edna contemplates prolonging the jokes a little more—but even she gets tired of long, boring exposition sessions like this. there are more questions than jokes in her mind right now, and while she is a rather patient person, it feels like the waiting is infinite since mister gloomy needs to write what he wants to say. she doesn't mind people writing to communicate, seeing as she's an expert with written letters herself, but jokes starting getting distasteful after a while, especially when the audience is so emo-looking and quiet ( and invisible. )
reading the new page of words, she nods. ❛ yes, that's my name, gloo-lios. ❜ and just because she knows it will be annoying, she smirks and adds, ❛ 'gloo' from 'gloomy' while 'lios' is from your name. way shorter, easier, and better to use, in my opinion. ❜ his sister, though, she'll be safe from any names. edna doesn't even know anything about her anyway, how this alune looks or acts. for all she knows, alune could be laughing at her right now and edna wouldn't even know—but if this were to happen, then she'd want alune to laugh at the look on her brother's face. edna didn't know someone so emo-looking could make such facial expressions. ha.
❛ they can't see me because i'm a seraph, ❜ she explains, once the fun is over, resting the tip of her umbrella on the ground like a cane. ❛ we're divine beings, simply put. years ago, humans could see us, but as times changed and evolved, they gradually lost their faith in us. ❜ subtly, her eyes harden a little. it's sad, this world. but still: she decides to believe in what sorey wanted to fight for; what alisha wanted to fight for, what her friends all wanted to fight for. at least the earthen historia will remember their deeds.
❛ people began starting wars and fall to their greed for money and power: all of that foolishness lowered their resonance to see us completely, ❜ she continues, placidly. ❛ nowadays, it's super rare for a human to see a seraph—but it's not impossible, you being an example. not sure if that 'substance' of yours counts, but there have also been humans pure-hearted enough to have natural high resonance. ❜ after a beat, edna looks at him. ❛ did you get all of that, gloo-lios? i charge interest for my time being invested like this, so you better. ❜
APHELIOS squints at hearing his sister referred to as a ghost. while she was indeed in the spirit realm she was still very much alive. his instinct to be defensive for his twin's sake, but he resigns to remain neutral for the time being. there is no need for conflict especially if there is something that gives a hint toward his and his twin's curiosity. they'd come across many individuals of different walks of life but never someone such as this. a completely different being than that of an aspect and that garnered their attention.
his gaze examines her quietly as he lingers within his own thoughts. her personality is certainly something to be an acquired taste. while he wasn't fond of the odd nickname or the potent levels of sarcasm her words were laced with aphelios couldn't bring himself to get too angered. if anything the notion she too had a brother twinges something deep within him. on the outside he remains a blank slate but internally he could feel some sense of understanding all the while he can hear alune's soft chuckles as if she could recognise everything that aphelios couldn't put a name on. it wasn't uncommon for his twin to understand his own thoughts and feelings well before he did, but her demeanor becoming more and more relaxed gave way for him to also relax himself even just a bit.
the 'edna's q and a corner' got an eyebrow to raise. ah, so her name was most likely edna. it wasn't as if there was anyone else around here that could possibly be named edna and it would be strange for her to say some random name though he would not put it against her to do such a thing to poke fun at him to some degree.
‹ i quite like her, phel. ›
a small sigh parts from his lips as he takes out his notepad once more to write a response to this girl. aphelios does his best to word himself as concise as he possibly could before turning the book toward edna.
« i am safe to assume your name is edna, correct? to make introductions easier my name is aphelios while my sister's is alune. you mentioned humans normally cannot see you. why is that? »
#armafidelium#°˖✧❀ ❛ peace on the mountains. ┊ main verse. ❀✧˖°#take as long as you need to reply tbh ! 💗#lol phel and meebo being unexpected comrades in arms just bc they both know edna is so hard to deal with .....#it happened again 😭😭 why does tumblr always log me out when i'm replying to phel 😭😭😭 tumblr confirmed to be phel-phobic

@unmeiame adventures with the forsaken archer
Ron didn't say anything while standing on the building while Edna watching the sky. The archer spirit had no comment, but he did turn his gaze towards the stars. No matter how many times he stared at the night sky, Ron never got bothered by the sight.
He let out his question and saw how Edna reacted to his question. He wondered if she questioning how he could see her. It was one of the questions he never understand. Not even since the days of Malak. Ron didn't know why he could see Seraphs.
"Nope, Helions don't really worry me or something like that. Thought I'll simply fired a sword arrow at them. I"m more worried when you run off, and I can't find you. Don't forget I promised your brother I keep a eye on you. Plus you have my contract and I serve," Ron responded with a shrug and gave Edna a look. He always tried to keep his word to his former comrade.

68 days (perhaps) until submission
My heart is warm with the friends I make / And better friends I will not be knowing / Yet there isn't a train I wouldn't take / No matter where it's going
Edna St Vincent Millay
Saying byes to comrades. Saying bye to Hampstead Heath (station). Regretting that I won't capture any more of that early evening Camden aura on film.

One night, when kicked out for his whining, BJ goes to the officer’s tent where Radar’s shares his woes. BJ formulates a plan to get him focused on something other than Steve fixing everything in HIS house. He’ll try his hand at matchmaking, nothing can go wrong…right?

