VP Harris unleashes Tim Walz!
August 14, 2024
Robert B. Hubbell
Three overlapping developments on Tuesday boosted Democratic prospects in November. The race remains tight nationally, in swing states, and in the electoral college —but the trends all favor Democrats.
The developments include Governor Tim Walz's strong debut as a solo campaigner, the fallout from Trump’s anti-union remarks on Musk's Twitter interview on Monday, and the qualification of ballot initiatives in Arizona and Missouri that would guarantee reproductive freedom for citizens of those states.
Tim Walz makes strong solo debut in Los Angeles
Proving the wisdom of selecting Tim Walz for the vice-presidential slot, Walz turned in a strong performance during his first solo campaign outing at the Los Angeles convention of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. Tim Walz gave a rousing speech, emphasizing the Harris-Walz support for labor unions—and Trump-Vance’s hostility to organized labor.
The full speech is included in this article: PBS News, Walz tells union members in Los Angeles that Trump and Vance have ‘waged war on working people’. It is worth your time to watch a few minutes of the twenty-minute speech. It will inspire confidence in Tim Walz as a partner, ally, and effective surrogate for Kamala Harris.
As usual, Tim Walz did not mince words. While noting that he and Kamala Harris both joined union members on the picket lines, he reminded the audience of 4,000 union members that UAW president Shawn Fain just called Donald Trump “a scab.” Walz said that Trump had spent his career “stiffing service workers on his own properties” and opposing increases in the minimum wage.
Walz recounted Trump's recent statement at a gathering of billionaires, “You’re rich as hell and we are going to cut your taxes.” Walz asked, “Who do you know wants to cut taxes on billionaires but opposes raising the minimum?” Walz then put a cherry on top by reviewing the Senate voting record of JD Vance, noting that he is one of only four Senators who “has never cast a vote in favor of a pro-worker bill.”
Walz addressed the manufactured controversy over his military service record by taking the high road, praising everyone who “put on the uniform” to serve our country:
[JD Vance] is attacking me for my record of service. I am proud to serve my country and always will be.  . . . I was a member of the Veterans Affair Committee and a champion of our men and women in uniform. I am damn proud of my service to this country, and I firmly believe you should never denigrate another person’s service record. For anyone brave enough to put on the uniform for our great country, including my opponent, I have just a few simple words: Thank you for your service and sacrifice.
Walz’s earnest delivery on this point is worth watching. See the jump link to the video here: Tim Walz comments on his service in the National Guard.
Walz closed his speech by urging Democrats and union members not to take anything for granted in the 2024 election:
This is going to be a close, tough race. But if each of us does an extra shift, devotes an extra hour, does a little bit more, we get to wake up on the morning after the election and know that the work we did transformed the lives of millions, transformed generations, impacted the world. That’s how it happens. We organize, we donate, we volunteer. . . . We have eighty four days to control our destiny.
It is easy to see why Tim Walz has a net positive (11+) favorability rating—a rating that eclipses every other candidate on the presidential and vice-presidential slates for 2024. JD Vance, by comparison, has a net negative (-9) favorability rating nationally, a rarity for a vice-presidential candidate. Worse (for Vance), among the voters who know him best (in Ohio), Vance holds a negative favorability rating of -16!
The more voters get to know Tim Walz, the more they like him. The opposite is true for JD Vance. Kamala Harris chose well!
UAW sues Trump and Musk for comments made during Trump's Twitter interview
Among the many bizarre occurrences during Musk’s “conversation” with Trump on Twitter, Trump praised Musk for firing workers at Telsa who attempted to unionize. See Newsweek, Donald Trump Cheers Elon Musk Over Firing Workers: 'You're the Greatest!'
During the Twitter conversation, Trump said,
I love it. You're the greatest . . . I mean, I look at what you do. You just walk in and you just say, 'You wanna quit?' They go on strike, I won't mention the name of the company, but they go on strike and you say, 'That's OK, you're all gone . . . Every one of you is gone.'"
Unfortunately for Trump and Musk, it is a violation of federal law to intimidate workers for attempting to organize. On Tuesday, the UAW filed a complaint against both Trump and Musk. The UAW issued a blistering statement along with the complaint:
Under federal law, workers cannot be fired for going on strike, and threatening to do so is illegal under the National Labor Relations Act. “When we say Donald Trump is a scab, this is what we mean. When we say Trump stands against everything our union stands for, this is what we mean,” said UAW President Shawn Fain. “Donald Trump will always side against workers standing up for themselves, and he will always side with billionaires like Elon Musk, who is contributing $45 million a month to a Super PAC to get him elected. Both Trump and Musk want working class people to sit down and shut up, and they laugh about it openly. It’s disgusting, illegal, and totally predictable from these two clowns.”
Ouch! For a hot minute, Trump was courting the labor vote. No more! Although the Teamsters Union declined (last month) to endorse Biden or Trump, the Black Caucus of the Teamsters Union voted on Tuesday (after the Twitter interview) to endorse Kamala Harris. See. Politico, Teamsters' Black caucus defies leadership with Harris endorsement.
So, in an unscripted “interview” with Elon Musk, Trump manages to start a war with organized labor. Meanwhile, Tim Walz is proving his chops as a national campaign surrogate for Kamala Harris. It’s nice when Democratic strengths overlap with Republican weaknesses.

Sea Salt Beach Boardwalk, Ep. 1
Katie is a large woman, no one has ever denied that. She's a true local; she practically grew up on the boardwalk. Therefore, she spent all of her summers as a kid begging her parents for candy at the candy shop, all of her teenage summers flirting with the boy behind the ice cream counter (who was all too happy to give the chubby girl some free ice cream now and then), and as soon as she turned 18 she started working at the Candy Factory Sweet Shop to make some money and sample the merchandise as she pleased.
Katie's favorite candy in the shop is the handmade fudge. It's easy to make, very filling, and tastes sooooooo good. With her employee discount making it basically free, Katie eats at least an entire block of fudge every shift. Since they have dozens of fudge flavors to choose from, she never gets bored of it. Their caramels are also known for being fantastic, as is their taffy. Those aren't very filling, but they're a tasty little snack to pop in your mouth. The artisanal chocolates, Katie has found, are great gifts for welcoming new faces to the pier. They're like, addictingly good, and almost always ensure repeat customers.
Katie takes most of her lunch breaks at the Fry Hut with her best friend Sarah. They chat and gossip and giggle as best friends do over buckets and buckets of french fries, fried chicken, fried fish, corndogs, onion rings, and even more french fries. About three times a week before work, for breakfast the girls would get what they called 'beach babes brunch' from a diner just off the shore which consisted of a tall stack of pancakes, bacon and eggs, and iced coffees-- Katie took hers with mostly cream and only a little coffee.
Her steady diet of fried snacks and candy meant that after 10 years of working at the Candy Factory, the chubby teen had blossomed into an enormously fat woman. Her long luscious blonde hair frames her double chins, round cheeks, and wide smile. She has strikingly wide hips (good thing the shop has a wide double door, she needs it!). Her big belly rests on her lap while she sits behind the fudge counter. Her belly jiggles when she laughs with customers as she does every day. She is always full of candy and zest for life. Katie is the poster girl for fat and happy.
