how can you tell the difference between a mink/sepia and just a really dark seal?? is it only based on eye color or are there other signs

Oh, i'm actually planning to write a proper post about this in the future, but here's a short observation:

Yes, eye color is a great clue, probably the best, but my amateur advice for adult seals: look at the neck. Even a very dark point will usually have a light, creamish-white "collar" and/or "apron".

For minks and sepias, in my experience the area is either uniform with the body (which can be pretty pale, especially for younger animals!), or only lightens up to a soft brown, not to almost white.

A beautiful example:

[ID: Hayley, a black tabby norwegian forest cat lies on her back, and several rather grown kittens are crowding around her. Next to the kittens another adult black tabby lies peacefully.]

Hayley (from the Nordic Verden cattery) suckling both her own (black tabbies) and Lora's kits (blue tabbies with white). I think the other full-grown cat is Lora herself.

They definitely look like family to me.

Do you have any side-by-side examples of chocolate points vs seal points, and/or pictures of the difference in their paw pads? I'm trying to find a good way of differentiating them lol

For me, i found that the best clue is the color of the paws, it's much more creamy brown for chocolates.
