Cat Power at Columbus Athenaeum, Columbus, Ohio, Sept. 18, 2024
Cat Power took the Columbus Athenaeum stage and a faux Bob Dylan concert broke out.
The singer and her six-piece, small-“b” band were in Ohio’s capital city Sept. 18 on the long-running Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert tour, which grew out of the 2023 Power album that recreated the long-bootlegged Dylan gig erroneously believed to have occurred at the titular venue but was actually held at the Manchester Free Trade Hall.
Without introduction, Power walked on to the Athenaeum’s darkened stage at a fashionably late 8:20 p.m. and, accompanied by acoustic guitar and occasional harmonica, leaned into Dylan’s folksinger side with “She Belongs to Me.”
Employing simpler-than-Dylan’s arrangements and her own vocal phrasing, Power’s deep, smoky voice matched the dim, smoky ambience that obscured the singer in near darkness, save for a small lamp illuminating the lyrics Power continues to read nearly a year into the tour.
A forgotten turning of the page during “Desolation Row” confirmed the songbook’s necessity as the small audience listened respectfully - and noticed it was he who makes love “Just Like a Woman” and breaks like a little girl - and applauded each number lustily.
While Sound Bites’ mind occasionally wandered during the 55-minute, Cowboy Junkies-quiet opening segment, the blog was instantly riveted - and reaching for earplugs - as the rest of the musicians emerged and launched into “Tell Me, Momma,” their cacophonous, big-“B” Band sound - piano and organ; two electric guitars; bass and drums - blasting through the dim haze on stage.
The slow-rolling rendition of “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” was a highlight as the dueling keyboardists wound around and tangled with each other and Power’s soulful vocals matched the soul emanating from the rhythm section.
The purposeful sloppiness of “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat” inspired Power to mimic playing the solo on top of the upright piano at stage left; the brooding “Ballad of a Thin Man” mirrored the singer’s onstage demeanor; and the double-time arrangement of “Like a Rolling Stone” found her for the first time removing her mic from its stand and moving around as she sang.
“Fight the power,” she said when it ended. “Keep your chin up. Take your time. It’s your time.”
And then she disappeared.
Setlist: “She Belongs to Me;” “Fourth Time Around;” “Visions of Johanna;” “It’s All over Now, Baby Blue;” “Desolation Row;” “Just Like a Woman;” “Mr. Tambourine Man;” “Tell Me, Momma;” “I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Met);” “Baby, Let Me Follow You Down;” “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues;” “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat;” “One Too Many Mornings;” “Ballad of a Thin Man;” “Like a Rolling Stone”

Conceived as an athenaeum for business scholars, the three-story, 68,000-square-foot structure takes inspiration from its Tampa Bay setting and the indigenous coral stone that lines its shore. Like the stone, the building is a porous container with openings carved out of its volume that house program and allow sunlight and landscaping to penetrate deep within.
One of these openings is the light-filled central commons and scholars’ garden that support casual learning and encourage productive collisions between students and faculty. The multi-story commons and scholar garden are spatially intermeshed and ringed with active programs spaces including a trading room, community room, break rooms and classrooms that connect the learner to their environment.
The most unique feature of the building is its glass façade that metaphorically recalls the openings in regional organic coquina or coral stone. To achieve the impression and depth of surface one would find in coquina, the design team created an inventive composition of flat glazing units.
These elements appear three dimensional, consisting of a ceramic fritted first pane that is double run with two tones of a circular pattern and a second, reflective one-way mirror glass pane that allows views out while reflecting the patterned ceramic coating of the first pane, resulting in a glass surface with a three-dimensional quality or a shadowed depth that belies its constructive flatness.
In addition, the glazing system is designed to resisted hurricane force winds and projectiles and reject the intensive Floridian heat gain. The building is LEED Gold certified.

Rodrigo y Gabriela at Columbus Athenaeum, Columbus, Ohio, May 15, 2024
Rodrigo y Gabriela take their music to the people.
Literally.
The guitar duo performed two acoustic numbers - “Diablo Rojo”and “Tamacun” - amid ecstatic audience members May 15 at Columbus Athenaeum. Making their first appearance in the city, the pair played with abandon; urged their fans to clap out the respective beats; and fist bumped and hugged their followers before returning to the stage after their mid- and late-show forays into the seating area.
The latter led to Gabriela’s solo spot, during which she commanded the sparse, fog-shrouded, LED-lighted stage as she hunched over her acoustic guitar, playing pedal effects and percussion on the instrument’s body. As Gabriela bowed deeply - her hands reaching the stage - and blew kisses to the audience, Rodrigo re-emerged with an electric guitar slung over his back to finger a stand-suspended acoustic on the tender “Finding Myself Leads Me to You.”
Like all the RyG songbook, these are instrumental compositions. Unlike much the material performed in the 17-song, 100-minute gig - about half drawn from 2023’s In Between Thoughts…A New World - they’re unplugged. More-recent offerings found Rodrigo playing electric, steel and talk-box guitars to Gabriela’s acoustic with ambient textures and beats piped in. While this music is inferior to the acoustic sounds with which RyG began, it translates well to the stage and allows concertgoers to witness another side of their overflowing talent.
The duo pogoed, circled the stage - each other, too - and faced off; he striking wide-legged metal poses; she banging her head and guitar. They occasionally separated and moved to the front of the stage to work pedals - one for each player - and make eye contact with fans.
From hard rock to flamenco to classical, RyG spanned the world of music and spoke volumes while saying virtually nothing. Which is what the universal language of live performance does and allowed the mostly English-speaking audience to be swept up in the Spanish-language music of Okan, the duo that opened the show with a triumphantly received, 30-minute set of Afro-Cuban jazz mashed up with house beats.

Boston, MA -- Palehound will be releasing their new album Black Friday on June 7 via Polyvinyl Records. The newest single from the album is “Worthy,” an introspective song on self-love. When I first listened to the song, I was immediately drawn to Palehound’s distinct lo-fi style of alt/indie rock. From the mellow guitars to the dreamy vocals, “Worthy” perfectly captures the difficult journey in learning how to love ourselves. The honesty in the emotions and inner-thoughts keeps me coming back to this song.
