Roxy loves Stephen Sprouse! Or at least, someone from the Jem design team decided to dress her in his styles. I wonder if it's because Roxy bears a passing resemblance to Blondie's Debbie Harry, a close friend and muse of the designer (they were even roommates at one point).

Not only did the Jem team base Roxy's arrow vest outfit on a Dep gel ad featuring a Sprouse vest, but Roxy's original fashion—with the pink and green lettered pants—also mirrors graffiti-inspired looks from his AW 1984 collection (below, right) for which he drew black letters over vibrant silks and adorned them with sequins, masterfully combining elements of glamour and punk (a style that I think also describes The Misfits pretty well).

A few years ago, a Jem fan (Krista) on Facebook shared a screenshot from this David Lee Roth music video "Just a Gigolo," and another fan (Heather) identified the pants as Sprouse pants, saying she always wanted a pair! Here's a gif I made of the scene in the video where the pants make an appearance:

Here's the Roxy doll that Integrity Toys produced in 2013. I see it as an homage to the sequins that Sprouse used frequently in his designs:

A Jem fan friend of mine wanted a cartoon-based faux leather version of Roxy's original pants for their Integrity Toys doll, so in 2014 I made a patent pleather version with the scattered letters design:

Here's a scan from inside the same comic. A character named Dexter creates colourful graffiti-sprawled outfits for Betty and Veronica for their upcoming Archies tour.

To anyone who finds this post, I need you all to send me the biggest haters in fiction you can think of.

Their hater energy can either be justified (regardless of if their reasoning is good or not) or just a bastard for the sake of it. Doesn't matter. If they wake up extra early just so they have more time to be a hater, that qualifies. May contain a few braindead takes from myself since I'm using the broadest definition possible --but the most frequent examples I see listed may be featured in what I like to call "Battle Of The Haters"...a poll featuring some of fiction's greatest bastards.

Some examples I know of for sure:

Though i have added some original ideas to Superwoman, she is based off of Superman. The stories are based off of various Superman stories over the years. I do not own superman, or any of the related characters. The Superman series was created by Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster and is owned by DC Comics. This story is a work of fan-fiction and is for entertainment only. I am not making profit from this story. All rights of Superman belong to DC Comics.

Cinema Subterrain was a free monthly microcinema held in the basement of L.A. Mood Comics and Games’ Richmond Street location, which ran from 2004-2006.

17 years later, we’ve brought it back!

Cinema Subterrain Presents: Whose Songs are Better? Jem and the Holograms vs. Barbie and the Rockers! Animated double feature! 

Jem and the Holograms (1986)

Barbie and the Rockers: Out of This World (1986)

And Barbie and the Sensations: Rockin’ Back to Earth (1987)

In 1986, as Hasbro Toys was about to release a new doll line; Jem and the Holograms - a group of glamorous rock star dolls, that was meant to compete with Barbie. As if like magic, Mattel released a new offset line of Barbie Dolls called Barbie and the Rockers prior to the release of Jem and the Holograms. 

It’s all very suspicious, and there have been stories about how Mattel got wind of Hasbro’s plans, and rushed to beat them to market. 

Whatever the case, both doll lines spawned their own animated adventures!! Jem and the Holograms ran for 3 seasons (1986-1988) for a total of 65 episodes. Jem follows the adventures of Jerrica Jones, who lives a double life as burgeoning pop Star Jem. The story follows her quest for love and fame, as she and her friends (The Holograms) battle their rivals The Misfits, a group of transgressive punk rockers!

On the Barbie and the Rockers side, two shorts were produced, released directly to VHS: Barbie and the Rockers, Out of this World (1986) and Barbie and the Sensations, Rocking Back to Earth (1987). 

Tonight, we’ll begin with the first story arc of Jem and the Holograms, which is the first three episodes, released on VHS, followed by both the Barbie and the Rockers episodes!

currently watching: Nothing major at the moment, I just finished Abbott Elementary and I’m still contemplating it…I miss it. BUT there is Jem, Im binging through a handful of episodes this summer 😌

currently reading: The Jem comic run from 2015. I too am binge reading through everything. Currently on the Misfits spin-off. + The girl from the other side volume 9. On the highly climatic part. I’ve been following this story for a long time. They don’t have the rest online so this is the only way to finish it….Yk I got a lot on my summer reading list.

current obsession: if you can’t tell Jem and adjacently 80s fashion and culture. These LSD Barbies are brain rotting me fr. But also the 80s are funky in many ways + The Electric Mayhem from the muppets. I love those funny little guys ever since the new show dropped. If I’m not careful I might get down into a muppets/Jim Henson rabbit hole. Shout out to colorful fictional bands.
