On 20th September 1842 Sir James Dewar was born.
This is a bit of a sore one for Dewar and us Scots as James is aknowdeged universally for his invention of the vacuum flask, but never thought to patent it.
James Dewar was interested in cryogenics, the science of extreme cold and in 1898 he was the first person to make liquid hydrogen, which at the time was the coldest substance ever produced.
Cooling gas to the point where it liquefies was an expensive process and Dewar needed to find a way to prevent very cold liquids evaporating while he worked with them. He built boxes insulated with cork, hay or crumpled newspapers, but none kept the liquids cold enough. Eventually he designed a double-walled glass flask and removed the air from the space between the two walls, creating a vacuum. Liquid put inside the flask stays at the same temperature because there are no air molecules through which heat can transfer.
The Dewar flask design was never patented, but two German men who discovered the commercial use for the product renamed it Thermos and claimed the rights to the commercial product and the trademark to the name so although credited with the invention Dewar made no money out of his invention by rights we should be calling the flask a Dewar rather than a Thermos the name we still use to this day. Dewar lost a court case against Thermos due to him not getting the flask patented.

[“In 1916, the City of Seattle embarked on a massive engineering project to link the city’s freshwater lakes with Puget Sound and create an industrial waterway for commercial traffic. The project lowered the water level of Lake Washington by several feet, which destroyed sluʔwiɬ, among other Indigenous sites, and further displaced the Duwamish from their homelands and waters.
The University of Washington took over the newly available slice of property and leased it to the city for use as a landfill beginning in the mid- 1920s. Nicknamed the Montlake Fill, the site frequently caught fire, spewed toxic fumes and dust, and attracted swarms of rats and flies. Around this time, two Japanese families arrived in the area and opened up produce farms just a short walking distance away from the Montlake Fill, on the precise location of what would become the University Village mall. Widespread anti-Japanese hostility, discriminatory laws, and prohibitions on property ownership had driven many Japanese from the farming business. But these families occupied what the city and real estate industry then considered worthless land, so they encountered little resistance as they built homes, raised children, and worked every day of the year to provide fresh vegetables to local markets around Seattle. Their hard-earned livelihoods quickly unraveled in the aftermath of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor and the entry of the United States into World War II. As renters, the families had little protection or recourse when President Roosevelt ordered that all persons of Japanese ancestry be removed and confined to inland concentration camps in 1942. What they couldn’t sell or store in the frantic days before their removal, the landlords confiscated for themselves.
After the war, investors began to eye this newly desirable land as an ideal location for a shopping mall. During the postwar period, the northern areas of Seattle had transformed from rural farmlands into a sprawling residential district for white families. The U Village company owners envisioned the mall as an explicitly suburban retail space and a gateway to the segregated, exclusionary neighborhoods of North Seattle. The mall’s construction went hand in hand with postwar white suburban development, raising property values and offering an insulated retail environment to match the area’s insulated racial environment. The longer history of the U Village mall thus reveals its creation not as an open, accessible retail space for down-on-their-luck Seattle families, but as an engine of segregation and white wealth accumulation built upon colonized lands and racialized displacement.”]

WHY PROFESSIONAL PEST CONTROL IS IMPORTANT?
WHY PROFESSIONAL PEST CONTROL IS IMPORTANT?
Before knowing why let me give you a brief introduction of PEST AND PEST CONTROL
WHAT IS PEST?
Any organism dangerous to people or their concerns is considered a pest. The phrase is specifically used to describe animals that harm livestock, crops, forests, or people, especially in their houses. Because they have altered the environment to suit their needs, humans are intolerant of other animals sharing space with them if their actions negatively affect our goals. Elephants are therefore OK in their native habitat but undesirable when they trample crops.
WHAT IS PEST CONTROL?
The technique of managing and stopping pests, such as insects, rodents, and other animals from harming crops, structures, and other areas is known as pest control. Numerous techniques exist for controlling pests, encompassing chemical and physical approaches such using pesticides and setting up barriers and traps.
Professional pest control is Important because You and your family should feel safe and secure in your property, but that sense is destroyed when pests break in. In addition to being an annoyance, pests pose a risk to your family's health and safety. Because infestations can spread illnesses and cause damage to property, it's best to leave professional pest treatment to the professionals when it comes to your property. Professional pest control services are vital for a number of reasons, including the maintenance of a secure, comfortable, and healthy home or workplace. Here is the list of WHY PROFESSIONAL PEST CONTROL IS IMPORTANT?
