Community Solidarity: Aid Efforts For Families Hit By Natural Disaster
Tumblr media
In the aftermath of the recent natural disaster that struck our area, the local community has banded together to extend a helping hand to families impacted by the catastrophe. Despite the widespread damage inflicted by the disaster, stories of empathy, support, and unity have surfaced, underscoring the strength and compassion of our community members.
Immediate Assistance
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, local authorities, along with various community organizations and volunteers, swiftly mobilized to provide emergency assistance to those affected. Temporary shelters were set up to accommodate displaced families, while food, water, and medical supplies were distributed to ensure the well-being of residents amidst the crisis. The collective efforts of first responders and volunteers played a crucial role in addressing the most pressing needs of the community in the initial stages of the disaster.
Neighborly Support
As news of the disaster spread, individuals and businesses from neighboring communities stepped forward to offer their support and solidarity. Donations poured in, ranging from essential supplies and clothing to monetary contributions aimed at aiding the recovery efforts. The outpouring of generosity and goodwill from both near and far demonstrated the interconnectedness of communities and the willingness to stand in solidarity during times of adversity.
Empowering the Affected
Recognizing the long-term impact of the disaster on affected families, local organizations and support groups have launched initiatives aimed at empowering individuals to rebuild their lives. Counseling services and mental health support have been made available to help residents cope with trauma and emotional distress. Additionally, workshops and training sessions focused on disaster preparedness and resilience are being conducted to equip community members with the necessary skills and knowledge to mitigate future risks.
Rebuilding Together
As the community begins the arduous task of rebuilding homes and restoring infrastructure, volunteers have rallied together to offer their time and expertise in reconstruction efforts. Clean-up operations are underway to clear debris and debris-laden areas, while construction teams are working tirelessly to repair damaged homes and public facilities. The collaborative spirit displayed by volunteers underscores the collective determination to rebuild stronger and more resilient communities in the face of adversity.
A Beacon of Hope
Amidst the devastation wrought by the natural disaster, stories of resilience, compassion, and hope have emerged, serving as a beacon of light in dark times. The unwavering support and solidarity displayed by the local community reaffirm the strength of human spirit and the power of coming together in times of crisis. As the recovery journey continues, the bonds forged through adversity will serve as a testament to the indomitable resilience of our community and its ability to overcome challenges, united as one.

“Vegans are privileged!” “Vegans are are classist!”
These accusations, ironically very often made by well of carnists, that veganism is the somehow “inaccessible and privileged” are extremely common to hear (and especially popular on tumblr) but they are also incredibly inaccurate. These accusations are often used both to try to shut down any vegan advocacy, and as a smokescreen and defense mechanism for individual carnist actions.
When it comes to the cost of a vegan diet it’s a common misconception that a vegan diet is more expensive than non-vegan one, however, this is absolutely not the case. Not only is a plant-based diet is by far the least expensive one on the planet pound per pound, with some of the cheapest and most nutritious staple foods in any supermarket and worldwide being the vegan staple foods such as rice, beans, soy, grains, lentils, potatoes, pasta, frozen and canned fruit and veg etc. But animal flesh/secretions are so often the most expensive products you will find in supermarkets and for much of the world, meat and animal products are a luxury item! (and as a vegan, myself, and most other vegans I know are not in the least well off financially) In fact in the US for example, most vegans are in actually on the lower end of the economic scale and most of the world’s poorest people subsist on a primarily plant-based diet.
It’s important to recognize that in the small number of cases where, although animal products aren’t needed for any health condition (quite the opposite, and the lack of nutrition training doctors receive and the disservice so many do by peddling incorrect nutrition “info” can have massively negative effects, especially on those with chronic illness/disabilities) for a minority of people the complete boycott of animal exploitation is not possible and practicable (such as the case with needed medications for example) at least temporarily, this falls completly within the definition of veganism. Vegans fully acknowledge that in regards to food for example, a small number of people genuinely do not have the option of a fully plant-based diet, at least at this current time in their life and for these people, certain animal products are reasonably necessary to maintain health even though they do their best in all other areas of animal exploitation. This is completely in line with veganism. Veganism is simply about doing your individual best as far as is possible and practicable as a consumer to avoid supporting animal exploitation, exploitation which results in soo much unjustifiable suffering and cruelty, and doing your best is something anyone can do.
Vegans are from all places and all walks of life, City vegans, country vegans, homeless vegans, vegans of benefits, broke student vegans, working class, disabled vegans, vegans still living at home etc. Vegans from every country and at every age and background. Not only do these kinds of accusations peddle false stereotypes about veganism, but they also imply that caring about animal rights is exclusively the domain of the wealthy and privileged which is not only erasive to so many vegans but is pretty darn insulting.

