Me> It's a shame you weren't born in the middle ages. People would have avoided you because of your [dichromatic] hair. You could be living alone in a bog with your chickens and cow.
Sissy> Now I'd just settle for having two eyebrows.
Me> They used to pluck them into non-existence for a time in the middle ages.
Sissy> So I could have no eyebrows?
Me> But you'd have your bog chickens?
#dichromatic hair#heterochromia hair#middle ages#beauty standard#bog life#my sister is a mutant#we would tell her 'shut up mutant go climb a wall' when we were kids#I called her one time and asked what she was doing. She told me dyeing her eyebrows because 'sometimes I feel like having two of them.'

I’ve been to egills woodstuffs! It went something like this
Me: is egill here?
Egill: that’s me
Me: lovely! Your sister, Marie told me to say hello!
Egill: ah, that’s why she asked if I’d be here, do me a favor and mess up her hair when you see her
(Insert odd interaction where I tell him I don’t actually know you in person that ends with him telling me to tell you that he told me to mess up his hair)
YOU ARE A LEGEND! ⭐ Thank you!!
I want it to get weird with several people telling him I said hi then saying they don't actually know me (in person). 😂

Might you know where I could Egills woodstuff in the merchants so I could say hello for you?
You are lovely! I can't wait to see if he says anything to me. :) According to the merchants guide he is in space #140.
While you're in merchants, if you're of a mind, you should stop by Auntie Arwen's Spices & Teas (they're in #62 near the west gate). I don't know them personally, I just really like their products. Ultimate Garlic Insanity is a staple in my house.

What's the first object that comes to mind when you think of the SCA?
I'll go first.
An old thrown mug with a brown speckled finish and a cobalt blue drip on the lip made by Baumeister in June of 1983.

It was my Mom's mug from when she started playing. I believe she acquired it in a trade. It has survived forty-two years of events and the five of us kids growing up, and it doesn't have a chip in it. It's one of my prized SCA possessions. When I look at it, I remember being this free little kid and playing on the banks of a dam at an event and trying to keep up with the dancers at a demo in the mall. I remember A&S nights where we would color on scraps of parchment or make nests of the fabric lying around. It is the symbol of the SCA for me.
What's yours?

I did a mini demo for a time travelers summer camp at the Children's Museum today, and they were ADORABLE. I taught them to play Hare and Hounds, and by the third round of it the kids were so good that they went for a solid minute before someone got out. They would have been happy just playing that for the hour. The camp director was delighted at how focused and engaged they were with three beanbags.
Then I taught them the Maltese Bransle (or as I explain it to the littles, the medieval hokey-pokey) and they were just as hooked. They requested it three times. Lord, I was sweaty by the end of it.
The museum has now asked to partner with the SCA on future activities for families so not only did I have a blast teaching the littles, but now we get to do more demonstrations for the public! Remember kids: the SCA stays an educational non-profit through public demonstrations, so they're important!

Good afternoon!! I just got home from pennsic. I'm very sad to have to leave the group (whomst I've been affectionately calling the grandparent gang) but I did manage to get everyone's numbers before I left, and they made sure to stress to me that I've been adopted and let me tell you I Absolutely Did Not cry at all when I left. Not even Once. I do now have an invite to camp with them next year and to visit them when they go to a concert sometime so yay!! Before I left I volunteered for watch, and it ended up being that I had to do it by myself, AND it was my first time driving a golf cart. So that was an exciting experience lmao
THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY. CHOSEN FAMILY IS THE BEST. But low-key, did you have fun on the golf cart? Cause honestly, they only had themselves to blame.

Howdy from the Midrealm!
This is my first Pennsic, and I'm trying to meet people. Are there any particular spots/ folks that you would recommend a young tumblrite Scadian visit? Thank you very much!
-Constantine of the Middle Marches
Hello friend! I'm always excited to meet anyone from Middle Marches, because that's where I have family (both blood and chosen). It's where my parents SCA journey began, actually.
As for anything in particular for you to visit or try, well... all the things. There will be opportunities at Pennsic that you might not have at local events, so I encourage you to look at the schedule and pick the things that interest you the most.
My personal recommendations include archery or thrown weapons for those who are new. They're great gateway activities. Go to a ball. At least once. If you're camping with a group, ask someone to introduce you to people. Go to parties. Visit the merchants. The SCA as a Tumblrina is really no different, except that most people aren't wearing shoe laces.
I will specifically ask that you find Egill from Egill's Woodstuff in the merchants and tell him that his sister, Marie, says hi. I'm trying to get as many people as possible to do it just for my own amusement.
As for further recommendations - I hand you over to the experienced and gentle hands of other Scadians who will, undoubtedly, have other amazing suggestions for you to experience at Pennsic. I just ask that you stay safe, drink lots of water, wear a hat and comfortable shoes, and HAVE FUN!!

