March 23rd - Comic Book Documentaries!!!
Tumblr media
Cinema Subterrain Returns for its Spring 2024 screening programme! There will be screenings in March, April and May (more info tba!)
Cinema Subterrain Presents: An Evening of Comic Book Documentaries.
La Mood Comics and Games has graciously hosted Cinema Subterrain since its inception in 2004. To celebrate the medium that built their business, tonight we will be featuring two documentaries on the medium on Comic Books!!!
Comic Book Confidential (1988, dir: Ron Mann).
Ron Mann's Documentary traces the origins of the medium of comics from its inception, through it's moral panics and growing pains; tracing it's growth to being regarded as a legitimate artistic medium. Featuring interviews with comic creators, the film focuses heavily on the emergence of the underground comix scene and the maturing of the medium into a discreet artform. Featuring interviews with Stan Lee, Robert Crumb, Linda Barry, Frank Miller, William Gaines, and more. This is one of the best and definitive documentaries on comics!
She Makes Comics (2014, dir: Marissa Stotter)
This documentary focuses on the crucial role that women have played in the comic book industry since the early 1900s. Much like Mann's film, the film traces the origins of the medium, but with an emphasis on the contributions made by women within comics, from the nacent industry of the 1930s, through the underground comix scene of the 1970s, to the present day.

Top 10 Genre Films to Be Excited for in 2024
It's #2024 and I got my list of what #genre #popculture #movies to must see, and you'll be surprised as what I got listed as my #1! read on at:
Out of all the approximately 20 genre films that’s coming in 2024, to say which ten are on my hit list boils down to a few key elements. Just how iconic will that character or concept become, and is it a sequel? These days, the latter helps fill any checklist fast, but to be fair, I’ve also included alternate works that fit the bill of being must-sees. Presented in descending order from least to…

Very good, free documentary about women who draw and write comics and graphic novels. I wish I'd known about this stuff sooner - I got into comics in my late teens and gave up on the format because everything I saw was misogynist as shit. Maybe I oughta give it another look.

Today in: I live under a rock.
Finally watched the David Ayers Suicide Squad movie, followed immediately by Birds Of Prey. What follows are my reviews of these two films.
Suicide Squad is interesting because I have never seen this particular combination of "aggressively re-edited film to recover a failed production" energy and "the studio just poured money at this with a fleet of cement mixers for some strange and possibly fraudulent reason" at the same time. I am baffled that it exists, I am baffled by nearly every individual choice made for its production. I had a pretty good time watching it but can't entirely give the movie credit for me laughing at it.
Birds of Prey and The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn is the cinematic equivalent of being hit by a speeding train constructed entirely of sour candy and whose boiler burns garden gnomes to make steam from grape soda. It's entire exterior is covered in lit sparklers. On impact you detonate into a cloud of star-shaped confetti. The conductor is a unicorn. I want everyone in the world to experience this, all at the same time and without any warning, I think it would be funny.

Listen to me. If you want your media literacy to improve, you have to consume a variety of media. And I don't just mean a variety of genres or a variety of writers or a variety of target demographics (though absolutely those as well), I mean a variety of mediums. Read books. Watch TV. Watch films. Listen to radio plays. Watch theatre productions. Watch documentaries. Read comics and graphic novels. Goddammit read fanfic and watch youtube videos as well, just for the love of god have variety. Learn to recognise how different mediums convey themes and information in different ways. It's like food groups, you need a little bit of all of them to be healthy.
