Street Photography in Chinatown, Bangkok
A type of photography known as "street photography" focuses on capturing people and daily life in open areas of a city. The majority of the time, it is candid, which means the photographer does not stage or guide the subject; Record the scene as it occurs. In any urban or public setting, such as parks, streets, and gatherings of the general public,  street photography  is possible.
Its major objective is to convey a story via the image while also capturing the essence of a situation or time. It frequently entails capturing the interactions between individuals and their surroundings to emphasise the diversity and complexity of daily life.

[ID copied from Alt text: the first photo has the text, "sketch commissions for Gaza." Next to it is a drawing of the artist drawing on their art tablet.
second photo: 4 examples of commission prices and art, modeled by Kim Dokja from Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint in his demon king form. For one dollar: a rough chibi sketch. for 5 to ten dollars: a rough but more detailed sketch. there is more motion in his pose. for 10 to 15 dollars: a cleaner lined sketch with more detail given to the silhouette. for more than 15 dollars: a cleaner sketch with more attention to volume and detail in his outfit and wings. End ID]
For now up until March 10th I'm taking pay what you want sketch commissions for donations to Help Gaza Children, managed by @fairuzfan and Hussam, since from March 4th to the 10th all donations will go to families in Northern Gaza.
Their site is here where you can find more information, like their FAQ, and proof of purchases from donations they've received so far.
You can donate to Help Gaza Children's paypal here. The paypal link is also on their site.
guidelines:
To be upfront, I am a full time college student so expect a two month turnaround. I will give you an update around a month in and again at two months if I don't finish by then.
Please include a visual reference or detailed text description of the character(s) you want drawn, unless I've drawn them before and you're okay with me going with my design.
I can draw OCs, mechs, and furries.
I won't draw real people or anything nsfw.
I reserve the right to refuse a commission and may ask you to choose something else. If you want to know in advance if I'll take it, feel free to DM or send an ask.
Extra characters will be half the price as one character. Please only request up to three characters per category (ex: if you pay $35, you can get 3 characters: 1 for $15 and the other 2 for $10 each. if you pay $6 you can get 3 characters: 1 for $3 and 2 for $1.50 each)
don’t use these for commercial use. personal use (like as icons or headers, or like printing it for yourself) is okay
if you're paying in a currency other than dollars you can let me know and I'll try to adjust the pricing so you get a drawing equivalent to what you paid. I don't want people to pay the equivalent of $20 and get a rough sketch or something.
To get a commission, email me at desklamprey @ gmail.com with a screenshot of the receipt of your donation made after this post was made (3/5/24 at around 2 pm PST), and the details about your request. please censor any personal information in the receipt.

Hi, I got a chibi commission from you a bit ago and was wondering if it was okay to turn it into a keychain? It would be entirely for personal use, not commercial, I just think it would be cute and fun to have. Tysm in advance!
Yes!! I believe on my carrd it answers this question in the [faq section], a little near the bottom.
You can use and print any purchased commission for personal use :) my chibis are made with the intent to be used as pagedolls, so they'd also make very nice stickers or keychains too!
I'm actually waiting on a keychain of my Fizzles chibi right now! I ordered mine from Wooacry (I tried Vograce a while ago but was disappointed with the turnaround time, so I'm trying some other sellers).
Tumblr media
If you get physical prints of my art, I'd be delighted to see photos of the finished product!!!