It's nice to know that Velvet has the same feelings about boys and the strange inner mechanisms of their minds. Seeing how Lailah, Rose, and Alisha are all not here, Edna has no female friends to turn to for solidarity, which is already pretty sad, in her opinion. She certainly doesn't want to be the only girl here surrounded by weird guys, period. That's why it's not so bad anymore with Velvet around.
With the way how Velvet never mentions or asks anything pertaining to her brother or Phoenix, Edna gets the feeling that she already knows about both. Well, not so much about Onii-chan since she isn't sure if Velvet even saw them that day at the hotsprings—but it's obvious that she at least knows the truth about who Phoenix is. She can see the glint in Velvet's eyes, that smirk from watching her twirl the umbrella. This is great. Excellent, really. Edna is glad Velvet is the first of Onii-chan's friends she meets. A fellow comrade.
She boredly looks at him still spinning past her line of sight, noting the way his pupils are starting to swerve. He's doing a remarkable job of still being a 'doll,' but it's a sign that it's working. Just a little more...
Pleasantly, Edna smiles and doesn't think twice to offer Velvet her umbrella. She did notice Velvet's left hand, but from the way they've been hitting it off, she doubts Velvet would deliberately destroy her umbrella. If Velvet wanted to hurt her at all, then they wouldn't be lamenting together about dumb boys and punishing creepy stalkers.
❛ What good is fun if it's being sacrificed at the cost of fashion? That's overrated. ❜ With her umbrella handed over, Edna leisurely waits and anticipates the amount of suffering the stalker will go through by her new partner in crime. Her eyes also have a glint in them. ❛ I've been told my outfit looks strange, but does it look like I care? Besides, no one else is watching except me. ❜
❛ It's all in the wrist, ❜ she advises, miming the action of twirling her umbrella for a demonstration. ❛ Move the wrists, not the arms. ❜
She is expecting great results. This is going to be so great.
"You really think they would," Velvet agreed. But apparently not. Apparently the boys thought that she, Eleanor, and Magilou just loved hearing about their ponderings of this and that. Especially bugs. Velvet just didn't get it.
At least Phoenix's blessing was working in Edna's favor. That meant that all the hard work it took to actually acquire his help had been worth it. Eizen would have been glad to know that much. Though, really, he probably could have figured that much out just from seeing her. Had they even seen one another at the festival yet? That was a good question. One she wouldn't ask, though. Velvet knew better, since she knew the ache of being separated from a sibling. Though in her case, the separation was different.
And there Edna went, seeming to pick up on exactly what Velvet had been thinking. She spun her umbrella around and around, faster and faster. A smirk formed. Take that, you obnoxious normin. That was for all the trouble that he put them through. All the nonsense of finding those nor dolls and the struggles of actually fighting him.
Velvet wondered for a moment if the normin was screaming on the inside. Begging for Edna to stop. If he was? Good. All the better, then.
"Really?" There was a glint of deviousness in her eyes. She held her hand out, ready to accept the umbrella from Edna. Part of her wondered if she'd look any kind of ridiculous holding an umbrella like that. It would be worth it if they both got to torment Phoenix.
She just had to make sure not to break the thing.
"It does look fun," Velvet said. "I'll give it a go. Though I don't know how well your umbrella will go with my outfit." That much didn't matter. Tormenting Phoenix did.
"I wonder how fast I should make it go..." Yeah. Take that, Phoenix.
#talesofourworlds#springfestitales2024#ME TOO ..... i didn't know how A++++++++++++ edna and velvet would be together#poor phoenix but this is fine [ fire in background ]#i meant to reply to this waaaay earlier but i got lost in the chaos of today with edna and jade bullying alexei lmao

Another part of differnces between polish and english dub of Ninjago!
Previous Masterpost Next
Skybound | Podniebni Piraci (Sky Pirates)
55. Infamous | Niechęć (Reluctance)
● This is the only season so far where the 'Episode [number]' part is read in polish dub.
Also, Jay's got a new Voice Actor, exclusively for this season. No clue why.
● Lil'Nelson is first untranslated, but later Lloyd says 'Nelsonku' (Diminutive of Nelson).
● In this episode Stiix is pronounced like 'Styx' in polish (as in the river from greek mythology).
● Clouse: "I've freed a genie!" → "Uwolniłem ducha!" (I've freed a ghost!) Probably because 'genie' and 'djinn' are the same word in polish. Whenever 'genie' is used it's translated to 'ghost'.
● The mention of being unable to wish for more wishes is absent. It's not until near the finale that this rule is mentioned for the first time.
● Some reappearing phrases and names of important objects:
The Teapot of Tyrahn is changed to the Lamp of Tyrahn.
"Your wish is yours to keep." → "Twe życzenie mym rozkazem" (Your wish is my command.)
"I wish it all away." → "Życzę sobie by to wszystko się skończyło." (I wish for it all to end.)
Misfortune's Keep is translated to the 'Fortress os Misforune' (Twierdza Nieszczęścia).
● Man: "No one cares here for them fruit-colored Ninija."
Cole: "What fruit is black?"
Jay: "Blackberries?"
→
Man: "Nikogo tu nie interesują dzieciaki w tęczowych ubrankach." (Nobody's here interested about kids in rainbow clothes.)