She worked her way up to manager of the Candy Factory, but she kept her first uniform as a keepsake. Adorable that she ever fit into an XL polo shirt. In the shop office, there are photos of the staff from every summer dating back decades. Katie loves these pictures not only because they remind her of her old friends, but because they show very clearly how much she grew over the years: from just over 200 pounds her first summer to a glowing 254 pounds the following year, on and on with a new uniform to fit her growing body every season until this year: She'd accidentally outgrown the largest size the uniform manufacturer makes! At a heavy and still growing 517 pounds, 28-year-old Katie finally got to create her own uniform, though sometimes she still wears her old one, just to show off how tight it is.
Recently, Katie's Candy Factory got a new hire. Katie is working on training Jen, whose resume for retail work was strong, but seems to lack the enthusiasm for sweets. Jen has a particularly dark demeanor; you'd guess by looking at her she never really left her goth phase. Her baby blue Medium work polo looks comically cheery against her jet-black hair and facial piercings. Jen is a college student who's only working for the summer, but Katie is determined that in just three months she'll teach Jen what makes candy so wonderful, even if it means she has to feed her new samples every day. Besides, Katie thinks, Jen is so skinny anyway, she could use some candy in that belly.

watching smallville is helping me unpack the ethos of white America.
They completely misrepresented human nature in order to perpetuate capitalism and colonialism.
Instead of the reality of humans being and existing as animals within nature and noting that our evolution and beginning of society was because of our innate sense of empathy and drive for community, our first sign of civilization being that of a healed bone showing that someone protected, fed, cared for, etc. someone else while they healed, we developed sciences, math, art, healing practices not simply for ourselves but to connect and enjoy one another, we have a manufactured reality that we are “born in sin,” innately greedy, selfish, yearning for power. This manufactured misrepresentation is because we are only “allowed” to study white men. Value and humanity is only allotted to white men who now represent human nature. We ignore and devalue indigenous teachings and practices. This makes us accepts the ideas and implications of capitalism and colonialism. We accept the idea that we need to be policed and governed despite the fact that crime diminishes without poverty (why aren’t white neighborhoods as policed and still safe and functioning??) and our accountability to community is what kept society safe and functioning. We accept imperialism and European paternalism. We accept individualism over collective. It endangers us. We accept racism: “there’s always going to be an in group and out group. An us vs them.” Something I’ve heard from peers in “anti-racist” classrooms. We accept this murder of the earth.
We accept the idea that we have to do things. I just realized how powerful the joke, “all I have to do is be Black and die,” is: all we have to do is be and then stop being. We most definitely don’t have to live this uniform, crappy, traumatizing life. We now believe our deserving of love and rest is depending on our productivity. We accept uniform lifestyles despite how unique we all are. We accept unlivable wages, no access to healthcare, inflation, having to pay to exist (food, shelter, water, etc.), horribly lacking miseducation systems, the majority of our lives dedicated to bringing wealth to 1% who spend it on sick shit. We accept wage slavery. We accept chattel slavery (mass incarceration). We accept the fact that children must be enslaved and maimed to give us phones and clothing. We blindly accept propaganda. We accept the fact that America can not fund any of these things for community but can fund wars and ethnic cleansing. But if they were to do anything remotely similar here, we would meddle in their continent for years!! We claim the existence of first world countries and this world countries when our “first world country” is surviving on the land, labor and people of “third world countries.” We accept food apartheid that prevents a lot of people from boycotting heinous companies. We accept the alienation and are lonely with no sense of community.
We accept the idea of anarchy as unbridled chaos, raping, pillaging, murder. No. That’s what’s happening now under this policing institution. Under capitalism and colonialism. Smallville ended an episode about a child veteran who lost his life in combat with the line that he sacrificed his life [in the US military] “saving the world.” Nevermind the fact that he enlisted because he was too poor to pursue college and football like he wanted, but to equate, unequivocally, the US military with saving the world was a powerful statement. How unchecked our propaganda media is. To end an episode with this assertion, left no room for it to be questioned: no thought into why the boy was in this foreign country or what he was doing there and how was it “saving the world.” No room for knowledge. I recall photos and accounts that resurface much later detailing what Americans really do in these foreign countries. What they do to the people. “Winners write history.” For the first time, I am able to see just how one-sided mainstream news outlets are. They show, and now force Americans to live in, a false reality. Journalists are supposed to be protected. But apparently only the ‘winner’s’ journalists are.
People like to claim tv shows, social media, etc. isn’t important and shouldn’t be taken serious. To focus of politics in government. This is art. This is what people are spending most of the free time allotted them consuming. This is an institution. Just as government. Just as religion.
Even in their falsehoods, we can still see the truth. Speaking of this institution that has been weaponized by those in power, didn’t Jesus save us? By your own logic, did he not free us from this so called evil human nature? As someone who has descended from people who were enslaved during chattel slavery, my lens for Christianity has always been different. I never identified with the whitewashed, white supremacist, policing, institutional state force misrepresentation of Jesus and questioned the attempts of the Black church to make him so. Why would he subscribe to the made up idealogy of gender that only exist to reinforce white supremacy? Why would he want me silenced? Why do I have to wear a dress? Why is being ladylike important as a Christian? Why would homosexuality be considered wrong while murdering and spreading hatred was not (mistranslation closer to pedophilia and mostly mentioned in the Old Testament)? I learned to contextualize and understand the history during the Bible and its translations over time. I identified with the wooly haired and “burnished bronze, refined as in a furnace” Jesus that was yelling and flipping tables. I identified with the Jesus that was about listening to sex workers and against policing. I identified with Jesus that ate with people deemed unsavory by the white regime and others of his own people that were hypocrites. I identified with the Jesus that sacrificed for his community, died young, and was about love for oneself and one’s neighbors. Religious trauma has pushed many Black spiritualists away, but I urge people to learn from the theology and not from what it has been weaponized to propose. God is in us. We are made in their image. We are reflections of one another. I feel this when I observe nature. When I experience humanity. I see the patterns throughout other religions as well that seem to reinforce this same premise. I recall indigenous cultures that “worship,” another westernized concept, or express gratitude to things in nature by name. Why not if you see these living things just as valuable as you are? Christians express gratitude for these specific things in nature to One being.
I implore people to alchemize their anger and frustration and guilt. Allow these things to radicalize you. What other purpose right now besides liberation?

ChatGPT Essay about Jockstraps
Jockstraps are a type of athletic support garment designed to provide protection and support for male genitalia during sports activities. The jockstrap was invented in the late 19th century, in response to the increasing popularity of sports and the need for better protective gear.
The first jockstraps were made of elastic and were designed to hold a protective cup in place to protect against impact injuries. These early models were primarily used by cyclists, who needed protection from the hard leather saddles of their bikes. As sports such as baseball, football, and hockey became more popular, jockstraps began to be used by athletes in those sports as well.
In the early 20th century, the design of the jockstrap began to evolve. The first major innovation was the addition of a pocket for the protective cup, which made it easier to insert and remove the cup as needed. Another innovation was the addition of straps to the waistband, which helped to keep the jockstrap in place during rigorous activity.
During World War I, jockstraps became a common item of military-issue gear. Soldiers were issued jockstraps as part of their basic kit, as they provided support and protection for troops engaged in physical activities such as marching, running, and combat.