THE. TWIRL.
I got all three front panels embroidered in time for comicon! Yes, the goal was to have this done enough for pennsic, but secondary goal was to have it done enough for comiccon and the comiccombat demo, which I managed to do!

Also because someone wanted me to post a video of me twirling, here it is!
(Ignore the fact that I just wore my normal clothes underneath and not the light green kirtle I actually have to go with it)

Hello from pennsic!! I've been here since this Sunday (my birthday!!) and already I've gotten adopted by a group haha. They're a bunch of older folks who invited me for breakfast and dinner today and have been regaling me with all sorts of stories. Its been loads of fun. I have to go home on Wednesday though and I'll be sad to leave them :( but they did invite me over to stay in their camp next year!! Thanks for listening to me yap haha I'm just very excited
I LOVE THIS FOR YOU!! This is one of the things that I really, truly love about the SCA: the generous hospitality of friends you don't know yet. It's like southern hospitality on medieval crack.
I'm so glad that you found such a lovely group and that you're having a good time! I hope that you're able to see and do as much as you can before you leave. And please yap away, I love to hear that others are having a good time. It makes me happy to know that they are happy.
If you stop by the merchants, and happen to see Egill of Egill's Woodstuffs - tell him his sister Marie says hi. My goal is to have as many people as I can do that just so he asks why so many people are telling him I said hi.
Enjoy yourself, drink lots of water, wear a hat and comfortable shoes, and HAVE FUN STORMING THE CASTLE!!

I think the streak has stopped. I didn't have one show up anywhere yesterday. Do I find it highly suspicious that it stopped after I publicly called them out for it? Yes. Yes, I do.

Okay, but you asked.
I took my niece and nephew on a long promised weekend trip to DC and let them each plan a day doing and or seeing anything they each wanted. Thursday we drove up, got settled into our hotel, and went to bed.
1:24 am on Friday morning, the fire alarm goes off and we evacuate to the front of the hotel. "Did you do this just to see firemen?" My niece asks, and we all laugh. It was a faulty alarm and we're allowed back in about twenty minutes later. I snap a picture.

The rest of Friday goes by firetruck free, but the kids keep teasing me. Saturday rolls around and nary a fire engine in sight. My nephew asks if they blocked my number. We laugh and exit the metro station that evening to walk to the car and there's a fire truck in the parking lot. We laugh at the coincidence. I snap a picture.

Sunday we drive to Baltimore to visit the aquarium and see some family. My niece and nephew tell our cousins about the firetrucks that show up where ever I am and we all laugh. As we leave the aquarium the distinct sound of fire sirens can be heard and a truck drives right by us. We all crack up until it stops in front of our parking garage. My niece thinks this is hysterical. I snap a picture.

We return to our hotel, and I stopped to fill up my gas that evening since we would be leaving first thing in the morning. As I start the car to leave we see another engine. "Marie!" My niece says, but no one laughs this time.
Monday we pack up and I drive the kids home. I visit with my family a little before I drive the additional two hours home, where I get a text from my sister. She had stopped to get dinner and a firetruck pulled into the shopping center. She sent me a picture.

I ask her which kid is with her, and feel vindicated that it was my nephew. I joke and tell her that it was actually HIM they were following. We all laugh. I go to bed.
Tuesday morning, yesterday, I get up and get the dogs ready for their morning walk. I open the door only to hear heavy engines idling. I walk to the edge of the balcony and see a fire engine in front of my building. My elderly downstairs neighbor had fallen and needed help getting up. After confirming that she's okay, I take a picture because no one is going to believe me.

Today passed by uneventfully, and I was certain that it was over. It was all a strange coincidence. They weren't actually stalking me, I was just beating the strangest odds ever created. Which was why this evening, when I opened my door to accept a delivery, there was another fire truck.

My neighbor fell again. I asked her if she is part of the conspiracy to have them show up where ever I am. She asked me if I'd seen the firemen, and could I blame her for falling so many times. I asked her to please stop for her health and my sanity.
I have no idea what I'm going to do if another one shows up tomorrow. This is three different states and six consecutive days, y'all.
I am being stalked by the fire department.