Cole: "A gdzie tu w tęczy czarny?" (And where is black in the rainbow?)
Jay: "W nocy na przykład?" (In the night for example?)
● When Jay lists the bad thigs that happened after the team splitted, Morro's Possession is translated to Morro's Madness.
56. Public Enemy Number One | Wróg Publiczny Numer Jeden
● Misako: "I wish I hadn't said anything in the first place." → "Gdybym miała trzy życzenia, mogłabym to wszystko cofnąć." (If I had three wishes, I could undo it all.)
● Instead of Jay saying that he's the last one to figure out Monastery being the meeting place, Kai says it.
● Jamanakai is pronounced 'Jumankai' in this episode.
● Ronin talks to R.E.X. as if it's a dog.
● Cole calls Jay brother.
57. Enkrypted | W Niewoli (In Captivity)
● Dogshank is translated to Psia Kostka (Dog's Ankle). 'Psia Kostka' is also a mild swear in polish, so Dogshank's name is a pun here!
Monkey Wrench is translated literally (Małpi Klucz). The rest of the Crew's names aren't translated.
● Kai [to Dareth]: "You're our manager! What are you doing to manage this?" → "Ponoć jesteś artystą! Może byś wymyślił jakąś sztuczkę?" (You're supposed to be an artist! How about you come up with some kind of trick?)
● When Dareth and the Kryptarium Warden talk about the Brown Ninja they talk about him in third person, as if the Warden's unaware/pretending to be unaware about Dareth being the Brown Ninja, but in polish Dareth uses first person, and acts as if he doesn't know who the Brown Ninja is.
● Soto: "[Jay] says everything obvious!" → "Właśnie odkrył Amerykę!" (He just discovered America!) 'To discover America is a polish idiom, used when someone says something obvious/ well known. It's the second time it appears in Ninjago, the first being in Tournament of Elements.
● After the prison break out, Soto calls the Ninja Comrades of Misery, when in english he calls them Pajama People.
58. Misfortune Rising | Powrót Twierdzy Nieszczęścia (Return of the Fortress of Misfortune)
● Ed: "And we gladly raised you as our own." → "I postanowiliśmy, że cię nie oddamy." (And we decided to not give you away.)
● Jay: "Is this where my birth father lived?" → "Tu mieszkał mój prawdziwy ojciec?" (Is this where my real father lived?).
Whenever Jay uses phrase 'birth parents' it's translated like that. I'm...undecided whether I like this decision or not. On one hand, it undermines Ed and Edna as parents. On the other hand, when Jay later says that Ed and Edna are his real parents, the realisation has more weight added to it and hits harder.
There's also the fact that I don't know how else it could be translated? Birth parents in polish would literally be 'rodzeni rodzice', which sounds odd since both words have the same core. Like, imagine saying 'my birth birthers' or 'my parental parents'. Weird, right? When talking about birth parents, 'biological' is generally used, but i can see why it's not utilised, as 'prawdziwy' already has three syllables, and 'biologiczny' would have four. So I'm not sure if there's a right anwser here.
● Sky Pirates is translated to 'Latający Piraci' (Flying Pirates).
59. On a Wish and a Prayer | Na Własne Życzenie (On Your Own wish)
no notes
60. My dinner with Nadakhan | Kolacja z Nadakhanem (Supper with Nadakhan)
● Gayle Gossip is translated to Gayle Plotkara ( Plotkara → Gossip Girl)
●When Clancee says he wasn't treated too kindly by other Serpentine, in polish he narrows it down to Anacondrai.
● Instead of Jay pointing out Nadakhan's accent, he points out his hairstyle, since in polish dub Nadakhan wasn't given any accent.
61. Wishmasters | Czary Mary ('czary mary' is a spell name, like Abracadabra or Hocus Pocus)
no notes. again.
62. The Last Resort | Ostatnia Deska Ratunku
● Traveler's Tea is translated here as Wanderer's Tea. (Earlier it was translated literally).
● When Clancee says that he's happy and doesn't need wishes, in polish ha adds that he's full.
63. Operation Land-Ho! | Operacja Ziemia-Powietrze (Operation Earth-Air)
● Jay adds 'I love you' when leaving Ed & Edna's.
● Ninja Replacements → Ninja Team B
● Clancee: "She'll obviously object." → "Ona nic nie powie." (She won't say anything).
● Kai called Jay brother.
64. The Way Back | Droga Powrotna
● During the wedding, Clancee says that Nadakhan is free of having to fulfill wishes of others.
● Clancee: "I now pronounce you all-powerfull." → "Ogłaszam cię Panem Wszystkich Życzeń." (I pronounce you the Lord of All Wishes).
Season 6 took over four pages. Next week I'll be posting DotD along with Season 7. Originally I planned to post Skybound with Day of the Departed, but decided that Hands of Time thematically fits better.

