I am DMing for a group of teens and young adults who are learning to play DnD. Last night we were doing character creation for a brand new player joining us who has chosen to play a Ranger. We were going over weapons and their uses and rules when we got to the short bow.
Me> I have my own rules on the short bow.
P1> (who also plays a Ranger) Oh, yeah. She plays by the rule of cool, and this one is really cool.
Me> I allow you to use your short bow in melee combat. Because I have personally shot someone at 5 feet, and so I let you do the same.
Newbie> You what?
Me> If I can do it irl you can do it in game.
Newbie> An actual PERSON?
Me> Yeah.
I didn't elaborate, which was just more hilarious because neither did the other players. They just let him sit and IMAGINE.

"The problem with trying to be historically accurate, is that history doesn't care"
So much of the time we think of historical cultures as being very uniform, but people have always been weird, and our expectations of past behaviour don't always match the reality!

it’s interesting to me how close songs like “Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve” or “The Manuscript” get to a robust ethics of love versus use. beyond simply the assertion that leaving is a betrayal of love which ought to be forever, these songs contain a pretty strong rejection, specifically of sex where it did not belong and had no business appearing. she can say, not just you leaving was cowardly, you ruined something real, but I regret you all the time—I wouldn’t do it all over again, any of it. not just you hurt me within the bounds of our love story, but this wasn’t above board at all. it wasn’t love. you took advantage. another way to say this: “Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve” and “The Manuscript” recognize that sometimes sex is a sin. not leaving afterwards, but sex itself. for the first time, we’re presented with a love story that couldn’t have been saved by an eleventh hour confession of love, by “don’t go” or “I want you for worse or for better” or “the worst thing that I ever did was what I did to you”. the whole thing is rejected as poisoned.
but these songs can only make such a strong statement because there’s the age gap to point to. to the modern mind, it’s easier to recognize use when there’s a clear power imbalance, but I think we’re getting the causation wrong, or at least oversimplifying it. the reason there shouldn’t be sexual relationships between people of drastically different ages isn’t that older people and younger people exist as such in relationships of imbalanced power. a healthy relationship between a mentor and a mentee or a teacher and a student is about guidance and education and protection and respect. these things aren’t “good” exercises of power or restrained power, they are not exercises of power at all.
power enters into the equation when one party decides to use the other. this choice transforms every difference in the relationship into an inequality, every imbalance into a threat. this wasn’t always secretly there under the relationship, it’s a totally transformed new kind of relationship now that use has entered into it. the more differences and asymmetries there are to start with, the more dramatically unequal the new relationship is—not because the relationship was bad inevitably and to begin with! but because these relationships are more vulnerable and so bringing use into them is a greater corruption, which magnifies the damage that is always there. even a perfectly “equal” relationship becomes a power struggle when use enters into it.
but the further step which is invisible to modern eyes is that sex, outside of marriage, does this all on its own. somebody who sleeps with you without marrying you is using you, full stop. and as much as I think this revelation is between the lines of Tortured Poets (and I do think that, it’s in the parallels between the two men!), she can’t face it head-on. there is no she thought about how he said since they loved each other, everything had been above board…she wasn’t sure. because modernity is so convinced that that has to be above board. so the closest thing we get to a song that speaks to that creeping feeling that she was used again is the mashup of Sweet Nothing and Hoax, and her derisive conclusion: all that you ever wanted from me was sweet nothing.

fma 2003: the other side of the gate is the real world and all this time alchemists have been harvesting energy from human lives in this world in order to fuel their alchemy, and also war is at risk of wiping out humanity and we have to stop it and we’re going to germany for the aforementioned reasons, and there’s probably a parallel version of everyone you know in this universe so you’ll just have to get used to that, and
also fma 2003: we made this guy into a cyborg. he’s gonna have two scenes and then he’s gonna get shot to death. hashtag scifi.

It's gonna be awesome, and there will be some PHENOMENAL references coming out of this.
If you'd like to pre-order Photo packs, you have until the 25th October. Get them here:
In the meantime, as a taster, here are some of the photos from last time I collaborated with @null-entity (who's also part of this project!) Enjoy!

UMMM are the events in ivy abt to unfold? I feel like some shit’s abt to go down
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Clover blooms”->St Patrick’s Day->Same day Eras Tour started
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Spring break(s) loose”->spring break is mid March for most schools->first day of spring was March 20
“Crescent moon coast is clear” // “Wait for the signal and I’ll meet you after dark”
“He’s gonna burn this house to the ground”->her burning the lover house down after singing “you’ll see me in hindsight tangled up w you all night burning it down”->the midnights cover being her w a lighter->her lighting a match in the lavender haze mv->”burn all the files desert all your past lives”->”we’re burned for better”
“The time is near…moments that we stole on begged and borrowed time”->“It’s a clock it can help you tell time”->exile expires->”meet me at midnight”->bejeweled mv->Cinderella’s dress and carriage expiring at midnight->”shred my evening gown”->”dappled w the flickers of light from the dress I wore at midnight leave it all behind”
It feels like a ticking time bomb abt to explode. I feel like a lot of songs on folklore, evermore, and midnights, like ivy, willow, the great war, and long story short were actually written abt future events that hadn’t happened yet. “Actually I always felt I must look better in the rear view” not only being abt her masters but also abt how a lot of these songs were only meant to make complete sense in retrospect 👀 kinda like bejeweled and lavender haze

im here to do fantasy au rambling don't mind me
Globe is a mage, cause why not? We get to see her cast spells, and learn new ones along the journey — her charm is probably going to be the first one to break if she's not careful.
She's not an experienced mage, but she's alright. Some of her spells go wrong, and during battles, she can cause harm to herself instead of the opponent.
Her powers are usually for healing, so she doesn't know many combat spells — that's what she's trying to learn, along with surviving along the road.
Grenade is a bandit, but a very clumsy one — sure, they're great at what they do, but they leave traces behind when they steal from a village.
They're part of a large group of people, who are also bandits/thief's, who all steal from the unknowing villagers and their market stalls, livingv in a pretty wealthy place.
Grenade is usually hanging around the outskirts of town, near the bridge. They have a charm, simply because it was stolen from the previous owner.
Their skills are more.. physical. The combat side of things, if you will. They're a great fighter, but need to be careful when it comes to knowing when to fight.
Pot is an elf — they carry a satchel filled with things that they've collected on the journey, along with a dagger for protection. The dagger has their charm on it, the shape of a leaf.
She also carry potions in their satchel, and when attacked, they use these to their advantage. Some have poisonous gas, while others do not.
Pot owns a market stand in the village he's from, and is pretty well liked from what we know, earning a good few gold coins in the process!
Debit Card & Wicker Basket are fairies — both carrying wands of their own. They fly around the forest, making sure it's nice and safe.
Wicker Baskets spells are on the nature side, used to grow plants, while also good for combat. She can use vines to wrap up her opponents.
Debit Card, on the other hand, uses his spells for things like commanding animals to attack the opponent at hand.
Combined, their charms are a flower and a bird.
Scroll is an Archer. He's not got much on his plate, but he has a good heart. He often helps around the local bakery, making sure the village is alright.
His skills are pretty good — while he can't work with a sword, he knows his way around a good bow and arrow, and can hit anyone with.. a good amount of perfection.
On the waters, we're greeted to a siren — a siren known as Purse, of course! She lures people into the water, before taking them as her own and sending them to die.
Her motives are clear, and most avoid sailing because of her reign over the other ocean dwellers.
Ripping out her heart is the only way to get rid of her — once it's done, the ocean is free from the chains she's left them in.
thats all.. for now..
