In Tommy's waking life he has to deal with his shattered family, his trauma, and the dangers of the dsmp, while in his dreams he goes to another, softer, gentler world where he has to navigate being cared for by a strange, caring, other worldly version of his abuser, Dream.

I love the style of this so far, the author really nails Tommy's sass and irritability, along with his softer moments without making him too soft. If you like my Tommy you'll probably like theirs too.

Honestly an amazing fic, some of the best writing I have ever seen, I feel transported to the sea every time I read it. I know the lack of an ending is sad, but I promise, it's still worth the experience of reading.

Dans “Le Ghetto intérieur”, Amigorena raconte son grand-père au temps de la Shoah

On le suit depuis vingt et un ans. Depuis le premier volume – Une enfance laconique (1998) – de ce qui allait devenir l’une des œuvres autobiographiques les plus belles, amples, ambitieuses de la littérature contemporaine. Tentative mélancolique et poétique d’épuiser la vie en la racontant dans une série de livres qui, mine de rien, auront fini par former un roman monstre, une hydre mémorielle gigantesque.

Tous les matins pendant plus de vingt ans, Santiago H. Amigorena s’est réveillé à l’aube pour écrire ce projet personnel, avant de consacrer le reste de sa journée à l’écriture de scénarios pour toute une génération de réalisateurs (dont Cédric Klapisch) ou pour lui – il a réalisé trois films. Tous les deux ou trois ans, donc, on se faisait une joie de recevoir des nouvelles d’Amigorena – Une jeunesse aphone (2000), Une adolescence taciturne (2002)… Le garçon parlait pathologiquement peu mais noircissait des pages et des pages de son écriture en pattes de mouche.

Cette rentrée, il fait un pas de côté pour raconter non pas sa vie mais celle de son grand-père, une histoire terrible qui hante, longtemps après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la mémoire familiale. La Shoah vécue du côté de ceux qui furent saufs, de Juifs qui décidèrent de quitter l’Europe avant l’extermination, mais suivirent, de loin, le calvaire vécu par ceux qui restèrent.

Vicente Rosenberg, le grand-père d’Amigorena, fut de ceux-là : installé en Argentine dès 1928, marié et père de deux jeunes enfants au moment où la Seconde Guerre mondiale éclate, il tente encore de convaincre sa mère, restée à Varsovie, de le rejoindre à Buenos Aires.

Peu à peu, les nouvelles s'amenuisent, les lettres mettent plus de temps à arriver, voire n’arrivent plus. Peu à peu, Vicente comprend que, alors qu’il est en sécurité, sa mère se retrouve murée vivante dans le ghetto de Varsovie, qu’elle y vit des choses terribles. Enfin, qu’elle n’en réchappera sans doute pas. 

Le Ghetto intérieur montre toutes les étapes de l’enfermement d’un homme dans son propre ghetto, fait de culpabilité et de silence, avec une justesse de ton qui le rend plus que bouleversant, sidérant. En constante opposition à ce drame intime, Amigorena rappelle, en parallèle, les décisions prises par l’administration nazie qui mèneront à la tragédie personnelle, collective, face à laquelle un être est impuissant à sauver ceux qu’il aime. Comment vit-on pendant ? Comment survivre après ? Le Ghetto intérieur est, de tous les textes de la rentrée, celui qui mériterait le plus une belle récompense littéraire.

Pourquoi as-tu décidé d’écrire sur ton grand-père maintenant et pas avant ?

Il y a déjà deux livres qui existent sur Vicente : ma tante Victoire en a écrit un (Time Secret de Viqui Rosenberg – ndlr), et, l’année dernière, mon cousin Martin en a signé un autre sur ses deux grands-pères, dont l’un est donc Vicente (Los Abuelos de Martín Caparrós – ndlr). Sur les 300 pages de ce texte, il y en a une vingtaine où il raconte la période de la guerre, quand Vicente reçoit des lettres de sa mère. Je lui ai tout de suite dit qu’un jour j’écrirais sur lui. Bien sûr, j’ai toujours été au courant du silence de mon grand-père.

La puissance des sociétés d’Internet préoccupe les républicains et les démocrates américains. Des enquêtes ont été ouvertes notamment par le très redouté département de la Justice.