it would seem that this girl is easily entertained... a fellow comrade, perhaps. though, edna is mildly disgusted that this 'sabin' guy reeks of sweat. even though he looks like a homeless bum, at least zaveid actually bathes. ❛ paint their portraits? ❜ edna is now piqued, as indicated by the arching of her eyebrow. do the paintings come to life or something? does she paint their worst fears? if that's the case... ❛ tell me: how does that work? i've never seen anyone use art as a weapon before. ❜ of course, edna has her own methods of putting idiots in line, but it wouldn't hurt to know more...
relm just nods her head as she listens to the other girl. incredible! she also had a stupid man to deal with! what were the odds?! "giants with no brains?!" she starts giggling. she was going to call sabin that the next time she saw him. hey...! maybe they could come up with things to call sabin and this zavey guy she mentioned. relm always needed new material against sabin. "three idiots!? but oh! that's easy! i just threaten to paint their portrait and they fall in line real fast!" she laughs. even in a world without magic, her powers to paint true-to-life portraits was still feared by some. good! it'd teach people to mess with her!

naruto oc masterpost
i went on an artbreeder binge tonight and made a shit ton of my ocs so i figured now was as good as ever to make a proper masterpost. so without further ado, buckle the fuck up and here we go.
(stuck this under a read more because it got kind of long whoops)
the hatake family
rei natsuki and kakashi hatake were childhood best friends and neighbors. they drifted over the years after kakashi began losing everything and everyone he cared about. he refused to support rei’s dreams of becoming a ninja because he couldn’t stand to watch her put herself in harm’s way–he couldn’t stand the thought of losing her. they are eventually reunited when rei is appointed to the anbu black ops. they quickly reconcile and start a romantic relationship together. eventually, they marry and have two children: nariko, who was born on a battlefield, and rokurou, who they are blessed with after kakashi takes office as sixth hokage.
two years after rokurou’s birth, rei and kakashi take in an orphaned girl who they name sutego. not long after, rei falls pregnant again with twins katsuro and keiko. a high-risk pregnancy, a long labor puts rei in distress and keiko, small and weak, is delivered after her brother by emergency c-section. it is after this experience that kakashi decides to retire as hokage to devote himself fully to his family. he and rei have one more child, a son, named kazuhiko.
dorimuchimu: the dream team rei’s childhood team. she was trained alongside her best friends naru fuzuki and sekkachi fumeiyo. naru was of a prominent family in konoha heavily involved with local politics and as such was rather well-off, financially. naru ends up following rei into the anbu black ops. sekkachi can only use taijutsu and therefore spent a lot of time with might guy, with whom she spars with every wednesday afternoon to this day. she is chronically ill and therefore has faced many setbacks in her shinobi journey, thus making her rather cynical and harsh. they four of them were led by their sensei, chikara, a former dancer.
tenshi taketori was one of the new recruits trained in the anbu alongside rei. she is cunning, seductive, and determined. mikazuki zazen was also one of the anbu trained alongside rei, known for her rare and powerful dojutsu–the shinkantazagan, which grants users a powerful sense of awareness. sefure kawakubo was a former flame of kakashi’s while he was in the anbu, met with mainly for stress relief purposes. her younger sister, arai kawakubo, is a coarse new anbu recruit assigned to the team that rei captains.
nozomu is a cynical artist who rei meets in an inpatient program in the konoha hospital. she is dark and brooding, placed in treatment after a suicide attempt, but her beautiful art gives others hope. suisen unohana is another patient, seeking treatment for an eating disorder. the inpatient program is led by sosei chouwa who preaches recovery based on holistic treatment methods. she has a twin sister, seiiku chouwa, who is the head of the maternity ward and a licensed midwife.
seiiku’s star pupil is a young immigrant, tanjo, who decided to become a midwife after the unexpected birth of her son, kyugeki, who she was unaware she was pregnant with. tanjo is responsible for delivering rei and kakashi’s second child in a home birth during a blizzard.
sefure and arai’s grandmother, edna kawakubo, owns a local high-end kimono shop that naru frequents. she is a former anbu and the head of the uniform sewing division in the konoha grandmother’s coalition, a group of elderly former shinobi who give back to the community by sewing new ninja uniforms among other things.
komori unohana, suisen’s grandmother, owns a local antiques shop alongside her twin brother, rojin unohana. komori was also a former anbu, childhood comrade of edna, and member of the konoha grandmother’s coalition. she is obsessed with collecting souvenirs and knick-knacks from various villages. rojin has a specialty in old mechanical pieces. he took chikara in when she first emigrated to konoha and she therefore repays his kindness by bringing him appliances of hers to fix.
arai’s daughter, ichika kawakubo, is nariko’s main rival. conceited and self-centered, she often cares more about a broken nail than training to become a strong shinobi. suisen’s daughter, kanami unohana, becomes best friends with rokurou hatake. she is blind, and never knew her father, but when suisen and kiba begin dating, he becomes as close to a father as she gets. he also provides her with her own ninken to act as a guide dog.
the kankitsurui girls rei’s grandmother, teiko natsuki, was originally of the kankitsurui clan—a small clan of citrus farmers on the outskirts of what would become konoha. teiko and her family were recruited to move to the newly established konoha by hashirama senju himself thanks to teiko’s extraordinary chakra tethering ability. as a child, she trained under mito uzumaki alongside edna kawakubo and komori unohana. she was extremely close with her younger sister, fuun kankitsurui, whose exile as a teenager after falling unexpectedly pregnant tore an irreparable rift between teiko and her strict parents. in an act of rebellion, teiko joined the anbu black ops. she went on to marry oku natsuki, the owner of a local bookshop, and have one son. as an elderly woman, she founded the konoha grandmother’s coalition and has an extremely close bond with her granddaughter.
