Unmasking Mil: The Imperative Sub-Fractional Unit Of Measurement
Born out of the necessity of precision in various industries, units of measurement have established themselves as essential elements for numerous professions. Among these rudimentary parts of technical and scientific verges, lies the frequently used yet often misunderstood unit called ‘mil.’ Not to be mistaken with its phonetic twin ‘mile,’ this minuscule unit plays a major role in defining thinness and thickness in several fields. Fundamentally, one ‘mil’ equals 1/1000 (0.001) inch – a seemingly minute detail that everyone from industrial CNC machinists to electronics engineers can’t afford to overlook.

Welcome to another episode of Devon Overanalyzes a Thing That’s Probably Nothing, Because Autism. Today’s subject: Husk’s bar and it’s relation to the RadioHusk dynamic.
I find it interesting that, aside from altering the name of the hotel, Alastor allowed Charlie’s design to remain the same, even after his commercial mocked the “tacky circus” theme. The only portions of the hotel he ever constructs are his radio tower (his space), and the bar (the space of the only soul he’s actively trying to control).
From the outside, Alastor’s tower blends in fairly cohesively with the rest of the hotel, but the bar is so jarringly tailored to his style that even Lucifer reacts strongly upon first seeing it. Though Alastor allows some casino theming to indicate it’s where Husk belongs, the bar space is ultimately mostly his bayou aesthetic. Not only that, but if you look carefully, wings that resemble Husk’s flank the bar and almost mimic taxidermy next to all the animal bones. I like to imagine this is a subtle jab about how Alastor “caught” Husk and clipped those wings.
I know that clip of Husk and Angel putting up the bar sign lasted 2 seconds in the background of the finale, but that moment is so important: Alastor didn’t play a part in the remodel, meaning Husk was probably given creative freedom to design it. This new bar is finally Husk’s, and for a guy who had nothing and was starved for connection, this is pretty significant.
I’ll be interested to see how Alastor interacts with that space next season and to find out how he’ll react to Husk gaining confidence through seizing control of it.

Today's Black History Month illustration is of Paul R. Williams, the first Black member of the American Institute of Architects.
Paul Revere Williams was born in Los Angeles in 1894 and was orphaned at four years old. Immediately after high school, he landed internships and jobs at local architecture firms despite the racial prejudice. Williams took classes at the Los Angeles Beaux-Arts School and then attended USC’s School of Engineering. He became a certified architect in 1915.
In 1920, Williiams was appointed to the first Los Angeles City Planning Commission, and the year after, he received a license to practice architecture in California and started working for John C. Austin. In 1922, he opened his own firm and served as an architect for the Navy during WWII. In 1923, Williams became the first Black person inducted into the American Institute of Architects.
He was an outstanding draftsman, and had the skill of rendering drawings upside down. He developed the skill so that his white clients (who might have been uncomfortable sitting next to a black architect) could see his drawings right side up across the table from him.
Williams designed over 2,000 homes, including the homes of Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz, Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
Along with designing homes for the wealthy and the stars, he designed affordable homes, public housing, civic, commercial and institutional buildings. Williams was also part of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) planning and design team.
Some of his works include the Golden State Mutual Life building in LA, St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, and the Los Angeles Superior Court.
He spearheaded the redesign of the Beverly Hills Hotel, a renovation which cost $3 million. The cursive letters on its sign are based on his own handwriting. Outside of LA, he remodeled buildings and spaces for Howard University (dentistry school, architecture and engineering college.)
He received many awards including the NAACP Spingarn Medal and USC’s Distinguished Alumni Award. In 1957, he became the first African American to become an AIA Fellow. In 2017, Williams was posthumously awarded the AIA Gold Medal, America’s highest honor for an architect. He was the first Black architect to receive the Gold Medal.
Williams passed away in 1980 at 85, leaving a mark on West Coast architecture and aspiring Black architects.
I’ll be back tomorrow with another illustration and story!