Safety and Health:
For both people and pets, pests can be extremely dangerous to their health. There are several pests that can spread bacteria, viruses, and parasites to people. To give just two examples, ticks and mosquitoes can spread Lyme disease and the West Nile virus, respectively, while rodents can carry infections like the Hantavirus.
Eco-Friendly Resolutions:
A lot of pest control businesses provide low-toxicity and environmentally friendly pest control solutions. In order to safeguard the ecosystem and reduce harm to non-target species, they place a higher priority on the use of safer techniques and chemicals.
Peace of Mind:
It gives you peace of mind to know that skilled pest control services are protecting your property. You don't have to worry about the presence of pests or the possible health hazards they may cause to carry out your everyday activities.
Allergies and Respiratory Problems:
Pest infestations can trigger allergies and respiratory problems, particularly in individuals who are sensitive to allergens like cockroach droppings, dust mites, and pet dander. Professional Pest Control Services helps reduce allergen exposure.
Safeguarding Property:
Professional pest control safeguard your property. In addition to eating through wires, insulation, wood, and fabrics, pests can seriously harm property. For example, unmanaged termites can seriously harm building integrity. Professional pest management shields against such harm.
Food Security:
Food sources in residences and commercial buildings can become contaminated by pests. Foodborne infections may result from this contamination. By preventing infestations in kitchens, pantries, and storage spaces, professional pest control
Dubai may help protect food safety.
Keeping Out Secondary Pests:
Using do-it-yourself pest control techniques could unintentionally result in further infestations of pests. For example, getting rid of one kind of bug with insecticides could lead to another pest issue. By locating and addressing the underlying cause of infestations, professionals can lower the likelihood of developing secondary pests.
Knowledge and Experience:
Professionals in pest control have the skills, background, and education necessary to recognise various pest species, comprehend their habits, and implement efficient removal methods. They are able to customise solutions for specific pest issues.
Time and Money Saved:
Do-it-yourself pest control techniques can be labor-intensive and may not work well. Proffesional pest control experts can handle insect issues more quickly, which could ultimately save you time and money.
Observance of Regulations:
Businesses must follow rules for pest control, particularly those in the food and hospitality sectors. Professional pest management services support adherence to these rules.
Prolonged Prevention:
Professional pest control services prioritise long-term prevention in addition to quick elimination. By recognising and addressing pest-attracting environments, they lessen the chance of additional infestations.
Tailored Solutions:
Pest control professionals customise their approaches to address the particular problems with pests and the particular requirements of every property, offering efficient and customised solutions.
To sum up, Professional pest control services are necessary to keep a space safe, healthy, and free of pests. In order to shield residential and commercial premises from the damaging consequences of pest infestations, they provide knowledge, experience, and a variety of practical solutions.

Tankiste Cold Weather Gear
This is an impression of a French tank crewman in winter gear. One may see this uniform on tankiste during the cold winter months. While the standard infantry soldier may wear the iconic sheepskin jerkin, the tankiste instead had to rely on their black leather coat during the winter season. This tankiste wears the Toile de Tente Modèle 1897 modifié 1914 as extra waterproofing. This variant of the tent had loops that would allow for two lengths of hemp cordage to be passed through the waist and neck area to allow the tent to be worn as a poncho. Waterproofing the tent was done using paraffin and alcohol thinner.
Knitted items would be issued throughout the entire war, created by French citizens at the homefront and quality checked by the French Red Cross. They would be passed onto the army Quarter-Master where they would be received in as standard issue winter gear. The Red Cross had pamphlets distributed to the civilian population which featured several patterns of knitted gear from blankets, shirts, and scarves, to fingerless mittens and comfort items like tobacco pouches. The knitted garments pictured here are 1917 Red Cross pattern examples. The first display photo shows a standard grey and blue knitted cap, worn at the rear lines or when resting. The knitted cap beside this is intended to be worn under the helmet at the frontline. Below these is a knitted helmet or balaclava. These would be worn below the nose or at the chin, and had tails or capes at the front and back that would fit under the uniform to secure the balaclava in place and provide extra insulation. Below this is a pair of knitted wristlets, to be worn under the tunic providing some hand and arm insulation.