the parents rei’s parents, hana and yuruganai natsuki, run the local bookstore, kaminoki shop. originally a yamanaka, hana turned down the civilian pathway thanks to suffering chronic migraines from using the mind transfer technique. she met her husband during her brief time in the academy. yuruganai was on the same genin team as sakumo and aijo hatake but quickly gave up on becoming a ninja after a serious arm injury during the chunin exams. sakumo and aijo, in contrast, becmae a legendary duo known for their ninja hounds, the companionship of which was rooted in aijo having grown up in the inuzuka clan. the two couples lived next door and raised their children, rei and kakashi, alongside one another until aijo and then sakumo both passed away.
amai is a waitress at the local dango shop who has a passion for sweets. she is often met by sekkachi and hiretsuna akado, the ditsy hospital receptionist who sekkachi treats to taiyaki as thanks for always keeping her company during her many doctor’s appointments. sukui yukio is another new recruit from rei’s anbu team, a charming and princely young man who never lets anyone forget about his resemblance to actor keihaku goman from the “icha icha” film adaptation. another comrade from rei’s anbu team is hitsuji akado, hiretsuna’s twin brother. he is a prodigy in math and science and has social anxiety and a dog allergy. he got the brains whereas his sister got the beauty. their father is an accountant and their mother is a friend of hana’s.
sekkachi’s cousin, tenjikubotan fumeiyo, is as glamorous and charming as sekkachi is blunt and sarcastic. where sekkachi works against her chronic illness–a family curse bestowed upon her grandmother when she fled to konoha for refuge–to achieve her dreams of being an elite ninja, tenjikubotan takes advantage of her sickness to be waited on hand and foot and treated like a princess. she has a tiger summons named byakko who acts as her companion. tenjikubotan’s bright and bubbly younger sister is roru fumeiyo, a chunin of konohagakure with her own tiger companion. she idolizes sekkachi and ends up in a relationship with rock lee. tenjikubotan goes on to marry sukui and together they have a daughter, oniyuri.
brother and sister duo ketsui and hoseki kenshin make the best ninja tools in the entire village. ketsui forges not only kunai and swords but also jewelry. kakashi trusted no one else to create the engagement ring he gave to rei. ketsui’s younger sister hoseki is his apprentice and teammates with suisen unohana and roru fumeiyo. when she is not forging her own weapons and jewlery, she is responsible for sourcing all of their material. one of her favorite things is going down into the mines and finding rare gems. she is especaily fascinated with guren’s crystal release.
ketsui and hoseki’s cousin, kagami kenshin, is another character that rei meets during her time in inpatient. kagami is in treatment to help manage his bipolar disorder. he, rei, suisen, and nozumu end up becoming fairly close with one another after attending group therapy sessions every day.
yuzu is a quirky preteen girl who hana and yuruganai hire to lend a helping hand at kaminoki. she devours books like nobody’s business and has a particular interest in sociopolitical matters.

A Women’s History of City Lights: Interview with Nancy J. Peters
We'll be celebrating Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s 102nd birthday on March 24, and what better way to remember his legacy AND to mark Women’s History Month, than to honor Nancy J. Peters, Lawrence’s business partner, friend, and longtime comrade at City Lights Books. While Ferlinghetti certainly deserves all of the accolades he’s received, the fact of the matter is there would literally be no City Lights without Nancy Peters. Beyond shepherding City Lights through various fiscal crises and providing the steady anchor that allowed Ferlinghetti to travel the world as a poet and activist, Nancy's vision as an editor and acumen as a publisher were a vital key to the success and longevity of City Lights Publishers.
***
City Lights: How did you come to know what City Lights was? How did you meet Lawrence Ferlinghetti?
Nancy Peters: In Greece in the early 1960s, I became friends with Nanos Valaoritis and Marie Wilson who were at the center of an international bohemian/surrealist community. They had a large home which was always full of traveling writers and artists whom they made welcome. The Beat writers were among their guests, and City Lights was frequently talked about as a place everyone would meet up someday. I met Philip Lamantia there and in 1965 he introduced me to Lawrence in Paris at one of Jean-Jacque Lebel’s anarcho-surrealist festivals of free expression. Before a riotous crowd Lawrence gave a show-stopping rendition of his “Lord’s Prayer.” I was impressed by his powerful stage presence. Later that year, when Philip and I were living in Andalusia, Lawrence wrote Philip, asking for a selection of poems for a Pocket Poets Series volume. We corresponded some while we were putting the book together, but I didn’t see him again until 1971 when I moved to San Francisco.
I’d been working as an executive-trainee librarian at the Library of Congress in the fall of 1968. In April, Martin Luther King was assassinated and the impassioned protests that ensued left Washington neighborhoods in ruins. There was shockingly little assistance to residents from the government and my part of the city was under military surveillance, helicopters hovering over my apartment through the night. A Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam took place in Washington the following year. Over 750,000 people peacefully demonstrated. In a small way, I was involved in the planning and, during the protests, my apartment was crammed with fellow activists.
