Prompt: In a spring mood!! Put a flower in the comments or ask box and I’ll write about where it grows in Beleriand, and its symbology and usage! Thank you all for your patience as I go through these! Previous entries in the spring flower game tag!
Anonymous requested: Pasque flower/Pulsatilla vulgaris
I included a few thoughts on other flowers in the pulsatilla family, I hope that’s ok!
The pasque flower is a small purple flower in the buttercup family. It is found in pine forests, slopes and fields and prefers grounds rich in calcium.
In Beleriand it likely grows in parts of Dorthonion especially in the heathlands and near Ladros. It could also grow in the middle regions in more open and hilly areas such as near Dimbar, Dor Dínien and further south in Amon Ereb and parts of Estolad.
Other flowers in this family could also grow in Beleriand; the spring pasqueflower for example I imagine grows in Thargelion, Ard Galen and parts of Hithlum. The alpine pasqueflower grows further up in the Ered Wethrin and the white pasqueflower grows near Nargothrond.
Anonymous mentioned this to me as well and in my research I found that the common pasqueflower flower was rumored to grow where blood had been spilled and upon barrows. This reminds me of a headcanon I’ve wanted to talk about for awhile; Many of the Edain who died on the journey to Dorthonion, Brethil and Hithlum are buried in Dimbar. While many of the hills in this desolate land are natural, some were created The burial customs of the Edain of this time were mostly lost and so the graves are forgotten. I like to imagine these flowers growing upon the hills there
Most of these species are poisonous to humans and to a lesser extent, elves. The spring pasqueflower especially is associated with death, especially death by the cold, by both humans and elves of Hithlum.
The common pasqueflower grew near the last Fëanorian settlement upon Amon Ereb, one of the only perennial flowers to return for several years

YELLOWSTONE COLONIES SEASONS
let’s start off with something nice and simple: seasons!
yellowstone national park is a sprawling landscape located in the temperate coniferous forest biome, which is marked by warm summers and cool winters. being temperate, the land does cycle through four seasons—but, they’re not clearly defined by deciduous forest standards of 3-month-long springs, summers, autumns, and winters. additionally, because the dominant tree type is evergreens, observing the changes of the leaves is not a reliable indicator of the season.
because of this, the yellowstone cats have developed their own names, lengths, and identifiers for their seasons, where they look to animal behaviors to determine the current one!
THE BLOOM
the bloom is the equivalent of early spring, with march being the only month of this season. it is named after how the land wakens from its winter slumber, ‘blooming’ into a flourishing land of plenty once more. the most common indicators of the arrival of the bloom are:
the appearance of mountain bluebirds, western meadowlarks, ospreys, and american robins
the emergence of grizzly bears from hibernation
and humans snowplowing the park's interior roads
THE THAW
the second season is called the thaw, which equates to late spring and the entirety of summer. its duration is april to august, and it is called the thaw as it is the season when animal activity really kicks up. winter fully sheds its grip on the environment, and the cats do not yet have to prepare for the next freeze. it is marked by:
APRIL
the appearance of ruby-crowned kinglets and wilson's snipes
the emergence of black bears, marmots, ground squirrels, and chorus frogs from hibernation
bison calving
bison and elk returning to higher elevations, with elk dropping and regrowing their antlers
growth of buttercups, shooting stars, and pasqueflowers
and an increase in human visitors and cars on the road
MAY & JUNE
elk, moose, pronghorn, and bighorn sheep calving
wolf pups emerging from their dens
cutthroat trout starting to spawn
ruffed grouse starting to drum
growth of glacier lilies and bitterroot
water levels rising due to snowmelt
and humans fishing in the rivers
JULY & AUGUST
bison rut
water levels dropping
wildfires are more prone to occur
and a greater increase in human visitors and cars on the road
THE FEAST
the feast is the most important season, being their autumn before winter. taking place from september to october, the third season is named for how animals prepare for hibernation by becoming hyperphagic and stocking up on food! the traditional indicators of the start of this season are:
elk rut
animals preparing for hibernation
deciduous trees entering fall colors
snow accumulating at higher elevations
and a decrease in human visitors and cars on the road
THE FREEZE
the final season is called the freeze, which is appropriately named for being the colonies’ winter! grueling and arduous, the freeze tends to be the most challenging season to survive through, especially if one inadequately prepared during the feast. it spans november to february, and is signified by:
bighorn sheep rut
bison and elk migrating to lower elevations
mule and whitetail deer shedding and regrowing their antlers
coyotes and foxes snow diving
snow accumulating at lower elevations
and a greater decrease in human visitors and cars on the road

Check out these beautiful purple flowers. The Pasqueflower (or pasque flower) is part of the genus pulsitilla and is named after the Hebrew word for passover – pasakh. It is visible across meadows and prairies in the springtime, mostly in Asia, Europe and North America. Common names include – wind flower, prairie crocus, Easter flower and meadow anemone.
Thank you for supporting a small business.

