You, Steve, and Eddie have made plans to go see The Rocky Horror Picture Show tonight. The three of you are getting ready at Eddie's trailer, dressing up as your favorite characters. You're Columbia, Steve is Brad, and Eddie is of course - being the drama queen he is - Dr. Frank-n-Furter.

"Hey, Y/N? Can you come here for a sec?" Eddie calls from his bedroom. You share a rolling of eyes with Steve across the couch, getting up to see what the problem is. You walk in to see him struggling with securing his costume together.

Eddie finally clips the belt to the stocking, cheering loudly as he thrusts his fists into the air. "Yes! 'Bout fuckin' time!" You go back to the living room, grabbing your sequin tophat off the couch. "We're ready, Steve. Let's go, we'll be lucky to get seats in the back row now." You don't mean to sound so agitated, but Eddie's costume has stirred something in you that you desperately want to ignore. Steve looks at you strangely, wondering what's wrong. You meet his gaze, and dammit, he looks so cute in those glasses.

"No need to rush, Y/N. We'll get good seats, we always do." Steve says, trying to calm you. He's holding the bag of props you guys compiled together for the show. Newspaper, water guns, toast, toilet paper, playing cards, etc., everything a true Rocky Horror fan needs to truly enjoy such a campy film.

Eddie walks out to the living room, his heels clicking on the floor. Steve's eyes widen once he gets a full look at him. "See something you like, Stevie?" Eddie teases, digging out his cape from the hall closet.

"N-no. You just look more freakish than usual." Steve says, clearing his throat.

Eddie smirks, tying the cape closed around his shoulders. "If you say so. But if I didn't know any better, I'd say you're acting like a queer, Harrington."

"You're lucky I'm not offended by that. There's no need to have such an extreme reaction, though. One could argue that thou doth protest too much." Eddie laughs, continuing to taunt Steve. You can't help giggling at Eddie's teasing, earning you a glare from Steve. You try your best to stifle the laugh, thinking about something else.

"Whatever, dick. Let's get going, shall we?" Steve grumbles, leading the way out the front door of Eddie's trailer. The three of you get into Steve's car, you in front and Eddie in the back. You spend the drive to the theater glancing at Steve, unable to stop looking at him. Eddie picks up on this, smirking to himself. He leans forward, speaking into your ear.

"He sure is pretty, isn't he?" He whispers, catching you off guard. Eddie puts his hands on your shoulders to keep you calm. "Relax, Y/N. I can't say I'm not a little jealous though, I thought you only looked at me like that." Your eyes widen at his words, but he just chuckles lowly. "It's okay, sweetheart. I know how to share." Your breath hitches, hoping he's joking, or maybe not. Steve's eyes flick over to you questioningly.

"What are you two whispering about?" He asks, annoyed at being left out. He hopes you're not flirting with Eddie, he thought his feelings for you were obvious. You’ve never made a move, but he supposes that he’s never made one either. But that's only because he also has complex feelings towards Eddie. He could never say that though, there's no way Eddie feels the same. Or does he?

"It's nothing for you to worry about, Stevie. Eyes on the road, you wouldn't wanna crash when I'm dressed like this. The coroner might get the wrong idea." Eddie quips, making you laugh again. Steve scowls at the two of you, huffing loudly. He pulls up to the theater, putting the car in park. You climb out, assisting Eddie to stand up straight in his high heels. "Thanks, princess." He grins, staring down at you intensely. You can't help blushing when he looks at you like that.

The three of you walk into the theater, handing the usher your tickets. Steve leads the way to a group of three open seats a couple rows from the back. The theater is buzzing with people, most of which are also dressed up. You take the seat in the middle, with Eddie to your right and Steve on the left. Steve puts the prop bag in your lap, making it easier for everyone to reach during the movie. Your shoulders rub against theirs, causing your heartbeat to pick up. They both shrug it off, deciding to let you keep up the act. Individually, though, they each hatch a plan to draw your true feelings out of you as the movie goes on. The lights go down, and the pre-show begins. The music videos for Tim Curry's “Paradise Garage” and “I Do The Rock” play one after the other on screen. The whole theater sings along, some even standing up to dance. But the three of you stay seated, singing goofily to each other.