The Library of Congress was an amazing, fascinating place with compatible co-workers from all over the world—thousands of book people all in one place. However, the mission of the Library is to serve Congress, and the institution was a huge conservative bureaucracy serving a conservative and ineffective Congress as I saw it. I believed that if I stayed there I would have little contact with actual books or opportunities for civic activism.
So I moved to San Francisco, where Philip was living and urging me to come, and spent an enormous amount of time at City Lights while I was job hunting. It seemed like paradise, such a stimulating atmosphere where people could sit down to read, share ideas, and have conversations about books, politics, art. One day in early 1971 when I was walking down the street in North Beach, Lawrence hailed me and asked if I would like to help him with a bibliography of Allen Ginsberg’s writings. After just a brief meeting at the publishing office, Lawrence went to Europe and his editorial assistant Jan Herman suddenly decided to move to Germany. Jan showed me how all the editorial work was done in the office, told me Lawrence “wouldn’t mind,” and so I found myself beginning an exciting new career in publishing.
What was your experience taking over as executive director and co-owner in 1984?
The store back then employed seven people: six men at the bookstore and one (me) at the publishing branch. So “executive director” is far too grand a title. City Lights was a small, failing organization by 1982. The store was not founded to make profits for the owners and it never did make a profit. Breaking even was the goal. But every year the losses mounted and there came a time when there were very few books left on the shelves. No one had seen a customer venture downstairs to the lower part of the store for many months.
At the time, Lawrence was immensely popular and in great demand as a performer and a speaker, so he was traveling much of the time, visiting foreign colleagues, living abroad, finding new writers to translate. At this low point in the store’s history Lawrence told me in a frustrated moment that if I’d like to own City Lights, he would give it to me outright if I would run the business, freeing him to do all the other things he wanted to do. I declined, but told him I would be honored to be his partner. Theft was seriously addressed, and a protracted payment plan was agreed to by Book People, the East Bay employee-owned distributors who extended us credit for a generous period. Savvy booksellers Richard Berman and Paul Yamazaki headed the re-stocking plan. The three of us would go every week to Book People and Lou Swift Distributors to collect enough books to sell the following week. As time went on, everybody at the store consulted book catalogs and took on the responsibility for buying subject sections. I envisioned a participatory structure. If not a co-op, I wanted a bookstore where all the staff had responsibilities and power.
Why the decision not to have multiple bookstore locations around SF?
At one time we seriously considered additional locations. We explored sites in San Francisco’s Mission district and visited city officials in San Jose to talk about a second store there. But our resources were limited, and we were concerned about the time and money that would be required to create a sister store that would embody the same spirit and ethic as the original. During my time as director, the evolving challenges from chain stores and especially Amazon made beginning a new store a very risky enterprise. In retrospect, so many independents were closing that we decided to invest in our present, iconic location. In retrospect I think it was a good decision after watching attempts by other stores fail to duplicate their success elsewhere.
How has North Beach changed, how has it stayed the same? With the exodus of Big Tech and falling rents, how do you think that will affect North Beach and San Francisco in general in the future? Will there be “a rebirth of wonder”?
North Beach when I came to SF was a small bohemian village, where neighbors shared meals on their flat rooftops watching the sun set over the Bay. My rent was $125 a month, cheap even then. City Lights and the Discovery Bookstore (used books) next door to Vesuvio were key places to spend an evening. Two large Italian grocers delivered (no charge) bags of groceries up four flights of stairs to my apartment. The neighborhood was full of inexpensive Basque, Italian, and Chinese restaurants, and many cafes, many of which seemed unchanged since the 19th century. Change happens, and City Lights is well prepared for the future. It’s never easy to predict how things will develop, but the feeling of a lovely Mediterranean town persists, with the wooden buildings painted pastel colors, and the shimmering sea light on misty days. I feel certain that the light of City Lights will prevail for a long time to come.
Do you feel that your gender had any impact on your experience during your 23 years as director? Do you have any comments about women in bookselling or publishing in general?
Gender always has an impact. The Beat movement was certainly male focused. Even though the undaunted Diane di Prima was recognized, she was never enthusiastically supported by the inner nucleus of Beat poets. It was a long time before the Beat women came into their own. From the start, Lawrence, who insisted he wasn’t a Beat, had eclectic tastes and was open to women’s poetry. He admired Marianne Moore and Edna St. Vincent Millay as much as he did T.S. Eliot, Jacques Prévert, and Allen Ginsberg. In the Pocket Poets Series, he’d published di Prima and, very early in the series, both Marie Ponsot and Denise Levertov.
Women’s rights and opportunities are always vulnerable and cyclic. The Women’s Movement of the 1970s was very powerful and widespread, its impact on women’s lives enormous. At City Lights we hired more women; we published more women. There have always been outstanding women in publishing and bookselling, and during that time increasingly more women writers were published, reviewed, and were given accolades and awards. Women opened general bookstores and women’s bookstores, founded feminist and lesbian presses. It was a thrilling development, to see so many marginalized writers, and not just women, finding established publishers or creating their own presses. Together they created a larger, much more diverse national literature.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with many talented women at the bookstore. And in the publishing branch: Stella Levy, Kim McCloud, and Patricia Fujii. Gail Chiarello collected and edited our bestselling Bukowski stories. Annie Janowitz proposed the timely Unamerican Activities, and Amy Scholder brought us classics by Karen Finley, Rebecca Brown, and others. I’m happy to say that Amy Scholder is again working with City Lights as an editor.
