Our selection of some new bejeweled watches dressed in springtime colors and brimming with feminine charm.

This year’s edition of Baselworld got underway on the day of the vernal equinox under sunny blue skies as winter gave way to spring in what has been a year of seismic transitions for the annual watch and jewelry trade show.

Starting last summer when the Swatch group announced its exit, the fair has seen its roster of exhibitors steadily melt away – like snow on the distant peaks – and tumble down to about 500, a third of what it once boasted in its glory days a decade ago.    

Thankfully, despite the troubling erosion, there was no scarcity in the category of high jewelry timepieces as some of the show’s most storied brands, having answered present to the rollcall, turned out some stunning new bejeweled watches dressed in springtime colors and brimming with feminine charm.

At Jacob & Co., the power of flowers in bloom Since it first debuted at Baselworld in 2014, the Astronomia Tourbillon has helped to propel Jacob & Co.’s ambitions into higher spheres, including the outer edges of space when the New York-based jeweler launched its Solar Planets model in 2017.  

This spring, the high-flying timepiece has returned to earth to spawn a new version of the Astronomia, in a charming flowering garden where it has blossomed into Fleurs de Jardin.  

“This is a feminine version of the Solar that had the sun on the center and the planets going around,” said Jacob & Co. at the launch of the timepiece.   “We have transformed it into a flower garden with new details that make it ultra-feminine.”

Notwithstanding its vertically stacked movement, Fleurs de Jardin is unmistakably “ultra-feminine” thanks to 11 different flowers in varied cuts of citrine, tsavorite, amethyst, orange garnet and ruby, all blooming gloriously under the high sapphire-glass dome of the watch that doubles as greenhouse.  A “Jacob-cut” citrine globe with 288 facets, firmly planted in the center, observes the seductive languor of the movement that turns around a central axis and completes a full revolution every 10 minutes.  A gem-set, butterfly-shaped folding buckle adds a final pretty touch to Fleurs de Jardin and completes its girlish looks.

Still, like the woman you think you know, she is never quite the same.  “The watch is constantly changing its look because the elements on the dial turn nonstop,” Jacob & Co. said.

Available in an edition of 18 in blue and rose, it is an Eden in full bloom, priced 360,000 Swiss francs.

At Kerbedanz, hope springs eternal Kerbedanz’s timepieces are ripe with symbolism, and this year, the promise of spring was illustrated by “Hope,” one of the three virtues right alongside “Faith” and “Charity.”  

With those good words, Kerbedanz, based in Neuchâtel, introduced its new version of hope in pink sapphires, in the form of an Esperanza Classique, presented as symbolizing an “attitude of the mind,” but also flinging much attitude from the wrist.

“Hope is an attitude of the mind to consider the possibility, the belief or the faith in a better future,” Kerbedanz said.

The backstory of the Kerbedanz’s Esperanza timepieces relates to Greek mythology, and the tale of Pandora and her jar from which all the evils of humanity escaped while hope was kept safely unboxed.

The new Esperanza Classique, expression of a hope for a bright future, boasts an 18-carat yellow gold case, decorated with nearly 10 carats of pink sapphires.  The crown is set between 1 and 2 o’clock and the lugs made to bear 0.37 carats of diamonds.

Limited to 41 pieces priced 65,000 Swiss francs, with this pink Esperanza Classique “the light of hope continues to shine, thus ensuring the future salvation of humanity,” even with the lights dimmed.

At Bulgari, the art of serpentine seduction The new Serpenti Seduttori collection, the highlight of this year’s women’s watches at Bulgari, builds on the Roman jeweler’s love affair with snakes which started in the 1940s when the coiled “Serpenti” motif first appeared in its watch repertoire.  

Since then, the motif has been revisited many times, but this year, the snake appears to have shed its old skin, morphing into an ardent instrument of reptilian seduction.