Found: first actively forming galaxy as lightweight as young Milky Way

For the first time, the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has detected and ‘weighed’ a galaxy that not only existed around 600 million years after the Big Bang, but also has a mass that is similar to what our Milky Way galaxy’s mass might have been at the same stage of development. Other galaxies Webb has detected at this period in the history of the Universe are significantly more massive. Nicknamed the Firefly Sparkle, this galaxy is gleaming with star clusters — 10 in all — each of which researchers examined in great detail.

“I didn’t think it would be possible to resolve a galaxy that existed so early in the Universe into so many distinct components, let alone find that its mass is similar to our own galaxy’s when it was in the process of forming,” said Lamiya Mowla, co-lead author of the paper and an assistant professor at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. “There is so much going on inside this tiny galaxy, including so many different phases of star formation.”

Webb was able to image the galaxy in sufficient detail for two reasons. One is a benefit of the cosmos: a massive foreground galaxy cluster radically enhanced the distant galaxy’s appearance through a natural effect known as gravitational lensing. And when combined with the telescope’s specialisation in high-resolution imaging of infrared light, Webb delivered unprecedented new data about the galaxy’s contents.

“Without the benefit of this gravitational lens, we would not be able to resolve this galaxy,” said Kartheik Iyer, co-lead author and NASA Hubble Fellow at Columbia University in New York. “We knew to expect it based on current physics, but it’s surprising that we actually saw it.”

Mowla, who spotted the galaxy in Webb’s image, was drawn to its gleaming star clusters, because objects that sparkle typically indicate they are extremely clumpy and complicated. Since the galaxy looks like a ‘sparkle’ or swarm of fireflies on a warm summer night, they named it the Firefly Sparkle galaxy.

Reconstructing the galaxy’s appearance

The research team modelled what the galaxy might have looked like if its image weren’t stretched by gravitational lensing and discovered that it resembled an elongated raindrop. Suspended within it are two star clusters toward the top and eight toward the bottom. “Our reconstruction shows that clumps of actively forming stars are surrounded by diffuse light from other unresolved stars,” said Iyer. “This galaxy is literally in the process of assembling.”

Webb’s data show the Firefly Sparkle galaxy is on the smaller side, falling into the category of a low-mass galaxy. Billions of years will pass before it builds its full heft and a distinct shape. “Most of the other galaxies Webb has shown us aren’t magnified or stretched, and we are not able to see their ‘building blocks’ separately. With Firefly Sparkle, we are witnessing a galaxy being assembled brick by brick,” Mowla said.

Stretched out and shining, ready for close analysis

Since the image of the galaxy is warped into a long arc, the researchers easily picked out 10 distinct star clusters, which are emitting the bulk of the galaxy’s light. They are represented here in shades of pink, purple, and blue. Those colours in Webb’s images and its supporting spectra confirmed that star formation didn’t happen all at once in this galaxy, but was staggered in time.

“This galaxy has a diverse population of star clusters, and it is remarkable that we can see them separately at such an early age of the Universe,” said Chris Willott of the National Research Council Canada, a co-author and the observation programme’s principal investigator. “Each clump of stars is undergoing a different phase of formation or evolution.”

The galaxy’s projected shape shows that its stars haven’t settled into a central bulge or a thin, flattened disc, another piece of evidence that the galaxy is still forming.

‘Glowing’ companions

Researchers can’t predict how this disorganised galaxy will build up and take shape over billions of years, but there are two galaxies that the team confirmed are ‘hanging out’ within a tight perimeter and may influence how it builds mass over billions of years.

Firefly Sparkle is only 6500 light-years away from its first companion, and its second companion is separated by 42 000 light-years. For context, the fully formed Milky Way is about 100 000 light-years across �� all three would fit inside it. Not only are its companions very close, the researchers also think that they are orbiting one another.