In the 1920s and 1930s, jockstraps began to be marketed to the general public as a form of athletic support. Companies such as Bike, a manufacturer of cycling gear, began to produce jockstraps for a wider audience, and the garment became increasingly popular among athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
In the 1940s and 1950s, jockstraps became a staple of high school and college sports teams. Many schools required athletes to wear jockstraps as part of their uniform, and the garment became a symbol of athletic prowess and masculinity.
In the 1970s and 1980s, jockstraps began to be replaced by compression shorts and other types of athletic support garments. However, jockstraps remain a popular choice for many athletes, particularly in contact sports such as football, hockey, and lacrosse.
In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in jockstraps, particularly among the LGBTQ+ community. Jockstraps are often seen as a symbol of masculinity and sexuality, and many people enjoy wearing them for their aesthetic and functional properties.
In conclusion, jockstraps have a long and rich history that dates back over a century. Originally designed to provide protection and support for male cyclists, the jockstrap has evolved to become a staple of athletic gear for many sports and activities. While the design of the jockstrap has changed over the years, it remains a popular choice for athletes and fitness enthusiasts who require support and protection for their genitalia during rigorous physical activity

Oh! A lot of this is due to generational wealth and school funding. Only upper middle class to upper class schools get funding for sports outside of the usual football, basketball and track, Maybe wrestling if they can afford another coach, and soccer, tennis and/or swimming if there's a local rec center wo can lend their facilities to the school/s around them, but even so, they're not super likely to lend the pool because that's for ~paying customers~. Pretty much any sport outside of that, if you aren't in a school with a high enough budget, you have to have parents who can afford private lessons, equipment, competition fees and uniforms, and the gas and plane tickets to away games when you start getting good enough to go to things like nationals. And then if you get scouted, you have to get sports scholarships or have parents who can afford college and every accociated expense of that. It's a long, expensive road to the pros for most sports.
Because schools are funded by property taxes, which ensures that the best schools go to the wealthiest families. And black families, by and large, do not have generational wealth due to, obviously, slavery, then Jim Crow and Red Lining, then the Prison-Industrial complex, Gerrymandering, gentrification, and outsourcing of manufacturing overseas, to name a few off the top of my head.
Meanwhile, schools in lower income areas cut their arts programs for the sports teams they have fields for, and there is a glut of media, coaches and scouts telling black boys that sports, especially football and basketball are their best bet for success, and funding that path more fully than any other. And then yeah, nail on the head on your part, due to bullshit conscious and unconscious bias that people have that black bodies are more pain resistant and strong than white ones, black boys and men get put on more dangerous positions on sports teams with white men.
I'm sure you already know all this, but like, yeah, it's not all stereotyping and overt discrimination leading to that sports-race disparity. A lot of it is socioeconomic.
i feel weird commenting on "high T cis woman in sports is the subject of transphobic attacks" type incidents because like, its just racism, right? there's barely any transphobia left in the picture

Custom Gear That Is Just As Effective As You!
Tumblr media
Wear apparel with a completely unique logo to protect yourself from the solar rays and to stay warm while the weather gets cold. You can effectively sell your emblem simultaneously as enjoyable customer wishes with lighter hoodies with integrated sun protection, comfortable fleece coats, and stylish children’s button-up shirts.
Tumblr media
The benefits of being outdoors for extended periods of time for your physical and intellectual well-being are counterbalanced by your extra exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Humans might not put on appropriate overlaying because traditional sun safety garb can be bulky, hot, and unpleasant. Custom lightweight UV hoodies provide a breathable alternative that blocks the dangerous rays of sunlight and keeps you cool.
The lightweight substances used to create those unique hoodies provide advanced solar protection. To prevent overheating, loads of them are made with moisture-wicking fibers. With an ultra-tight weave and further UV-resistant coatings to block 97% or more of UVA and UVB rays from penetrating, the fabric’s shape is what virtually works its magic.
UV hoodies are available in pullover and complete-zip sorts, with hoods that may be adjusted to provide customized coverage. Put the hood up on sunny days. To attain a suitable level of security, beat back the clouds as they roll in. Those adaptable layers are a way to mark objects for out-of-door agencies, sports teams, nearby gatherings, and more.
Tumblr media
It’s time to throw on a further warming layer while the temperature drops. Because fleece provides light insulation without adding undue bulk, it is the precise answer. As customers and employees stay warm, you may sell your brand with Promotional Fleece Apparel, Coats, Vests, Blankets, and more.
Most fleece garb is manufactured from a smooth cotton knit, producing an at-ease, fuzzy lining to entice warmness without sacrificing breathability. The moisture-wicking era is blanketed into many objects to switch sweat away from the pores and skin and keep you dry. Summary: Green was the color of the grass where he used to walk in Tchakova Park.
In which John meets a stranger in the park, Violet learns of the care and keeping of Spartans, and Cortana offers dating advice. (Completed 5/7/24)
Chapter Four: The Rock
“How much longer do we have to be up here, Doctor? My ass is starting to hurt.”
Violet sat back in her harness and kicked off of the rock face to turn herself to face the grouping of young botanists hanging beside her. The field team responsible for the damaged sample from the Karpos Mountains were scattered across the rock, each working diligently to excavate and take samples from the cliff face. The fair haired botanist beside her looked over at her from where he dangled from his belay in front of a patch of gray-green lichen with collection scalpel gripped in a gloved hand. He watched her with an anticipatory look, and the dark haired doctor raised a brow at his question before she turned back to the rock.
“That depends, Donaghy,” she said plainly. She grunted as she pulled herself up the rock face so that she hovered over him. “Keep turning in compromised samples and you’ll find yourself sleeping up here. Now, show me again.”
He sighed as he gently gripped the lichen and inspected it for a worthwhile section to sample. He selected a leaf before he gave her a hopeful look. Violet approved his action with a nod of the head. He took the plant gently in one hand, sliced through it with the scalpel with the other, and gingerly placed it inside of a vial. He looked back to Violet, who nodded again.
“Good, tag it and take a root sample next. I want to see it when you are finished,” she instructed before she started her climb towards the next member of the team. Her foot slipped on the stone and sent a spray of crumbled rock down below. Violet groaned as her hands slipped from the rock and left her to swing out over the floor of Greenhouse #2 fifty feet below.
The team’s horrendous fuck up had resulted in a morning of hands on training. Each member of the team had spent the past three and a half hours suspended on one of the several, vast manufactured cliff faces that served as the interior of the greenhouse known to the department as the Rock; webbed and draped in a variety of rock-dwelling plants that spread across the surface. Violet found herself clipped into her own belay beside them as she checked their work to clear them to return to the field with bulky field bag clipped around her waist as she corrected, instructed, and marked off on each of their clearance forms.
She didn’t necessarily mind the work; only the fact that it had to be done in the first place. Her previous colleagues had warned her about her new position and the lack of field work she would be subjected to, and they had been sorely right. The time spent on the wall had been the closest she had come to the work she loved the most in the few months she had been at FLEETCOM. Violet was grateful for the feeling of stone under her fingertips and the ache in her muscles as she climbed and breathed in the earthy scent of disturbed soil. It reminded her of summers in college spent working at the Bíbor Cliffs working as a climbing guide and nights spent in portaledges under the stars.