Most of these are really fab ideas! But I do just want to push back though on this section, because its most importantly a matter of injustice, not just environmentalism.:
“•eat less meat. again, this can be a priveledge for some, but i’ve been able to make some veggie/vegan meals for much cheaper than meat alternatives. they can be tastier and i can’t stress enough how AWFUL meat farming is for the environment. it’s so bad. SO bad”
~ We shouldn't be urging people to simply “reduce” the amount of animal flesh (or secretions like eggs and calves weaning milk) they they consume, we need to be really clear here, that aside from being devastating to the environment, choosing to buy animal flesh/secretions when it is at all possible an practicable to avoid doing so is also deeply unethical. Paying for the brutal exploitation, torture and murder of other sentient beings for your own personal pleasure, convenience, habit etc. is absolutely unjustifiable if you have any level of consideration for others. When it comes to issues of injustice, such as the injustice inflicted onto non human animals within animal agriculture, reducetarianism is not the answer. Its never the answer, and its something we don't urge for any other form of injustice.
youtube
~ Not paying for the flesh and secretions of exploited, tortured and murdered animals is also not a “privilege” in the way its being portrayed here. Yes, its a privilege in the sense that you have the privilege of being able to choose your own food, having food at all etc. But its essentially it’s a privilege in the same way that having access to the internet to read the OP is a privilege.
But what is far more “privileged” than choosing not to support one of the worst, if not the worst industry in existence? Having the privilege to be able to pay for the flesh and secretions of heavily subsidised by the taxpayer animal flesh and secretions. All packed up nice and tidy in neat packaging, were you get to pay others to exploit, torture and murder these animals on your behalf. To be able to eat eggs without having to murder baby chicks yourself, to be able to have a bacon sarnie without having to listen to the screams of pigs being burned from the inside out in gas chambers. To be able to buy milk without having to physically steal babies away from their mothers yourself. That's miles more privileged than simply eating a plant based diet, A diet which is by far the least expensive one on the planet pound per pound. With the cheapest and most nutritious staple foods in any supermarket and worldwide being vegan staple foods  such as rice, beans, soy, grains, lentils, potatoes, pasta, frozen and canned fruit, and veg etc.
Heck I mean we know that those who eat a plant based diet, such as vegans, are actually on average on the lowest incomes compared to non vegans. WE are poorer, And one only has to take a quick google search to find a wealth of information and tips to eat plant based on a low income. And I will link to some sources of info below.

