a little piece of me to always be there for the two of you. " even if it didn't end up being belly - it would be someone who would hopefully take care of conrad, guide him out of the darkness that clouded his mind. " if you don't like it .... you're not obligated to use it. if your wife doesn't want it, maybe your daughter will. "
conrad couldn't remember the last time he had a full night's sleep. part of that was the crippling fear that he would sleep through it. when she got worse. when she died. like he'd close his eyes, and wake up, and she'd be gone. he knew that wasn't how it worked, and it didn't really matter if he slept two hours or eight, but his body just . . . refused to relax like that. he had too many thoughts running through his mind all the time. he was home for the weekend. again. his grades were starting to slip, but he didn't tell her that. he didn't want her to worry about him. she had enough shit going on, and he hadn't been doing her any favors. as far as he knew, belly still hadn't come to see her. not once since she got sick again. he didn't even know if she knew, she deserved to know, but he knew he wasn't the person who should tell her. she should hear it from laurel. he spent as much time at home as he could, but he knew it wasn't enough.
"morning," he said, giving her a small smile. it was all he could manage, and felt more like a grimace. "i got muffins," he said, pushing the container closer to her on the table. they weren't the same as the ones in cousins, but they were the best they had found in boston. he got beck's favorite flavor for them. and one of jeremiah's favorites too, for whenever he finally got out of bed. "mom—" he started to protest, but gift giving was one of her love languages. it made her happy, and he didn't want to take that away from her, so he gave her another one of those sad smiles. "thank you. i'll keep it safe," he promised, voice hoarse from the lump in his throat. he didn't know what she meant about giving it to someone else, maybe it was something for jeremiah when he was older? but he didn't ask. "it's not even my birthday," he teased, leaning over to nudge her shoulder, then he pressed a kiss to her cheek.