In the fully-pavé rose gold version, Serpenti Seduttori is particularly well-poised to redefine the tenets of desirability.  Its “drop-shaped” case is thinner than that of the Serpenti Tubogas, its predecessor, despite the 50 brilliant-cut diamonds set on its bezel and the additional 166 snow-set diamonds on the case itself.  With a scale-like pattern, its slinky, articulated bracelet - a more figurative design than seen at Bulgari in previous versions - now slides smoothly on the wrist.  Its crown is topped with a cabochon-cut ruby, a nod to Bulgari’s jewelry heritage.

Priced at €88,200, Serpenti Seduttori exudes the confidence of a snake slithering with charm.

At Chanel, the illuminations of a ruby On this year of Chanel’s revival of the J12, new versions of the Code Coco were serious competition to what became two decades ago an instant bestseller for the fashion house.

Since 2017, Chanel’s Code Coco watch, as the name suggests, has captured some of the Maison’s signature design codes, from the quilting on the watch strap to the clasp of the 2.55 handbag that has become the face of the watch.  

This year, Chanel has added five new versions to its Code Coco lineup, all with diamond-set dials on a choice of bracelet in stainless steel or ceramic and, for the first time, a beige-gold option.

Among those, the most stunning spring-hued iteration is a ruby-set pièce unique Code Coco displayed under a glass dome.  Its case and bezel, both in 18-carat white gold, stand out against a wrap-around bracelet, a bright pigeon-blood red, set with 315 baguette-cut rubies from Burma and Mozambique weighing at 62.81 carats, all invisible-set from end-to-end.  Its two dials are set with 60 brilliant-cut diamonds, while a single princess-cut diamond sits in the center of the top dial.  

This crimson Code Coco, with a unique €1.75 million price tag to match, will not be going gently into the night.

I know it is a tad close to be posting a wish list, but I wanted to do something a little bit different this year. Since my birthday is only four days away from Christmas, these two events are usually compacted into one. I am used to that being the case, so I thought I would create a fantasy Christmas/birthday wish list! Of course, I am not expecting any of these items to be under the tree or in my stocking since the price tags on these are pretty outrageous; unless Santa has a miracle or two up his sleeves!

Just as a quick disclaimer, I want to say that I do NOT own any of the pictures. They have all come from the internet since I did not go to the stores to take pictures of each item.

Tom Ford Fucking Fabulous Candle - $108

I own the eau de parfum version of this scent, and it absolutely lives up to its namesake. I think the minimalistic matte black design is so beautiful and would make such an amazing addition to my home décor. Except, there is no chance in hell that I can justify burning money in such a literal sense. Haha.

Versace Les Etoiles de la Mer Bathrobe - $600

Would this robe not be great for taking out the trash or grabbing the gate when I have visitors? In all seriousness, I have no idea how people can justify spending such an extravagant amount of money on loungewear that never leaves the house. I just bought a robe from TJ Maxx a few weeks ago for a fraction of the price, and it is oh so plush and amazing! I actually really like the classic black one, but everyone who could have it does have it. This gray one is pretty cool since it has the oceanic motifs, and I actually love the sea and its mythologies.

Chanel Double-sided Throw Pillow - $660

Is this worth buying? Absolutely not; however, for no significant reason, I have had my eye on this pillow for a few years now. I have had the privilege of holding this pillow in the boutique, the wool and cashmere blend feels amazing against the skin. I would never sleep on it though, so what’s the point? I was not able to find a proper picture of the pillow, but the other side is the inverse of this color combination.

Gucci GucciGhost Egg UFO Pouch - $795

Have you ever slept on an item only to have it haunt your dreams later on? The GucciGhost collection was what initially turned me on to Gucci. The only problem: this came out before I was able to (sort of) freely spend my money. Even though I was able to fit a piece from this collection into my budget, I could not fit this pouch. It literally sold out a week or so after I saw it online, and now I cannot find it ANYWHERE. If anyone knows where I can find this piece from a reputable retailer, please let me know!

