been thinking about why former commissar ammabel recruits yrliet

and I think it's her recognising the meeting with yrliet as an opportunity to put her money where her mouth is, so to speak, and actively try to go beyond just blindly following imperial dogma

she's not comfortable welcoming yrliet into the retinue. but the aeldari intrigues her. here she is, willing and eager to work with humans. and she's never actually interacted with an aeldari before. so why not? how does she truly know that yrliet is dangerous? she tells herself this to try and push down the instinctive fear, the suspicion, the sound of heinrix's tutting and disappointed sighs echoing in her head. she said she was going to think for herself now, so let's give the xenos-- yrliet a chance.

and then, after their journey through the jungle, ammabel thinks - with some pride - look, I was right to do this! and she commits. no matter how dismissive yrliet is towards her and humanity, no matter how suspicious she can act at times, no matter if she accidentally leads us into a drukhari trap, ammabel's gonna make it work.

So I was talking with an old salt who came over while me and the boys where sling dice and shooting mechs and told me a tale of 40k Third edition.

Apparently at the time it was possible to attach a Commissar to any Imperial unit, or something like that, and at a local tournament a guy had attached a Commissar to Marneus Calgar and his escort while playing against Tyranids. The old salt didn't relay to me why that was a good idea.

Now, there was a rule that had Commissar's shoot the model with the highest leadership in the unit the Commissar was attached to in the event of a retreat.

So this guy decides he does not want to engage with the Tyranids and moves to break off. The Tyranid player asks him if he was sure; guy says yes. He then remembers that retreat rule.

So the Commissar shoots Marneus Calgar, Chaptermaster of the Ultramarines, dead on the spot.

Ogryn soldier finds a baby after battle. No parent in sight, area is desolated and all other civilians are either dead or evacuated. Ogryn sees this and goes "My baby now". Keeps baby secret from the commissar (like a kid hiding a kitten from their parents). The other ogryn knows though and together they put their shared braincell to use to raise the baby.

Plot twist, baby is a shard of the Emperor. Ogryn does not realize because they see baby glowing or some shit and just go "some lil' ones do that" and move on.