When did you meet the now current publisher and executive director Elaine Katzenberger? What was her position at the bookstore? When did you know that she was the right person to take over as director?
Ah, Elaine, the woman who can do everything! Elaine began at the bookstore sales counter, then reorganized files and the store accounts, and very soon excelled as a book buyer. She had a great feeling for good writing, so I asked her to become an editor and she immediately began adding excellent books to City Lights’ list. She’s smart, witty, multitalented, and politically astute. We are very lucky to have her at the helm.
What is your understanding or vision of what of City Lights is and what it could be? How has Lawrence’s passing impacted this?
Lawrence’s democratic inclusiveness made him the best-selling poet in the U.S. His moral principles, his courage and resilience are a model to be emulated. He conceived City Lights as an educational institution that would open minds to explore and relate to the world through books. “One guy told me he’d got the equivalent of a Ph. D just sitting in the basement reading all our great books,” he often reminded us.
His “literary gathering place” was to be a fulcrum of San Francisco cultural experience, where our bookselling and publishing could amplify the voices of diverse experiences, connect with other creative communities, and serve as a center of dissent and, at the same time, a force for creating a better society.
Lawrence’s vision will continue to be our guiding light. An optimistic realist, he believed that City Lights would long endure as the co-creation of all the dedicated people who work here and make it what it is.

Langston Hughes and Edna St. Vincent Millay - Pink
Oooh, thank you!
Langston Hughes: If you could be part of a literary era, which one?
I’d love to have grown up with Anglo-Saxon/Norse kenning traditions. I love oral poetry and the sagas.
Edna St. Vincent Millay: Do you have a favorite poem or one you can recite?
I’ve been known to recite this at parties when tipsy. My parents had Bad Poetry Nights where their friends would come round and every guest had to recite the worse poem they could memorize. William McGonagall always, always wins. I challenge anyone to read this out loud and not collapse in hysterics.
But my favourite serious poem might be this one, by James Elroy Flecker, who died too young:
The Old Ships
I have seen old ships sail like swans asleep
Beyond the village which men still call Tyre,
With leaden age o'ercargoed, dipping deep
For Famagusta and the hidden sun
That rings black Cyprus with a lake of fire;
And all those ships were certainly so old -
Who knows how oft with squat and noisy gun,
Questing brown slaves or Syrian oranges,
The pirate Genoese
Hell-raked them till they rolled
Blood, water, fruit and corpses up the hold.
But now through friendly seas they softly run,
Painted the mid-sea blue or shore-sea green,
Still patterned with the vine and grapes in gold.
But I have seen,
Pointing her shapely shadows from the dawn,
An image tumbled on a rose-swept bay,
A drowsy ship of some yet older day;
And, wonder's breath indrawn,
Thought I - who knows - who knows - but in that same
(Fished up beyond Aeaea, patched up new
- Stern painted brighter blue -)
That talkative, bald-headed seaman came
(Twelve patient comrades sweating at the oar)
From Troy's doom-crimson shore,
And with great lies about his wooden horse
Set the crew laughing, and forgot his course.
It was so old a ship - who knows, who knows?
- And yet so beautiful, I watched in vain
To see the mast burst open with a rose,
And the whole deck put on its leaves again.

So, chatting with my friend, Moezy, we were listing our top 10 (.5) anime guys that we liked in all anime and/or manga that we have watched/read...here is my list starting from 10.
10. Kogami Shinya from Psycho-Pass.
Badass and intelligent. I just love this guy. His backstory is a sad one, but it’s not something that he regrets. He can be a bit emotional, but really, who isn’t? What I like about him is that he knows what the right thing is morally, but he just can’t help his emotions. He knows when he is doing the wrong thing, but won’t run from it either and accepts the consequences of his actions. And he isn’t bad to look at either!
9. Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.
This guy is such a dork, but also badass. Powerful and smart, with a cool head (most of the time, which is funny, considering he uses fire). Like Shinya, he can also be a pretty emotional guy, and he uses his past as a reminder to not stray from his goal. He is also in one of my favorite ships, but that’s for another post. Also, did I mention he’s such a dork? lol
8. Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia.
Now this guy is how you do a likable main character. Cocky and sarcastic and loves teasing his friends. He is also has a strong belief in stepping in and doing something about whatever wrongdoings is happening right in front of him, even if it means breaking the law and becoming a vigilante. He’ll do anything he can to set things right for those around him. Not so much of a sad past, but still a fun character! I love his sarcastic attitude at times.