Christian Louboutin Crosta Star Dandelion Flat - $825

I feel like a lot of people are going to think that these are out of style now since everyone is all about the Gooch, but I have never been one to care about that type of talk. I think I would really be able to style it for both day and night looks. I do not know if this look would age me significantly, but I have had my eye on this iconic shoe since high school. I actually wanted the velvet version, which also features a little bit of shimmer, but I was not able to locate it online. I am worried that it has been discontinued, but I would not consider this suede version a consolation prize or a “settling.”

Hermes Kelly Bracelet - $8,350

Not only is the turn clasp a show stopping detail on a bracelet, it is an iconic/signature element of Kelly and Birkin handbags! This piece is absolutely beautiful with four diamonds set on the plaque where nails would typically be when attached to the handbags. I have never seen this bracelet in person, but I think I might have to make room for this piece in 2019.

Cartier Love Bracelet - $6,780

Cartier Juste un Clou Bracelet - $7,300

As basic as this may be, I must admit that I have had my eye on these two pieces since 2014 after a young Ms. Kylie Jenner made headlines for rocking armfuls of these bracelets. However, I have since learned about the history and heritage of the brand and have fallen deeper in love with these iconic pieces of jewelry.

Cartier Panthere de Cartier Necklace - $19,700

This is the highest priced item on my wish list, but just look at it! This necklace is SUCH a statement and conversational piece. The geometric design adds a modern touch to abrand known for its elegance, and the panther’s eyes are set with two tsavorite garnet gems while the nose is set with onyx. There is absolutely no denying how beautiful this is, but alas, it costs more than my current car!

I hope you enjoyed going through it as much I did putting it together. Maybe you even found some inspiration for your own wish lists! This was obviously just for fun. The holidays are not about the material things you get, but the time that is spent with your loved ones. Five Women’s Masterpieces From Watches & Wonders 2020

Wouldn’t you know it: The year Watches & Wonders brands introduce the most outstanding selection of women’s watches ever is the year we can’t see or touch the new introductions. The following watches, which would have been introduced in Geneva in April, collectively represent the best women’s watches have to offer today: state-of-the-art mechanical movements sized to fit women’s wrists; innovative gem-setting techniques designed to enhance sparkle; impressive metiers execution; iconic pieces with neo-vintage details; and imaginative modern design.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso One

The Reverso started out as a sports watch for polo players who wanted to protect the glass on their watches in the days before sapphire crystal. But Jaeger-LeCoultre has been making women’s versions at least since 1931 — a piece from that era inspired the new Reverso One. The vivid red of the front dial is the result of multiple layers of lacquer over a sunray guilloché pattern, also known as flinqué. The combination of the two finishes is more shimmery than regular lacquer and brighter than regular guilloché. The matching red-wine-colored alligator strap makes it stand out even more. The stainless steel case is a very wearable 40mm-long by 20mm-wide by 7.9mm-thick, and it is given a fairly high polish. The reverse case side is blank, and that is deliberate — it can be personalized by the owner with an engraving of a significant date, special message, or a design of choice. A row of 27 diamonds totaling 0.3 carat line the gadroons at the top and bottom of the case. They are grain set, which means they are surrounded by as little metal as possible in order to allow more light return. The movement is quartz. It is priced at $5,350.

Hermès Cape Cod Martlée

Hermès borrows a trick from the jeweler’s bench here, inflicting a hammered finish on the case, a treatment that is usually done on gold, which is softer, but here is applied to stainless steel. The finish highlights the Cape Cod’s distinctive square-within-a-rectangle anchor-chain shape. The Martlée is named for the French word for the hammer-like tool that is used to make the indentations, which is much harder to do with stainless steel than it is with gold. The pitted finish creates an interesting light and shadow effect and gives every case a unique surface texture and patina. The dial is given the same hammered treatment and then is finished with a layer of translucent lacquer in graded shades ranging from anthracite to black. Like the case, each dial is slightly different. Even the chaîne d’ancre (anchor chain) half-links that attach the strap to the case are hammered. The Barenia calfskin strap can be either single- or double-wrap. The movement is quartz. Price on request.