by Rachel O'Donoghue
On March 6, the United Nations warned that a current conflict that has already killed and displaced millions of people risks triggering “the world’s worst hunger crisis.”
Some of the statement’s key points include:
“A staggering 14 million children are in desperate need of lifesaving assistance”
“Millions of lives and the peace and stability of an entire region are at stake”
“Across the war-torn country, 18 million people are acutely food insecure and five million now face starvation”
“Restricted in their movements by ongoing violence and interference from warring parties and severely underfunded, humanitarian aid workers can barely help those in need”
“Humanitarian assistance was further disrupted after the authorities revoked permits for cross-border truck convoys”
Less than 24 hours later on March 7, the United Nations issued another warning:
“The situation is appalling. Every minute, every hour, it is getting worse”
“In the north, one in six children under the age of two is acutely malnourished…”
“We need to flood the market… with humanitarian goods as well as re-energize the private sector so commercial goods can enter to meet the need of civilians…”
“At the same time, humanitarian supplies via air or sea are ‘not a substitute for what we need to see arrive on land…’”
The first statement was about Sudan, a country that has been racked by a conflict that erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and a paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023.
According to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), which placed Sudan at the top of its Emergency Watchlist last year, nearly 6 million people have been displaced, and more than half the population (24.8 million people) needs humanitarian aid, with 17.7 million people facing crisis-level or worse food insecurity.
The IRC has also stated that amid mass displacement and reports of mass killings, humanitarian access has been severely curtailed.
The second statement was about Gaza and the ongoing aid delivery problems that have affected the Strip as Israel battles Hamas to protect its citizens from harm.
As the United Nations makes clear in its statements, both Sudan and Gaza are facing a humanitarian catastrophe. However, the war in Sudan is impacting a much larger number of people and has gone on for much longer.
One might think that media organizations would think both crises were worthy of attention. After all, the UN statements were published mere hours apart and warned of similarly dire situations.
Alas, not so.
The Guardian and The New York Times, for example, both included details of the UN’s statement about Gaza in their coverage of what was variously described as a “humanitarian disaster” affecting millions of “besieged Palestinians.”
Likewise, both publications covered in depth the March 5 UN statement — signed by several UN rapporteurs — which, among other grotesque and unfounded allegations, accused Israel of “intentionally starving the Palestinian people in Gaza…”
Yet, neither outlet dedicated any coverage to the UN’s statement about Sudan — not a single paragraph was printed about an impending catastrophe that would amount to “the world’s worst hunger crisis.”

I sewed myself the strawberry dress... but made it a modernized 18th century round gown!
Tumblr media
Why yes, I am perched on my bathroom counter because my phone camera is a potato and there was no other way to get a non-blurry photo of the fabric print.
I've been wanting to make one of these dresses since I saw the Bernadette Banner video from a few years ago. Apparently this was a trend on CosTube and I'm just late to the party as always because I'm not a CosTuber.
Anyway, I used Mariah Pattie's fan/arc drafting method to get the conical bodice pattern based off my own measurements. No dress form, no commercial pattern. Doing it this way, it fit nearly perfectly on the first try.
The bodice has a lining layer that laces closed underneath and acts like a pair of stays without me having to make stays. I basically reinvented the wheel with the structured bodice lining, since it turns out Sewstine and Lina Piprek both did something similar for their versions of the robe a la Bernadette. But look how smoothly it fits!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fabric is just a quilting cotton from Joann. It's in no way historically accurate, but I hand sewed the dress anyway because I don't use sewing machines. You can't see the skirt but it hits just below the knee and is 86" in circumference.
Tumblr media
And yes, it has pockets. 18th century style pockets that can be accessed through the skirt side slits, actually 🥰

Ten Pages from the Gazetteer of Time by Jonathan Edelstein
Tumblr media
I maaaaay have overused the drawings of Shaun Tan for this particular bookbind.
I may or may not be sorry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember how I said how First Do No Harm was Jonathan Edelstein's earliest published work? Well, I was correct. But before that, Jonathan did write another piece of short fiction that is not officially published in any magazine or anthology. In fact, this story can only found in two places across the internet; a series of old Facebook pasts and a fiction thread on AlternateHistory.com.
It is this. Ten Pages from the Gazetteer of Time.
To describe it is... difficult. It is akin to Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities but focusing more on history, cultural evolution, and the relationship between cities and people. In fact, Jonathan has said this short story is inspired by Italo Calvino's work, and it really shows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Printing the cover & endpapers was an experiment unto itself. Early on, I wanted to use the drawings of Shaun Tan (who has given permission for anyone to print his drawings, so long as it's fully non-commercial) as they have the perfect vibe for this book. But I also wanted these prints to last long without getting smudged by my naturally sweaty fingers.
So I cut pieces of drawing board paper to A4 size, sent them through the printer, cut the drawings to appropriate size, and sprayed them with an non-acidic, acrylic-based gloss varnish. The texture and results weren't what I desired - some moisture can still enter the prints and some of the crispness is slightly dulled - but it is definitely more protected from open moisture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The chapter titles are typed using Doves Type Text while the main body of work are done with Alegreya. For the most part, the formatting for 9 / 10 chapters follow what you see above. The sole exception is the final chapter for Ynyr. For story reasons, I wanted to have a representation of singularity and so used a photo from Adam Block that perfectly matches the chapter. The photo also worked as a good overlay for the chapter title, conveying the awe and centrality of the singularity for the city.
As with previous bookbinds, I also added a meta notes and comments section to archive the reactions and discussions of early readers to the story.
All in all, the production of this book took a bit longer than the last, owing to the printing and glossing of the covers and endpapers, as well as editing the images to fit the pages. Although, there are still some kinks in the finished bind - the cover print does not encompass fully to reach the endpapers - I am reasonably pleased with the result.
Full thanks to Jonathan Edelstein for his permission to bind this work, and to Shaun Tan for his permission to use his drawings. As for Adam Block, uh, please forgive me.
P.S: I took the liberty to save the original forum thread for this story onto the Internet Archive. Enjoy!