The belay device above her whirred as she climbed. The ropes clipped to her harness fed into the cylindrical brake system bolted into the top of the wall with each inch she ascended, keeping the ropes taut with each foot she climbed up. She twisted her grip onto one hand, her fingers grasping at a protrusion in the wall as she analyzed the surface for her next movement. Sweat clung to her body and dampened her clothes. Violet felt it trickle down her back and stopped to wipe it from her brow with the sleeve of the thin long sleeve she had changed out of her uniform into. She spotted the next natural handhold that sat just slightly out of grasp. She shifted and released a breath as she focused on the spot, summoning her strength and propelling herself upwards towards it. After a series of short, deliberate movements, she found herself over the next team member, the fine hairs that had escaped from her bun sticking to her neck.
The climb has served as a welcome distraction as well from the smiley face that had clouded her mind since the night before. She had flipped back and forth into their message thread on her pad and read over the brief exchange over and over again, examining it as if it were some ancient, forgotten language she needed to decipher. She hadn’t been prepared to hear from him when the message vibrated her pad on her nightstand and threw blue light into the darkened bedroom. She had picked it up without much thought, expecting to see a reminder pop up regarding the upcoming training at the Rock the following morning. She had audibly gasped when she saw the three messages on her screen, lined up neatly one after the other. Her stomach nearly fell into her ass as she paused the trashy dating reality show she had been mindlessly watching as Sadie snored beside her in bed. She had paced the floor of her bedroom after she responded, whispering curses under her breath at the use of the stupidly uncreative nickname she had used for him in response to ‘goose girl’. She had practically leapt onto the bed when his response came in. Sadie let out a frustrated groan at the disruption to her sleep before she burrowed under the comforter.
She had stared at the collection of punctuation that served as his final message of the night the following morning as she poured her coffee, still trying to make sense of the meaning. What had he meant by it? Had he meant anything by it? She had agonized over it all morning while she typed out different messages only to promptly delete them as she found fault in every line she wrote out. She chastized herself for allowing herself to act so childish. Besides, he was the Master Chief. And she was just… Violet. But the night before, as they stood in the rain, he had laughed at her jokes. He called her funny. He had thrown the ball for her dog and walked her home and had just been… John. Rain soaked and waiting for her beside the pond. And she had just been Violet.
The botanist below her cleared her throat. Violet’s thoughts shifted from soft smiles and hazel eyes back to the cliff side. She used her finger to lift the root system of the plant the young woman had gently pried from the crack in the rock it grew from and checked for external damage to the thin soil covered veins.
“Good. Next time, try not to remove as much of the plant from the rock. It could go into shock and have a difficult time recovering. It could lead to us losing the whole plant.”
The young woman nodded and opened her mouth to respond. A different voice called Violet’s name; a deep rumble that boomed up from the base of the wall and made her skin feel too tight.
“Doctor Harris!”
She twisted with one foot keeping her anchored to the wall as she looked down, finding John at the bottom of the wall in his black undersuit. Her stomach fluttered when he smiled up at her from where he stood. His eyes followed her as she swayed side to side, her toes pressed firmly to the rock. He looked out of place among the various work tables full of seedlings and soil and potted plants that surrounded him. She returned his smile with a little wave, which he returned before he quickly dropped his hand back to his side. She heard the team begin to whisper around her as all eyes fixed upon the Spartan below.
“Holy shit, is that Master Chief?” Someone whispered. Violet looked up at the team to find them all staring down as if they were watching a caged animal and not another human being. She rolled her eyes at the lack of decorum and cleared her throat noisily.
“Alright,” she called out. Ropes creaked as the five climbers turned to face her, “That’s enough for today. Thanks, everyone.”
A collection of relieved groans and grumbles about numb rear ends and legs sounded as they kicked off the wall and belay devices whined under the weight of their rappel down. She remained on the wall, still hovered above him as John smiled up at her from the ground below. The team watched him with wide eyes and whispered to one another as they detached themselves from their ropes and slowly removed their harnesses. Violet had never seen the usually quick actions done with such careful and deliberate motions as they tossed their harnesses into the basket at the base of the wall haphazardly and slipped out of their soft climbing shoes to replace them with their stiff uniform boots. John adopted a neutral expression as they passed, his arms crossed as he nodded in response to the greetings of “Master Chief” given as the team made towards the exit, still peeking over their shoulders with astonished glances.
Donaghy remained at the base of the wall, jerking sharply at the carabiner that attached his harness to the belay device at the top of the wall. Violet watched as the clip slipped out of his hand and shouted out a warning to the young man. The brake drum of the device pulled the rope straight up the wall with a screech as it whizzed up towards her quickly.
She saw John’s neutral demeanor falter before he took a few helpless steps towards the wall, his hand reached towards her as he shouted, “Watch out!”
Violet pushed off the wall to swing away from where the clip cracked against the wall beside her and sent a shower of rock shards tumbling below. John covered his face with his outstretched arm to block himself from the sharp rock that rained down onto him. The clip smacked against the device with a loud crack that turned the heads of the staff working below. She cursed as she swung back towards the wall and braced herself against the impact with her feet, her heart pounding from the close call as she looked down to shoot a look at the young botanist. She found that Donaghy’s eyes were no longer on the wall, but on the Spartan across from him who’s own scowl made Violet’s look like a cheery grin. Donaghy sputtered nervously as he looked between John to where Violet hung before he called up, “Sorry, Doctor Harris!”
She sighed and rubbed her chest where her heart still thundered. She waved the botanist on and called for him to go to lunch, but Donaghy took one final look at John before practically running to the exit. Violet looked up the remaining few meters to the top of the wall where the belay devices sat and began to track her path from her location on the wall to the top.
“Be down in a sec!” she called down. John’s eyes didn’t leave her location as he nodded.
She clambered up the wall to the errant hook with a grunt. Giving it a hard tug down, she strained against the tension as she clipped it to her harness. She released the hand break that allowed her to descend from the top, a gentle whirring filling her ears as she kicked off the wall and rappelled down, down, down in great leaps.
“This is a surprise,” she called as her feet found the wall. She steadied herself before pushing off again and releasing the hand brake, the rope whizzing through as she descended a few meters and applied the hand brake again. She regretted her choice of words instantly as she touched down again on the wall and noticed that he looked away. It was a surprise, she thought, but she didn’t mind his presence within the greenhouse one bit. Violet tucked her feet under herself and let herself dangle about ten feet from the ground. He barely had to lift his chin to peer up at her, that same soft look from the park in his eyes as she added hurriedly, “A good surprise. Sorry about them. We don’t get many visitors out here.”
“I tried your office. They told me I might find you out here,” he explained, then added quickly, “I sent you a message.”
She glanced to where her pad sat on the work bench below where it had sat untouched over the last several hours. “Sorry,” she said sheepishly, “I’ve been up here all morning.”
He nodded before his attention turned to the various cliff faces and plant life around.
“I’ve lived on this base almost my entire life and have passed these buildings a couple hundred times. I had no idea all of this,” he gestured with a finger in a sweeping motion around them, “was in here.”
“We botanists are a secretive bunch,” she shrugged, “Can’t let you Spartans have all the fun now, can we?”
He huffed out a laugh; a low throaty sound that made her skin prickle. “Guess not,” he agreed, still looking around the greenhouse, “The air feels thinner in here.”