Cartier Maillon de Cartier

Cartier headlined its Watches & Wonders releases this year with a reboot of the Pasha, the popular ’80s sports watch that originally launched as a men’s watch but quickly became the brand’s bestselling women’s line. But in terms of true novelty, the Maillon de Cartier is the real news from Cartier this year. The focus of the watch is the 18k-gold bracelet (maillon is French for “link”), a twisted take on the chain-link style, with offset links aligned on the bias. The angular, layered construction seems ideally matched to Cartier’s signature Roman numerals, and the watch works well as a piece of chunky jewelry. “We wanted to deconstruct the bracelet and transcend its design through a volume approach,” says Marie-Laure Céréde, Cartier’s timepieces creation director. Mission accomplished. The Maillon de Cartier comes in red, yellow, and white 18k gold, with a diamond bezel option. The white gold piece is fully paved. The yellow gold versions come with blue lacquer, tsavorite, or black lacquer dials and on the bevels of the bracelet links. The link fronts and bezels are set with diamonds. It is quartz. Prices start at $25,100.

Piaget Limelight Gala

Piaget’s Limelight Gala collection was originally introduced in 1973 but still looks fresh today. The distinctive design, with asymmetrical lugs that extend from each side of the case, is unchanged and seems made for gem-setting. The gems are set using the serti descendu or cut-down technique, in which the gold is carved away to form claws and grooves that grip the stone – the point is to have less metal surround the stone. That way, more light can enter the pavilion and then reflect out through the facets of the table. This is the process that produces a gem’s brilliance. The new models are set with diamonds and/or sapphires, and there is a high jewelry version set with 12.42 carats of round brilliant and marquise cut diamonds. The dials are mother of pearl or translucent blue grand feu enamel over gold. There are also three limited-edition models with aventurine glass dials and a one-of-a-kind piece with a dial made of Ethiopian black opal that is set with blue, yellow, orange, and pink sapphires for a total of 158 gems totaling 13.15 carats. The bracelets are engraved gold using a technique originating in the 1960s. It takes eight hours to engrave one bracelet. Prices on request.

Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Tourbillon

The Traditionnelle Tourbillon is the Vacheron Constantin’s first tourbillon for women. It could be for men with smaller wrists — the case is 39mm-wide by 11.22mm-thick — because men are also buying diamonds now, which adds to the intrinsic value of the watch. The bezel, case, and tourbillon diadem are set with 291 diamonds totaling 3.57 carats. A full jewelry version is set with 559 brilliant-cut and baguette-cut diamonds totaling more than 6.5 carats. The movement, automatic caliber 2160, is slender (5.65mm-thick) thanks to a peripheral rotor. It has an 80-hour power reserve and a small seconds display that is so discreet you could easily miss it — a small blackened screw on the front bar of the tourbillon carriage counts the seconds as it rotates. You won’t know the exact second since, instead of an index, there is a row of diamonds set into the flange on the periphery of the tourbillon opening. The version with a mother-of-pearl dial and 291 diamonds is priced at $142,000. The jewelry version, with 559 diamonds, is boutique-only, priced at $197,000 and delivered on a blue satin strap and a second blue strap in alligator leather.

October Birthstone Opal: Dazzling Colors at Play@thereal.su

The October birthstone opal has more variety of color and pattern than any other gemstone. Opal has always been considered somewhat mysterious and mercurial, probably because it embraces the colors of so many other precious and semiprecious stones. The experts at the(GIA) describe opal’s elusive qualities like this: “Fireworks. Jellyfish. Galaxies. Fake Panthere de Cartier Necklace Lightning.