En présentant un plan pour scinder les quatre plus grandes entreprises technologiques américaines, début mars, la démocrate Elizabeth Warren n’a pas simplement fait émerger, de façon opportuniste, un thème de campagne pour l’investiture à la présidentielle. Depuis le scandale Cambridge Analytica, le débat sur les moyens à mettre en œuvre pour contenir la puissance des Facebook, Google, Amazon et, dans une moindre mesure, Apple, divise à l’intérieur des deux camps politiques américains. Pour des raisons profondément différentes, des partisans démocrates et républicains se rejoignent pour agiter cette solution extrême, censée permettre de reprendre le contrôle d’une situation de domination inédite aux conséquences incertaines. En juillet, des représentants des quatre géants ont été auditionnés au Congrès, dans le cadre d’une enquête sur l’évaluation de ces conséquences.

L’administration Trump, elle aussi divisée sur le sujet, est passée à l’action sous l’impulsion d’un président qui juge lui-même ces géants «très très monopolistiques». Outre les investigations de l’agence chargée de la protection des consommateurs (FTC), le puissant département de la Justice a lancé fin juillet une enquête sur d’éventuels abus de position dominante d’entreprises numériques, se gardant toutefois de les citer nommément.

L’objectif? D’une part, déterminer si les monopoles construits sur certaines activités freinent l’innovation, en écartant, par différentes tactiques stratégiques, des concurrents ou en tuant dans l’œuf de futurs concurrents. De l’autre, voir si les consommateurs peuvent in fine en pâtir, en termes de prix, sans parler du traitement de leurs données personnelles. Deux points très compliqués à déterminer.

Une guerre sans merci

Aux États-Unis, une bonne partie de la théorie de la concurrence se fonde en effet sur l’idée qu’un monopole ou une position dominante augmente le prix payé par le consommateur. Or, l’utilisateur de Facebook ou de Google ne paie rien. En Europe, l’affaire n’est pas plus simple. L’anticoncurrence se concentre sur une approche où la position dominante se mesure en fonction des parts de marché acquises par une entreprise dans un périmètre donné. Quand ces parts de marché sont trop élevées, la Commission en vient à y voir le signe d’un abus, mais toute la difficulté reste de le prouver. Les enquêtes sont souvent longues et fastidieuses. Il a ainsi fallu cinq années d’investigations sur Google, qui installait d’office ses services de recherche sur le système d’exploitation mobile Android, avant d’en arriver à une décision pour laquelle le géant du numérique a fait appel.

En outre, l’accusation de concentration d’un marché autour des GAFA est contredite, du point de vue de la concurrence, par le fait que les Gafa eux-mêmes se livrent une guerre sans merci. Sur le marché de la publicité digitale, le duopole Facebook-Google profite de l’arrivée d’Amazon pour se dérober aux accusations d’abus de position dominante, puisque ce nouvel entrant a réussi à leur rafler des parts de marché. «Plusieurs de nos concurrents sont assis autour de la table avec moi», a ainsi répondu Matt Perault, le directeur des politiques publiques de Facebook face aux députés américains. Il a également cité l’acteur chinois TikTok. La Chine est un mot qui revient souvent dans la défense des GAFA. Un démantèlement des entreprises américaines les plus innovantes laisserait un boulevard aux géants technologiques chinois, qui rêvent de pouvoir étendre leurs frontières numériques, arguent-ils.

C’est pourtant bien sur la question de l’innovation et des données personnelles que la toute-puissance des géants est la plus attaquable. En établissant les conditions d’accès à un marché, où ils opèrent également en tant que vendeurs, Apple et Amazon enfreignent le principe de «fairness» défendu par la Commission européenne mais aussi par les règles commerciales en vigueur aux États-Unis. Le fait que Facebook ait racheté tous ses concurrents et domine aujourd’hui le marché du réseau social en Europe et aux États-Unis suscite aussi des inquiétudes légitimes.

Couper la tête d’une hydre

Face à ceux qui veulent «laisser faire» et ceux qui souhaitent «tout démanteler», une autre voie émerge. Certains économistes et penseurs choisissent de s’attaquer au problème de la toute-puissance des Gafa en s’intéressant au carburant de leur croissance: la donnée. Celle-ci est en effet au cœur d’un modèle économique inédit, qui défie la loi universelle des rendements décroissants. Théorisée par Ricardo, cette règle veut que l’ajout d’une unité de travail ou de capital dans un processus de production ait, au-delà d’un certain niveau, un rendement inférieur au précédent ajout de la même unité de travail ou de capital.