Hey can I say that your flower meaning info dump is a blessing? Cuz I used to go for hours on the internet for Hanahaki Stuff and only have the really common stuff.
And then you decided to info dump literally everything I was looking for those years ago. Thank you so much!
Oh good! Honestly, I had to buy a book to get most of my flower meanings and have been gradually memorizing them because there is SHIT for definitions online! If you look up flowerpaedia, it's worth a purchase if youre super into flower meanings. Also character bouquets are fun so 👀
Example :
Yinu's Mama
Pink Carnation - Motherly love, encouragement
White Rose - protection
Red Clover - protection from danger
Petunia - do not give up hope, anger, resentment, priorities
Peanut - aggressive energy, beauty
Love lies bleeding - lost love, broken heart
Pasqueflower - you must let go, calm down

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Montana wildflowers 😍 I’m a lucky duck in that some of my very favorite flowers also happen to be some of the earliest bloomers!!
Top left is my very favorite flower of all time: the shooting star.
All the little guys with 5 petals +/- are all various species of phlox
The middle right is a pasqueflower! I spent pretty much the entire last 24 hours trying to come up with the name of them when I was describing them to Bridger on our hike yesterday, wondering why they hadn’t bloomed yet this year.... and then here they were today!!
Bottom left is some species of wild daisy. They’re pretty cool in that the flowers grow and bloom while they’re still close to the ground, and then the stalk grows AFTER the flowers, so the flowers are raised higher day by day! In a couple days, maybe a week, these guys will be ~6 inches tall. No point wasting metabolic energy growing a stem when you can just jump right into the inflorescence. Weirdly a common growing habit in Montana, idk if it’s common elsewhere.

Two non-gardener girls and some pasqueflowers
Supernatural fanfiction.
A3O
Hello! This is my contribution for the wayward spring challenge organized by @waywardsisterslove (if you don’t want the tag don’t hesitate to tell me and I’ll remove it). Please check this out if you want.
I’ll try to do the whole challenge, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it all on time.
Anyway this is the first week, the theme was “spring flowers” I choose to use pasqueflowers as they were the first result I got when I tried to find out what kind of flowers grew in South Dakota, and also I once heard they are known to repel evil (trough I can’t find the info again).
Anyway, here is a cute (I hope) Claire x Kaia fic. This might be pre-relationship, as this is not romance heavy, but this is still definitely written to be a romance.
Also this is set in an alternate universe where the events of “wayard sisters” happened but Kaia is still alive and well, she’s living with Jody and the girls and everything is fine.
Hope you’ll enjoy it!
-Are these pasqueflowers?
Claire turned up to the other young woman. Kaia had just closed the door behind her and was now leaning on the wall. To say she hadn’t heard coming was a lie: Kaia wasn’t what one would call loud, but she didn’t try to sneak on people either, and Claire was a hunter, almost nothing could sneak on her. She was still surprised to hear her talk: usually her new housemate would just stand there and watching. The change was a welcome one.
-Yeah, Jody said they are used in some talismans and are low maintenance, and she brought some, so I figured I might as well plant them in the yard today. You know, so they could grow up.
To her surprise, Kaia actually moved from the wall to next to her.
-Are you good at gardening?
The remark made Claire laugh.
-No, that’s the first time I do that. But I figured since I taught myself how to use various kind of weapons… how hard can it be?
An idea suddenly crossed her mind.
-Are you?
Kaia’s smile was sincere and beautiful when she answered, and it wasn’t the first time in their short common life that Claire fond herself wishing the other girl smiled more often.
-No, not at all. I never gardened in my entire life.
They chuckled, before Claire went back to work.
-Okay then, it’s just you and me, two non-gardener girls and a bunch of pasqueflowers. I’m sure we’re gonna figure this out, one way or another.
Patience was at school, Alex and Jody were working, and the flowers had to be in the yard by the time the sheriff come home.
-You want to do something nice for her? For Jody.
Sometimes Claire wondered who the psychic in this hose was. It seemed that both Kaia and Alex both had the power to read her thought. Or perhaps she wasn’t very good at hiding her emotions.
-Kinda. Out of character much?
-I don’t think so. On the contrary, it seems like something you would do.
For a second, Claire felt like she was really really bad at hiding her emotion, especially for someone whose job implied a whole lot of lying. She felt her face falling, and quickly redirected her gaze to the flowers, gritting her teeth.
-I’m sorry if I’m overstepping.
Now Kaia seemed like she was hurt, and Claire felt guilty. She hadn’t meant to involve the other girl in the middle of her complicated relationship with Jody. Her complicated relationship with parental authority in the large sense if she was honest with herself.
-You’re not. I’m the one who is a stubborn idiot when it comes to this.
Strangely, she didn’t mate Kaia so long ago, but she trusted her with her feelings. There was something in the other girl that radiated kindness, despite everything she had been through.
She felt Kaia’s shoulder touch hers.
-You’re not an idiot. You’re a wonderful person. You all are. I know it must be difficult for you… for you all…
Claire raised her head, making eyes contact. She felt bad: she was supposed to be the one taking care of the newcomer in Jody’s hose, not the other way around.
-Thank you.
-It’s the least I can do.
The hunter didn’t know if she should be confused or upset by the answer.
-What do you mean?
-You took me in, and you gave me free shelter and food.
-You helped us save Sam and Dean, that’s the least we can do.
-It’s just I’m not…
-Used to it?
Kaia nodded silently.
-You’ll get used to it in due time. Jody is… overflowing with affection and protective instinct. A little too much sometimes, but you’re a good person. Everything will be fine.
-I’m not sure about that.
-It will. And you are.
Kaia sighed.
-Patience is already getting along so well with you all…
-She’s her, and you’re you. And you have nothing to be ashamed of if you want to take your time.
The dream-walker shyly laughed and looked down, rupturing their eye contact.
-I just… I don’t know were to start to get to know you.
Claire let her hand slide until she met Kaia’s.
-How about we start with planting those flowers?
I am so bad at writing romance. I mean does it seem like romance? It is. I know in most of my fics I say “just see it the way you want” but here it was definitely written to be a romance.
As usual, I’m sorry for any mistakes. Hope you enjoyed and have a nice day!

Pasqueflower / Western Anemone (Anemone occidentalis) Meadow Near Paradise, Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington, 2014.
When I was a child, we called these "beargrass,” though I learned later that is a quite distinct species also quite common in the park.