Each time one galaxy passes another, gas condenses and cools, allowing new stars to form in clumps, adding to the galaxies’ masses. “It has long been predicted that galaxies in the early Universe form through successive interactions and mergers with other tinier galaxies,” said Yoshihisa Asada, a co-author and doctoral student at Kyoto University in Japan. “We might be witnessing this process in action.”

“This is just the first of many such galaxies JWST will discover, as we are only starting to use these cosmic microscopes”, added team member Maruša Bradač of the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. “Just like microscopes let us see pollen grains from plants, the incredible resolution of Webb and the magnifying power of gravitational lensing let us see the small pieces inside galaxies. Our team is now analysing all early galaxies, and the results are all pointing in the same direction: we have yet to learn much more about how those early galaxies formed.”

The team’s research relied on data from Webb’s CAnadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey, which include near-infrared images from NIRCam (Near-InfraRed Camera) and spectra from the microshutter array aboard NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph). The CANUCS data intentionally covered a field that NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope imaged as part of its Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble programme.

This work was published on 12 December 2024 in the journal Nature.

Webb is the largest, most powerful telescope ever launched into space. Under an international collaboration agreement, ESA provided the telescope’s launch service, using the Ariane 5 launch vehicle. Working with partners, ESA was responsible for the development and qualification of Ariane 5 adaptations for the Webb mission and for the procurement of the launch service by Arianespace. ESA also provided the workhorse spectrograph NIRSpec and 50% of the mid-infrared instrument MIRI, which was designed and built by a consortium of nationally funded European Institutes (The MIRI European Consortium) in partnership with JPL and the University of Arizona.

CENTRE IMAGE: For the first time, astronomers have identified a still-forming galaxy that weighs about the same as our Milky Way if we could wind back the clock to see our galaxy as it developed. The newly identified galaxy, the Firefly Sparkle, is in the process of assembling and forming stars, and existed about 600 million years after the Big Bang.

The image of the galaxy is stretched and warped by a natural effect known as gravitational lensing, which allowed researchers to glean far more information about its contents. (In some areas of Webb’s image, the galaxy is magnified over 40 times.)

While it took shape, the galaxy gleamed with star clusters in a range of infrared colours, which are scientifically meaningful. They indicate that the stars formed at different periods, not all at once.

Since the galaxy image is stretched into a long line in Webb’s observations, researchers were able to identify 10 distinct star clusters and study them individually, along with the cocoon of diffuse light from the additional, unresolved stars surrounding them. That’s not always possible for distant galaxies that aren’t lensed. Instead, in many cases researchers can only draw conclusions that apply to an entire galaxy. “Most of the other galaxies Webb has shown us aren’t magnified or stretched and we are not able to see the ‘building blocks’ separately. With Firefly Sparkle, we are witnessing a galaxy being assembled brick by brick,” explains astronomer Lamiya Mowla.

There are two companion galaxies ‘hovering’ close by, which may ultimately affect how this galaxy forms and builds mass over billions of years. Firefly Sparkle is only about 6500 light-years away from its first companion, and 42 000 light-years from its second companion. Let’s compare these figures to objects that are closer to home: the Sun is about 26 000 light-years from the centre of our Milky Way galaxy, and the Milky Way is about 100 000 light-years across. Not only are Firefly Sparkle’s companions very close, the researchers also suspect that they are orbiting one another.

Belle didn’t mention the offer that Steve Rogers had given her to anyone.  But she also didn’t let the business card out of her pocket. “Belle!”  Lila yelled, finally gaining her friend’s attention.  “Where are you?” 

Belle shook her head. “Sorry, just worried about this thesis.”  

“Don’t be.  You’ve got this. Anyways, Scott called.  He asked if we were going to go out with the gang.”  

“Do I have to?”  

“Belle, c’mon.  Ever since that gala you have been so preoccupied.  Did something happen?” 