7. Kai Hiwatari/Ray Kon from Beyblade 2001/V-force/G-Revolution
Okay I’m cheating a little bit here, but I just couldn’t decide who I liked more. Let’s begin: Kai: The cold emo Russian/Japanese boy with blue/gray hair. His past is extremely sad and it is understandable why he is such a cold jerk. However, I found his growth in the series amazing. He started off being forced to be a Team Captain for his group. This annoyed him to no end as he wanted nothing to do with the happy bunch. As time went on, however, he gained a soft spot for them and even started to become a real captain, giving advice and caring for their well-being. At first, he was prideful, so very prideful... but as time went on, that pride still remained, but only changed. He takes pride in beating his opponents fair and square and defending his comrades. (Despite betraying them 3 times in 3 seasons but...I chalk up the very first time to PTSD and mind-control of his past...other 2 times... well, that pride problem right?). Also, the irony, a cold emo FIREUSER. Right? lol
Ray: My Chinese catboy! Ray is very friendly and reserved. I was instantly drawn to him when I first saw him. Ray is one of the reasons why white tigers are my favorite animal. He will do anything for his friends and even a stranger if they need help. He always listens to both sides of the story before making a judgement and is the guy to go to for advice. Though later in the series, he does have his own personal battles which causes him to become a bit cocky and jerkish at times, but what can you expect from a nice guy who always put himself last and just wanted to do something for himself for once? Self-care, Ray! Self-care. And he isn’t the only catboy on this list...
6. Kimura Kouichi from Digimon Frontier
Another emo boy! But not a jerk like Kai. Kouichi’s past made me like this character so much and his struggle with his inner demons throughout the series is what made me love him. He was the first character to show me that the power of Darkness does not have to be evil, for without Darkness, there is no Light. He always holds a place in my heart is one of my favorite digi characters.
5. Eizen from Tales of Berseria
I wasn’t sure where to place Eizen. I had to think long and hard. At first I thought at putting him at 7, but then I realized I just loved this dork just a little more than the other characters. The comically serious... no seriously, this guy can fanboy at the silliest things with a straight face, like arguing over the name of a bug...or wanting to build underground tunnels...on an island... ...yeah... ANYWAY, I just love this guy because of his morals and creed. He never compromises his ideals and always faces the consequences of his actions. Yeah another one of those huh? Hm, starting to see a pattern here... Oh yeah, touch his little sister, and he’ll beat your face in and break all 10 of your fingers. Seriously, just...don’t touch Edna. Why couldn’t he be 1,000 years younger (2,000 in Zestiria...)? Such a badass long living adult!
4. Narumi Ayumu from Spiral. It’s a shame this manga isn’t that popular as Ayumu is a great character and his growth is amazing in the manga (not so much in the anime..) His growth is both sad and inspiring. He is such an inspiring character for me. He starts off as a stoic, with having no confidence in himself at all because of his brother, since he is constantly being compared to him and is reminded he can never be as good as his brother (I can relate)... but by the end of the series, despite all the sad things that has happened to him, he learned to smile in the end, no matter how painful. I really can’t go into details about why I love him so much, but you’ll just have to read the manga to find out why!
3. Niwa Daisuke and Dark from D.N.Angel
Yes I’m cheating again, but this is my list, okay?! Daisuke: I love this guy to death. A bit clumsy and timid, but never gives up. Always smiling and managing to find the best in people, even those who keep convincing him he is the enemy, he can end up friends with and change anyone with just that smile. However, even he is not all smiles and has his own concerns... even so, Daisuke doesn’t let such things get him down for long. He is a naturally empathetic person, and I have never seen him cry for himself. He cries for others, but also knows when to be reserved.
Dark: I wasn’t sure if I wanted Dark here or Hiwatari Satoshi, as they both have equally sad pasts. However, seeing as Dark lived for over 400 years and still manages to put up a cocky womanizing front to spare the feelings of others, Dark won out in the end. Again, can’t go into much detail, but the manga is amazing. I like Manga Dark so much more than his anime counterpart.
2. Sawada Tsunayoshi from Katekyo Hitman Reborn!
Ah yes my favorite series of all time....so then why is Tsuna at number 2?! Well, I’ll get to that when I get to number 1. Like Daisuke, Tsuna is a pretty empathetic person who cares for his comrades. He doesn’t necessarily have a sad past, but his growth is amazing in the series. Because he is around, he managed to help his friends through their own emotional turmoils and is just the light of the series to everyone.
1.5 Zeno from Yona of the Dawn/Akatsuki no Yona
Zeno and my number 1 favorite have ALOT in common, which is why I put him at a 1.5. Despite this, Zeno does have alot of things I like him for him. I love the fact that Zeno does not hesitate to help his family or be in pain for them when the situation calls for it. It is the only thing he can do to help and despite always being in pain, he would rather have all the pain in the world than to have pain inflicted on his family. That is what I love about him most. Of course, his silly childish side is so lovable too! Him and Eizen can talk about the suckiness of living a long life together...
1. Train Heartnet from Black Cat.
Of course, for this guy, I strictly talking about the manga, not the anime...the anime just does not show how awesome and badass he is.
Like Zeno, he is also a very empathetic person who always wants to protect his family. What I like about Train the most is, though, like Zeno, despite having one of the saddest pasts, and has all the reason in the world to go around being bitter and emo, he decides not to. He decides it’s better to smile, have fun, and make the most out of life. He does have some tendencies to become emo, but only when the situation calls for it. And despite being childish and silly, always having fun, he never let’s that get in the way of being serious and protecting those close to him when needed. He always tries to cheer everyone up in a bad situation, and is not above asking for help when he really needs it. Not to mention, he’s a catboy and left-handed at that, like me! All my favorite things in one!