“Because it is. The greenhouse was designed to simulate high elevation environments so we can study the plants that grow there in their ideal conditions,” she explained. She kicked herself off the wall and allowed herself to swing absently. John tensed at the motion and took a step towards the wall, a nervous expression splitting his face. With another hard kick, she swung back again, his eyes following her until the, “So technically, we’re about 6500 meters above sea level without leaving the ground. Pretty cool, right?”
Her feet touched down on the opposite side of the wall, John still watching her with an unwavering intensity as she swayed. His shoulders stiffened as she kicked off again and her foot slipped as she touched down. Violet curled her toes to correct herself before she could slam against the wall. She watched as the sharp line of his jaw set, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard. She released the hand brake again and continued her rappel down.
“Am I making you nervous?” she called. Her feet found the wall again a few feet above where he stood.
“I’ve already found at least 15 ways you can injure yourself up there.”
“Me?” she pressed a hand to her chest with a performative gasp. John rolled his eyes, the shadow of a smirk lifting his mouth, “The poster child of climbing safety? Hurt myself? Please, you insult me. I’m basically a pro at this thing. Watch.”
She leaned backward and allowed her weight to flip her over, watching as an upside down John reached for her again. Panic flickered in his eyes as he moved towards the base of the wall to step under her trajectory. She pressed her feet together against the rope and lifted an arm over her head in a showy motion. John shook his head, the panic replaced by amusement as he chuckled at her. Violet grinned at him, suddenly very aware of how close her face was to his as she hung there.
“See? I’ve got it all under control,” she stated proudly.
The rope swung backward to bring her back banging against the wall with a pained grunt. Her raised hand went to the back of her head, rubbing the place where it had collided with the rock with a soft groan. John laughed and grabbed the rope to pull her away from the wall.
“Sure. Get down.”
“Okay,” she let out an exaggerated sigh as she righted herself and rappelled down the last few feet at his request. The tension in his shoulders noticeably dropped as her feet hit solid ground, “But not because you told me to.”
He rolled his eyes as she unclipped the second carabiner that hooked her harness to Donaghy’s rouge rope and held it out to John.
“Can you hold this while I unclip? Be careful,” she commented. John took the clip from her hand as she looked down to undo her own, “It has a bit of a pull.”
She unclipped her own rope, fighting the sharp tug upward that came as soon as it left her harness, and looked up at John. He held his own rope as if it were a balloon string, unbothered by the upward tension as he watched her. Heat crawled up her neck as she realized how silly her warning had been to him and struggled with her rope. She pointed towards the anchor hooks at the base of the wall before she gave the rope a hard tug toward to create a bit of slack as she secured it to the wall. John replicated her motions with an astounding ease and clipped the rope he held onto the anchor before he strained up and wiped the chalky dust that had transferred onto his hands on the leg of his black undersuit.
She busied herself with loosening her harness. A wonder she had never expected to see in the eyes of a Spartan as John’s eyes roaming over the greenhouse again. “Are they all like this?” He asked.
“This one is the only one with climbable walls. You should come out for a tour sometime,” she tossed her harness into the basket with the others and wiped her hands on her pants. Her heart jumped at the notion of him following her along the paths as they went from greenhouse to greenhouse. It seemed like a nice way to spend an afternoon,  “They’re actually pretty neat.”
“I might have to take you up on that,” he said, peering up the wall. “I assume you have a favorite out of all of these? Or does a botanist not have a favorite plant?”
“Oh, we surely do. Well, my favorite that we do have would have to be the giant ferns in Greenhouse #1,” she explained, “But we actually don’t have my favorite plant here.”
“Yeah? What would that be?”
She hoped the giddy smile that split her face at the mention of her favorite plant didn’t come off as off-putting as she took the few steps to the workbench her data pad rested on and snatched it off. She noticed his message sent two hours prior as she unlocked it, ;
117: Hey goose. Was hoping to see you today. Busy later?
She tried her best not to blush at the nickname and flicked the message to the side. She opened her digital catalog database and scrolled with a finger through the entries until she reached the one she searched for.
“I haven’t encountered one in the field, which makes it dumb that it’s my favorite, but I came across it during my studies and it’s just the coolest thing I’ve ever seen,” she caught herself, swallowing hard to slow the increasingly quick cadence in which she had started speaking. She tapped at her pad until the image of a lily with large, silvery petals appeared and held it out to John.
“There’s this flower, the lilium floraphos, that grows in low light environments deep within the rain forests of a few outer colony planets. They only get about two to three hours of direct sunlight at a time; so at some point in its evolution, it began to store energy from those few hours of sunlight within its cells and produce its own light to photosynthesize with. It’ll just open up and produce this silvery light until the plant has collected all of the energy it needs to sustain itself, and then close again until it finds itself in need again. There are records of explorers encountering them believing they came across a fallen star.”
She gestured to the image as she spoke, John watching her fingers glide against the different parts of the plant. At some point in her rambling, he had placed his hand under her own that supported the pad to tilt it towards him so he could view the image better. His hand was warm and calloused under hers, so large that it covered hers entirely. She felt too hot in the air conditioned building.
“That was a painfully long, specific answer to your question,” she said sheepishly. She brushed her bangs out of her eyes absently, embarrassingly aware of the thin layer of sweat that covered her whole body. “I’ve been told that I can get a bit carried away. Sorry.”
Those soft eyes watched her still as she looked up and found that he was no longer looking at her pad. He had just the faintest bit of brown in his green eyes, she noticed.
“Don’t be,” he ran his thumb over the back of her hand. Violet wondered if the lower oxygen levels had finally caught up to her when she found it difficult to breathe. “It was nice.”
Her pad chimed and both looked down at the message that illuminated her screen. Violet sighed as she read over Lorelei’s message requesting her presence back in the lab. John dropped his hand and Violet felt a tinge of disappointment in the absence of its warmth, her skin tingling where his thumb had brushed over it. She tapped back a quick response to Lorelei before she tucked her pad under an arm and looked up at John.
“I have to head back,” she said apologetically. John watched as she gathered her things, still planted to the spot beside her, his presence beside her warm and firm.
“Can I walk you to the lifts?” He asked. He fell into step with her as she moved towards the exit. Violet nodded wordlessly as they traveled the spice bush and wild hydrangea lined path to the exit. She peered out at the gray skies, rain bouncing off the pavement outside of the greenhouses in a thick sheet. She grabbed the large black umbrella she had found in her office from beside the door and undid the strap as John stepped beside her into the cold.
“Wanna share? I feel badly enough about how wet you got last night, I’d hate for you to catch a cold.”
“I can’t catch colds,” he stated.
An acknowledging sound hummed from her throat at his comment and she nodded, wishing that she could sink straight into the ground. Of course they couldn’t, she thought. She raised the umbrella and opened it overhead as they stepped out of the greenhouse. She grimaced when the umbrella poked him in the back of the head with a surprised blink and quickly muttered out an apology. His response was a brush of his fingers against hers as he took the umbrella. Her body tingled under his fingertips as if his touch were a live wire. The large umbrella looked like a child’s toy in his hands as he positioned it over the two of them, “Here. I’ve got it.”
“Are you calling me short, big guy?” She joked.
“Your words, not mine.”
“I hate to have to break it to you, but I fear your height is not the target demographic of my umbrella. So if anyone’s height is a problem, I don’t think it’s mine.” She teased. John shook his head as he grinned. It was a bit crooked, she noticed. Cute. She liked it when he smiled.
“Is that your official observation, Doctor?” He asked with a chuckle.