“No Lila, It was fine.  I’m sorry.”  Belle sighed. “Ok, help me find something to wear.”  

Lila pulled a blue, strapless top and black jeans. “This.  You will look hot in this.” 

The little group of friends were a mix of the Gen Ed program and the engineering program.  Scott Lang, Hope Van Dyne, Peter Parker and Michelle (MJ) Jones all hung out together most of the time.  These were the closest people Belle had in her life.   

Belle used to live with MJ and Lila before MJ and Peter decided to move in together.  Scott and Hope had their own singles but were on the same floor as Belle, MJ and Lila freshman year.  Her little adopted family took her in and she was forever grateful.  Her adopted father had died when she was 16 and she had no one left.  She was forever grateful for Phil Coulson, and she missed him dearly.  

They bar hopped until they landed at a bar in Manhattan. Peter and MJ were celebrating their recent engagement and Hope was celebrating getting into Columbia for law school. Scott was in the Gen Ed program with Belle. But he had heard that he had gotten a great job for the next school year at a prestigious high school.  Belle still hadn’t heard and this fueled her consumption of alcohol.  

Belle was tipsy but still very aware in the bar.  It was fun, lots of seating, room for dancing, a pool table.  She had been here before with Scott, teaching her to play pool. The music was a fun mix of old school pop and alternative rock.  Belle swayed to the music, occasionally singing along.  She used to sing in school but stopped once Phil was gone.  

Scott had been abnormally close this evening but Belle let it go.  Her mind kept drifting to the ocean eyes that she could still see in the back of her eyelids. She got up, a little wobble in her stance.  

“Where’re you going Belle?” Scott helped steady her.  

“Just to the bathroom.  I’ll be back.” As she waited, she pulled the business card from her pocket.  She stared at the name.

Steve was furious.  What the hell is she thinking, he thought to himself.  He called Bucky,  

Yea? 

“Can you trace Isabella Davis’s phone please?” 

Sure boss.  

“And get the car, we are headed wherever she is.”  

Belle decided she needed air. She went out to the brisk night and leaned against the wall, feeling the world spin slightly.  She was so frustrated with her career, with her life, with Steve Rogers.  She leaned her head back and closed her eyes.  She felt someone come up to her and she opened her eyes.  Scott stood up in front of her.  “Sorry.”   

“It’s ok Scotty. Did you need something?” 

“I wanted to talk to you Belle.  About something kinda important.”  

“Oh, is everything ok?”  She smiled, hoping her friend was ok.  

“Yeah, well no, but it could be.”  Scott swallowed looking more nervous.  “I was wondering if you would like to go on a date with me?” 

“A date?” Belle squeaked.  She had never considered Scott more than a friend.  

“Yeah, a date, Belle.  You’re beautiful, so smart and I’ve fallen for you.  Please?”  He leaned in.  

“Scott, wow, wait,” before she felt his lips on hers.  Suddenly they were gone.  

“She said wait,” a deep voice growled. “That’s not consent.” Steve pulled Scott away from Belle.  

Belle’s head spun.  “What are you doing here?” 

“I was worried about you.”  Steve pulled her towards him and stroked her cheek. “Are you ok?” 

“I’m fine.  I just don’t understand.”  Belle closed her eyes and felt herself falling.  

“Belle!”  Steve caught her as she tipped over.  “Belle? Can you hear me?” 

“Sure can Mr. Fancypants!”  Belle sang the words as she clutched onto him.  She shivered from the crisp air. She pressed herself against Steve’s warm body. “You’re so warm.”  

“Ok Isabella, let’s get you some water.”  Steve looked around and didn’t see the guy that tried to assault Belle anywhere.  He guided her inside and to the bar.  “Water,” he said to the bartender. Once the glass was on the bar, he handed it to Belle.  “Drink. Now.”  

“You are so bossy,” Belle said with a pout. 

“Drink the water Isabella or I will put you over my knee.”  Steve’s eyes blazed with authority.  Belle took the water and drank, some of it leaking from the corners.  She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.  “Good girl,” he whispered in her ear. “Let me take you home.”  