some cheap swaps you can make to be more eco friendly, because sometimes it’s a prevelidge to be able to make these decisions (none of these ideas are fresh or spicy, this is intended as more of a master post) :
•thrift instead of “shop”. Fast fashion brands (new look, primark, h&m, top shop, etc) are AWFUL for the environment. They may be less easy to access for some people but thrifing is often cheaper and stops perfectly good used clothes from ending up on a landfill.
•staying on the subject of clothes, if your clothes are too damaged to be donated, there are plenty of ways you can repurpose them! my personal favourite is making them into rags because it’s super easy but you can do a bunch of super creative stuff with old clothes for next to no cost! you can make art, make dog toys, blankets. the possibilities are basically endless
•bamboo toothbrushes are slightly pricier than plastic ones, but in my experience they do last longer which makes them more cost effective after all, and bamboo grows super quick so it’s one of the best materials you can use to save the environment
•walk where you can (or cycle if you have a bike). This one is not revolutionary. it costs nothing to walk and it’s better for the environment than taking a car or bus. if you have to use some other mode of transport, always try and take public (please be safe with covid, wear a mask and don’t take unnecessary risk) or car share
•Reusable water bottles. They will save SO much money in the long term. SO much money. and SO much plastic. whilst we’re on the topic, if you have any single use plastic water bottles you can repurpose them for so many things. you can use them to make self watering plants, use them in art, or even just reusing them as water bottles is better than throwing them away after one use
•this one is slightly more expensive. this is what i mean when i say it’s a priveledge to be eco friendly sometimes. people who menstruate, if you can, i would highly recommend in investing in reusable period products. i hated the menstual cup, but period underwear of reusable pads are also options. they are expensive imo (minimum wage doesn’t leave me with a whole lot) but saving up for them has saved me SO much money and so much waste
•again, not revolutionary but reusable bags. you can get them for hella cheap, they can be fashion statements, and if you always keep one in your bag or your car or whatever, you’ll cut down on so much plastic waste over your life time
•this may be the most expensive one on my list, but if you shave, getting a reusable shaver is MAGICAL. imo it gives a much better shave and you need to replace the blades so much less frequently than you’d have to replace a disposable razor. the one i use is £20, but you can get them for slightly cheaper. i’ve made my money back with this one over only a few months
•eat less meat. again, this can be a priveledge for some, but i’ve been able to make some veggie/vegan meals for much cheaper than meat alternatives. they can be tastier and i can’t stress enough how AWFUL meat farming is for the environment. it’s so bad. SO bad
•the last one, and possibly my favourite, protest. no matter what people tell you, it is not the individuals who are destroying the planet, it is the companies, the governments, the billionaires. where you can do so, stand up to these assholes, voice your opinion. sign petitions. if you can afford to, donate to charities who are doing the same thing.
i want to stress for you not to feel guilty if you can’t do anything on this list. for so many people it is so hard to be able to do these things. some of them aren’t accessible. i can’t remember where i heard this quote, so if anyone knows please tell me and i’ll credit it, but one of my favourite things i’ve heard in relation to all this is “you can never do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all the good you can do”
also i’m such a small tumblr no one will see this but if anyone does and they want some more ideas, which are probably slightly more expensive but definitely more “out of the box” then let me know :)

Hey guys! So every Tuesday and Sunday I join #foodnotbombs otherwise known as #communitysolidarity at whole foods or Trader Joe's and we do pick ups and then we meet at a location and we give out food for free. We pick up loads of donated food and literally give it out for free. We have families, homeless and other needy people come down and this helps them so much. Vegan and vegetarian groceries such as packaged items, fresh produce, bath items, and even donated clothes and on the weekends we give out hot vegan food that Jon makes at home. We rely on volunteers using their own cars, their own time and their own money to help us come pick up, deliver and give out food. As you can see Jon's car is super super full. This is how he and many of us drive. But Jon's car is breaking down. Community solidarity needs a van in order to be able to deliver more food more efficiently. We've been holding a fundraiser for 60,000 for a specific cargo van that will last him a really long time. Jon does this every single day. Hes a rockstar. He's dedicated his life to helping others, and brought so many people along as well. Helping in this way has changed our lives as well as the lives of many others. We're asking that you help us get a van to continue doing that. If you go to veganfoodrescue.com you can read all about the organization, what we do and how you can help. Please consider donating and sharing, reposting, whatever you have to do to get the word out. Food is not a privilege, it's a nature made right. And we're here to make sure of that. Please help! Thank you! #veganfood #veganfoodrescue #longisland

Today we got a late start at the BedStuy Food Not Bombs community food share in Von King Park after the @communitysolidarity van suffered some weather related damage en route. Despite the delay, hundreds of boxes of vegetarian groceries by Community Solidarity were handed out. Thanks to @greenehillfoodcoop @perelandrabk for consistently contributing food. We appreciate you! Also vegan meals prepared lovingly by @feedthepeople_bedstuy were shared with our community. Please support and make contributions to @communitysolidarity. They bring the bulk of the food we have each week and not only that, but they organize five other food shares per week in Long Island! They are an official 501c3 nonprofit so get your workplace and others to make donations as well! All are welcome to join us in Von King Park at the corner of Marcy and Lafayette (just outside the dog run) any Saturday just before 3pm. Come and help out or just get some vegetarian food! #foodnotbombs #ayudamutua #solidaritynotcharity #mutualaid #spreadlove #anarchism #scarcityisalie #communitysolidarity #strongisland #foodislovefoodislife #anarquismo #spreadthelove #goodworks #anarchist #freeganism #feedthepeople #foodisaright #anarchismo #freegan #0waste #communitycare #communitysupport #neighborshelpingneighbors #bedstuybrooklyn #gifteconomy #bedstuy #bedstuydoordie #freefoodforall #buildcommunity #sharingiscaring (at Herbert Von King Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CK-nEvEjMzs/?igshid=1etwha6n40xte