“Consider it observed and cataloged. I’ll be waiting for the Spartan Research Department to reach out for my findings.”
He chuckled again, Violet feeling the vibration of his body in the excruciating proximity. Her shoulder clumsily bumped his bicep as they stepped out into the rain and she attempted to keep his much wider stride. The Spartan adjusted his step to keep beside her in what she was sure was a painfully slow crawl for him. Trying to keep an appropriate distance under the average-human-sized umbrella, she stepped to the side, feeling the heat that radiated from his large body like a furnace. Rain drizzled down the side of her umbrella onto her shoulder that poked out into the elements. He glanced over and took notice of the thick water stains that dappled her shoulder.
“You’re getting wet,” he said, his voice a low murmur.
She waved a dismissive hand, “Just a bit. It’s fine.”
He didn’t respond. Instead his hand pressed against the curve of her waist, large and strong against her skin as he directed her towards him under the umbrella and out of the rain. Her shoulder pressed against the hard muscle of his bicep and Violet felt heat climb up her neck. His hand lingered on the small of her back for a moment, unsure and gentle, before it dropped to his side.
“Better?”
“Better,” she forced out breathlessly.
They walked the remaining distance to the lifts in silence. Usually the lack of conversation would itch at her skin until someone spoke, but it felt different as they walked together; like there wasn’t a need for words. John kept stride with her in what she was sure was a maddeningly slow pace for the man. At one point, they both opened their mouths to speak, their words tumbling over one another’s before they both let out an apprehensive chuckle and returned to the silence as they continued towards the lifts. John lowered the umbrella as they approached before handing it to her as they stood in front of the door.
“Are you...?” She pointed upwards in question as she pressed the call button.
He shook his head and jerked a thumb behind him, “I’m this way, actually.”
The two shared a silent smile as the lift doors opened and she nodded. She swallowed hard, her mouth feeling abnormally dry as she spoke.
“If you’re not busy tonight,” she began, the words flooding from her, “there’s a quartet playing at the amphitheater in the park I wanted to check out. I’ve heard them play from my apartment and would love to see them perform in person. Would you want to come with me?”
“I would.” His response came without hesitation.
Violet chewed her lip and bit back the grin that threatened to split her face as they lingered in front of the lift.
“Okay,” she managed. The lift doors sliding open to a group of officers all focused upon their datapad screens, “Then it’s a date.”
He gave her a nod, his own lips lifting into a small smile, “Okay.”
---
Violet tugged nervously at the hem of her jacket as she walked the path to the amphitheater. The persistent rain that had settled over New Alexandria continued to drizzle on, dampening the curls she had quickly tamed her hair into upon returning home that evening. She regretted not wearing something with a hood, but the frantic pile she had left upon her bed had left her feeling as if she hated just about every article of clothing she owned. Her umbrella did little against the misty rain that hung over the park.
Sadie had nearly had a fit when Violet breezed through the apartment in a whirlwind of primping and changing and the pup waited patiently by the door for her evening walk. It had taken a fair amount of treats and belly scratches to satiate the irate dog, especially at the mention of John’s name. Violet had been able to push past her as she slipped out of the apartment with a final adjustment of her hair in the mirror and a nervous sigh. Her stomach twisted anxiously as she walked along her street and crossed Cornelia Street into the park.
She had visited the small amphitheater on the far side of the park only a handful of times. It usually housed local musicians, all of which she could hear from her apartment if she left the balcony door open, their music carried in on the breeze like her own private concert. She checked the few posted directories as she walked, triple checking that she wasn’t headed in the wrong direction and leaving him waiting.
John came into view as she turned the corner and fiddled nervously with her hair at the sight of him.He straightened up when he saw her, that soft smile lifting his mouth from under his hood. She returned his smile, but it faltered as she looked beyond him and confusion washed over her as she saw the empty amphitheater.
“Where is everyone?” She asked, worried that she had mistaken the date or time of the performance.
John gestured to the notice posted on the sidewalk that announced the cancellation of all park activities under the reason of inclement weather. She let out a groan.
“Guess not everyone is willing to stand out in the rain,” she sighed. She swapped the shoulder her umbrella rested on as she stepped in front of John.
“Guess not,” he repeated.
Disappointment bubbled in her chest as she glanced back at the amphitheater. The stone benches glistened with the rainwater that pooled in the stands. An uncertainty came over her as she looked back at John, his eyes still fixed upon her from under his hood as he watched her patiently. She swallowed hard as her mind reeled, unwilling to leave the night there.
She pointed in the direction of her apartment and shrugged slightly. “We’re not too far from my place. I have a bottle of wine I’ve been meaning to open. We could just,” John watched her with that quiet, soft intensity that made her thoughts feel hazy as she searched for her next words. Her hand fell to her side to grip her jacket nervously as she finished, “talk. Besides, I’m sure Sadie would love to see her new favorite person.”
He tilted his head in the way he had several times when they spoke, as if straining to hear a far away sound. She matched the action and offered him a soft smile.
“What is that?” She asked.
“What?”
She copied the motion again, a flicker of recognition in his eyes as if she caught him unprepared. His head straightened before his eyes returned to hers. “I’m just,” he paused, “thinking things through.”
She smirked, “And how do things look?”
“Perfect.”
She smiled before she gestured towards the path with a tilt of the head. “Let’s get out of the rain,” she said simply, the two stepping towards the path. John took the umbrella from her hand again to raise it above the both of them as they walked. He placed his hand against her waist, but unlike their walk from the greenhouse, she hadn’t felt the rain upon her shoulder before he gently guided her to his side.

Its sleek exterior is made of durable SS 304 stainless steel, and it features a precision-coating pan positioned at a tangential angle of 35° to 45°, ensuring efficient and uniform coating for pharmaceutical research and development.
pharmaceutical research and development – the R&D tablet coating machine.
The R&D Coater is a versatile and semi-automatic unit designed for pharmaceutical research and development. This integrated system comprises a stainless steel coating pan, a precision spraying system, a hot air blower, and an efficient exhaust system. It harnesses the rotary motion of the coating pan to gently tumble the tablets or granules contained within it. Inside the pan, strategically placed baffles tilt the contents to ensure uniform and efficient coating.
For film coating, a specialized spray gun is employed to disperse finely nebulized droplets of the coating solution onto the moving bed, ensuring consistent coverage across all tablets. To complete the process, a stream of hot air is directed onto the tablet bed, with the exhaust temperature ranging between 60°C and 80°C, enhancing overall performance.
The advanced control panel offers precise control over various settings, including temperature and rotation speeds, allowing for tailored adjustments to meet specific research needs. When introducing tablets or granules into the pan or retrieving them, a scoop should be used. The optimal parameters for coating should be determined through experimentation and trials, ensuring the highest quality results in pharmaceutical research and development.
Fluidized Bed Processor
The Fluidized Bed Processor is a versatile solution tailored for the research and development needs of various industries, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food production, and academic institutions like pharmacy colleges. Its primary functions involve coating and drying pellets, allowing for a wide range of applications, such as:
Color Modification: Altering the color of pellets for specific requirements.
Improved Taste: Enhancing the taste of pharmaceutical or food products.
Modified Release: Achieving controlled and modified release forms.
Moisture and Oxygen Protection: Safeguarding products from environmental factors.