To the right is the standard French Army folding lantern. Specifically, it is the Lanterne de Campement Monjardet Modèle 1910 with its Ersatz Lamp Cover. Many models exist of this pattern and design slightly varies between manufacturers. All examples would be accepted into the army as a regulation item. These would be issued to Corporals to provide necessary lighting at night. Tankiste would also be provided with an electric lamp for their tanks, and the tankiste could also purchase an electric flashlight to give light inside the tank when performing maintenance duties. The candlelit Monjardet lamp folds into a triangular lamp with a hanging handle at the top and a holding handle on the back. The candle is pinned to the bottom panel by a spike and the rear panel is reflective which directs more light outward towards the front. Transparent mica is used as the clear shielding and can be slid out and replaced when it eventually gets damaged from the heat. Holes in the side panels allow for air to pass through and a small vent is placed at the top panel to disperse smoke. Overall, these lanterns were well liked with the troops as its design provided decent light coverage at night while being very compact when stowed.
Below this is a smoking pipe, lighter, and tobacco case. Nothing much to be said here - many smoked as a pastime during this period. The lighter is a commercial 'trench art' lighter, not created by the soldiers themselves but made to look like the examples that were created in the trenches. This style of 'trench art' item was popular among the civilian population and soldiers alike. It resembles an artillery shell with the cap closed, and removing the cap shows the petrol lighter ignition piece. The brass ignition piece can be removed which reveals cotton balls that absorb the liquid fuel. Beside this is a French 32 card manille deck. Manille was a very popular card game among the French at the time period. A tax stamp is placed on the Ace of Clubs which was a common sight on French playing cards. To the right of this is a board game called Solitaire. It consists of a wooden board with 36 removable pegs where the objective of the game is to clear the board of all but one of the pieces by jumping, horizontally or vertically, over an adjacent piece and removing it from the board. These types of time wasting and socializing games were available to soldiers in military bazaars. A light blue wool pocket was provided for this Solitaire example.

The Swedish pulp producer Renewcell has just opened the world's first commercial-scale, textile-to-textile chemical recycling pulp mill, after spending 10 years developing the technology.
While mechanical textiles-to-textiles recycling, which involves the manual shredding of clothes and pulling them apart into their fibres, has existed for centuries, Renewcell is the first commercial mill to use chemical recycling, allowing it to increase quality and scale production. With ambitions to recycle the equivalent of more than 1.4 billion T-shirts every year by 2030, the new plant marks the beginning of a significant shift in the fashion industry's ability to recycle used clothing at scale.
"The linear model of fashion consumption is not sustainable," says Renewcell chief executive Patrik Lundström. "We can't deplete Earth's natural resources by pumping oil to make polyester, cut down trees to make viscose or grow cotton, and then use these fibres just once in a linear value chain ending in oceans, landfills or incinerators. We need to make fashion circular." This means limiting fashion waste and pollution while also keeping garments in use and reuse for as long as possible by developing collection schemes or technologies to turn textiles into new raw materials.
Each year, more than 100 billion items of clothing are produced globally, according to some estimates, with 65% of these ending up in landfill within 12 months. Landfill sites release equal parts carbon dioxide and methane – the latter greenhouse gas being 28 times more potent than the former over a 100-year period. The fashion industry is estimated to be responsible for 8-10% of global carbon emissions, according to the UN.
Just 1% of recycled clothes are turned back into new garments. While charity shops, textiles banks and retailer "take-back" schemes help to keep those donated clothes in wearable condition in circulation, the capabilities of recycling clothes at end-of-life are currently limited. Many high street stores with take-back schemes, including Levi Strauss and H&M, operate a three-pronged system: resell (for example, to charity shops), re-use (convert into other products, such as cleaning cloths or mops) or recycle (into carpet underlay, insulation material or mattress filling – clothing is not listed as an option).
Much of the technical difficulty in recycling worn-out clothes back into new clothing comes down to their composition. The majority of clothes in our wardrobes are made from a blend of textiles, with polyester the most widely produced fibre, accounting for a 54% share of total global fibre production, according to the global non-profit Textile Exchange. Cotton is second, with a market share of approximately 22%. The reason for polyester's prevalence is the low cost of fossil-based synthetic fibres, making them a popular choice for fast fashion brands, which prioritise price above all else – polyester costs half as much per kg as cotton. While the plastics industry has been able to break down pure polyester (PET) for decades, the blended nature of textiles has made it challenging to recycle one fibre, without degrading the other. (Read more about why clothes are so hard to recycle.)
By using 100% textile waste – mainly old T-shirts and jeans – as its feedstock, the Renewcell mill makes a biodegradable cellulose pulp they call Circulose. The textiles are first shredded and have buttons, zips and colouring removed. They then undergo both mechanical and chemical processing that helps to gently separate the tightly tangled cotton fibres from each other. What remains is pure cellulose.