"The People" and Tourist Expansion
"Tourist expansion ruins local life" is not something I fully agree with. In fact, I actually think it can help with promoting and amplifying the history of a certain area. But that isn't what this post is; rather, this little dive through history is to explain why tourism and its subsequent expansion, tramples access, the people's will and free spaces in search of more profit.
This post will mainly base itself off the story of the Portside Park, mentioned in chapter 2 of Blomley's 2004 book "Unsettling The City: Urban Land and The Politics of Property". Whilst its main focus point is gentrification, a topic much more complex and storied than this, I believe the point it makes applies just as well to tourist expansion and its destructive capabilities.
The Portside Park, or as it was known by activits at the time CRAB Park, was a small fenced off park area in an otherwise industrial waterfront district [p.46]. The park, owned by the VPC (Vancouver Port Corporation), was seen by the VPC executives and managers to be a desolate and abandoned place. It was "occupied by weeds, rocks and junk, and desperately polluted with toxic silt" and, as described by one VPC representative, "is not a heavily used park." [both quotes from p.47]. This attitude shows clearly what those, less caring of the people's use of the park, was what led to the clash between commercial interests and protesters observed in the summer of 1984 [see Figure 2.9, p.48]. It was the rage of a people who saw, what they believed to be "'the People's Park'" [p.48], being used for something which was anything but for the people. They wanted a compromise, a space that could be "'noncommercial,' that is as consciously different from other proposals for the land, some of which included private 'improvements.'" [p.48]. These private improvements, most likley refer back to remodelling the park, not for the benefit of the locals, but rather for the tourist and gamblers coming into the area [see p.48-49]. Finally, Blomley notes one last quote by one Dunphy M., "'I think our people would feel uncomfortable with and there would be people uncomfortable with us. If development takes the shape that creates that kind of class difference, it could dillute the community's hold on the park'" [p.48-49]. Blomley furhter expands upon this quote on page 168, mentioning exclusion and access to the park as reasons for the protest and blocakdes to occur when and where they did.
To prove that this concept, of capitalist interests phasing out accessibality in search of more profit, is a global one we must look back at Bugibba; specifically the "Perched Beach" and its current privatization.
Bugibba's beaches have been open since the dawn of their opening. They have been spaces where tourists and locals alike can enjoy a nice breeze, the warm water and access to the ocean. In 2006, when the "Perched Beach" was opened as a tourist attraction, it was promised to always be open: "Once again, we shall ensure that the public area remains just that - public: for the free enjoyment of all'" (Borg, 2024). These words have seemingly gone hollow in the minds of those who stand for the public development of Bugibba. Little public funding has gone to it, grants for the construction of property which only hinders public access to it and little enforcing of their shaky 2006 promise are all issues which have led to recent protest. Quoting the editorial posted just about a month ago, "for decades, the laissez-faire attitude of shoreline preservation has led to illegalities" (Times of Malta, 2024). Capitalist interest once again fail to account for the history of Bugibba, made even worse by the unfortunate fact that Bugibba lacks much history to respect/refer back to, to rally activism (refer back to my previous post, "Bugibba and Young (1983)."
The language, the sentiment which was espoused by those unaware of the Portside Park’s history and culture, is similar to that of those who are privatizing the beaches of Bugibba. This is why Bugibba’s history, the history of why its public and available beaches are a cornerstone in Bugibbian life, is important. It is the language that was used by the people of the Seaport, the people of Bugibba and countless other local peoples who have been victims to the trap of tourist expansion. It is this issue, this rabid need for more guests, more tourism and more money flowing into the companies unaware of the history and people they're trampling over. If they do not care for the history, those who do will make them care; make them aware that "the beaches belong to the people" (Times of Malta, 2024).
Thank you for reading. This was a bit more personal because this issue frustrates me to high hell and I fiugred that it was based on at least something, that being the voices of those subjected to overtourism. As always, sources are below. References: Blomley, N. (2004). Unsettling The City: Urban Land and The Politics of Property. Borg, E. (2024). St Paul’s Bay residents to protest over privatisation of public beaches. Times of Malta. (2024). Editorial: The beaches belong to the people.