How we got here from there
Or, the long journey of a longform long-running webcomic about a long man with long wings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the spirit of @feathernotes and @phantomarine who have been talking about just starting your webcomic and not worrying about being "ready", I was inspired to do a post about White Noise's origin! I'm a little limited by the fact that I either left behind or destroyed a lot of the art I have from prior to 2009, so you'll have to take my word for it.
Cringe Truth below the cut!
The Cringe Truth of White Noise is that it has its roots in a Pokemon x Yu Yu Hakusho x self-insert(s) roleplay thread I used to do with an internet friend I made on Neopets guild forums way back in 2002-ish. We would come home from school every day and RP over AIM, and then when we had to get offline, whoever left first would email the other one, and we would continue via email until we were back on AIM at the same time.
Liya was my self insert.
Tumblr media
This isn't even remotely the earliest art of her, it's just the earliest I have on hand. I was drawing her for almost a decade by the time I drew this one. Imagine the earlier drawings as being like I traced over Sailor Moon characters that I printed out from deviantART and gave them a brown ponytail.
The funny thing is Liya really hasn't changed much from her original form! I also had loose brown curls that I kept in a ponytail 24/7 to the point that it showed when I had it down (which is why her hair is 'dented' like that). I did it because I was trans and didn't know it; she does it because she hasn't realized she can just cut it off and be butch yet.
Tumblr media
Other characters that date back from this time period: Yoshi (originally an InuYasha/Rurouni Kenshin pastiche), Hawk (I don't remember when he got wings but they were white at first), Numair (named after the Tamora Pierce character and filling a Koenma kind of role), Helly (sort of--I had an elf character named Kamui who had the same temperament, and he was eventually transmuted into Helly) and...Kurogane.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've never named Kurogane but he appears in the background of the comic a few times, as my own personal inside joke.
Vlad came along somewhere between this RP period and planning the comic, but I can't remember when or why. I don't have drawings from that time (~2004?) but he was the first character I drew when I got a tablet for the first time.
Everyone else came along later when I started actually planning out the comic.
All this said: the reason I started White Noise as a weekly webcomic is because I wanted to learn to draw better.
At the time I was in college majoring in animation, but I didn't feel like I was learning very much at all (the program was badly structured; I had more art history classes than anything else. It was a mess.) I was also working nights in order to feed myself, and so had a lot of downtime. I had this story rattling around in my head from my RP days, so I figured, why not just give it a go?
For posterity here's a photo of a chapter 1 panel in progress, back in 2011 with my typical college diet in the bg:
Tumblr media
(Chapter 1 was originally pencil on paper, scanned in and colored in PS. I later re-drew it to make it fully digital to match with the rest of the comic.)
There's been a lot of talking about not waiting until you're 'ready' to start a webcomic, and I agree with that sentiment. Try framing it like this: making a comic every week for years and years will improve your art way more than any prep work you can do before starting the comic. It's like learning to swim. You can read about swimming all you want, but you're not going to really figure it out until you do it. If your early comics are bad, well, that's normal. It used to be an expected part of doing webcomics; I blame the shift into expecting webcomics to be polished from start to finish partly on commercialization in the space, but that's an angry rant for another time.
With this background, here's the collage I posted for WN's 10 year anniversary back in 2021:
Tumblr media
And now we're here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So do your webcomic. Put it on ComicFury or make a janky little site for it. Be okay with imperfect pages and be prepared to shout into the void for a while. Even if it's always a hobby, if it never makes you a dime or wins you any awards--that's fine! You'll be a lot happier if you learn not to worry about that stuff, and just make something that will help you grow and make you happy. We could do with a lot more work like that in the world imo.