La conséquence directe de ces rendements croissants se traduit par une concentration d’acteurs à la croissance exponentielle

Dans l’économie des GAFA, ce palier n’existe pas: obtenir les données du premier million d’utilisateurs coûte très cher et rapporte peu, mais obtenir le million suivant coûte moins cher et rapporte plus. La conséquence directe de ces rendements croissants se traduit par une concentration d’acteurs à la croissance exponentielle. Face à cela, le démantèlement apparaît à certains comme une solution aussi efficace que de couper la tête d’une hydre. En revanche, s’attaquer au nœud du problème, à ce qui crée la valeur des GAFA et la retire à d’autres acteurs, ouvre de nouvelles perspectives économiques. Parmi les pistes envisagées, celle d’une copropriété de la donnée entre entreprises, individus et collectivités commence à faire son chemin. Les réflexions de la Prix Nobel d’économie en 2009, Elinor Oström, permettent en effet d’envisager d’autres modes de gouvernance dans la gestion de ressources. Et de renouer avec les utopies initiales d’Internet, où la valeur économique s’ancrait dans le partage des idées et le flux des données, et non leur appropriation par quatre géants américains.

Celle que l’on surnomme «la bête noire des Gafa» est responsable de quatre des plus grosses amendes de l’anticoncurrence contre l’expansion des géants du numérique. Pour autant, elle n’envisage le démantèlement qu’en dernier recours. Elle considère que l’Europe dispose de nombreux outils et à des degrés d’intensité variables afin de s’assurer que les prix restent bas et que la compétition soit préservée. La commissaire envisage plutôt la piste de réguler la donnée. «Celui qui les détient possède également les ressources pour l’innovation», affirmait-elle au festival SXSW en mars dernier.

Le colocataire de chambre de Mark Zuckerberg à Harvard, Chris Hughes a publié en mai dernier une tribune accablante pour appeler au démantèlement de Facebook. «Il a fallu les retombées des élections de 2016 et Cambridge Analytica pour m’éveiller aux dangers du monopole de Facebook», explique Chris Hughes, qui est aussi un militant du Parti démocrate. Celui-ci estime que les parts de marché de Facebook dans la publicité digitale empêchent l’entrée de nouveaux concurrents. Chris Hughes s’est associé à Scott Hemphill et Tim Wu, deux experts en technologie et en droit de la concurrence, avec qui il prévoit de rencontrer les gouvernements et régulateurs de plusieurs pays à travers le monde afin de leur expliquer comment démanteler le géant.

Parmi les cinq commissaires de l’autorité la plus puissante des États-Unis, ce démocrate est sans doute le plus vindicatif à l’égard des Gafa. Il a voté contre l’amende prononcée contre Facebook, qu’il jugeait insuffisante. «La FTC disposait d’assez de preuves pour poursuivre Facebook et Zuckerberg en justice», a expliqué celui qui estime que le démantèlement lui-même n’est pas suffisant. Conseillé par Lina Khan, jeune chercheuse et auteure d’un article très lu contre le monopole d’Amazon, Rohit Chopra veut reprendre la main sur l’ensemble des géants qu’il compare aux financiers de la Grande Récession.

Dans son article «Antitrust without romance», le chercheur démonte la tendance actuelle de certains régulateurs européens et américains à user d’une rhétorique populiste et moralisatrice autour du démantèlement, au détriment des règles élémentaires de droit de la concurrence et des études actuelles de macroéconomie. Aucune étude concordante ne prouve d’après lui que le pouvoir des géants des technologies serait fondamentalement différent de celui des géants de l’industrie, et leur démantèlement pourrait avoir des effets délétères sur l’économie et in fine, le consommateur.

L’économiste américain juge l’approche européenne face aux Gafa «interven-tionniste» et représentative d’une application des lois de la concurrence orientée par la pression politique, à la seule fin de satisfaire les compétiteurs des entreprises visées. «Tout appel (au démantèlement) doit répondre à la crainte que ce démantèlement de certaines de nos sociétés les plus performantes réduise l’efficacité économique», estime-t-il dans un article de recherche. Beaucoup critiquent en revanche l’approche de l’économiste en raison de ses liens passés avec Google.