Who is W, and an Exploration of the TV's We Have Seen
So, as I was perusing awayfrompryingeyes.net, which is fitting, given the handle. (I have the prying eyes, its me.) Not to do this to you, but Webster’s Dictionary…I’m kidding. I am curious about the origin of the phrase, because that might shed some light, but all we really need to know about it is that it has a connotation of nosiness, sneakiness, getting into someone else’s business.
What I saw this time, on reviewing the website, is the specifics of W’s description of the TV and what was on it. In previous posts about framing, I had mentioned that this image, which I assumed was the QA’s picture, given the wooden phone, TV, and red notebook:
You can see this phone, notebook, and TV in this shot. Even lightened, I can’t determine if this is the same TV, but I know that it is the same phone and notebook, and the clock on the left is not included.
So, we have EOVWXY:
I’m not sure on this one still. I think that this is the same tv as the one with the Cinderella cartoon.
W describes their experience as this:
There was something on the old website. We have since remodeled, but everything still feels burned into my mind. Videos, text, crude drawings- Invading this space that had been created. I felt nauseous when I found it. I was Paranoid too, more so than I have been. (emphasis mine)
There are a couple of levels about this statement, so what we know:
In the first image of the TV, it is playing Juliella, and has an image of Barnaby as the fairy godmother and Julie as Juliella, though I can’t remember the exact timeline of the release of this image vs the EOVWXY video.
The images of the TV’s both include the strange wooden phone (toy phone?) and the red notebook. However, both W and QA were in possession of these things at different times. (And the red book includes a description of the first time that someone interacted with the material, which seems to point to W, as QA has their own rant of the same kind in Staff Only)
I can’t tell if there is a car on the left in the second TV image because of the darkness of the photo. Even lightened, I can’t tell, but there is something red-ish in the left corner, though it looks more like a corner than the rounded edge.
We know for certain that the 2nd tv image is in the Staff Room, based on the photo set and the mucky walls.
In the third image of a TV, it is included on a secret page, EOVWXY, which was found by utilizing letters on the website that were misaligned.
I find it really strange that W points to an outside force for the EOVWXY video, as it is very obviously a person filming a TV, in which Wally appears. Wally is definitely not recording that video. Given W’s description in commercials:
When the website first launched, I had found something playing from a very old television in my home. I was compelled to turn it on. I could see something, I could hear it too, but I had nothing to record it with.
This is W saying that they could hear or see something, but they didn’t get a recording. So this isn’t the moment they are referring to? There was some sound to that video, but the picture and the sound may not have recorded well. Why wouldn’t we assume that W is the one filming EOVWXY?
Side note (probably more suited to old person tv post): If you tried to record a tv with a video camera, you saw this kind of thing:
It looked like the show, but you could see a line moving up or down the image. This picture is possibly more specifically a view of shifting the view of the screen. I think this had to do with finding channels with a dial or adjusting the top and bottom of the screen with knobs.
Side note to the side note, this is cool: https://www.hackster.io/news/simulate-changing-the-channel-on-an-old-school-television-with-this-modified-set-cc326518bcf0
This youtube video is a good example of basic old tv function: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoF5KnjF2_s
Really thorough video of an old console tv with a super early VCR:
youtube
I am drowning in nostalgia!
Anyway, if a person was recording a tv with a video camera, as we see in EOVWXY, you would see the lines. (explanation: Lines on old TVs when recording with a video camera are usually caused by a difference in refresh rate between the TV and the camera. The TV's refresh rate is usually 50 or 60 Hz, while the camera's frame rate is usually 24, 25, 29.9, 50, 60, or 120 Hz. The black lines appear because the camera captures pixels that have faded by the time it tries to image them. The lines may also move because the camera and monitor are not synchronized. This phenomenon is called “bar rolls.”) It may be as simple as those bar rolls don’t exist because the show isn’t actually broadcasting. Wally is communicating in a different way.