“I came with Lila.”  

“Ok stay right here.”  

Belle watched as he approached a dark hair man who was talking with Lila.  Lila spoke back to him and then glanced at Belle with a smirk.  Belle started to feel dizzy again as Steve approached her again.  “Think you can tell me where I need to go?” 

“Nope because I see two of you so I don’t know who to talk to.”  

“Ok, Miss Davis, lets go.”  

“Can’t walk.  So sorry to disappoint,” Belle said with a giggle.  She twirled around and stopped.  “My head hurts.”  

“Isabella? Are you ok?” 

“I feel like I’m going to faint.”  

“What? Right now?” Steve asked as he saw Belle close her eyes. He grasped her as she went limp in his arms.  “C’mon baby,” he said as he adjusted to carry her to the car.  Bucky came a few moments later. “Is Delilah ok?” 

“Yeah, also got a date with her so I’m happy.” Bucky smirked.  “Where to?” 

“Home.  I don’t want to leave her alone.”  He cradled Belle in his arms.  How did he end up this lucky? They got to his apartment, and he took her up to his room.  He laid her gently down and removed her shoes and socks, her jeans and lacy top.  He grabbed one of his shirts and sipped it over her.  He pulled back the covers and placed her in between.  

He went to his office and shut everything down.  Bucky came in.  “Is she ok punk?” 

“Yea, I put her to bed.  Can you get her some clothes?  Jeans, top, underwear.” 

“Sure. I’ll have it here in the morning.”  

“Thanks Jerk.  I’m going to turn in.”  

“Is Miss Davis in the guest room?” 

“No,” Steve cleared his throat.  “She’s in my room.”  

“Steve…” Bucky started.  

“I know Buck.  But she’s different.  We’ll see in the morning.”  

“Whatever you say man.  Good night.”  

“Night.”  Steve headed back to his room, where Belle hadn’t moved.  He placed two ibuprofen and a glass of water on the night side table.  He stripped down and climbed into the bed next to her.  He leaned over and kissed her forehead.  “Good night sweet Belle.”

Rocky: There are a lot of Rocky films, counting Creed as well, but nothing tops the first Rocky movie, the best top-to-bottom film in the series.

Porco Rosso: Everyone loves Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle, and they are right to do some, Miyazaki is one of the GOATs for a reason. But in my eyes, his best film is Porco Rosso. The landscape shots showcase his love of the Adriatic and Italy, the characters are lovely, and the dub, oh my goodness Michael Keaton as Porco is *chef's kiss*

Treasure Planet: Peak Disney movie, hyper fixated on it as a kid, and still love it to this day.

BECK Mongolian Chop Squad: This is the quintessential HAUNT anime. Very down-to-earth, simple but engaging story about someone finding their place in the world. In Beck's case, it's Koiyuki becoming this amazing singer/rhythm guitarist, and helping Beck become a premiere band in Japan.

Gurren Lagann: It's mother fuckin Gurren Lagann man, go watch it.

Steins;Gate: The group chat between me and some of my closest homies is called Future Gadget Labs NA, if that doesn't tell you how much this show brought me and my friends together, then I don't know what else to tell you. Never played the VN but the Anime was great!

Samurai Champloo: Life-changing anime, changed my whole perspective on music and my relationship to it. Helps that the show is GAS, with one of the hardest dubs out there.

Eden of the East: Just a straight up solid show with some good movies attached to it.

Firefly Sparkle: Newly discovered galaxy mirrors Milky Way's early days

For the first time, the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has detected and "weighed" a galaxy that not only existed about 600 million years after the Big Bang, but also has a mass that is similar to what our Milky Way galaxy's mass might have been at the same stage of development.

Other galaxies Webb has detected at this period in the history of the universe are significantly more massive. Nicknamed the Firefly Sparkle, this galaxy is gleaming with star clusters—10 in all—each of which researchers examined in great detail. Their work is published in Nature.

