I can’t get over that Tommy was literally running after Buck at the end of 8x05 (just trying to keep up, deleted scene, blah blah) only to have the breakup in 8x06.
Regardless of whether or not they were endgame, it just didn’t feel good to have it end like that.
And also… I think there were some easy changes they could have made to 8x05 to show some cracks. Maybe instead of Tommy staying over on the couch, we see him leaving and coming back in the morning. Maybe he’s not there for the graveyard scene, or Eddie is there for Buck instead.
The things they said about the relationship in interviews in season 7 don’t jive with the writing this season. I’d have rather have him written off between seasons like they did with Natalia, or have them break up in between seasons and the rest of Lou’s contract fulfilled with the awkwardness that comes from dealing with an ex at work. How does the rest of the 118 react? Are he and Eddie still friends? Etc etc etc.
At the very least, could the scene not have been written in a way that Buck is the one to end it? We’ve never seen him break up with someone - that actually could have been a really interesting step forward for his character! Recognizing that maybe this relationship isn’t the one for him, having agency in how it ends.
Also this is at least the third person that’s broken up with him in that loft, he should move ASAP.