However, I do think the age of the TV is important. I don’t think Wally is going to show up on a modern LCD television, because I don’t think he understands how they work. He can visit in the TV, because he knows those TV’s. He was on those TV’s and whatever familiarity he gained by being on the show, he is using now to contact us. (I think this makes for a good argument as to why he can be seen and heard on this tv, and why the commercials video came through on this tv. It makes a bad argument for his ability to function on the internet, unless there is a bridge of some kind, like so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfkDq6gkTmQ. This video is of a person using an old style tv to stream. Wally learning about the internet through a tube TV makes sense, but it is a reach at this point. I think if Wally and co were using the TV to directly interact with children, then he would be excited about the increased interactivity of the internet.)
Then:
I had taken a photo and listened to dialogue that I believed to be from the show itself. I felt like an idiot, I hadn’t recorded anything, I was so entranced by what I was seeing.
From this, we can assume that the first picture is what W is talking about. It had image and sound and they took a picture. This firmly establishes W as the photographer of that picture, and in possession of the notebook, the tv, and the phone. There is the possibility that when W says “the show” we are talking about the puppet portion of the universe. Juliella would be more a Special Presentation event if being true to tv history (see my old person post about TV for more information.)
W goes on to say:
Since then I haven’t turned it off. I wouldn’t let that mistake happen to me again, if I kept watching and listening I knew something would come back. I was finally rewarded in December. The channel it appeared on didn’t make any sense, but I didn’t care. Video evidence and audio started playing, one after the other. I’ve captured and compiled together whatever I could. I can’t make sense of anything, older television always felt strange to me anyways. (emphasis mine)
So, we saw a thing in the TV that we didn’t record, the first recording was the Commercials video, which is attributed to a TV, most likely the one in the first image. The channel didn’t make any sense…(more info on my old person tv post) could it be that it was on an aux channel? Or a channel that they don’t get locally? (Like, growing up, I got 10, 12, 13 and sometimes 23. If anything appeared on any of the other channels, I would have been surprised. Also, if we can accept that this is a Sesame Street as an analog, then any channel other than 13, our PBS station, would have seemed odd.)
Then, there is the EOVWXY video that has obstructed sound, and Wally’s eyes fighting through the static. We can’t say for certain that W filmed this video. They only time they mention documenting the happenings is the picture and the video:
Then footage would disappear, I would have to move to another channel, where another would appear and then disappear again. I knew I had to stop though, I was too exhausted and I was tired of waiting through hours of static just to find another commercial. I don’t know how this was happening. But the show never appeared beyond clips of Eddie Dear. I don’t want to post this publicly on the WHRP site, at least not yet. I can’t stomach anything that's happening.
There is the possibility that EOVWXY is filmed by the QA. We have established that the other person who had all three things: tv, red book, and wooden telephone is the QA. In addition, there is a note on the TV on the table that says if the TV breaks, to get it repaired ASAP. In the last photo in the series with the TV, it is a different TV, and even older, so it makes me wonder if the TV finally gave out and they had to replace it with a TV of a similar age so that they could receive the broadcast.
They are tired and have to stop looking, which we found out later that they lost track of three months. So December, they start recording, having to change the channel when the video stopped, flipping around until they found it again. The Commercials video must be the video they are referencing (and they are on the same page). It appears W has edited this video out of clips they found in the static. W describes the video as being mostly Eddie Dear. ”But the show never appeared beyond clips of Eddie Dear.”
But this isn’t true either. The video has a large portion of time devoted to the other characters, in the form of drawings, voice work, and cartoons. Eddie is the only character portrayed as “real.” As discussed before in conversations about framing, there are separate and distinct levels of reality, and this quote pushes us to believe that the puppet form is “the show.” When we see puppets, that is Welcome Home. The cartoons and obsession with the holiday feels like the 1,000 holiday specials we grew up with and came to associate with the holidays. More on this in the old person TV post.