"I didn't think it would be possible to resolve a galaxy that existed so early in the universe into so many distinct components, let alone find that its mass is similar to our own galaxy's when it was in the process of forming," said Lamiya Mowla, co-lead author of the paper and an assistant professor at Wellesley College in Massachusetts. "There is so much going on inside this tiny galaxy, including so many different phases of star formation."

Webb was able to image the galaxy in sufficient detail for two reasons. One is a benefit of the cosmos: A massive foreground galaxy cluster radically enhanced the distant galaxy's appearance through a natural effect known as gravitational lensing. And when combined with the telescope's specialization in high-resolution imaging of infrared light, Webb delivered unprecedented new data about the galaxy's contents.

"Without the benefit of this gravitational lens, we would not be able to resolve this galaxy," said Kartheik Iyer, co-lead author and NASA Hubble Fellow at Columbia University in New York. "We knew to expect it based on current physics, but it's surprising that we actually saw it."

Mowla, who spotted the galaxy in Webb's image, was drawn to its gleaming star clusters, because objects that sparkle typically indicate they are extremely clumpy and complicated. Since the galaxy looks like a "sparkle" or swarm of fireflies on a warm summer night, they named it the Firefly Sparkle galaxy.

Reconstructing the galaxy's appearance

The research team modeled what the galaxy might have looked like if its image weren't stretched by gravitational lensing and discovered that it resembled an elongated raindrop. Suspended within it are two star clusters toward the top and eight toward the bottom. "Our reconstruction shows that clumps of actively forming stars are surrounded by diffuse light from other unresolved stars," said Iyer. "This galaxy is literally in the process of assembling."

Webb's data show the Firefly Sparkle galaxy is on the smaller side, falling into the category of a low-mass galaxy. Billions of years will pass before it builds its full heft and a distinct shape. "Most of the other galaxies Webb has shown us aren't magnified or stretched, and we are not able to see their 'building blocks' separately. With Firefly Sparkle, we are witnessing a galaxy being assembled brick by brick," Mowla said.

Stretched out and shining, ready for close analysis

Since the image of the galaxy is warped into a long arc, the researchers easily picked out 10 distinct star clusters, which are emitting the bulk of the galaxy's light. They are represented here in shades of pink, purple, and blue. Those colors in Webb's images and its supporting spectra confirmed that star formation didn't happen all at once in this galaxy, but was staggered in time.

"This galaxy has a diverse population of star clusters, and it is remarkable that we can see them separately at such an early age of the universe," said Chris Willott of the National Research Council Canada, a co-author and the observation program's principal investigator. "Each clump of stars is undergoing a different phase of formation or evolution."

The galaxy's projected shape shows that its stars haven't settled into a central bulge or a thin, flattened disk, another piece of evidence that the galaxy is still forming.

Columbia Fireflies invite fans to audition to sing the National Anthem at Segra Park

There are several news reports in Columbia, SC area nowadays. In a recent news article, it was reported that the Columbia Fireflies has announced that fans are invited to audition live to perform the National Anthem in 2025. Aside from that, it was mentioned in the news that the fireflies say they are seeking singers and musicians of all ages to perform The Star-Spangled Banner before Fireflies home games this upcoming season. Furthermore, the auditions will be held on designated days in March, and soloists and groups are both encouraged to audition. Finally, the auditions are held by reservation only.

The ceremony will include remarks from Larry Leopard, associate director, and Bill Hill, director of Marshall’s Office of Safety and Mission Assurance. NASA/ Krisdon Manecke NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, invites media to attend its observance of the agency’s Day of Remembrance at 9:30 a.m. CST Thursday, Jan. 23, in the lobby of Building 4221. Day of Remembrance honors the members of the NASA family who lost their lives while furthering the cause of exploration and discovery.  The event will include brief remarks from NASA Marshall leaders, followed by a candle lighting and moment of silence for the crews of Apollo 1 and space shuttles Challenger and Columbia.