Granulation Machine
A rapid mixer granulator is a pharmaceutical equipment designed for the efficient mixing and granulation of powders to produce uniform and high-quality granules. It plays a crucial role in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in tablet manufacturing. The key components of a rapid mixer granulator include a cylindrical mixing bowl, an impeller, and chopper blades. The mixing bowl accommodates the dry powders or granules, and the impeller provides rotational movement, creating a vortex within the bowl. Simultaneously, the chopper blades introduce additional shearing forces, breaking down agglomerates and ensuring thorough mixing.
The working principle of a rapid mixer granulator involves a series of sequential steps to achieve optimal granulation. Initially, dry powders or granules are loaded into the mixing bowl. As the impeller and chopper blades rotate, they create a controlled and dynamic mixing environment. A liquid binder is then added to the rotating powder bed, leading to the formation of wet mass. The impeller and chopper blades work together to break down any lumps, disperse the liquid binder uniformly, and induce granulation. The resulting granules exhibit improved flow properties, uniform size distribution, and enhanced compressibility, making them ideal for subsequent tablet compression processes in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Fluid Bed Top Coater
A fluid bed top coater is a pharmaceutical processing equipment designed for coating granules or particles with a thin layer of coating material. This coating process is commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry to enhance the properties of the granules, such as taste masking, controlled release, or protection of active ingredients. The equipment consists of a perforated bed through which air is blown, creating a fluidized bed of granules. The coating material is sprayed onto the fluidized granules, ensuring even distribution and uniform coating.
The working principle of a fluid bed top coater involves several steps. Initially, the granules to be coated are placed in the fluidized bed. Air is then introduced at a controlled rate, creating a fluidized state where the granules become suspended and behave like a fluid. This fluidized bed provides an ideal environment for uniform coating. The coating material, often in the form of a liquid solution or suspension, is sprayed onto the fluidized granules through a nozzle system. The fluidized state ensures that each granule receives an even and consistent coating. After coating, the granules are dried by continued airflow until the desired coating thickness is achieved. The fluid bed top coater's efficient and precise coating process is crucial for achieving the desired pharmaceutical product characteristics.
lab-scale fluid bed dryer
A lab-scale fluid bed dryer is a small-scale version of the industrial fluid bed dryer and is widely used in laboratory settings for drying, granulating, and coating small quantities of pharmaceutical or chemical materials. It operates on the principle of fluidization, where air is used to fluidize and suspend particles, creating an efficient drying or coating environment. The equipment typically consists of a drying chamber, a perforated bed, a fan system, and controls for temperature and airflow.
In its working process, the lab-scale fluid bed dryer first places the material to be dried or processed on the perforated bed within the drying chamber. Air is then forced through the bed from below, causing the particles to become suspended and behave like a fluidized mass. This fluidized state allows for efficient heat transfer, leading to rapid and uniform drying of the material. The temperature and airflow are controlled to achieve the desired drying conditions.
For coating applications, a liquid coating material can be sprayed onto the fluidized particles, ensuring a uniform and controlled coating thickness. The lab-scale fluid bed dryer is advantageous for research and development purposes, allowing scientists and researchers to experiment with different drying or coating parameters on a smaller scale before scaling up to industrial production.

Maze Master Software Interface and Digital Plethysmometer
Behavioral instruments such as the Maze Master Software interface and Digital Plethysmometer play crucial roles in experimental setups focused on assessing and quantifying animal behavior in research settings. The Maze Master Software interface is a tool designed for managing and analyzing data from behavioral experiments conducted in mazes. It provides a user-friendly platform to control maze environments, record animal movements, and analyze behavioral metrics. Researchers can customize experiments, track parameters, and obtain valuable insights into aspects like learning, memory, and spatial navigation.
The Digital Plethysmometer is an instrument used to measure changes in blood flow and volume in small animal extremities, often tails, for assessing peripheral perfusion. This device aids in studying vasomotor responses and is particularly valuable in cardiovascular and pharmacological research. The plethysmometer records changes in limb circumference or blood volume based on alterations in infrared light transmission. Researchers can use this data to understand vascular reactivity and evaluate the effects of various interventions on peripheral blood flow.
Both instruments contribute significantly to the field of behavioral and physiological research by providing accurate, reproducible, and quantifiable data essential for understanding various aspects of animal behavior and physiology.
Radial Arm Maze:
The Radial Arm Maze is a widely used behavioral test in neuroscience and pharmacology to assess spatial learning and memory in rodents. It typically consists of a central platform with multiple arms extending radially. Each arm is baited with a reward, and the subject, usually a rat or mouse, learns to navigate and remember which arms contain the rewards. The working principle involves the rodent relying on spatial cues to efficiently locate and retrieve the rewards while avoiding previously visited arms. Researchers analyze the choices made and the time taken, providing insights into cognitive functions, memory, and spatial navigation abilities.
Morris Water Maze:
The Morris Water Maze is a classic spatial memory and learning test for rodents, particularly mice and rats. It comprises a large pool of opaque water, with a hidden platform submerged just below the water's surface. Animals learn to locate the hidden platform using spatial cues around the room. The working mechanism involves the subjects forming a cognitive map of the environment and adjusting their strategies over trials. Researchers measure parameters like escape latency and path length, offering valuable data on spatial learning, memory consolidation, and cognitive flexibility. The Morris Water Maze is a versatile tool in neuroscience for studying various neurological conditions and the effects of pharmacological interventions.
Open Field Maze:
The Open Field Maze is a commonly used apparatus in behavioral research to assess general locomotor activity, exploration, and anxiety levels in rodents. It consists of a large, open arena with defined zones. The working principle involves placing the animal in the center and allowing it to explore the environment freely. Researchers observe and record behaviors such as distance traveled, time spent in the center versus the periphery, and grooming activities. The Open Field Maze provides insights into anxiety-related behaviors, locomotor activity, and the effects of pharmacological interventions on exploratory behavior in preclinical studies.
Elevated Plus Maze:
The Elevated Plus Maze is a well-established test for evaluating anxiety-like behavior in rodents. The maze features two enclosed arms and two open arms elevated above the ground, creating an approach-avoidance conflict. Animals, typically rodents, are placed on the central platform and can choose between the open and enclosed arms. The working mechanism involves the innate tendency of rodents to explore novel environments while balancing the fear of open spaces. Researchers measure parameters such as time spent in open and closed arms, entries into each arm type, and overall exploration behavior. The Elevated Plus Maze is valuable for studying anxiety-related disorders and assessing the anxiolytic or anxiogenic effects of pharmaceutical compounds.
T-Maze:
The T-Maze is a classic apparatus used in behavioral neuroscience to investigate spatial learning and memory in rodents. Its structure resembles the letter "T," with a stem and two arms forming the crossbar. During a trial, an animal, often a rat or mouse, is placed at the base of the stem and given the choice to turn left or right. One arm is typically baited with a reward, while the other remains unrewarded. The working principle involves the rodent using spatial cues to remember and choose the correct arm containing the reward. Researchers analyze the animal's choices, latency to make a decision, and memory retention, providing valuable insights into spatial cognition and memory processes.
