Just so we're on the same page, what I was refering to was a post that said that an engineer who understood the steam engine when it was created would be able to think of a fission reactor as a black box that produced heat for the regular steam turbine.

That alone is fine. In fact, if I had to bet I'd say that fusion reactors will end up using steam.

What I take issue with, which no one in this thread has said, is when that sentiment gets extrapolated to suggest that there has not been any progress in electrical generation outside of better and better heat production machines. The reason I brought up photovoltsic cells was because the theory of the photoelectric effect is something that such an past engineer would have to catch up on to understand the energy economy of today.

That being said, you don't have to go as far out as space to see a use for thermoelectric generators. They're a part of coal power plants for capturing otherwise wasted heat.

You may notice that this not the main generator of power, however, it is a very important factor for economic effeciency in power production.

So for example, a thermoelectric generator put onto a car isn't going to make it stop being a gasoline powered machine, but having this as a more effecient alternator definitely impacts the commercial viability of the product via fuel effeciency.

Regarding fusion power, I won't pretend to be an expert in the field, but I am given to understand that a significant amount of the energy produced in a fusion reaction is electromagnetic radiation, and being able to harness that effeciently is an open question. Like, is using a boiler for that the best or is a combination of the photoelectric and auger effects, as per the colliding beam fusion reactor going to be the ticket? Doubtful, considering that it hasn't succeeded but I don't know, I don't have the numbers on that.

It certainly would be funny to me if that direct energy capture ends up being the difference though because it means our past engineer would have to learn a whole heck of a lot more to account for that generation.

I hope that if fusion becomes commercially viable that one big reason it does so is because they go with a direct to electricity energy conversion rather than a steam turbine because of all the people on here endlessly repeating that "it always comes down to steam!!!" when that is very much not a guarentee.

Like photovoltaic cells, something incredibly common and that laypeople will likely have interacted with and seen in their lives, are a counterexample.

I understand if the only other things were like thermoelectric generators which are mostly obscured, but that's very much not the case. The average person can identify a solar panel.

For those of you who may not be aware, there are temporary email services such as guerilla mail or mailnesia which allow you to instantly access a disposable, receive only email account. This can be used to sign up for services that you expect to receive spam from, or just for privacy reasons.

( While there are some cases where browsing on an unencrypted connection to a website that uses http can leak sensitive information, the baseline has become more secure over time. which is to say VPNs are not necessary for the average person despite what ads may claim.

I would be interested in hearing with the scammers would have said if the author had brought out the VPN advertising line but this is out of scope. )

The point is that you kind of have to pass a fallout style skillcheck when in the midst of a situation created by an attacker. Being in that emergency state otherwise means you will stay vulnerable.

And being constantly vigilant to avoid that sucks. While it does work, the behaviors that compromise ptsd are "disordered" for a reason.

Really, the rarely talked about part here is that income inequality sucks for the people that have more too ( and it applies to people that are just economically secure rather than straight wealthy ). In different ways, but still very real.