More on this topic later.

Big life update:
We bought a building. It's a commercial building where I will be able to move my studio to the first floor and we can live in the apartment on the second floor.
I feel very fortunate to have been able to secure funding through an organization that helps regional small businesses. I was turned down by traditional lenders back in November, which opened up the pathway that ultimately worked out.
The building is unique, over 100 years old and moderatly well maintained. The floors are wildly uneven in some areas and I will have to consult with professionals over the years to repair some issues which will help prevent further settling.
But after getting booted from my apartment of many years for "remodeling" then living in an office for over a year, it's a very good feeling to "own" somewhere which has running water, a kitchen, and storage space. We have our own shower and bathroom!
I don't know exactly how long before we can move in, there are a fair number of projects I'm in the middle of attending to, but hopefully by the end of the month the majority will be taken care of and I'll have both the studio and living spaces ready.
I've done about two weeks of work in the last 7 days, so the progress is moving along a little quicker than expected. I'm sure the actual big projects won't feel so smooth or quick though. But I'm hoping I'll be able to get contractors scheduled out and everything will be underway for the big repairs.
If anyone is looking to buy, in some cities commercial mixed use properties are in less demand than single family homes, it might be worthwhile to look at that as an option. Our spot was for sale for a few years and the seller was ready to be done with it. In some instances the bubble is deflating if you get creative or think outside of the house box. Good luck everyone.

(Cross-posting from my PF post about this, because I am still fixated)
Apparently e-on VUE and PlantFactory have been abandoned as of May 2024. Their current owner, Bentley Systems, has made them free-to-download with the following notes (slightly edited for clarity):
You may use the programs commercially. This includes any renderings created with VUE and PlantFactory or assets exported from this software. You may retexture, remodel and resell any of the stock content which ships with VUE and PlantFactory. This includes both meshes and textures. Despite PlantCatalog also being freeware, all pre-made plant models therein are copyrighted by Bentley Systems. You may use the models commercially (e.g., embed them into games, share them with clients, or embed them into project files) and you may create renderings, both still or animated, using PlantCatalog models. However, you may not individually resell any models derived from PlantCatalog content on marketplaces. If you want to sell individual or packaged plant models, you may create your own models from scratch in PlantFactory while making sure to not use any textures or metanodes from pre-made PlantCatalog plants.
Recommended system specs:
Windows 64 bit (Windows 8, Windows 10, or Windows 11), macOS 10.14-12* Multi-core CPU (Intel Core I7, I9, AMD Ryzen or Mac Pro), AVX compliant 8GB+ of RAM 4GB+ of free Hard Disk space (on the drive hosting the OS)
I must stress how ridiculously useful this is for 3D terrain and vegetation creation. The previous commercial license for smaller teams ran $75 per month or $750 per year. The development team's videos are still up on YouTube, including tutorials and old example reels and such. Go look
(Image source: this 2013 CGW article.)
#blender#3D art#art resources#landscape#terrain#Work has been a nonsensical slog lately but once I have a free night I am going to be indulging in learning this program

I'm super excited for today's post because tomorrow is officially my birthday! Auntie getting old ya'll lol BUT in honor of my birthday, I wanted to give you guys a little gift! I decided to remodel my original SM Hotel Rooftop lounge with a more upgraded and personal feel. It was super popular amongst everyone, and it was only right a give it a little tweak!
This version of the build is a very special birthday because I did include two areas dedicated for my birthday! In the entry, you will see a photobooth in the corner where the chair and atm machine were previously located. The upstairs terrace has also been renovated with a new seating area and also decorated like a cute little VIP birthday area.
This is all for you guys to have the chance to celebrate my special day with me! I would love to see your sims turning up and taking pics in honor of little ole me!
These items can also easily be removed from the build when you guys are done!