Y-Maze:
The Y-Maze is another widely used apparatus for assessing spatial working memory and spontaneous alternation behavior in rodents. It consists of three arms forming the shape of the letter "Y," and animals are allowed to explore the maze freely. The working mechanism involves the innate tendency of rodents to alternate between the arms during successive entries. Researchers record the sequence of arm entries and analyze the percentage of spontaneous alternations as an indicator of spatial working memory. The Y-Maze is particularly useful in preclinical studies to investigate the effects of drugs or genetic manipulations on short-term memory and spatial cognition.
Zero Maze:
The Zero Maze is a specialized apparatus used in behavioral research to assess anxiety-like behavior in rodents. It consists of a circular platform elevated above the ground with two enclosed areas and two open areas. The circular design aims to create a conflict between the natural exploratory behavior of rodents and their aversion to open spaces. The enclosed areas offer a sense of security, while the open areas induce anxiety. The working principle involves placing the animal in the center of the maze and monitoring its preference for exploring the enclosed or open sections. Researchers analyze parameters such as time spent in open and closed areas, entries into each zone, and the overall anxiety-related behavior. The Zero Maze is valuable for studying anxiolytic or anxiogenic effects of drugs and understanding the neural mechanisms underlying anxiety.
Light/Dark Box:
The Light/Dark Box is a widely used apparatus in behavioral neuroscience to assess anxiety-like behavior in rodents, primarily mice and rats. It consists of two compartments: one brightly illuminated (light compartment) and the other dark and enclosed (dark compartment), connected by an opening. The working mechanism leverages the rodents' natural aversion to brightly lit and open spaces. Animals are placed in the dark compartment and given the choice to explore the light area. Researchers monitor behaviors such as time spent in each compartment, entries, and latency to enter the light area. The Light/Dark Box provides insights into an animal's response to conflicting motivations of exploration and aversion, making it a valuable tool for studying anxiety-related behaviors and evaluating the effects of pharmacological interventions.
Aesthesiometer
An aesthesiometer is a medical instrument designed to measure an individual's sensitivity to tactile stimuli, providing quantitative assessments of their sensory perception. It is commonly used in neurological examinations to evaluate the integrity of sensory pathways and detect abnormalities in touch sensitivity. The instrument typically consists of a calibrated rod or filament with a controlled diameter, which is applied to the skin at varying pressure levels. The examiner adjusts the force applied by the aesthesiometer until the individual being tested perceives the sensation. This threshold of perception is then recorded, allowing clinicians to assess and monitor changes in sensory function, particularly in patients with neurological disorders or peripheral neuropathies.
The working principle of the aesthesiometer involves systematically applying the calibrated filament to specific areas of the skin, such as the fingertips or toes, while gradually increasing the force. The individual undergoing the test provides feedback when they first sense the touch, and the corresponding force or pressure required to elicit the sensation is measured. The aesthesiometer allows for precise and reproducible assessments of tactile sensitivity, aiding in the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions affecting the sensory pathways. Clinicians use this information to evaluate the severity of sensory deficits, track changes over time, and tailor appropriate interventions for patients with sensory impairments.

"It is most difficult to transmit in writing an adequate description of this vast movement which both enhances and exceeds the scope of agrarian socialization per se. Here in Mas de las Matas, as in any other collectivized village, there are not only the familiar outward signs of community enterprise, which we have seen in Graus (like the red and black signs designating factories, communal markets, and hotels) but something far more substantial: the installations which constitute the lifeblood of collective life. The district warehouses (for chemical products, cement, raw materials for all the industries) are here, where other village collectives deposit needed surplus commodities, and in exchange pick up necessary goods according to arrangements worked out by the assemblies of fraternal delegates. In the spacious premises of a wealthy fascist who fled are kept stocks of clothing to be distributed to the people of the district. Here also is the place where the individual peasant owners can pick up goods they need and where the amount of goods supplied to each family is recorded.
In the newly built distillery cooperative, organized by the district villages, tartaric acids and ninety-proof medicinal alcohol are extracted from the residue of raisins. In the tailoring shop, men and women cut and sew clothes to order for the collectivists in a good variety of cloth and colors. A family of four (mother, father, and two children) is entitled to 280 pesetas worth of clothing, which is two or three times more than an average peasant family spent for clothes under the old order.
Women shop for provisions in well-appointed sanitary markets done in white tile and marble. Tasty bread of the highest quality is now baked in the collective bakeries at less cost. Dress shops not only make fashionable clothes for women and girls, but as in many other villages young girls are taught how to sew clothes for their future children.
A sign reads “Public Library.” It is surprisingly well stocked with a good selection of books on academic subjects — sociology, literature ... and a good variety of school textbooks... The library is free to all including the “individualists” (nonmembers of the collectives). There are also educational activities for young and old.
In the spirit and practice of solidarity for all through respect for the individuality of each, every family is allotted a small parcel of land to use as it wishes, supplementing their diet by growing certain fruits and vegetables, raising rabbits, etc. Rationing is not therefore synonymous with uniformity.
If clothes, for example, are also rationed, it is not because the collectives in this part of Aragon lack the necessary purchasing power. There are many products, principally wheat, which could be exchanged for clothing manufactured in Catalonia. However, enormous quantities of wheat, meat, vegetables, and olive oil, which could be exchanged for other goods, but are sorely needed to sustain the armed forces in the anti-fascist war, are donated free of charge to the soldiers. Likewise, great quantities of goods are donated to Madrid, besieged by the Franco armies.
Medical care and medicines are free. Free eyeglasses are provided for both collectivists and “individualists.” Public instruction is obligatory for children up to the age of fourteen. A new rural school some distance from the village has just been built and opened for all older children who have never before attended school. And in Mas de las Matas, two young teachers graduated from colleges in Saragossa, Valencia and Teruel have been placed in charge of two new classrooms providing for the education of 50 children in each room.[96]
According to the norms established throughout Aragon, Castile, and the Levant, no collective is allowed to go into business for itself for its own profit. This avoids the tendency towards speculation, which is made easy by the war situation and is fairly common (a type of competition which so often characterizes certain collective factories, especially the textile mills in Barcelona). These measures of a moral character are on a par with the sense of organizational responsibility prevailing in the socialized villages. Each collectivized village provides a list of its surplus products and the products in short supply to the Cantonal (district) Committee. The Committee headquarters in Mas de las Matas keeps track of the surplus commodities and needs of each collective village. It knows exactly what reserves of wine, meat, olive oil, wheat (flour), potatoes, sugar, and other supplies each village has on hand. If, for example, a collective furnishing oil does not need wine, it can order other articles, or reserve them until they become available, or hold surplus commodities for exchange with other collectives in the district, The Cantonal Committee is actually a kind of clearing house for exchange or barter. In addition, through the general market and the communal warehouse, the facilities for exchange within and outside the village are always at hand.
This system of exchange is practiced without the slightest reservation because the spirit of profiteering no longer motivates the collectivists. A village which, because of unusually difficult circumstances, has nothing to exchange will not therefore be condemned to poverty, or be compelled to mortgage itself and its economy for years and years. For example: this year the principal crops of Mas de las Matas, Seno, and La Ginebrosa were destroyed by hailstorms. In a capitalist regime, such natural disasters would have meant endless privations, heavy debts, foreclosures, and even emigration of some workers for several years. But in the regime of libertarian solidarity, these difficulties were overcome by the efforts of the whole district. Provisions, seeds, etc., everything needed to repair the damage, were furnished in the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity — without conditions, without contracting debts. The Revolution has created a new civilization!"
